In this study, a novel covalent-assisted seeding method is developed to fabricate well-intergrown ZIF-8 membrane on polyimide (PI) substrate with imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde (ICA) as the covalent agent between ZIF-8 layer and PI substrate. Compared to ethylenediamine-crosslinked PI membrane and ZIF-8/PI membrane synthesized without covalent-assisted seeding method, ZIF-8/PI membrane synthesized with ICA covalent-assisted seeding method shows improved pervaporation performance for isopropanol dehydration. Subsequent surface coating with polydimethylsiloxane or polydopamine is applied to mitigate the grain boundary of ZIF-8/PI membrane, which results in a further performance enhancement. The morphologies and physicochemical properties of the resultant membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscope, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and water contact angle. The effect of operation temperature on the separation performance is also carried out. This work demonstrates the novel covalent-assisted seeding method for the preparation of ZIF-8 membrane with high-performance, which may hold a great potential for various ZIF membranes separation applications.

To synthesize small and evenly distributed fillers in polymer matrix is important to fulfill the advantage of nanocomposite membranes in overcoming the tradeoff effect between permeability and selectivity. In this study, nanocomposite membranes were prepared by synthesizing calcium oxalate (CaOx) nanoparticles in confined space of the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembled polymer network through bio-inspired mineralization. The active layer was tightly coated on hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile substrate with thickness less than 200 nm. The CaOx nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix with diameter less than 50 nm. The hydrophilicity of the nanocomposite membranes was decreased due to the incorporation of CaOx nanoparticles. And the free volume properties were tuned by creating new polymer/filler interface. At precursor concentration of 1 mM, the permeation flux increased by 14% to 958 g/(m 2 h), the separation factor increased by 2.36 times to 1562 compared to the control membrane, and the membrane showed good operating stability.

Ethanediamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 particles (ZIF-8-NH 2 ) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF-8-NH 2 loading in the MMMs is studied and the MMM with a 7.5 wt % ZIF-8-NH 2 loading shows the best pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration at 40°C. Various characterization techniques (Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, sorption test, etc.) are used to investigate the MMMs loaded with ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-NH 2 particles. The impact of operation conditions on pervaporation performance is also performed. The performance benchmarking shows that the MMMs have superior separation factors and comparable flux to most other PVA hybrid membranes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 62: 1728–1739, 2016

In recent years, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has received tremendous attention due to its hydrophobic inner channels and good compatibility with the polymer as an inorganic filler for preparation of the mixed matrix membrane (MMM). In this study, ZIF-8 particles were synthesized and incorporated into Ploy (ether block amide) matrix (PEBA-2533) to fabricate a MMM for the enhancement of phenol permselective pervaporation. The structure and morphology of ZIF-8 particle and the obtained MMMs were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, contact angle and BET. It is found that the hydrophobicity of the membrane was enhanced by the incorporation of hydrophobic ZIF-8, and the obtained MMM withstand the extreme operation conditions of pervaporation. The effects of particle loading amount, feed concentration and temperature on the separation performance of ZIF-8 incorporated MMMs were investigated in details. Compared with the pure PEBA-2533 membrane, the permeate flux of ZIF-8 incorporated PEBA-2533 MMM with a 10 wt% loading amount was significantly increased from 846 g m −2 h −1 to 1310 g m −2 h −1 , while the separation factor increased from 39 to 53 at 70 °C with 8000 ppm feed phenol concentration. The enhancement of the pervaporation performance could be mainly attributed to the preferential highly permeable regions of the bimodal membrane structure for phenol molecules, which was consisted of ZIF-8 particles. Finally, both of the excellent overall membrane pervaporation performance and the long-term revealed that such a ZIF-8 incorporated MMM has a great potential in separation and recovery of phenol from its aqueous solution for a practical process.

