Colloidal WOx Quantum Dot Films with Tunable Electrochromic Performance via Surface Ligand Engineering: Implications for Flexible Electrochromic Devices

Congkai Guo,Yao Liu,Xiaoyu Yao,Wenjuan Xia,Shaoyang Xu,Lianjun Xiao,Guohua Wu,Yaohong Zhang

Low-dimensional tungsten oxide (WOx) nanomaterials, characterized by large active surface areas and electrochemical activity, have recently emerged as a hot research area in the field of electrochromism. In oil-phase synthesis, long-chain ligands are commonly employed for synthesizing and stabilizing colloidal WOx quantum dots (QDs) as well as preventing QDs aggregation, but they form a dense insulating coating that impedes charge transfer between QDs which must be removed during the fabrication of solid films, significantly affecting their electrochromic performance. In this work, we innovatively adopted a solid-state ligand exchange method to employ short-chain organic molecular ligands with thiol functional groups such as 1,2-ethanediol (EDT) and 3-mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA), along with halide ion ligands such as tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), to replace the original oleic acid ligands on the surface of colloidal WOx QDs which was synthesized by a solvothermal method, thereby preparing WOx QD solid films. Subsequently, the effects of different ligands on the electrical and electrochromic properties of the WOx QD films were systematically investigated. Results revealed that EDT-modified WOx QD films exhibited the highest optical modulation (80.3% at 750 nm) and fastest response times (tc/tb = 5.49/3.50 s) among other ligands-modified WOx QD films due to its lower defect state and higher ion diffusion rate, demonstrating outstanding electrochromic performance. Notably, the WOx QD films prepared by this method require no annealing treatment, supporting the development of highly efficient, flexible inorganic electrochromic devices.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Engineered WOX Nanowire-Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Biosensor with Lyophilized CRISPR/Cas13a Platform for CHIKV Detection

Zhenzhen Liu,Jianrong Qi,Lili Sun,Junhua Su,Wenjun Li,Lei Wu,Yufeng Liang,Chuhong Wei,Fangfang He,Yao Han,Yansong Sun,Huacheng Yan,Hao Li,Rui Xiao

The outbreak of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has caused widespread acute morbidity with severe polyarthralgia or chronic arthritis, placing a great challenge to public health and socioeconomic development. Establishing a rapid and highly sensitive detection technology is crucial for achieving precise control and prevention. Here, we established a CRISPR/Cas13a-mediated SERS lateral flow immunoassay platform for rapid and highly sensitive detection of CHIKV. One-dimensional nanowires loading Au nanoparticles were used to prepare SERS tags, presenting excellent SERS-enhanced performances and superior applicability to directional flow on the test strip. For the best performance, the structure of WOX nanowires was regulated by adjusting the addition concentration of ascorbic acid during the synthesis process, resulting in a stronger LSPR effect derived from more Au NPs in situ grown on highly reducing WOX. Furthermore, the lyophilized CRISPR/Cas system greatly simplified the workflow. In the optimal conditions, the limit of detection reached 0.56 and 1.03 copies/μL for the CHIKV plasmid and inactivated viruses by this method, respectively. Furthermore, 34 clinical serum samples were accurately diagnosed by our proposed method, 100% consistent with qPCR. This platform with the advantages of simple operation and rapid response provides a reliable technical tool for the early precise identification and efficient monitoring of CHIKV.

Construction of ultrafine and highly dispersed RuSe2 on WOx by “atom-to-cluster” strategy for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Fengyue Sun,Wenjing Bao,Chao Feng,Jiahui Bi,Changle Yue,Cong Zhang,Na Liu,Haoyuan Hao,Yukun Lu

The rational design and controllable construction of efficient and stable electrocatalysts is an inevitable trend in sustainable hydrogen production. The transition metal selenides play an important role in the highly active hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we put forward an “atom-to-cluster” strategy assisted by lacunary polyoxometalates (POMs) to successfully prepare highly dispersed RuSe 2 -WO x @HMCS electrocatalyst. The vacancy-directed effect of lacunary [PW 9 O 34 ] 9− (PW 9 ) was utilized to anchor Ru via coordination bonds and achieve uniform dispersion of Ru at the atomic level. The uniform dispersion of the precursor Ru x [PW 9 O 34 ] (Ru x PW 9 ) at the molecular level was achieved by confining Ru x PW 9 within the mesopores of hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCS). Ultrafine (≈2 nm) and highly dispersed RuSe 2 on WO x was successfully produced at the cluster level by using in situ selenization. Corresponding theoretical calculations demonstrate that the secondary support WO x in combination with RuSe 2 has the synergistic effect in electrocatalytic HER, responding to the significance of trivacant PW 9 . Meanwhile, the conductive support HMCS could promote the exposure of active sites and accelerate electron transfer . Consequently, RuSe 2 -WO x @HMCS exhibited excellent HER activity with overpotentials of only 58 mV and 60 mV at a current density of 10 mA∙cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH solutions, respectively. This study provides a feasible “atom-to-cluster” strategy derived from POMs for the modulation and fabrication of low-cost and high-quality HER electrocatalysts.

