N-doped MOF-lignin hybrid catalyst for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols

Xue Wu,Hui Li,Fei Ge,Wenlin Xu,Hailong Lu,Minghao Zhou

Upgrading of lignin-derived bio-oil to value-added biofuel was of great significance for efficient utilization of renewable resources and reducing the use of fossil fuels. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was considered to be a promising technology for the conversion of lignin-derived bio-oil. Herein, we reported a novel method for the preparation of lignin-MOF derived N-doped catalysts, which was then successfully introduced into the upgrading of lignin-derived phenols and lignin depolymerization. All catalysts were well characterized and Co/CN-0.5–750 exhibited excellent performance during the catalytic HDO process. The optimized catalyst demonstrated highly efficient active hydrogen generation from isopropanol. Moreover, it could afford the best vanillin (VAN) conversion (100 %) and highest 2-Methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) yield (92 %) under the mild reaction conditions (180 °C, 0.5 MPa nitrogen, 2 h). It was confirmed that the excellent performance was related to nitrogen doping. This study could provide some useful insights for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin and its derivative.

Hierarchical meso- and macroporous carbon from lignin for kraft lignin decomposition to aromatic monomers

Kejing Wu,Chunyan Yang,Yi Liu,Changjun Liu,Yingying Liu,Houfang Lu,Bin Liang

In this study, lignosulfonate is converted to hierarchical carbon materials via templating methods, which are used as supports of molybdenum carbide catalysts for Kraft lignin decomposition to aromatic monomers. The results show that hierarchical carbon materials with micropores, mesopores of about 8 nm, and macropores of about 400 nm are obtained from calcium and sodium lignosulfonates using coupled SiO 2 +F127 templates with high ash-free carbon yields of about 50 %. The F127 template tends to assemble on SiO 2 surface along with radial direction to form ordered meso-/macroporous structure of the carbon materials. The β-Mo 2 C supported on the hierarchical carbon material exhibits high catalytic performance with aromatic yield of 0.586 g/g Kraft lignin, and the BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) components and BTX-derived alcohols donate 21 % and 32 % of the aromatics, respectively. The mesopores benefit the accessibility of lignin fragments to active sites and interconnection between macropores, and the macropores enhance the impregnation of highly-dispersed nano β-Mo 2 C particles into pore structures. The hierarchical carbon materials from pulping waste lignin shows potential for macromolecular lignin decomposition.

Nickel nanoparticles inlaid in lignin-derived carbon as high effective catalyst for lignin depolymerization

Da Wang,Guangci Li,Chuanhui Zhang,Zhong Wang,Xuebing Li

Ni nanoparticles inlaid in lignin-derived carbon constructing the “inlaid type” Ni/C-I was reported to improve stability and adjust metal-support interaction of lignin hydrogenolysis catalyst. The Ni/C-I was further heat treated in air to prepare Ni/C-R so as to re-expose the blocked active sites by carbon species. A lot of characterization techniques were carried out to confirm the “inlaid structure” of the catalysts. The lignin depolymerization results demonstrated that the Ni/C-R had better catalytic performance than traditional “supported type” Ni/C, 23.3% aromatic monomer yield and 82.4% bio-oil yield were achieved. Moreover, the mechanism studies with lignin model compound revealed that Ni/C-R had better bond breaking ability than Ni/C, even C C bond could be cleaved. The electron effect could be responsible for that, since the electrons could transfer from Ni 0 to carbon support for Ni/C-R, which could improve the bond breaking ability.

