Carbendazim (CBZ) and procymidone (PRO) are two widely used fungicides in agriculture. However, there are still gaps in knowledge regarding about the potential hazards of joint exposure to CBZ and PRO in animals. Here, 6-week-old ICR mice were exposed to CBZ, PRO and CBZ + PRO for 30 days, and metabolomics were performed to discover the mechanism by which the mixture enhanced the effects on lipid metabolism. Co-exposure to CBZ + PRO elevated the body weights, relative liver weights and relative epididymis fat weights, but not in the single exposure groups. Molecular docking analysis suggested that CBZ and PRO combined with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARγ) at the same amino acid site as the agonist rosiglitazone. The RT-qPCR and WB results demonstrated that the levels of PPARγ were higher in the co-exposure group than in the single exposure groups. In addition, hundreds of differential metabolites were discovered by metabolomics and enriched in different pathways, such as pentose phosphate pathway and purine metabolism. A unique effect, a decrease in glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) that promoted more NADPH production, was observed in the CBZ + PRO group. These results demonstrated that exposure to CBZ + PRO caused more serious lipid metabolism disorder in the liver than exposure to a single fungicide, which could provide some new insight for the toxic effects after fungicides joint exposure.

Detection of trace carbendazim in agricultural products or environment is challenging but important for human health and environmental protection. Developing a sensitive and recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is one of the effective methods to detect such pesticide residues. In this work, we developed a facile method to fabricate a three-dimensional cactus-like Ag nanoparticles/CuO/Cu2O nanocomposite (CACN) based on a galvanic replacement reaction between Tollens’ reagent and Cu foam. This design combined the Raman enhancement effect and photocatalytic activity, providing a multifunctional and reusable substrate for highly sensitive SERS detection. It was found that the enhancement and photocatalysis of the CACN substrate were closely related to the concentration of Tollens’ reagent, and the 10-CACN substrate (prepared at 10 mM) demonstrated excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, and recyclability. The substrate was successfully applied for the detection of carbendazim solution with a detection limit of 1.5 × 10–10 M and could be reused up to 7 times. More importantly, the substrate can be employed for the detection of trace carbendazim in real apple peels with a detection limit of ∼8.5 × 10–4 ppm, which is far below that of 2.0 × 10–1 ppm suggested by China, United Kingdom, and European Union. These results suggest that the facile fabrication method and the excellent substrate would facilitate the SERS technology closer to practical application in the detection of pesticide residues.

Carbendazim (CBZ) pesticide residues in food products have become a growing concern in recent years. Herein, a sensitive biosensor for detecting CBZ was developed based on luminescent resonance energy transfer (LRET) from aptamer labeled upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs, donor) to manganese dioxide (MnO 2 , acceptor) nanosheets. The strong overlap between the absorption spectrum of MnO 2 and the UCNPs fluorescence emission allowed the luminescence quenching. With the addition of CBZ, it tended to bind with specific aptamers, which culminated in the UCNPs-aptamer dropping off MnO 2 nanosheets and restoring the fluorescence. A linear calibration plot between logarithmic CBZ concentration and fluorescence intensity was acquired in the range of 0.1–5000 ng·mL −1 , with a limit of detection 0.05 ng·mL −1 , indicating that the UCNPs- MnO 2 aptasensor is a rapid, sensitive and specific quantitative detection platform for CBZ. Furthermore, the precision and accuracy of the developed LRET biosensor was validated by HPLC method with no significant differences.

Carbendazim (CBZ) as a broad spectrum fungicide is widely used in the whole world to contorl plant diseases. With the application of CBZ in the agriculture, it has been detected in vegetables and fruits. Nowadays, it even has been detected in the watercourse and indoor dust. However, the toxic effects of CBZ on aquatic organisms have received limited attention. In this study, male adult zebrafish were exposed at 0, 30 and 100 μg/L CBZ for 21 days to assess its effects on hepatic glycolipid metabolism. After exposure, the body weight and length decreased, but the condition factor increased significantly. Some hepatic biochemical parameters including the levels of glucose, pyruvate, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride (TG) decreased significantly in the liver of zebrafish after exposure with CBZ. Two transaminases alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) also increased significantly, indicating that subchronic CBZ exposure influenced the liver function. Moreover, the relative mRNA levels of some key genes related to the glycolysis and lipid metabolism in the liver also changed significantly. Furthermore, the transcriptome analysis showed that the carbon metabolism, lipid metabolism and detoxification metabolism were also affected in the liver of CBZ exposed zebrafish. Interestingly, we also found the amounts of the Firmicutes , Bacteroidetes , Actinobacteria , α-Proteobacteria , γ-Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia at phylum level significantly decreased in the gut. Sequencing V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA also demonstrated gut microbiota composition changed significantly according to weighted UniFrac distance analysis. Consequently, subchronic CBZ exposure induced hepatic metabolic disorder accompanied by gut microbiota dysbiosis in adult male zebrafish.

