Nonproductive adsorption of cellulase is widely considered as the major roadblock to enzymatically hydrolyzing lignocellulosic biomass. Cationic additives present a promising avenue for mitigating the issue by effectively obstructing cellulase adsorption onto the lignin surface through enhanced electrostatic interactions with the negatively charged lignin, in contrast to nonionic additives. However, excessive positive charges carried by ionic additives can potentially hamper enzyme activity. To reconcile the dilemma, we synthesized a copolymer featuring modulatable cationic content via control over the ratio of nonionic and cationic units within the polymer backbone. Upon addition of 1.0 g/L of the resultant cationic copolymer, a notable enhancement in glucose release from 39 to 88% was observed, even at a low cellulase dosage of 5 FPU/g glucan. Remarkably, these cationic copolymers exhibit versatile applicability across diverse enzyme preparations, acid-treated lignocellulosic substrates, and highly solid saccharification systems. Furthermore, an enzyme saving of up to 80% was achieved. Mechanistic studies illuminated that this copolymer can not only attenuate the occurrence of irreversible binding between lignin and cellulase but also exert a favorable influence on enzyme activity. The adaptability of the copolymer’s cationic content endows it with the status of a promising and effective lignin-blocking additive, holding considerable potential for advancing the economic feasibility of biofuel production.

Nanocelluloses have attracted much attention in both academic and industrial fields. However, nanocelluloses, including cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers, are generally produced by a “top-down” strategy with tedious violent chemical reactions and energy-intensive mechanical treatments. Fabrication of nanocellulose via facile and green approaches with a low cost is always challenging and promising. The digestion of grass by ruminants resembles the extraction processing of nanocelluloses from plants. Herein, lignocellulose nanoparticles (LCNPs) were extracted from cattle dung via facile filtration and centrifugation separation methods, indicating that LCNPs occurred naturally in cattle dung and were formed during digestion of grass. LCNPs are mainly composed of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose and possess an average diameter of ∼50 nm, high surface charge of −36.2 mV, and outstanding water dispersity. LCNPs show excellent Pickering emulsifying ability just as classic nanocellulose due to their partial wettability with both oil and water phases. LCNP stabilized Pickering emulsions were then employed as templates to prepare phase change material (PCM) microcapsules with melamine-formaldehyde shells to prevent leakage of PCM. The obtained PCM microcapsules display good thermal stability, durability, high PCM core content of 88.9% and phase change enthalpy of 214.3 J g–1, and are promising for thermal energy storage and temperature regulation applications. This study provides a sustainable approach to extract nanocellulose as Pickering emulsifier and will facilitate the high-value-added utilization of cattle dung.

In this study, the pineapple peel treated with different degrees of delignification was used to isolate lignocellulose nanocrystals (LCNC) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Controlling delignification treatments can adjust the morphology and structure of pineapple peel and the retention of lignin, thereby achieving the regulation of the properties of LCNC, such as morphology, crystallinity, hydrophobicity and rheological properties. The results of atomic force microscope (AFM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), UV/visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of lignin in LCNC, showing a rod-like structure with the distribution of lignin. Regulating delignification of pineapple peel can adjust the average length (310 ∼ 460 nm), diameter (19 ∼ 38 nm), crystallinity (61% ∼ 71%) and hydrophobicity (contact angle 84° ∼ 60°) of the obtained LCNC by acid hydrolysis, and influence the performance of its stabilized Pickering emulsions. This work confirms that the properties of LCNC can be controlled through adjusting delignification degree, possessing great significance for the high value utilization of lignocellulosic agricultural waste.

