Adherent and low friction nanocrystalline diamond films via adsorbing organic molecules in self-assembly seeding process

Tao Wang,Lei Huang,Stephan Handschuh-Wang,Songquan Zhang,Xingxing Li,Bo Chen,Yang Yang,Xuechang Zhou,Yongbing Tang

Deposition of adherent and low friction nanocrystalline diamond films on cemented carbide cutting tools has been realized by application of a self-assembly seeding process with the help of lysine as stabilizing and directing agent. The colloidal stability of as-received detonated nanodiamond (DND) particles was enhanced by simply adding lysine into the nanodiamond seeding solution and adjusting the pH. Due to the two amine moieties it enhances the adsorption of oxidized nanodiamond on negatively charged cemented carbide substrate. The DND particle adsorption and adhesion of nanocrystalline diamond films on WC-Co substrate strongly depended on factors, such as concentration of lysine, pH of seeding solution and concentration of DND particles. The highest nucleation density of 6.5 × 10 10  cm −2 was achieved with optimal colloidal stability, which was 10–100 times higher than most earlier published results on WC-Co substrate. Moreover, nanocrystalline diamond thin films were deposited uniformly and densely on cutting inserts while the film adhesion was significantly improved. Compared to diamond films prepared without the addition of lysine, the friction coefficient was 3-times lower. Therefore, electrostatic induced adsorption of diamond nanoparticles can serve to increase tool lifetime and enhance surface quality of a workpiece.

Ni/WC-Mo2C ternary-interface electrocatalyst for bidirectional optimization of HER and OER

Bao Liu,Yi Li,Pengcheng Ding,Dan Li,Jiwei Li,Xuanwei Zhao,Jia Zu,Maoyu Wang,Ye Sun,Miao Yu

Developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting remains challenging due to the antagonistic demands of oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we present a ternary heterointerface non-precious catalyst, Ni/WC-Mo 2 C, for bidirectional HER and OER optimization. Combining in situ characterization and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate how this design overcomes conventional Schottky junction limitations: (i) The band gradient of the WC-Mo 2 C semiconductor heterojunction synergizes with metallic Ni's electron-donating properties to construct an "electron staircase" channel to enhance charge transfer while increasing active electron density and lowering the d -band center; and (ii) ternary interface-induced lattice strain buffering and localized electron redistribution stabilize high-valent Ni species and optimize intermediate adsorption/desorption energetics. This synergy resolves the OER-HER electronic conflict, endowing the catalyst with ultralow overpotentials of merely 26 mV for HER and 153 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The assembled electrolyzer delivers a high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.73 V and sustains stable overall water splitting operation for an extended duration of 1200 h, outperforming noble-metal benchmarks (Pt/C||RuO 2 ). This work establishes a new paradigm for non-precious bifunctional electrocatalyst design through multicomponent heterointerface engineering.

A switchable-selectivity multiple-interface Ni-WC hybrid catalyst for efficient nitroarene reduction

Yuanyuan Ma,Zhongling Lang,Jing Du,Likai Yan,Yonghui Wang,Huaqiao Tan,Shifa Ullah Khan,Yang Liu,Zhenhui Kang,Yangguang Li

Selective reduction of nitroarenes is extremely valuable in industrial chemical production. The main reduced products are usually aniline derivatives obtained using single-component noble- or transition-metal catalysts; however, other important products such as hydrazobenzene derivatives always involve in harsh conditions and multiple reaction steps. Here, we realize an unexpected switchable reduction of nitroarenes into aniline or hydrazobenzene derivatives with high yield and selectivity just by controlling the molar ratio of nitroarenes to N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O with a nickel–tungsten carbide composite nanocatalyst loaded on carbon (Ni-WC/C). A series of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the multiple interfaces between Ni and WC can induce a synergistic effect, significantly modulating the electronic structure of the Ni-WC/C catalyst, and endowing the catalyst with switchable selectivity and high activity for the reduction of nitroarenes by hydrogenation. This synergistic multi-interfacial catalyst may offer a new way to design and explore highly efficient and selective catalysts for the controllable reduction of nitroarenes and similar hydrogenation reactions.