Regulating oxygen defects via atomically dispersed alumina on Pt/WOx catalyst for enhanced hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol

Man Yang,Keying Wu,Shaodong Sun,Yujing Ren

Tungsten-based catalyst has been widely investigated in the field of selective hydrogenolysis of secondary C O bond, such an important yet challenging strategy, in glycerol conversion, in which the product 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) is of great value in polyester industry. Unfortunately, though it has been proved to be highly active, the identification of the intrinsic tungsten oxide active sites still remains unrevealed to date due to its complex microstructure. Herein, we incorporate atomically dispersed alumina as promoter in the context of the selective hydrogenation of glycerol and report a Pt/Al-WO x catalyst. This catalyst decidedly outperforms the unpromoted Pt/WO x , which elevates the 1,3-PDO yield to 2 times. Spectroscopy characterizations and chemisorption experiments have revealed that the high activity and selectivity of Pt/Al-WO x catalyst results from the more oxygen vacancies on WO x in-situ generation by the acceleration of atomically dispersed alumina in hydrogen atmosphere, which increases the selective adsorption of glycerol and the in-situ Brønsted acid sites for the selective activation of secondary C O bonds, thus largely augmenting the hydrogenolysis performance. This discovery not only provides the new strategy of defect engineering to enhance hydrogenolysis performance of secondary C O bond in biomass compounds, but reveals the unique role of the unsaturated coordination structure of WO x in chemoselective hydrogenolysis reactions.

Pair-Site Rh-WOx/SiO2 catalyst for hydroformylation of isobutene: An interface electronic regulation strategy to enhance catalytic efficiency

Zhibin Xian,Shilin Bo,Xinjun Xu,Hui Wan,Wei Du,Guofeng Guan

Hydroformylation plays a crucial role in the modern chemical industry by enabling the efficient production of aldehydes, which are essential raw materials for a wide range of chemicals. In this study, we reported a pair-site 0.2Rh-0.8WO x /SiO 2 catalyst that demonstrated exceptional performance in isobutene hydroformylation. The catalyst achieved an isovaleraldehyde yield of 89.57 % (TON=8936) after 5 h of reaction at 90 °C and 5 MPa, and retained 85.0 % of its initial yield after four cycles. This performance was significantly superior to that of the catalyst prior to the introduction of W and proved more suitable for the hydroformylation reaction of isobutene compared to previously reported Al 2 O 3 -supported pair-site catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that W served as an electronic modulator in the catalytic system. The charge transfer from Rh to W enabled W to adsorb and convert excess CO on the Rh surface, thereby creating vacant active sites for the subsequent insertion of olefin and CO, ultimately enhancing the hydroformylation performance. The pair-site catalyst developed in this study exhibited remarkable improvements in both catalytic activity and stability, offering valuable guidance for catalyst design from an interface science perspective.

Improving both activity and stability for direct conversion of cellulose to ethanol by decorating Pt/WOx with mononuclear NbOx

Weixiang Guan,Chen Cao,Fei Liu,Aiqin Wang,Tao Zhang

Chemocatalytic conversion of cellulose to ethanol provides an alternative route for biofuel production with a theoretical carbon yield of 100%; however, it faces significant challenges of high catalyst cost and poor catalyst stability. In this work, we report a new strategy to decrease the use of expensive noble metals, by decorating mononuclear NbOx on a low-Pt Pt/WOx catalyst surface. The resulting 0.1Nb/0.5Pt/WOx catalyst gave rise to an ethanol yield of 33.7% together with an ethylene glycol yield of 21.8%, and the noble metal efficiency reached 25.90 gethanol gPt−1 h−1, an increase by a factor of 2–10 compared to those in the literature. Moreover, the catalyst stability was significantly enhanced by the decoration of mononuclear NbOx, allowing for recycling at least 7 times without obvious activity decay. Characterization revealed that Pt was highly dispersed at subnanometer and single atom scales, and modification with mononuclear NbOx facilitated hydrogen spillover and created more oxygen vacancies on the WOx surface upon hydrogen reduction, thus generating a higher density of Brønsted acid sites. This effect not only favored cellulose conversion to ethylene glycol but also promoted the hydrogenolysis of ethylene glycol to ethanol.

