Herein, SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite (STC) photocatalysts were prepared through placing SiO 2 microspheres in TiOSO 4 solution and calcining at high temperature. Using STC (containing only 5.09 wt% TiO 2 ), the degradation rate to MO with a concentration of 10 ppm was 100% at 50 min of UV illumination. The cost of the photocatalyst and the cleanliness of the preparation process were ensured due to the use of TiOSO 4 as the titanium source and the water as the solvent. Therefore, not only the photocatalytic effect and application performance of TiO 2 were improved, but realized the cleanliness of the preparation process and reduced the cost.

Carbon-based adsorption and TiO 2 -based photocatalysis are both safe and low-cost ways of pollutant purification. Constructing C-TiO 2 architectures can effectively improve removal efficiency. However, most of those carbon frames only acted as supporting substrates, exhibiting rather limited synergistic action from TiO 2 and carbon. Herein, Fe/N co-doped nano-TiO 2 wrapped on mesoporous carbon spheres with a core-shell structure was designed. The Fe, N co-doped carbon sphere with a hierarchical structure improved the synergy of adsorption and transfer during the photocatalytic process. Without extra dopant, the Fe and N partly exposed on the surface realized the in-situ migrating into the TiO 2 shell to enhance the interface effect, which significantly promoted the photocatalytic efficiency of the composite. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency of the composite was investigated through two typical pollutants under visible-light irradiation. The degradation efficiencies for rhodamine B and paraxylene were 96.2% in 60 min and 94.1% in 20 min, respectively, with the apparent rate constant of 0.045 min –1 and 0.049 min –1 , 8.3 and 11.4 times of that for bare TiO 2 . The composite is likely advantageous for treating diverse environmental pollutants.

It has been a blind spot to compare the modification effect of ester and acid on inorganic photo catalysts. Traditional method is always laborious to realize organic-inorganic combination by the esterification of carboxylic acids with surficial hydroxyls of nano-TiO 2 . Here, a detailed comparison was conducted using m -dipyridyl benzene skeleton (MPB) molecules containing ester or carboxylic acid groups to modify TiO 2 surface with solvothermal method . The result shows that the modification did not affect the crystal structure of TiO 2 , but formed uniformly distributed organic/inorganic binding sites and non-binding sites on its surface, thus the intrinsic UV response activity of TiO 2 can be retained. Combining with the visible light activity of organic/inorganic binding sites, a perfect photogenerated charge transfer system with matching energy levels is constructed, hence the photocatalytic performance is greatly improved. By contrast, the ester derivative of MPB (shorted as EPB) is easier to form stable organic species on the surface of nanoparticles and shows higher catalytic activity than the carboxylic acid derivative of MPB (shorted as APB), thus the study first demonstrated that the low cost and applicable photocatalyst can be obtained with much low dosage of organic modifiers containing ester groups, hence much significant in the design and optimization of catalyst surface. Compared with other reported methods, this modification has the advantages of simple process, low cost, no consumption of precious metals , ease of obtaining high activive and stable catalysts, so it is more prospective in waste water treatment.

The intrinsic brittleness has significantly restricted practical applications of epoxy resins. Existing toughening strategies often lead to degraded mechanical strength . Hence, it has been attractive but a huge challenge to design high-performance sustainable additives that can simultaneously improve strength and toughness of epoxy resins. Here, we report the synthesis of a nano-TiO 2 /regenerate cellulose (RC) biohybrid via a facile microwave method for strengthening and toughening a soft epoxy resin system (modulus below 1 GPa). Our results show that with 10 phr nano-TiO 2 /RC, the resultant epoxy composite exhibits simultaneous enhancements in tensile strength and impact toughness , ca. 38% and 40% higher than corresponding values of virgin epoxy resin because of improved interfacial compatibility. Moreover, the addition of as-designed nano-TiO 2 /RC can enhance thermostability of epoxy resin. It has a slightly negative effect on the curing reaction but does not change the curing mechanism of epoxy resins. This study provides a facile, efficient and green method for preparing bifunctional additive for creating strong and tough epoxy composites, which are expected to find wider applications in industries.