In this contribution, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-7)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with uniformly dispersed ZIF-7 were fabricated. The homogeneous dispersion of ZIF-7 nanoparticles in PDMS matrix and better interface compatibility were characterized by SEM and EDS. PV performance reveals that the MMMs display increased total flux and the highest separation factor occurs at 20 wt% ZIF-7 loading, which were 1689 g m −2 h −1 and 66 respectively as compared to 1080 g m −2 h −1 and 51 for pure PDMS membrane when separating 1 wt% butanol aqueous solution at 60 °C. The total flux reaches 3496 g m −2 h −1 with 80 wt% butanol in permeate for the enrichment of 5 wt% butanol solution at 60 °C. The enhanced flux may result from enlarged free volume in the polymer matrix caused by the incorporation of ZIF-7 nanoparticles. Moreover, the super-hydrophobic ZIF-7 pore channels and butanol preferential permeation may contribute to the improvement of separation factor. The result also shows that there is a 21.1% reduction of energy barrier for penetrant transportation for 20 wt% ZIF-7 filled PDMS membrane as compared to pristine PDMS membrane. A long period of pervaporation experiment was also carried out to investigate the structure stability of the ZIF-7/PDMS membrane, and the MMM remains intact during the 240 h continuous operation, which is the key to industrial application for membrane-based separation process. All above indicated that ZIF-7 is a good filler to fabricate butanol permselective pervaporation membranes for butanol separation and enrichment.

Polyamide pervaporation membranes, with excellent stability and resist swelling at high temperatures, enable superior capacity for high-salinity solutions compared to other pervaporation membranes. However, the low permeate flux impedes their technical realization for large-scale applications. Here, we prepared a pervaporation membrane based on a 5-sulfinyl amino isophthaloyl dichloride (NSO) monomer. NSO contains a sulfinamide group, which can be used as an acid-binding agent to combine with H + to promote the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction, thus inhibiting the growth of the polyamide layer and leading to the formation of a thinner separation layer. In addition, the sulfinamide group is converted to an amino group during the IP process, which can continue to participate in the IP reaction and further enhance the cross-linking degree of the separation layer. The resulting ultrathin and highly crosslinked polyamide pervaporation membranes show exceptional performance in pervaporation desalination, achieving a pervaporation flux of 50.54 kg m −2 h −1 and a rejection of 99.99% when measured with 3.5 wt% NaCl solution as feed. NSO monomer presents a promising pathway to overcome the limitations of pervaporation desalination membranes, advancing the application potential of polyamide membranes for practical high-salt wastewater treatment.

A solvent-free photopolymerization method was employed to fabricate pervaporation membranes to separate polar/non-polar organic solvent mixtures. Commercially available monomers bis[2-(3,4-epoxy cyclohexyl)ethyl] tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDG) and 3,3'-(Oxybis(methylene))bis(3-ethyloxetane) (DOX), along with a photo-initiator, were mixed and spin-coated onto the PVDF membranes surface, followed by UV-curing to form polyether-polysiloxane coatings. This approach eliminates the use of organic solvents, offering a simple, efficient, and cost-effective process with significant economic and environmental benefits. Precise control over the coating structure and polarity was achieved by adjusting the monomer ratios. Among these composite membranes, M3 demonstrated excellent permeability and separation efficacy for the pervaporation of polar/non-polar mixed organic solvents. At 45 °C, the flux of M3 to acetone/n-hexane (5 wt %/95 wt %) and methanol/n-hexane (5 wt %/95 wt %) were 615 and 559 g m −2 h −1 , respectively, and the separation factors were 836 and 798, respectively. Moreover, M3 also exhibited an excellent separation effect on acetone / n-hexane azeotropes (59 wt % / 41 wt %, 49.8 °C), with a flux of 1806 g m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 121. Ultimately, M3 maintained stable permeability and separation performance for acetone/n-hexane (5 wt %/95 wt %) throughout 168 h, demonstrating the outstanding chemical stability of the coating prepared by UV-curing.

Pervaporation (PV) is characterised by good hydrophilicity and antifouling properties. However, it is still unavoidable to need cleaning during long-term operation. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a commonly used purifying agent for organic pollutants , but it may cause damage to the polymer membrane. In this study, a grafting method was proposed to enhance the chlorine resistance and water permeability of membrane composite polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) pervaporation membrane. Modified PVA (SPVA) was prepared by grafting 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) to improve the hydrophilicity of the membrane using the sulfonic acid group on SSA. SPVA-FA/PTFE composite membranes were prepared by using perfluoroglutaric acid (PFGA) as crosslinking agent to improve the chlorine resistance of the membranes by utilising the C-F chain contained therein. The water flux was 120.38 ± 1.72 kg/(m 2 ·h), which was 84.2 % higher than that before grafting, when tested at 70 °C and 3.5 wt% NaCl. The chlorine resistance of SPVA-PFGA/PTFE composite membrane was tested in 2000 ppm (pH = 12) NaClO solution for 480 h, and the salt rejection remained above 99.93 %. When desalinating 20 wt% NaCl at 70 °C, the water flux of SPVA-PFGA/PTFE membrane is 51.95 ± 0.6 kg/(m 2 ·h), which has the potential to treat high concentration brine.

