With the aim to enhance the direct conversion of raw corn stover into furfural, a promising approach was proposed employing a novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst (SC-CaC t -700) in different solvents. The novel catalyst was characterized by elemental analysis, N 2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, XPS, TEM and SEM. The developed catalytic system demonstrated superior efficacy for furfural production from raw corn stover. The effects of reaction temperature, residence time, catalyst loading, substrate concentration and solvent were investigated and optimized. 93% furfural yield was obtained from 150 mg corn stover at 200 °C in 100 min using 45 mg catalyst in γ-valerolactone (GVL). In comparison, 51.5% furfural yield was achieved in aqueous media under the same conditions (200 °C, 5 h, and 45 mg catalyst), which is of great industrial interest. Furfural was obtained from both hemicelluloses and cellulose in corn stover, which demonstrated a promising routine to make the full use of biomass.

A series of boron doped magnetic zirconium catalysts were developed for the selective transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural (FFR) into furfuryl alcohol (FA) using 2-propanol as hydrogen source and solvent. Full characterizations with XRD, SEM, TG, Py-IR, NH 3 -TPD, and CO 2 -TPD techniques were undertaken to uncover structural properties of magnetic catalysts. Boron doped magnetic zirconium catalysts endowing with adjustable acid-base sites exhibited excellent performance as well as good regenerability in the transfer hydrogenation of FFR, where almost 100% FA yield was achieved in the presence of 2-propanol and the catalyst still sustained good activity after being used five times. Suitable acidity/basicity ratio of 3.8 ~ 4.0 apparently benefited the selective production of FA. Gratifyingly, the activation energy for FA formation over Zr 1 B 3 FeO was as low as 48.3 kJ/mol. In addition, plausible reaction mechanism involving two H-transfer paths for transfer hydrogenation of FFR into FA under the catalysis of active Zr/B species was proposed.

Preparation of biopolymer-based catalysts for the conversion of carbohydrate polymers to new energies and chemicals is a hot topic nowadays. With the aim to develop an ecological method to convert xylose into furfural without the use of inorganic acids, a biopolymer-derived catalyst (lignosulfonic acid) was successfully used to catalyze xylose into furfural in ionic acid ([BMIM]Cl). The characteristics of lignosulfonic acid (LS) and effects of solvents, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst loading on the conversion of xylose were investigated in detail, and the reusability of the catalytic system was also studied. Results showed that 21.0% conversion could be achieved at 100 °C for 1.5 h. The method not only avoids pollution from conventional mineral acid catalysts and organic liquids but also maked full use of a byproduct (lignin) from the pulp and paper industry, thus demonstrating an environmentally benign process for the conversion of carbohydrates into furfural.

Transformation of furfural (FFA), a typical representative of furan platform chemicals derived from the acid hydrolysis of hemicellulose to the high value chemicals tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) and cyclopentanol (CPL), has drawn great attention. In this study, we report an efficient NiCo bimetallic catalyst with highly dispersed NiCo-based metals on a porous carbon matrix for FFA hydrogenation. For different FFA conversion reactions of the bimetallic catalysts, the tetrahydrofurfuryl (THFOL) yield was up to 95% over the Ni3Co1@C catalyst at 80 °C. Furthermore, cyclopentanol (CPL) could also be obtained with a yield of 95% with Ni1Co1@C as the catalyst at 160 °C in an aqueous medium. The detailed physicochemical characterization was carried out by means of XRD, SEM, BET, ICP, XPS, NH3-TPD and Raman analysis. With the addition of Co in the bimetallic catalysts, the average particle size decreased obviously to around 5.7 nm in NixCoy/C catalysts with different Ni/Co ratios, which increased the dispersion and improved the catalytic activity of FFA hydrogenation. The NixCoy@C catalysts could be recovered and efficiently applied in the next run for four consecutive recycling tests in FFA hydrogenation to the corresponding target products under different reaction conditions. The results suggested that the NixCoy@C catalyst appeared to increasingly favor the formation of Ni–Co alloys and suggested a metallic active site in FFA hydrogenation with the addition of the Co element. Mechanistic study indicated that temperature was a key factor contributing to the formation of different desired products (THFOL and CPL). Furthermore, water was another essential factor, which was responsible for the arrangement of the furan compound.