WC/C Composite as an Efficient Photothermal Material for Solar-Driven Seawater Evaporation

Shixu Dong,Weifeng Li,Yumei Long

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation has been recognized as an effective measure to address freshwater scarcity. Photothermal materials lie at the core of this process and have been extensively studied. However, conventional carbon-based materials typically suffer from high thermal emissivity, leading to significant heat loss. Here, we report a tungsten carbide/carbon composite polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel evaporator (PWC) for solar-driven interfacial seawater evaporation. Specifically, a tungsten carbide/carbon (WC/C) composite was synthesized via a straightforward one-step molten salt coating method and exhibited a remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency of 67.1%, attributed to the plasmon resonance absorption effect of WC nanoparticles. When incorporated into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel via a physical-chemical dual-crosslinking strategy, the resulting PWC evaporator achieved a high evaporation rate of 2.99 kg m−2h−1and a conversion efficiency of 90.9% in a 5 wt% NaCl solution under 1 kW m−2illumination. In addition, the evaporator can purify seawater and effectively remove a variety of organic dyes. This study provides a viable strategy for a sustainable freshwater supply.

WC-modified graphene for melt-processed copper composites with high strength and conductivity

Yunzhong Wu,Tong Zhang,Changsheng Xing,Qingtan Ren,Jiaxu Shuang,Miao Wang,Jie Sheng,Lidong Wang,Weidong Fei

Melting process is the most efficient and economical method for industrial-scale copper production. However, graphene/copper (Gr/Cu) composites are difficult to fabricate by this method due to the extremely poor wettability between graphene and molten copper, which hinders uniform dispersion. To address this challenge, tungsten carbide (WC) modified physically exfoliated graphene (WG P ), synthesized via carbothermal reduction, was introduced into molten copper. By adjusting the WC content, the wettability of WG P with molten copper was significantly improved, reducing the contact angle from 140° to 29.2° and enabling uniform dispersion in the matrix. The resulting composite with an initial input of 5 wt% WG P (5WG P /Cu) achieved an actual mass fraction of 2.34 wt%, exhibiting a tensile strength of 506 MPa in the cold-rolled state, retaining 310 MPa after annealing at 500 °C for 10 min. After annealing, 2WG P /Cu exhibited an electrical conductivity (EC) of 101.6% IACS at 20 °C, and at 180 °C its EC remained 2.7% higher than that of pure Cu measured at the same temperature. van der Waals interaction analysis based on Lifshitz theory revealed that interfacial WC plays a decisive role in enabling spontaneous capture during solidification. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrate that the WG P -Cu interface exhibits a more pronounced load transfer effect compared with the G P -Cu interface. This work overcomes a critical bottleneck in the molten-state processing of Gr/Cu composites and provides a scalable, industrially viable strategy for high-performance composite production.

WC recovery from waste cemented carbides by tailored oxygen-containing molten salt electrorefining

Fei Gao,Bo Liao,Wenmiao Li,Rui Yu

Molten salt electrorefining offers a promising approach for green and efficient recycling of waste cemented carbides. However, the conventional halide-based electrolytes suffer from volatile tungsten halide losses and only recover metallic tungsten, necessitating energy-intensive carburization to recover tungsten carbide (WC). Herein, we propose a novel electrolytic refining and recovery method based on an oxygen-containing CaCl 2 -CaO molten salt electrolyte. The introduction of CaO suppresses the formation of volatile tungsten halides, enabling simultaneous dissolution of carbon (C) and tungsten (W) in the WC-Co anode to non-volatile CaCO 3 and CaWO 4 , respectively. Retention of Co in the anode slime is achieved through controlling anodic potential, realizing component separation. The dissolved CaCO 3 and CaWO 4 are reduced at the cathode, resulting in the generation of WC powder. This work accomplishes the direct recycling of WC from spent cemented carbides without intermediate stages. The composite products of WC and carbon are deposited on the cathodes, of which morphologies are comprised of granular aggregates and flakes. The presence of carbon suppresses the formation of W 2 C and W. However, the residual carbon does not affect hard alloy reprocessing since the W/C ratio can be adjusted via controlled W addition during subsequent alloying. This paper proposes a novel short-process green recycling technology for strategic tungsten resources.