Nano-TiO2 is a type of environment-friendly and inexpensive substance that could be used for photocatalytic degradation processes. In this study, the multi-type carbon species doped and modified anatase nano-TiO2 was innovatively synthesized and developed to overcome the deficiency of common nano-TiO2 photocatalysts. The multi-type carbon species were derived from tetrabutyl titanate and ethanol as the internal and external carbon sources, respectively. Meanwhile, diverse characterization methods were applied to investigate the morphology and surface properties of the photocatalyst. Finally, the visible-light photocatalytic degradation activity of the collected samples was evaluated by using methyl orange as a model pollutant. The promotion mechanism of multi-type carbon species in the photocatalytic process was also discussed and reported. The results in this work show that the doping and modification of multi-type carbon species successfully narrows the bandgap of nano-TiO2 to expand the light absorption range, reduces the valence band position to improve the oxidation ability of photogenerated holes, and promotes the separation of photogenerated charge carriers to improve quantum efficiency. In addition, the further modification of the external carbon source can promote the surface adsorption of MO and stabilize the multi-type carbon species on the surface of nano-TiO2.

We report a brand new recycling route of waste marble powder, by means of surface modification with homemade nano-TiO2 particles to produce low cost coating materials for the application in air quality improvement. The as-prepared nano-TiO2 in anatase phase exhibits excellent photocatalytic characteristic, reflected by the high degradation rate of over 95% of methylene blue within 6 hours of UV irradiation. The prepared coating consisting of nano-TiO2 clad marble powder was tested by monitoring the decomposition rate of formaldehyde gas. A high degradation efficiency of about 95% within 9 hours of illumination is achieved, demonstrating a promising potential for removing the harmful and toxic organic pollutants in air while applying this coating in buildings both interiorly and exteriorly.

Rock wool, as an external wall insulation material, is crucial in improving the energy efficiency of structures. However, a large amount of rock wool furnace slag (RWFS) generated during the production of rock wool panels manufacturing causes environmental problems. To address these issues, this study focuses on the use of waste RWFS as a precursor in alkali-activated cementitious materials. In addition, the effect of anatase nano-TiO 2 (ANT) and rutile nano-TiO 2 (RNT) as an additive to the alkali-activated rock wool furnace slag cementitious materials (AARWFSCMs) was evaluated and quantified. Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), Isothermal Conduction Calorimetry (ICC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to identify the effects of modulus 1.0–1.8 water glass modulus (Ms; SiO 2 /Na 2 O), 3%–7% Na 2 O content on AARWFSCMs. Experimental tests was conducted to quantify the properties such as the setting time, the fluidity, the compressive strength of AARWFSCMs after hardening. Results found that the optimal content of Ms, Na 2 O content in preparing AARWFSCM were 1.4, 5 % for obtaining 28-d compressive strength of 96.36 MPa. The atomic percentage of Ca/Si of the hydration products in the AARWFSCMs fluctuated within 0.94–1.50. The hydration products were a mixture of C–S–H and C–A–S–H. Moreover, the experimental results illustrated that the nano-TiO 2 , which highly beneficial in improving the compressive strength of AARWFSCMs. The additions of 0.50 % ANT and 0.75 % RNT resulted in increments of 5.9 % and 12.8 % in the 28-d compressive strength of AARWFSCMs, respectively. The obtained results provide a new method of utilization of RWFS and improving the sustainability of the construction industry.