Study on lignin amination for lignin/SiO2 nano-hybrids towards sustainable natural rubber composites

Jiabao Qiu,Shuai Yuan,Honggang Xiao,Jinfu Liu,Tao Shen,Zhuotao Tan,Wei Zhuang,Hanjie Ying,Ming Li,Chenjie Zhu

Lignin-based hybrid fillers are of increasing importance with regards to the valorization of low-value biomass and the requirement of sustainability in rubber industry, however, a facile lignin modification approach tuning the supramolecular interactions to favor the assembly of the hybrids is in demand. This study aimed to design a lignin/SiO 2 nano-hybrid via an in-situ assembly of diethylamine grafted lignin (DL) and SiO 2 , and investigate its reinforcing effect on natural rubber (NR). DL was prepared through Mannich modification of lignin, and the grafted diethylamine can be clearly identified by FTIR, NMR and elemental analysis. The resultant hybrid (DLSi) displays as homogeneous nanospheres with well integrated DL and SiO 2 components as shown in the TEM images, and the hybrid (DLSi1) prepared with weight ratio of DL/SiO 2  = 1/2 shows a minimum particle size of 101.8 nm and significantly reduced polarity. Compared to the reference composite filled only with carbon black (CB), NR composites filled with DLSi/CB of 10/40 phr shows comparable mechanical properties and reduced rolling resistance, which is due to the low particle size, homogenous dispersion and strong rubber-filler interfacial affinity. Such remarkable performance suggests that the DLSi hybrid can be a promising versatile biobased filler for the application in gasoline-saving “green” tires.

Utilization of lignin upon successive fractionation and esterification in polylactic acid (PLA)/lignin biocomposite

Yin Yan,Lihe Zhang,Xi Zhao,Siyu Zhai,Qian Wang,Cui Li,Xu Zhang

The study presents the preparation of novel biocomposites based on different lignin fractions and polylactic acid (PLA). Based on the improvement of PLA mechanical properties, we proposed a process to assemble a series of lignin samples and PLA matrix using melt blending to investigate the effects on PLA properties from the perspective of the structure and molecular weight for lignin. The lignin was extracted from pine residue using deep eutectic solvent (DES) and was subjected to fractionation with ethanol and acetone as well as esterification modification with succinic anhydride (SAn). The treated lignin samples were used as additives, which not only improved the mechanical properties of PLA on the basis of retaining its thermal stability , but also granted excellent antimicrobial and biocompatibility properties. The results showed that the molecular weight of lignin was negatively correlated with the phenolic hydroxyl content, and the mechanical properties of the composites were also significantly affected by different molecular weights of lignin, indicating that the inhomogeneity of lignin affects its value-added utilization. The enhanced mechanical properties, antibacterial effect, and steady biocompatibility provide potential possibilities for lignin-based composites in biomedical applications.

Structural evolution of lignin after selective oxidation of lignin-carbohydrate complex by chlorine dioxide

Jinwei Zhao,Jinzhi Han,Zhaoxia Chen,Xin Wang,Xuan Ye,Haoyang Li,Shuangquan Yao,Shuangfei Wang,Chengrong Qin,Chen Liang

Lignin–carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) are important from the perspective of the anti-depolymerization barrier of lignocellulosic biomass, as it limits the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass resources. In this study, the unit structure of lignin in the LCC has been investigated in depth. Oxidation of a selective lignin unit by chlorine dioxide revealed that the LCC structures are enriched with xylanase-macroporous resins, and the structure that was not oxidized in LCC was also identified. At a chlorine dioxide concentration of 90.93 mg/L, 1 g of LCC lignin is oxidized by 0.7 g chlorine dioxide. The purified residual hemicellulose lignin was mainly H-type. The β-O-4′ signal was the strongest for the bond between lignin and carbohydrates. Therefore, it is speculated that most of the residual lignin in bamboo-alkali hemicellulose exists in the form of non-phenolic structural units. This study provides a reference for further studies on the specific structures of LCC.