High stability of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from Ru-WC/NC 0D-2D nanocomposites

Jindou Hu,Xiaoyan Lu,Guiling Ren,Xinhui Jiang,Junhong Li,Anjie Liu,Zhenjiang Lu,Jing Xie,Aize Hao,Yali Cao

Pt based noble metal catalysts are important and efficient electrocatalysts during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the HER of Pt based noble metal catalysts have poor stability and high cost. Herein, Unique Ru loaded the tungsten carbide/nitrogen doped carbon (Ru-WC/NC) 0D-2D nanocomposites were fabricated by gas-phase reduction pyrolysis process to solve the problem of poor stability and high cost. Specifically, 0D WC-supported ultra-small Ru (∼2 nm) was anchored on nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets. Even with a remarkably low Ru loading of just 2.82 %, the developed catalyst achieves comparable high catalytic performance to that of a 20 % Pt/C catalyst and demonstrates superior stability. Under a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the Ru (2) -WC/NC catalyst shows an overpotential of 30 mV in acidic conditions and 51 mV in alkaline environments. Additionally, the overpotential of Ru (2) -WC/NC lower than that of commercially 20 % Pt/C at high current densities exceeding 50 mA cm −2 . The total potential of water splitting for the two-electrode system comprising Ru (2) -WC/NC with commercial ruthenium oxide was 1.56 V at 10mA cm −2 . Most importantly, the stability of Ru (2) -WC/NC is much better than that of Pt/C. Theoretical calculation results further revealed that the ΔG H* of Ru (2) -WC/NC catalyst could be reduced through synergistic interactions between Ru and WC, thereby optimizing the kinetics of HER. This study offers both theoretical insights and practical methodologies for the synthesis and evaluation of electrocatalysts modified with low loading of noble metals.

Recovery of tungsten from WC–Co hard metal scraps using molten salts electrolysis

Ming Li,Xiaoli Xi,Zuoren Nie,Liwen Ma,Qingqing Liu

The recycling of WC–Co hard metal scraps has been taken into consideration in the literature, due to the release of toxic substances and long recovery process. In this study, the recovery of tungsten process, based on the molten salt electrolysis treatment of WC–Co hard metal scraps, was developed. The anode polarization curves were applied to investigate the dissolution of the WC–Co hard metal scrap. Then, the electrochemical behavior of tungsten and cobalt ions dissolved from WC–Co scrap anode, was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The results demonstrated that the reduction of tungsten and cobalt ions occurred through a one-step process involving the transfer of two electrons. This process was achieved by the diffusion of tungsten and cobalt ions in the melts. Finally, the parameters, such as the electrolysis current, the electrolysis duration and temperatures, were applied to analyze the effect of different electrolysis conditions on the composition of recycled products. The results demonstrated that the electrolysis current and the electrolysis temperature, compared to electrolysis duration, have significant effects on the selectivity of tungsten recycling. Furthermore, the analysis of cathode products demonstrated that a tungsten powder of approximately 500   nm could be selectively recovered from WC–Co hard metal scrap with the electrolysis condition of 60   mA for 4   h at 1073   K in NaF–KF molten salt.

N-doped graphene supported W2C/WC as efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Xiao-Chun Deng,He-Qiang Chang,Guo-Hua Zhang

Tungsten carbides (W 2 C and WC) materials, as promising non-precious electrocatalysts , possess highly efficient activity for HER . Herein, N-doped graphene supported tungsten carbide (N–W 2 C/WC) nanocomposite is synthesized by spray drying process followed with a two-step pyrolysis treatment , which exhibits a remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and excellent stability in acidic solution and alkaline solution. N–W 2 C/WC displays low overpotentials of 166 mV and 125 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and small Tafel slopes of 60.97 and 62.66 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively. After 1000 cycles, the electrocatalytic activity of N–W 2 C/WC is almost no change in acidic media but slightly decreases in alkaline media . This work might provide a new way to explore high comprehensive performance tungsten-based electrocatalyst for HER.