Efficient xylene isomers’ separation remains a challenge due to their similar kinetic diameter and boiling points, particularly for the separation of the immediate size of meta-xylene (MX). A metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane offers the opportunity to realize the isomers’ separation due to the highly tunable pore size and pore environment. Herein, an In-based hierarchic MOF (MIL-100) with a size of 0.77 nm was screened, aiming at the realization for isomer separation through pore size matching. Meanwhile, the polar microenvironment in the MOF channel built through trimesic acid ligands contributes to the higher affinity to the MX relative to the PX. With the equimolar feed mixture of MX/PX, the optimal membrane demonstrated a total flux of 7.6 kg·m−2·h−1and an MX/PX separation factor of 2.54 at room temperature through pervaporation. Such performance highly indicates the possibility for efficient liquid xylene separation in future.

Pharmaceutical crystallization wastewater typically contains high concentrations of valuable active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and organic antisolvent. The current approach to treating this wastewater stream, while effective for environmentally benign disposal, could be further developed to enhance its resource recovery potential. Herein, pervaporation crystallization (PVCr) and the specific membrane were developed to simultaneously achieve the organic solvent recovery and induced crystal nucleation. The fabricated membrane, owing to its superior intrinsic hydrophilicity, significantly reduces the critical nucleation energy barrier and creates high local supersaturation via preferential water permeation. With the ideal nucleation condition on the membrane surface, effective ethanol enrichment provided a gentle driving force for crystal growth, leading to high-quality, non-agglomerated single crystals ( d = 1.42 μm, CV = 24.45%) with a 94% yield at 30°C and 1 atm. These fine crystals are ideal for direct seeding into the traditional crystallizer. Recovered high-purity ethanol and water streams are suitable as antisolvent and solvent in the production section, respectively. According to process simulation results, PVCr reduced operating costs by 60.7%, thereby improving environmental performance by avoiding the energy-intensive separation process of repeatedly vaporizing and condensing the reflux. These results demonstrate that the PVCr assembled with customized functional membrane possesses great potential for treating multi-component organic wastewaters.

With the help of density functional theory calculations, a unique MOF-capped nanotube architecture was initially conceived in this study based on the solution-diffusion mechanism. Then, the novel ZIF-8-capped halloysite nanotubes (ZHNTs) were prepared and incorporated in the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) bulk to achieve the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for n -butanol permselective pervaporation . The remarkable characteristic of this membrane was that the HNT lumen (∼25 nm) in ZHNTs provided the exquisite diffusion highway for the penetrants that were first selected through the capping ZIF-8 layer. Simultaneously, the close connection of ZIF-8 layer on external surface of ZHNTs created the relatively continuous pathways for molecular permeation. As expected, the embedding ZHNTs significantly improved the separation performances of the membranes. Impressively, the as-obtained membrane acquired a high separation factor of 61.3 (58.7% higher than that of PDMS control membrane) with a comparable flux of 683 g m -2 h -1 (2.43-fold as much as that of PDMS control membrane) at 40 °C in the separation of 1 wt% n -butanol aqueous solution. Moreover, the presence of ZHNTs conferred excellent interfacial compatibility, mechanical properties, and good long-term stability on the resultant membranes. This study may shed light on the rational design of high-performance MMMs for biofuels recovery from fermentation broths .

Fabricating ultrathin membranes with high separation performance and stability remains a great challenge. Tannic acid (TA) is a bio-based polyphenol and can form multifunctional coatings through catechol chemistry. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and TA were alternatively deposited on hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) porous membrane via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly driven by covalent interaction between the amine groups of PEI and polyphenols of TA. The LbL assembly process was verified by the step-wise change of water contact angles. The formation of covalent bond was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The free volume property of the membranes was revealed by the Doppler broadening energy spectra. The resultant membranes possessed ultrathin active layers with thicknesses ranging from 118 to 220 nm. When utilized for pervaporation dehydration of 90 wt% ethanol aqueous solution, the membrane exhibited high separation performance with permeation flux of 1343 g/m 2 h and separation factor of 1012 with 5.5 bilayers and pH 8 at 349 K, arising from the increased hydrophilicity and favorable free volume property. Moreover, the membrane showed favorable long-term stability due to the strong interfacial interactions.