Efficient Lignin Depolymerization Process for Phenolic Products with Lignin-Based Catalysts and Mixed Solvents

Yun Wu,Qi Dang,Tong Wu,Taoning Lei,Kaige Wang,Zhongyang Luo

Due to their diverse functional groups and structural composition, carbon-based catalysts exhibit superior performance in various catalytic reaction systems, such as hydrogenolysis, hydrogenation, and oxidation. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of lignin liquid-phase depolymerization by applying the designed lignin-based carbon catalysts to produce aromatic chemicals. A series of Ni–Mo bimetallic carbon-based catalysts were synthesized to explore the effect of different preparation methods on the catalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the embedded Ni–Mo/C-WMO catalyst with multi-active sites of Ni, MoO3, and Mo2C results in a prominent catalytic effect on lignin depolymerization. The Ni–Mo/C-WMO catalyst can achieve a lignin conversion of 87.62% with a 42.25% monophenol yield in the methanol and water system. With the synergistic contribution of multiple active sites of the catalyst and the mixed-solvent system (water, methanol, and 1, 4-dioxane), a remarkably high yield of 62.95% of mono-phenolic compound was achieved at 260 °C and 3 MPa N2 with a reaction time of 4 h. The selectivity of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol in liquid products was 40.85 and 36.42%, respectively. Vanillin, a typical product from lignin depolymerization reported in the literature, was further degraded to monophenol in this system. The outcomes also confirmed that the in situ hydrogen production system of methanol and water coupled with 1,4-dioxane facilitated the lignin depolymerization significantly.

Multi-scale utilization of lignin: A catalytic hydrogenation strategy based on catechyl lignin nanoparticles

Xingjie Guo,Ya Ma,Zuzhi Li,Qian Jiang,Zhicheng Jiang,Bi Shi

With an abundance of oxygen-containing groups on the hydrophilic shell of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), this biomaterial can serve as a catalytic support to adsorb and load metals. Herein, catechyl lignin oligomers from castor seed coats ( Cas ) were extracted via solvothermal pretreatment and prepared as LNPs using the solvent shifting method. Pd 2+ ions were then stabilized and reduced in situ on the surface of LNPs, which were further utilized for the catalyzed hydrogenation of lignin-derived aldehydes. Due to the homogeneous building units and linear linkages, the lignin oligomers from Cas exhibited superior self-assembly capacity with a lower π-π interaction energy than those from conventional lignocelluloses, resulting in a high yield of LNPs with a smooth surface. The high content of phenolic hydroxyl groups in catechyl-dominant LNPs resulted in efficient Pd 2+ ions adsorption via chemisorption of monomolecular layer and a partial reduction of the Pd 2+ ions into metallic states. In addition, the Cas- derived Pd/LNPs exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of lignin-derived aldehydes with high selectivity to alcohols under mild conditions. This could be attributed to the interaction preference of the reaction substrate according to the construction of LNPs: strong hydrogen bond between the aldehyde group of the substrate and the hydrophilic shell of LNPs, as well as the hindered π-π interactions between the benzene ring of the substrate and the hidden hydrophobic core of LNPs. This study, therefore, successfully employed lignin with a broad range of molecular weights from oligomers to monomers, paving the way for a comprehensive lignin biorefining industry.

Pickering emulsion stabilized by lignin particles: Influence of oil phase, lignin concentration, and particle size

Pang Yuxia,Luo Yingdong,Li Zhiping,Luo Yanling,Lou Hongming,Zhou Mingsong

Pickering emulsion stabilized by lignin particles has many advantages such as high flexibility, natural non-toxicity, anti-oxidation, and anti-ultraviolet. In order to promote the application of industrial lignin in the field of Pickering emulsions, this study has done comparatively systematic and basic research on Pickering emulsions stabilized by lignin particles. The emulsification effects of lignin particles on cyclohexane and n-decanol which have opposite polarity were compared firstly under different oil-water ratios. It was found that stable emulsions formed when the three-phase contact angle of oil/water/lignin was closer to 90°. The weakly polar cyclohexane could be well-emulsified by lignin particles, while the strong polar n-decanol could not. Cyclohexane was used as the oil phase to discuss the emulsification ability of lignin particles under different concentrations or with different particle sizes. The results show increasing the concentration of lignin particles or reducing the particle size can improve the emulsification performance.