Influence of Ru on the microstructure and performance of WC-Co cemented carbides

Hong Zeng,Wenbin Liu,Chongbin Wei

This study investigated the microstructure and properties of cemented carbides before and after the addition of Ru. The hardness and elastic modulus of the binder phase of Ru-containing cemented carbides were higher, and the hardness at room temperature and high temperature were also high. In particular, the oxidation resistance of Ru-containing cemented carbides was enhanced at high temperatures. Therefore, the solid solution-strengthening effect of the binder phase containing Ru was significant, which was conducive to the improvement of the high-temperature hardness and enhancement of the high-temperature characteristics of the alloy.

Strained Ni-WC nano-islands by localized accelerated carbonization emulate noble-metal RWGS activity

Ye Daoping,Wu Zihe,Feng Yifan,Lei Jiwei,Niu Jin,Wu Hao,Cheng Chong,Tang Shengwei,Li Shuang

Among CO 2 emission mitigation strategies, the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction represents a promising route for selective CO 2 -to-CO conversion, enabling subsequent valorization. However, designing selective and stable non-noble metal catalysts for RWGS remains a persistent challenge. In this study, we report a Ni site-induced localized accelerated carbonization process to produce noble metal-like active Ni-WC nano-islands for high-performance RWGS catalysis. Benefiting from the unique structures, the Ni 0.02 WC/WO 2 -NIs catalyst exhibits exceptionally high RWGS activities, with a CO production rate of 2340 mol CO ·mol WC -1 ·h -1 and over 97% CO selectivity. Even after 100 hours of continuous testing at 500 °C, the activity loss of Ni 0.02 WC/WO 2 -NIs was only 0.5%. Unlike the conventional catalyst structure in the RWGS reaction, we demonstrate that the nano-island WC structure with stretch strain ensures the space limitation of electron-rich Ni sites for CO desorption and H 2 dissociation. Integrated in-situ DRIFTS, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations reveal that dual-functional WC/WO x interfaces enhance catalyst activity through bidentate carbonate formation and intensified hydrogen spillover. We suggest that the design of new, efficient, and selective Ni-based noble-metal-like catalysts with nano-island structure through interface synergistic effects offers a promising path to engineering superior RWGS catalysts for CO 2 reduction.

N-S Co-Doped WC Nanoparticles Show High Catalytic Activity in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaobin Lu,Baoxin Wang,Shengtao Li,Feiyan Pan,Xuewei Zhu,Xiaofeng Wei

In the “dual carbon” objective, the preparation of non-precious metal catalysts with low cost and high activity is essential for the study of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). This study employed biomass pomelo peel powder as the carbon source and ammonium metatungstate (AMT) as the tungsten source and, through a facile one-step method in molten salt, fabricated a biomass carbon-based nanocatalyst featuring carbon flakes adorned with tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles. Dicyandiamide and cysteine were introduced as nitrogen and sulfur sources, respectively, to explore the impacts of N-S elemental doping on the structure, composition, and HER performance of the WC/C catalyst. The experimental results showed that N-S doping changed the electronic structure of WC and increased the electrochemically active surface area, resulting in a significant increase in the HER activity of WC/C@N-S catalysts. The WC/C@N-S catalyst was evaluated with hydrogen evolution performance in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4solution. When the cathodic current density reached 10 mA/cm2, the overpotential was 158 mV, and the Tafel slope was 68 mV/dec, underscoring its excellent HER performance. The outcomes offer novel insights into the high-value utilization of agricultural biomass resources, and pave the way for the development of cost-effective, innovative hydrogen evolution catalysts.