A novel aptamer-based sensor was developed using the signal amplification strategy of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and polyethyleneimine modified graphene oxide to achieve trace detection of carbendazim (CBZ). The dual identification of aptamer and antibody was used to avoid false positive results and improve the selectivity. Polyethyleneimine modified graphene oxide (GO-PEI), as a substrate material with excellent conductivity, was modified on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to increase the grafting amount of aptamer on the electrode surface. Moreover, a large number of cyclopentenyl ferrocene (CFc) was aggregated to form long polymer chains through ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), so as to significantly improve the detection sensitivity of the biosensor. The linear range of this sensor was 1 pg/mL–100 ng/mL with a detection limit as low as 7.80 fg/mL. The sensor exhibited excellent reproducibility and stability, and also achieved satisfactory results in actual sample detection. The design principle of such a sensor could provide innovative ideas for sensors in the detection of other types of targets. Graphical abstract

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials are commonly used as sensing materials, but their limited accessibility to active sites and specific surface area restrict their applications. In this study, we proposed a simple method involving facile tannic acid etching and calcination to create NiCo-embedded hollow N-doped carbon nanocubes (NiCo@HNC) using MOFs as sacrificial templates. The resulting NiCo@HNC material has a large specific surface area, improved mass transport channels, and enhanced exposure of electroactive sites due to its unique hollow structure and high porosity, leading to enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Moreover, with the utilization of NiCo@HNC as a substrate material and dopamine as a functional monomer, a ratiometric molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was developed for the selective and sensitive detection of carbendazim (CBZ). This sensor demonstrated a wide linear range of 0.0003–10 μM and a low detection limit of 0.1 nM. In addition, the sensor was utilized for the accurate quantification of CBZ in actual carrot/strawberry samples with a recovery range of 96.0–103.0%, indicating its potential for practical application.

Carbendazim (CBZ) is widely used for crop protection and its residues threaten human health and the environment. Therefore, developing an effective electrocatalyst is important for the extremely sensitive detection of CBZ. Lattice-strain engineering is an effective strategy to change its electronic structure and ultimately optimize the catalytic performance of materials, which can be used as a modification method to improve the detection performance of electrochemical sensors. Herein, a NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs heterojunction with strain effect is prepared by the electrostatic self-assembly method. The structure, morphology, composition, crystallinity and electrochemical performance of NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs are analyzed using various instrumental techniques, in which geometric phase analysis (GPA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) images confirm the lattice-strain generated in NiFeLDH@HsGY-NH2/MWCNTs. The results indicate that the prepared electrochemical sensor exhibited an excellent response for carbendazim (CBZ) in the linear range of 0.05–50.00 μM with a detection limit of 10.00 nM (S/N = 3) under the optimal detection conditions. By analyzing the reasons for the improvement of the catalytic performance of the composite material, it is found that the composite of MWCNTs not only improves the conductivity of NiFeLDH but also regulates the electronic structure of metal atoms through double effects. This study provides new insights into the design of efficient and low-cost catalysts to facilitate electrochemical sensor applications.

Background Electrochemical sensors offer high sensitivity for detecting analytes at ultralow concentrations (nM-pM) but have limited specificity towards target molecules. Nanomaterial modifications are employed to enhance conductivity and catalytic activity. Critically, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) provide a solution for specificity by creating selective recognition cavities complementary to the target analyte. Furthermore, dual-signal ratiometric strategies are indispensable to intrinsically correct for matrix effects and environmental fluctuations, ensuring reliable quantification. For the fungicide carbendazim (CBD), crucial for food safety, reliable on-site detection demands overcoming these combined limitations. We thus developed a ratiometric sensor integrating conductivity-enhanced fluorine-doped β-FeOOH nanorods (F-β-FeOOH NRs) with a CBD-specific MIP layer. Results A novel ratiometric sensor was fabricated by growing F-β-FeOOH NRs on carbon cloth (CC) via one-step hydrothermal synthesis. F-doping was strategically employed to facilitate the electron transfer and enhance the redox reaction of [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-∕4- . A MIP layer was electropolymerized on F-β-FeOOH NRs/CC using CBD as the template and resorcinol/nicotinamide as dual monomers, thereby creating selective recognition sites. The ratiometric mode utilized the CBD oxidation peak (analyte-specific response) and the internal reference signal from [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3-∕4- (internal reference). This dual-signal strategy achieved a wide linear range from 1 to 1000 nM with a low detection limit of 25.6 nM. Real-sample analysis in fruits showed a strong correlation with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results, with recoveries ranging between 98.4% and 105.9%, confirming its accuracy in complex matrices. Significance This work pioneers the integration of fluorine-doped β-FeOOH NRs with MIP-based ratiometric sensing, significantly enhancing sensitivity and anti-interference capability for pesticide monitoring. The sensor’s portability, low cost, and reliability in real samples highlight its practicality for on-site detection of CBD residues in agriculture and food safety. The design strategy paves the way for adapting this platform to detect other environmental contaminants using tailored MIP.