Significant promotion of MgOy in bifunctional Pt-WOx-MgOy catalysts for the chemoselective conversion of glucose to lower polyols

Shuang Luo,Jingwei Li,Jiansu Ran,Ruixue Yangcheng,Yuntong Cui,Yuxin Zhang,Jianjian Wang

A novel catalyst prepared by a facile ‘one-pot’ solvothermal method was developed for the efficient production of lower polyols from glucose solution. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the yield of diols was up to 50.7%, outperforming the recent works reported in the literature (<48%). Deeper investigation results revealed that the modification of MgO y on Pt-WO x could tune the surface acid-base properties, thereby promoting the yield of lower polyols. Combining the experimental and characterization results, a possible reaction mechanism during the conversion of glucose to lower polyols over Pt-WO x -MgO y was proposed.

Effects of Different Al2O3 Supports on Pt/WOx-Based Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenolysis of Glucose to 1,2-Propylene Glycol

Zhuoran Wang,Wenjia Li,Zhou Zhang,Lili Jia,Jia Wang

The hydrogenolysis of glucose to 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2-PG) has become a powerful and practical approach to using biomass resources. A series of Pt (2%)/WOx (7.5%) catalysts supported on different kinds of γ-Al2O3 were prepared by stepwise incipient wetness impregnation. The effects of Al2O3 supports on the physicochemical parameters and catalytic capabilities of catalysts used in the hydrogenolysis of glucose to 1,2-PG were investigated. Subsequently, an attempt was made to relate the catalytic activities to the structures of the W species. When Nano-Al2O3 was used as the support, the Pt/WOx/Nano-Al2O3 catalyst demonstrated the best performance, yielding 55.8% 1,2-PG after heating at 245 °C for 1 h. The excellent performance of the Pt/WOx/Nano-Al2O3 catalyst was attributed to the high dispersion of the Pt center and the optimal W species structure on the catalyst surface (monodisperse W species coexisting with the polymerized W species).

Tailoring hole injection of sol–gel processed WOx and its doping in PEDOT:PSS for efficient ultraviolet organic light-emitting diodes

Yongfang Yuan,Xiaowen Zhang,Dongliang Li,Xiuyun Zhang,Lihui Wang,Zongliu Lu,Liming Liu,Feng Chi

Hole injection governs the efficiency of ultraviolet organic light-emitting diodes (UV OLEDs) due to the deep highest occupied molecular orbital level of the emissive molecule. Tungsten oxides (WOx), transition metal oxides with high work functions and good stability, cast light on solving this problem. By a low-cost, scalable and high-throughput manufacturing process, herein the facile synthesis of a WOx solution and its doping in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS + WOx) is systematically investigated for assembling efficient UV OLEDs. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirm that WOx and PEDOT:PSS + WOx have good film morphology and exceptional electronic properties, such as the oxygen deficiency dominated non-stoichiometry of WOx. With PEDOT:PSS + WOx tailoring hole injection and 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole as the emitter, the UV OLEDs show outstanding electro-optic performance, with a radiance of 3.98 mW cm−2, external quantum efficiency of 2.30%, electroluminescence peak at 400 nm and full width at half maximum of 47 nm, which is superior to the performance of the corresponding reference materials. The mechanism of charge transfer from the PEDOT polycation to WOx, enhancing conductivity, is responsible for the robust hole injection/transport and is further elucidated by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy, contributing to the optimization of the carrier balance and recombination zone. Our results illustrate an alternative approach for boosting UV OLED performance and advancing organic electronics.

Selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol toward 1-propanol and 1,2-propanediol via tuning the reduction temperature of (Mn)/Pt/WOx catalysts

Mingwei Zhang,Cheng-Bin Hong,Zhaoying Ding,Yujing Weng,Honghui Gong,Haiyong Wang,Yulong Zhang,Yuhe Liao,Haichao Liu

Hydrogenolysis of glycerol is an important reaction in biomass valorization, and requires efficient catalysts for selectively removing its hydroxyl groups to yield valuable chemicals, such as 1-propanol and 1,2-propanediol. In this work, we synthesized a porous and non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WO x ) by a solvothermal method, and a serious of WO x -supported Pt and Mn ((Mn)Pt/WO x ) catalysts by reduction with H 2 at different temperatures. On these catalysts, the product selectivity in the glycerol hydrogenolysis was significantly influenced by the presence of the Mn species and reduction temperatures. The catalysts after reduction with H 2 at lower temperatures favored the formation of 1-propanol, affording a yield of 88.0 % at 240 °C, while those reduced at higher temperatures facilitated the formation of 1,2-propanediol in a yield of 93.0 % under the same reaction conditions. Extensive analysis of these catalysts by in-situ and ex-situ characterizations showed that the high-temperature reduction led to the formation of MnWO 4 on the Mn/Pt/WO x catalysts and the consequent decrease in the acidic sites and increase in the basic sites, facilitating the alkali-assisted dehydrogenation of glycerol and selective formation of 1,2-propanediol. This study provides fundamental insights into the role of the W and Mn species in tuning the selectivity of the glycerol hydrogenolysis, which will be valuable for designing catalysts towards the valorization of other biomass-based feedstocks.

Multifunctional Hydrogel Containing Oxygen Vacancy-Rich WOx for Synergistic Photocatalytic O2 Production and Photothermal Therapy Promoting Bacteria-Infected Diabetic Wound Healing

Xichen Sun,Pengfei Wang,Liuyan Tang,Ningning Li,Yan-Ru Lou,Yuezhou Zhang,Peng Li

An effective method capable of simultaneously providing antibacterial activity, blood glucose regulation, and angiogenesis promotion for healing bacteria-infected diabetic wounds is not reported to date, but urgently required. In this study, a hydrogel composite ( γ -PGA/PDA/GOx/WO x (PPGW)), endowed with these desired attributes is fabricated by incorporating polydopamine (PDA), glucose oxidase (GOx), and tungsten oxide (WO x ) nanowires into the poly( γ -glutamic acid) ( γ -PGA) framework. The exceptional photothermal conversion properties of PDA facilitated notable antibacterial effects on bacteria-infected diabetic wounds; GOx regulated high blood glucose by consuming glucose and generating hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ); while WO x nanowires displayed remarkable photocatalytic abilities, converting H 2 O 2 into oxygen (O 2 ) when exposed to 808-nm near-infrared radiation. Density functional theory calculations and experiments are conducted to confirm the mechanism of WO x -mediated photocatalytic degradation of H 2 O 2 to produce O 2 . These transformations aided in alleviating the hypoxic conditions in wounds associated with diabetes, expediting angiogenesis, and fostering cell crawling and proliferation. Consequently, the multifunctional hydrogel dressing PPGW, featuring photothermal, antibacterial, and enzyme-catalyzed activity reduces hyperglycemia at the wound site. Moreover, photocatalytic O 2 production represents a promising strategy for addressing chronic bacteria-infected diabetic wounds.

Atomically Permeated MoP-WOx Core-Shell Catalysts for Efficient and Selective Oxidation of Thiophenic Sulfides in Fuels via Direct Electron Transfer Mechanism

Juncong Zou,Xiang Li,Shanying He,Qiuya Niu,Shaohua Wu,Chunping Yang

Heterogeneous interfaces designed rationally in catalysts can induce geometrical, compositional, and electronic effects that can be applied to modulate catalytically active sites and consequently accelerate reaction kinetics. Here, a core-shell heterostructure catalyst consisting of crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP) cores and amorphous tungsten oxide (WO x ) shells on porous carbon nanosheets (PCN) is developed for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuels. The strongly coupled core-shell heterogeneous interface triggers a distinctive atomic permeation effect that induces substantial electron transfer from MoP to WO x and subsequent generation of electron-rich W sites, consequently optimizing the adsorption of intermediates and substrates. The resulting catalyst (WO x @MoP/PCN) demonstrates a turnover frequency as high as 768.1 h −1 for ODS at 60 °C, exceeding that of almost all the state-of-the-art ODS catalysts by 1–2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, a novel surface oxidation pathway based on direct electron transfer is identified in the WO x @MoP/PCN-H 2 O 2 system, which bypasses the formation of reactive oxygen species, consequently endowing the system with a moderate redox potential. Thus, WO x @MoP/PCN exhibits unprecedented selectivity, achieving 100% removal of thiophenic sulfides from real diesel with minimal consumption of oxidant.