Abstract Lignocellulose hydrogels (LCGs) with varying lignin content were prepared by the dissolution–regeneration process using N -methylmorpholine- N -oxide solvent system. The varying lignin content in LCGs can lead to different aggregation states due to the hydrophobic association of lignin, with an important impact on the micromorphology and pore structure of hydrogel. The presence of lignin is beneficial for the mechanical improvement of LCGs when lignin content is lower than 6.5%. LCGs with 6.5% lignin exhibits better viscoelasticity (580.0 kPa), compressive modulus (55.0 kPa), and a more homogeneous structure than others. The LCGs with a lignin content of 11.6% exhibit the best adsorption property (86.1 mg g −1 for Pb 2+ and 69.3 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ ), which is dominated by chemisorption and multiple diffusion mechanisms. The work provides a feasible route for lignin-containing hydrogel production and develops a method for tailoring micromorphology and the physical properties of the hydrogel by controlling lignin content. The effects of long-chain fatty alcohols (LFAs) on the enzymatic hydrolysis of crystalline cellulose by two commercial Trichoderma reesei cellulase cocktails (CTec2 and Celluclast 1.5L) were studied. It was found that n -butanol inhibited the enzymatic hydrolysis, but n -octanol, n -decanol and n -dodecanol had strong enhancement on enzymatic hydrolysis of crystalline cellulose in the buffer pH range from 4.0 to 6.0. LFAs can increase the hydrolysis efficiency of crystalline cellulose from 37 to 57 % at Celluclast 1.5L loading of ten filter paper units (FPU)/g glucan. LFAs have similar enhancement on the enzymatic hydrolysis of crystalline cellulose mixed with lignin or xylan. The enhancement of LFAs increased with the decrease of the crystallinity index. LFAs not only enhanced the high-solid enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose, but also improved the rheological properties of high-solid lignocellulosic slurries by decreasing the yield stress and complex viscosity. Meanwhile, LFAs can improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellobiose to glucose, especially at low cellulase loading.

A new route for the selective synthesis of renewable 1,3-cyclopentanediol was developed by the aqueous phase rearrangement of furfuryl alcohol to 4-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone followed by hydrogenation. The presence of a small amount of base catalysts is beneficial for the aqueous phase rearrangement of furfuryl alcohol to 4-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone. Such a promotion effect of base catalysts can be rationalized by restraining the generation of levulinic acid which may catalyze the polymerization of furfuryl alcohol. In the hydrogenation of 4-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone to 1,3-cyclopentanediol, an evident solvent effect was noticed. Higher carbon yields of 1,3-cyclopentanediol were obtained when tetrahydrofuran was used as the solvent. In the large scale tests with high initial concentrations of feedstocks, a high overall carbon yield (72.0%) of 1,3-cyclopentanediol was achieved over cheap catalysts (MgAl-HT and RANEY® Ni). As a potential application, 1,3-cyclopentanediol as obtained was successfully used as a monomer in the synthesis of polyurethane.

Oleaginous yeast Trichosporon cutaneum is robust to high levels of lignocellulose derived inhibitor compounds with considerable lipid accumulation capacity. The potential of lipid accumulation of T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 was investigated using corn stover hydrolysates with varying sugar and inhibitor concentrations. Biodiesel was synthesized using the extracted lipid and the product satisfied the ASTM standards. Among the typical inhibitors, T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 is relatively sensitive to furfural and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, but strongly tolerant to high titers of formic acid, acetic acid, levulinic acid, HMF, vanillin, and syringaldehyde. It is capable of complete degradation of formic acid, acetic acid, vanillin and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Finally, the inhibitor degradation pathways of T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 were constructed based on the newly sequenced whole genome information and the experimental results. The study provided the first insight to the inhibitor degradation of T. cutaneum and demonstrated the potentials of lipid production from lignocellulose.

The lignocellulosic pretreatment via deep eutectic solvents (DES) can be intensified by microwave heating (MH), but the intensification mechanism is still ambiguous. Hence, this study compared the pretreatment performance between MH and conventional heating (CH), and microwave intensification mechanism was disclosed by reaction kinetic study. The experimental results showed significant increase of pretreatment performance under MH compared to CH for different temperatures. Based on the shrinking core model, DES diffusion was the rate-controlling step for the initial stage of biomass dissolution, but surface chemical reaction dominated the subsequent stage. Benefitting from effective biomass deconstruction under microwave field (verified by SEM), the energy barrier for DES diffusion was reduced and the collision frequency between biomass components and DES was increased, so greater rate constants of DES diffusion and chemical reaction stages in MH-assisted pretreatment were obtained. Finally, the operating conditions of MH- and CH-assisted pretreatment were optimized by response surface methodology.

Here, we developed a new strategy for preparation of series of in-situ reduction bimetallic catalysts Ni-W/SiO 2 by introducing of reducing agent in the preparation process. And these catalysts were applied into the catalytic hydrogenolysis of microcrystalline cellulose and pretreated lignocellulose. The results show that the in situ reduction 15%Ni–20%W/SiO 2 shows the prominent activity for microcrystalline cellulose conversion into ethylene glycol (EG), 1,2-propylene glycol, and glycerol with the highest yield of EG at 61.30% under the experimental condition. And the relative high of EG yield (30.23%) was obtained when a combinative pretreatment technology of steam explosion (0.45 MPa) coupled with hot alkali (70 °C) was introduced to enhance the hydrogenolysis of plant lignocellulose-based feedstocks over the in situ reduction catalyst 15%Ni–20%W/SiO 2 . The SEM and thermogravimetry analysis revealed that segmental lignin and hemicellulose were removed partly by hot alkali pretreatment. Meanwhile, the existence of Ni–W alloys and metal Ni particles were evidenced by X-ray diffraction spectra. In addition, by the detailed analysis via transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the catalytic particle size was distributed in the range of 9.3 ± 1.3 nm.