Enhancing the electrochemical performance of lignin based supercapacitors via covalent modification of lignin side chains

Zhong Dai,Sheng Li,Xinquan Shen,Lei Yao,Lei Pu,Yuchun Li

Covalent modification of lignin side-chain notable enhances its thermodynamic properties. • ALC-4 features a denser structure and a higher graphitization degree compared to counterparts. • Achieves a significant reduction in Rs, accompanied by superior electrochemical performance. • This work expands the application potential of lignin-derived carbon materials in electrodes. Lignin, a low-cost, renewable biomass with high carbon content, shows great promise for electrode materials, yet its side chains tend to cleave and volatilize during thermal treatment, causing structural defects that reduce the graphitization degree of derived carbon and limit electrochemical performance. Herein, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) is used as a covalent modifier to cross-link lignin side chains via a polyurethane reaction; subsequent carbonization and activation yield lignin-based carbon materials with high graphitization and superior electrochemical properties. Multiscale characterizations confirm IPDI effectively introduces polyurethane groups, increases molecular weight, and enhances thermal stability by cross-linking lignin side chains. The modified lignin-derived carbon (ALC-4) exhibits a denser surface, more developed graphitic domains, and higher graphitization degree than the unmodified counterpart (ALC-1). Electrochemical tests show ALC-4 has ∼1.6 times lower equivalent series resistance and ∼6.5 times higher specific capacitance than ALC-1. The ALC-4//ALC-4 symmetric supercapacitors delivers 137.74 mF cm −2 specific capacitance, 19.13 mWh cm −2 energy density at 50 mW cm −2 power density, and retains over 90% capacitance after 10000 cycles, providing a promising strategy for high-performance lignin-based electrodes. Formation of Homogeneous Lignin Nanoparticles from Industrial Kraft Lignin via Fractionation Combined with Antisolvent Precipitation

Zhongshan Wang,Changgeng Li,Xiaodi Liu,Wenchao Jia,Lingzhi Huang,Lu Wu,Haiqiang Shi

Processing lignin into nanoparticles (LNPs) offers a promising utilization strategy; however, its structural and molecular weight heterogeneity poses challenges in the formation of uniform LNPs. In this study, industrial kraft lignin was fractionated in stepwise molecular weight (Mw) from low to high and from which LNPs were fabricated via antisolvent precipitation. The results showed that lignin with high Mw benefits the formation of uniform and smaller-sized LNPs. Particularly, the lignin fraction with Mw of 2016 g·mol–1 fails to form LNPs. The main mechanism is that the higher content of hydrophilic groups (mainly phenolic hydroxyl groups) on the lower molecular weight lignin hinders the formation of LNPs. This hypothesis is supported by the successful formation of homogeneous LNPs after low molecular weight lignin acetylation. Fractionation effectively reduces lignin heterogeneity and promotes the formation of LNPs, which would favor the chemical reactivity and properties, enhancing the utilization of industrial lignin.

Insights into lignin bioconversion: lignin-derived compounds treatment of a novel marine fungus K-2

Wenxian Liu,Liting Xu,Haina Cheng,Zhu Chen,Hongbo Zhou,Yuguang Wang

BACKGROUND The potential for the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass has been extensively explored to produce a wide range of bioproducts. Many approaches have been sought for the deep conversion of lignin to generate products that are toxin-free and beneficial for processing into high-value-added components. RESULTS This study reported a fungus isolated from the deep sea with strong synthesis of multiple lignocellulases, conversion of lignin and guaiacol (0.1%) by 71.6% and 86.1% within 9 days at 30 °C respectively, and outstanding environmental adaptability (20–50 °C and pH 3–8). Metabolic pathway profiling showed that this fungus utilized lignin to rapidly activate multiple ring-opening reactions including the 2,3- and 3,4-cleavage pathways, with the 2,3-cleavage pathway predominating after 5 days. Conversion of metabolic intermediates confirmed the superb potential of this strain for lignin treatment. Meanwhile, its shikimic acid pathway was metabolically active under lignin. CONCLUSION This further expands the potential to produce valuable bioproducts during lignin treatment, especially under ambient conditions, which can significantly enhance high-value precursor compound production. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
