Utilizing antibacterial packaging material is an effective approach to delay fruit rotting and spoilage thereby minimizing financial losses and reducing health harm. However, the barrier and mechanical properties of biodegradable antibacterial packaging materials are barely compatible with transparency. Herein, antimicrobial nanoparticles encapsulating citral (ANPs) were first prepared by emulsification under the stabilization of oxidized dextran (ODE) and ethylene diamine. Then, composite films with high transparency, good water vapor barrier, and mechanical and antibacterial properties for fruits packaging were prepared from chitosan (CS), carboxymethyl-glucan (CMG), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and ANPs by solvent casting strategy. The synergistic effects of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding could regulate crystalline architecture, generating high transparency of the composite films (90 %). The mechanical properties of the composite film are improved with elongation at break up to 167 % and stress up to 32 MPa. The water vapor barrier property of the film is appropriate to the packed fruit for less weight loss and firmness remaining. Simultaneously, the addition of ANPs endowed the film with excellent antimicrobial and UV-barrier capabilities to reduce fruit mildew, thereby extending the shelf life of fruits. More importantly, the composite polymer solution could be sprayed or dipped directly on fruits as a coating for food storage to improve food shelf life, substantially expanding its ease of use and scope of use.

Listeria monocytogenes ( L. monocytogenes ) is a foodborne pathogen often found in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, posing significant threats to human health. In this study, an active film based on cross-linking via Schiff base and electrostatic interaction to inactivate L. monocytogenes on RTE foods was constructed. Zinc-casein hydrolysate chelates (Zn-HCas) was prepared and blended with cationic starch (CSt) to form the substrates of the film. Then, Citral (CI) with excellent antibacterial properties was added to enhance the biological and packaging properties of the film through covalent cross-linking (Schiff base). Based on the zinc ion-activated metalloproteinases produced by L. monocytogenes , the cross-linked film could be disrupted and the release of CI was accelerated. The variation in color, FTIR, and amino group content proved that Schiff base reaction had taken place. Enhanced mechanical properties, barrier properties, thermal stability and antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes (exceed 99.99 %) were obtained from the CI/Zn-HCas/CSt film. The application on RTE cheese results demonstrated that the cross-linked film could be employed in active packaging field with the ability in maintaining the original chroma and texture properties of RTE cheese. In summary, the prepared cross-linked film could be used as an active packaging against L. monocytogenes contamination with great potential.

The citral-based acylthiourea derivative e14 was identified as a potent synergist for chlorothalonil (CT) against Colletotrichum fructicola. The optimized mixture (ECS, 25% e14) exhibited strong synergistic activity (synergistic ratio (SR) = 2.30), significantly enhancing disease control efficacy while enabling reduced fungicide dosage. Mechanistic studies revealed that e14 specifically targets mitochondrial complex I by binding to the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (ND5), thereby disrupting oxidative phosphorylation and inducing energy depletion and oxidative stress. This distinct mode of action differs from that of CT, minimizing the risk of cross-resistance. Importantly, e14 exhibits low mammalian cytotoxicity. This study elucidates the synergistic mechanism of ECS and the enhancing role of e14, thereby providing a solid foundation for the development of effective fungicide synergists.

Natural mildew preventives, like citral, have great potential to protect bamboo from mildew, while their long-lasting antimildew performance is yet to be challenged owing to their oxidability and volatility. Inspired by biomimetic mineralization, in this work, citral@ZIF-67 particles were synthesized by encapsulating citral into a zeolite imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) cage and introduced into a bamboo structure. Benefiting from the unique cage structure and large surface area of ZIF-67, it can encapsulate sufficient citral molecules. The encapsulation reduced the particle size of ZIF-67 due to the nucleation of citral. Furthermore, the surface area, pore size, and volume of citral@ZIF-67 particles gradually decreased with the increase in loading amounts of citral. ZIF-67 exhibited a certain antibacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus. The encapsulation of citral can further enhance the antibacterial activity of ZIF-67. In addition, the citral@ZIF-67 showed slow-release performance that followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. After the citral@ZIF-67 treatment, bamboo showed no mold spots on the surface with an infection grade of 0, which was retained, even though bamboo was conditioned at 50 °C and 85% relative humidity for 10 days. This proposed method can effectively improve the stability of natural mildew preventives and endow bamboo with long-term antimildew properties with low cost and minimized environmental impacts.