Furfuryl ethyl ether (FEE), an important gasoline additive, is synthesized by a one-step reductive etherification of furfural (FF) by Nb 2 O 5 nanowires loaded with Pd as catalysts. Compared with other materials, the catalyst had a suitable synergistic effect between the reductive sites Pd 0 and the acidic sites of Nb 2 O 5 nanowires, effectively improving the yield of FEE. In ethanol, at 453 K and under 1 MPa H 2 pressure, the catalyst 1.0 wt% Pd/Nb 2 O 5 showed excellent catalytic performance in the reductive etherification reaction, and the yield of FEE reached 87.7%, higher than Pd/C whose yield was 81%. This result showed a feasible way to simplify the FEE preparation process, thus reducing production costs.

Nitrogen-rich zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are ideal precursors for the synthesis of metal single atoms anchored on N-doped carbon. However, the microporous structures of conventional ZIFs lead to low mass transfer efficiency and low metal utilization of their derivatives. Here, we construct a composite of Co single atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (Co-SA/3DOM-NC) by two-step pyrolysis of ordered macro/microporous ZnCo-ZIF. Co-SA/3DOM-NC shows high activity in the oxidative esterification of furfural, achieving a 99% yield of methyl 2-furoate under mild reaction conditions, which is significantly superior to the microporous and the Co-nanoparticle counterparts. The high activity of Co-SA/3DOM-NC should be attributed to the CoN4 centers with high intrinsic activity and the ordered macroporous structure, promoting the mass transfer of reactants and accessibility of active sites.

Introduction of Sn boosts selective C O hydrogenation of furfural. • Catalyst shows 99% yield of furfuryl alcohol without any external heat input. • Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by ethylene glycol method enhances activity. • Constructed metal-support interaction strengthens the reusability. Catalytic hydrogenation of C O is critical for converting biomass-derived platform molecules to value-added chemicals. However, how to strike a balance for the catalysis between high efficiency and green production remains a challenge. In this work, carbon supported Ru-Sn catalyst showed excellent room-temperature performance in furfural hydrogenation, > 99% furfural conversion with > 99% product selectivity to furfuryl alcohol can be achieved without external heating source. The solvent was found to play an important role in catalytic performance. Compared with Ru/C, introduction of Sn markedly enhanced the catalytic performance. The introduced Sn behaves as the electrophilic C O activation sites in catalysis, a synergy between Ru and Sn enhances the activity. Ru-Su/C synthesized via ethylene glycol (E-G) method showed a higher activity than that synthesized by hydrazine hydrate (H-H) method, whereas the latter exhibited a better reusability than the former. Ru-SnO x interface fabricated by E-G method boosts the catalytic activity, whereas the strong anchoring effect of the support in Ru-Sn/C (H-H) strengthens the catalytic reusability. This study revealed a practical way to regulate the Ru-Sn sites configuration of Ru-Sn/C used in efficient furfural hydrogenation at room-temperature. We report a cobalt catalyst supported on spherical nitrogen-doped carbon (CoNC) prepared via a coordinated assembly of EDTA, melamine, and chitosan followed by pyrolysis. This strategy generates uniformly dispersed Co nanoparticles strongly anchored by N functionalities. The optimized CoNC2 catalyst (4 wt % Co) exhibits outstanding performance in liquid-phase furfural hydrogenation, achieving >99% conversion and >99% selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions (160 °C, 30 bar H2). In situ DRIFTS, XPS, catalytic controls, and DFT calculations support a bifunctional working model in which metallic Co promotes H2 activation while adjacent N-containing environments favor selective carbonyl adsorption. This synergistic interaction suppresses competing ring hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis pathways. The catalyst shows excellent stability and recyclability. Owing to the use of earth-abundant cobalt and renewable carbon precursors, this approach provides a scalable and sustainable platform for the selective upgrading of biomass-derived aldehydes.

The selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL) to furfuryl alcohol (FA) derived from the biomass sources is crucial for alleviating the energy crisis. Cu-based catalysts with low cost and high selectivity are widely employed in this reaction. To enhance the activity of Cu-based catalysts under mild conditions, this study synthesized the bimetallic CuRu/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with varying Ru contents via the deposition-reduction method. The physicochemical properties characterized by XRD, TEM, H 2 -TPR, H 2 -TPD, XPS, and FT-IR techniques revealed that Ru doping promoted the dispersion of Cu species and improved the H 2 adsorption ability. Additionally, strong Cu-Ru interactions, which derived from electron transfer from Cu to Ru, enhanced the metal reducibility. As a result, bimetallic 5Cu1Ru/Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited the outstanding performance of 99.9% FAL conversion and 99.9% FA selectivity within 4 h at 90 °C under 1 MPa H 2 pressure, with an exceptionally low apparent activation energy of 118.4 kJ/mol. TG analysis indicated that increasing Ru content lowered the temperature of FA desorption, thereby easily re-exposing the active sites for reaction cycle. The current investigation provides a reference for designing the efficient bimetallic catalysts to achieve high FAL conversion under mild conditions.