Employing lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNF) with natural, high specific mechanical performance and abundant functional groups to design a hydrogel as a drug-sustained release carrier, which conforms to the concept of green and sustainable development. Herein, we facilely extracted carboxylated lignocellulose nanofibrils (CLCNF) from bagasse via a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and mechanical defibrillation-based strategy. The CLCNF was crosslinked with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to obtain a nanocomposite hydrogel (PVA/CLCNF/B) whereupon the mechanical strength and drug release behavior were improved in the process. Consequently, the lignocellulose nanocomposite hydrogel presented a high compression modulus (3.92 MPa) and significant sustained-release effect with a release rate of 80.73 % after 336 h. The delivery behavior of the PVA/CLCNF/B composite hydrogel could be controlled by acidic pH conditions. The TH release kinetics of PVA/CLCNF/B hydrogel in different phosphate buffer saline (PBS) followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model better, and the release of TH occurred through the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Importantly, in vivo experiments and histopathological studies showed that TH-loaded PVA/CLCNF/B hydrogel had a superior pro-healing rate. Overall, the incorporation of CLCNF into a hydrogel may have considerable potential as a drug delivery carrier for drug release and therapy. Synopsis Adding the CLCNF from bagasse into PVA dispersions obtained a hydrogel for pH-responsive drug delivery can accelerate wound healing .

The rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the slow electron transfer rate at the catalyst-solution interface seriously limit hydrogen production from α-cellulose photoreforming. Herein, a sulfur-vacancy-enriched ZnIn 2 S 4 (S VH -ZIS) photocatalyst was prepared, and Pt nanoclusters were grown on its surface by in situ photodeposition. Sulfur vacancies coupling Pt nanoclusters optimize the electron transport channel and realize efficient electron migration from α-cellulose to H + through the photocatalyst. The construction of sulfur vacancies promoted the formation of ·OH and enhanced the adsorption and activation of glucose, which significantly improved the oxidation of α-cellulose and accelerated the oxidation kinetics of α-cellulose. Meanwhile, the sulfur vacancies promote the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and broaden the absorption wavelength range of light. Pt clusters provide hydrogen evolution reaction sites and achieve spatial separation of oxidation and reduction reaction sites. As a result, the hydrogen yield of α-cellulose photoreforming catalyzed by 0.25 % Pt/S VH -ZIS reached 522.76 μmol/g/h, which was 6.02 times that of 0.25 % Pt/S VL -ZIS (sulfur-vacancy-poor ZIS) and significantly higher than that of most previously reported photocatalysts.

The massive discharged of kenaf degumming wastewater posed severe environmental challenges due to its high solid waste content (more than 90% parenchyma cells (PCs) and a small number of fiber cells), yet current treatment strategies primarily focus on reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD) while neglecting the valorization of these solids. To address this gap, this study proposed a sustainable approach to repurpose PCs (abundant yet underutilized sheet structure lignocellulosic solid waste) into high-strength lignocellulose film. A hierarchical physical screening method was developed to isolate PCs from wastewater, followed by high pressure solid-liquid separation and filtration equipment to fabricate lignocellulose film. The natural sheet morphology of PCs (50–500 μm length and 25–250 μm width) facilitated dense brick-layer stacking, enabling exceptional dry strength (27.4 MPa) and modulus (4.84 GPa). Notably, the PCs film retained 30.28% dry strength (7.51 MPa) under wet conditions, outperforming conventional paper (14.32% retention). Further modification via nano-silica (NS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) enhanced interfacial interactions through hydrogen bonding and Si-O-C/Si-O-Si covalent grafting, achieving a tensile strength of 49.44 MPa (increase by 40%) and modulus of 6.72 GPa (increase by 39%). Thermal stability analysis revealed a maximum decomposition temperature of 354.41 °C, attributable to the synergistic effects of NS inorganic reinforcement and GPTMS crosslinking. Comparative evaluations against 8 commercial papers demonstrated excellent mechanical properties. This work pioneered the conversion of solid waste from kenaf degumming waste into functional cellulose films, offering a dual solution for pollution mitigation and sustainable material innovation in packaging.