Common techniques for creating novel coatings include chemically modifying inorganic fillers and exploring how modifications affect coating service performance. However, it frequently takes a lot of time and tedious attempts to get the ideal alteration degree for fillers. Although the surface energy of the fillers is thought to be a significant thermodynamic parameter , it is still unknown how chemical modification affects surface energy and how the properties of fillers in a coating relate to the quantization difference of thermodynamic parameters. In this study, the impact of chemical modification on the quantization difference of nano-TiO 2 surface energy has been uncovered. Creating a “wetting-reagglomeration-adsorption” isogram by utilizing three surface interfacial parameters has also been achieved: the contact angle between the liquid resin and the filler, the driving energy of the filler reagglomeration, and the polymer molecules' diffusion energy at the filler/coating interface. The relationship between the quantitative difference of thermodynamic parameters and the dispersion, compatibility and interfacial strength of the fillers in the waterborne epoxy was predicted by the isocontour map. From the isocontour map, the modified nano-TiO 2 fillers with 4.04 APTES molecules/nm 2 shows the minimum ∆ W a of 16.17 mJ/m 2 and the maximum W s of 23.15 mJ/m 2 in the composite coating , which is predicted to exhibit the best dispersibility and the strongest interfacial strength. The prediction results were successfully verified by the techniques of microscopic morphology observation (TEM and SEM), mechanical properties tests (DMA and tensile tests), and corrosion resistance tests (EIS and salt spray tests). This work has a significant guiding role in the development of the filler modifications for the creation of novel coatings.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are promising materials for membrane separation because their special rigid and contorted structures contribute to high permeability. However, their chain rearrangement to fill excessive free volume makes the permeability stability a tough challenge. In this work, we report on a new use of rutile nano-TiO 2 to mitigate the physical aging of PIM-1 (a typical PIM) nanofilms for stable permeability by mixing matrix. It was shown that the PIM-1 membrane incorporated with nano-TiO 2 displayed remarkably higher aging resistance with a lower swelling degree in long-term ethanol soaking, having more stable ethanol permeance with only a 5% decrease after 35 days, lower than 25% of the pure one. The mechanism of anti-aging was revealed by molecular simulation, thermal, tensile mechanical, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that nano-TiO 2 had good compatibility with PIM-1 due to strong coordination interaction, making its uniform dispersion in polymer. Additional solvent permeation channels were also created to increase solvent permeance without compromising solute rejection. Due to the reliable interaction of nano-TiO 2 , which makes particles serve as physical crosslinking points, the movement of PIM-1 chains was limited partially to mitigate aging, enabling PIM-1-based membranes to have robust solvent permeation. To overcome the performance bottleneck caused by the single-structure optimization of TiO 2 -based anode materials and to explore a new approach for the resource utilization of agricultural waste, this study synthesized nano-TiO 2 particles (TiO 2 -NP) via a co-precipitation and hydrothermal method. Porous carbon spheres (CSHC) were prepared using discarded corn stalk pith as a carbon source through a hydrothermal carbonization and high-temperature calcination coupling process. Subsequently, TiO 2 -NP was in situ grown onto CSHC, forming a nano-TiO 2 /corn stalk pith carbon sphere composite material (TiO 2 -NP/CSHC), thereby achieving the synergistic enhancement of nano-TiO 2 and biomass-derived carbon. This design not only alleviates the agglomeration of TiO 2 but also significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of the composite material via a three-dimensional conductive carbon network. The prepared TiO 2 -NP/CSHC exhibits a high specific surface area of 101.2 m 2 g −1 and a well-developed porous structure, delivering excellent lithium and sodium storage performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). At a current density of 0.2C, after 100 cycles, the discharge specific capacities were maintained at 1182.5 mA h g −1 and 675.3 mA h g −1 , respectively. Through the structural and functional synergy of TiO 2 -NP and CSHC, the composite material simultaneously achieves high capacity, long cycling stability, and fast charge/discharge capability, while also offering environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

In this study, the corrosion environment in the evaporation stage of alumina production by the Bayer process was simulated, and TiO2-MMT/EP composite coating was prepared on the surface of Q235 steel. Montmorillonite (MMT) was functionalized via cation exchange and surface grafting using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550), enabling the introduction of organic groups onto the MMT surface and intercalation into its interlayer spacing. After compounding with titanium dioxide, the interlayer spacing of MMT was enlarged (from 1.27 to 2.13 nm) and its hydrophobicity was enhanced (contact angle from 48.14° to 105.6°). TiO2-MMT was added to epoxy resin (EP) to prepare a composite coating with multidimensional synergistic effect. The results show that the composite material can effectively fill the EP microhole defects, and the surface roughness of the coating is only 1.7 nm (pure EP is 65.5 nm). Electrochemical tests reveal that the corrosion current density (Icorr) was 1.126 × 10–5 A·cm–2, the protection efficiency was 98.40%, and the charge transfer resistance (Rct) reached 696.1 Ω·cm2, indicating that the coating effectively prolonged the diffusion pathways of corrosive ions through.

High-temperature corrosion is a major factor contributing to the degradation of industrial components, and composite coatings are one of the effective solutions to this issue. To solve this problem, we design an innovative strategy that utilizes thiol–ene click chemistry to graft nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) onto graphene oxide (GO), forming a composite coating with methyl phenyl silicone resin. This method significantly enhances the thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and self-cleaning properties of the coating. Detailed characterization using SEM, TEM, FTIR, and XRD confirmed the successful covalent bonding of TiO2 with GO, resulting in a composite coating with excellent structural stability. The modification markedly enhances the dispersion and interfacial compatibility of GO-TiO2 within the silicone resin matrix, leading to superior mechanical integrity. Electrochemical analysis reveals that GO-TiO2 extends corrosion pathways and reduces ion permeation, significantly boosting the corrosion resistance of the resin. Notably, the incorporation of just 0.2 wt% GO-TiO2 results in a significant enhancement of the coating thermal stability and its resistance to degradation in high-temperature corrosive environments, while also imparting superior self-cleaning properties. This efficient grafting method offers a transformative framework for developing next-generation nanocomposite coatings with heightened resilience for extreme operational settings.