Furfural (FF), an important biomass platform compound, is extensively utilized in the synthesis of high-value-added chemicals, fuels, resins, and pharmaceuticals. To achieve the efficient conversion of xylose into FF, we systematically screened a series of metal salt catalysts in a homogeneous methanol–water system and thoroughly investigated their catalytic performance and reaction mechanisms. The results demonstrated that AlCl 3 exhibited the optimal catalytic activity in this reaction, achieving >99% xylose conversion and a 77.3% FF yield under the conditions of 160 °C and 2 h of reaction. Kinetic studies indicated that the conversion of xylose to intermediates was the rate-determining step, with an apparent activation energy of 42.97 kJ mol −1 . Mechanistic analysis further revealed that AlCl 3 possesses both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, which synergistically catalyze the multi-step reactions – including isomerization, ring-opening, dehydration, and cyclization – of xylose to form FF. This study develops a green and efficient catalytic system prototype with low cost, which not only clarifies the structure–performance relationship of AlCl 3 and the dual function of the methanol–water system, but also provides a theoretical foundation and technical basis for the sustainable production of biomass-based FF.

Furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is commercially available by selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL). A variety of catalysts have been developed for such purpose, among which Cu-based catalysts show superior catalytic performance. However, copper nanoparticles with complex valence states are easy to agglomerate during hydrogenation reaction, which might have a negative influence on the catalytic performance. The carbon coating is an efficient strategy to prevent the sintering of Cu-based catalysts. Herein, a strategy based on the thermal decomposition of Cu-EDTA complex was designed to prepare carbon encapsulated Cu-based catalysts. The prepared catalysts were applied in the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL in the batch reactor. The results showed that a nearly quantitative conversion of FAL with a selectivity of 98.7 % towards FOL was achieved using CuO x @NC-150 (molar ratio of Cu: Na 4 EDTA·4H 2 O=2:1; obtained by oxidative activation at 150 °C) under 140 °C, 3 MPa in 4 h. The performance was comparable to that of the commercial CuCr 2 O 4 catalyst under the identical conditions. In addition, the developed carbon encapsulated Cu-based catalysts exhibited a slightly better stability than CuCr 2 O 4 catalyst in terms of FOL yield in five consecutive cycles. XPS and XAES characterizations implied that the presence of a suitable surface ratio of Cu + /(Cu + +Cu 0 ) of the prepared catalyst may contribute to the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL.

The surface tensions (σ) of binary solutions of diiodomethane (DIM, 1)–furfural (FA, 2), DIM (1)–N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF, 2), and FA (1)–DMF (2) were determined at 25 °C over the entire bulk composition range, and the surface adsorption behavior was analyzed using the surface aggregation adsorption (SAA) model proposed recently. In particular, by combining the SAA model with the Gibbs adsorption equation, the changes in the Gibbs surface excess (Γ2) and the adsorption layer thickness (τ) with the bulk composition (x2,b) were investigated. The SAA model combined with the modified Eberhart model can well describe theσ-isotherms of the three binary solutions. The surface adsorption trends of component 2 in DIM–FA, DIM–DMF, and FA–DMF decrease in turn. The change trends of Γ2andτwithx2,bare dependent on the SAA model parameters, namely, the adsorption equilibrium constant (Kx) and the average aggregation number (n). With an increase inx2,b, Γ2continuously increases whenKx< 2v1/[n(2n− 1)v2] (wherev1andv2are the partial molar volumes of components 1 and 2, respectively); otherwise (i.e.,Kx≥ 2v1/[n(2n− 1)v2]), Γ2initially increases and then decreases, showing a maximum on the Γ2-isotherm. Whenn≥ 1,τgradually decreases with an increase inx2,b; otherwise (i.e.,n< 1),τinitially increases and then decreases, showing a maximum on theτ-isotherm. An increase in the adsorption trend leads to a decrease in both Γ2andτ. This work provides a better understanding of the surface adsorption behavior of liquid mixtures.