Pesticide residues pose serious threats to food safety and human health, highlighting the need for rapid and sensitive detection methods. Traditional techniques are often time-consuming and complex, whereas Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) offers a fast and highly sensitive alternative. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method using trisodium citrate (TSC) as a reducing agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping agent. By optimizing PVP and TSC concentrations, a novel AgNPs@capillary SERS substrate was fabricated through in situ assembly of AgNPs onto the inner walls of glass capillaries. The substrate enabled rapid, on-site detection of pesticide residues, specifically the neonicotinoid acetamiprid (ACE) and benzimidazole fungicide carbendazim (CBZ). SERS measurements showed strong linear correlations for ACE (R² = 0.9713, 0.01–0.5 μg/mL) and CBZ (R² = 0.9566, 0.005–0.5 μg/mL). Importantly, the detection limits reached 2.28 × 10⁻³ μg/mL for ACE and 6.25 × 10⁻³ μg/mL for CBZ, demonstrating excellent sensitivity. This study confirms the effectiveness of the one-pot synthesized AgNPs@capillary SERS platform as a practical tool for trace-level pesticide monitoring in environmental and food safety contexts.

We reported a carbon nanohorns/gold nanoparticles composites-based impedimetric aptasensor for carbendazim (CBZ) detection in lettuce and orange juice at picogram levels. The increased electron-transfer resistance, resulting from the formation of CBZ-aptamer complex, was recorded by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as the aptasensor response for CBZ. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed aptasensor displayed a linear response for CBZ ranging from 1 to 1000 pg mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.5 pg mL −1 . Noteworthy, the as-developed aptasensor displayed the lowest detection limit for CBZ among the previously reported methods. Common pesticides (atrazine, thiamethoxam , etc.) with 100-fold concentration did not interfere the CBZ detection. For CBZ detection in lettuce and orange juice, satisfactory recoveries were obtained with standard addition method. Statistics demonstrated that no significant differences were found between the data provided by standard HPLC-MS reference method and developed aptasensing method in term of accuracy and precision. We believe that the proposed aptasensor possesses a potential application for CBZ monitoring in agricultural product and food.

Natural balsawood with quick-growing, light-weight and porous structure expects to be a carrier of self-supporting electrode for convenient pesticide residue analysis in food. In this work, the hydrangea-like Ni Ti layered double hydroxide (NiTi-LDH) is in-situ synthesized on the balsawood@few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. The pyrolysis of such precursor leads to the carbonized balsawood@Ti 3 C 2 T x supported pompon-like Ni nanoparticles@N-doped carbon (CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC), which demonstrates the two main structural advantages including the CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x with porous structure as the high-performance substrate and the NC immobilized the high-density distribution of NiNPs as the efficient electrocatalyst. These extraordinary characteristics of CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC contribute to the outstanding electrochemical behaviors for detecting the low-concentration carbendazim (CBZ) pesticide, resulting in 0.36 nM of detection limit and the two-stage linear detection ranges including 1–250 nM and 0.25–20.00 μM. More importantly, such CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC with free-cutting can be directly utilized as the quickly replaceable working electrode to create a prototype of portable sensor with the self-designed electronic system. Furthermore, a rapid sampling process matched such portable electrochemical sensor is proposed for the quick detection of residual CBZ on the surfaces of vegetables and fruits. Our research proposes a method to construct the high-performance self-supporting electrode on the basis of natural balsawood@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets for electrochemical sensing.

Melatonin (Mel) serves as an important signalling molecule in various aspects of stress tolerance in plants. However, the function of Mel in pesticide metabolism remains unknown. Here, selecting the widely used fungicide carbendazim (MBC) as the model, we found that exogenous Mel had the ability to alleviate pesticide phytotoxicity and residues in tomato as well as in some other vegetables. Additionally, overexpression of the Mel biosynthetic gene caffeic acid O-methyltransferase 1 ( COMT1 ) significantly enhanced the capacity of the tomato to reduce MBC phytotoxicity and residue. This outcome was mainly because of the Mel-induced antioxidant capability, as well as the key detoxification process. Indeed, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxides significantly decreased after applying exogenous Mel or overexpressing COMT1 , which resulted from direct ROS scavenging, and increased Mel levels significantly enhanced antioxidant enzymatic activity. More importantly, Mel activated the ascorbate-glutathione cycle to participate in glutathione S-transferase-mediated pesticide detoxification. A grafting experiment showed that rootstocks from COMT1 transgenic plants increased the Mel accumulation of wild-type scions, resulting in MBC metabolism in the scions. To our knowledge, this is the first report providing evidence of Mel-induced pesticide metabolism, which provides a novel approach for minimizing pesticide residues in crops by exploiting plant self-detoxification mechanisms.
