Phytic acid extracted cellulose nanocrystals for designing self-healing and anti-freezing hydrogels’ flexible sensor

Chenglin Yang,Jiarui Liu,Pengxiao Liu,Wenxiang Wang,Hou Chen,Liangjiu Bai,Huawei Yang,Lixia Yang,Donglei Wei

Phytic acid (PA), a naturally occurring organic acid, has been extensively researched in various fields such as flame retardants, electroactive materials, metal coatings and flexible sensors. This study proposes a method for extracting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) utilizing PA and ingeniously applies them to hydrogels, endowing the hydrogels with exceptional mechanical properties, anti-freezing capabilities and high electrical conductivity. First of all, the CNCs@PA and PA were integrated into a multi-component network consisting of hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ), and their complex interactions resulted in the formation of a robust three-dimensional structure. Consequently, the hydrogels formed after just a single freeze–thaw cycle exhibited exceptional mechanical properties (2.6 MPa) and a significant self-healing ability (92.3 %). Moreover, the strategic addition of PA to the hydrogels effectively immobilizes H 2 O, providing anti-freeze properties and enabling the hydrogels to maintain their structure and performance even at −20.0 °C. Notably, following hydrolysis, PA generates a substantial number of hydrogen ions, markedly enhancing the conductivity (2.3 S/m) and a sensitivity gauge factor (GF = 2.5) of the hydrogels. This work offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and scalable method for the manufacturing of nanomaterials, and opens new avenues for creating anti-freeze wearable flexible sensors.

Cellulose–Phytic Acid Hydrogel with Synergistic Mechanical–Electrical Properties and Antifreezing Stability for Information Encryption

Caijin Zeng,Aojue Ke,Xinya Zhang

Cellulose-based hydrogels, owing to their softness, biocompatibility, and ionic conductivity, hold promise for applications in wearable sensing and human–machine interfaces. Herein, we present an effective strategy for synthesizing the PAAP-CMCs-PA hydrogel by incorporating carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and phytic acid (PA), with an optimized balance between mechanical and conductive properties. Strong electrostatic interactions and multiple hydrogen bonds are established within the polymer network, thereby reinforcing structural stability and endowing the hydrogel with excellent integrated properties. As a result, the PAAP-CMCs-0.2 PA hydrogel exhibits high ionic conductivity (7.8 S/m), considerable tensile strength (0.68 MPa), substantial stretchability (1473%), and robust adhesion (10.38 kPa) on diverse substrates. In addition, the hydrogel demonstrates remarkable antifreezing performance at low temperatures and reasonable antibacterial activity. These multifunctional properties endow the hydrogel with stable signal-detection capability for subtle motions, thereby enabling Morse code information transmission, indicating an effective design strategy for flexible sensors in harsh cold conditions.

Phytic acid‑microencapsulated melamine phosphate as additives for flame‑retardant, biocompatible, and antibacterial Lyocell fibers

Xiaoxiao Li,Peng Li,Shengnan Dong,Lijuan Liao,Xiaobo Ye,Xiaohu Wu,Xiang Li,Xiongwei Dong

Lyocell fibers suffer from intrinsic flammability and a persistent trade‑off between flame retardancy and mechanical integrity. Here, a bio‑inspired “core‑shell‑skin” microcapsule architecture is designed. Melamine phosphate (MP) as the flame‑retardant core is coated with a melamine‑formaldehyde (MF) shell, followed by electrostatic assembly of phytic acid (PA) as a functional skin. The resulting PA‑ functionalized microcapsules (PA‑MMP) are blended with Lyocell spinning dope and processed via dry‑jet wet spinning. At 25 wt% loading, the composite fibers achieve a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 30.5%, which remains 29.5% after 50 washing cycles. The tensile strength reaches 88.89 MPa, overcoming the typical strength loss of additive‑modified fibers. The PA‑rich surface mimics extracellular matrix phosphorylated microenvironments, promoting fibroblast adhesion (relative growth rate 98.7%) and providing antibacterial rates of 94.8% ( Staphylococcus aureus ) and 98.6% ( Escherichia coli ). Char residue analysis further revealed that PA‑MMP‑Lyocell formed a denser and more continuous char layer than MMP‑Lyocell. This work offers a scalable, eco‑friendly strategy to produce high‑performance Lyocell fibers with integrated flame retardancy, mechanical robustness, and biological activity. Natural polysaccharide-based injectable hydrogels with tunable mechanical and electrical properties enabled by phytic acid

Zhijie Geng,Cuiping Guo,Daohuan Lu,Shan Yu,Jun Huang

A fully natural polysaccharide-based hydrogel with tunable mechanical and electrical properties was developed by introducing phytic acid (PA) into a dynamic Schiff-base network formed between chitosan (CS) and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA), using a simple and scalable post-treatment strategy. Unlike conventional methods that require complex chemical modifications or synthetic conductive additives, this approach leverages the inherent multifunctionality of PA to simultaneously achieve structural reinforcement and ionic conductivity enhancement through a single, mild, and chemical-free immersion process, representing a significant advancement in hydrogel design. The incorporation of PA significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of the hydrogel (12.6 kPa up to 881.8 kPa), reduced swelling (from 9185.6 ± 127.0 % to 135.2 ± 26.0 %), and improved degradation resistance (mass loss reduced from 93.2 ± 3.1 % to 7.5 ± 0.9 %). Moreover, the presence of dissociated phosphate groups from PA introduced mobile ionic species, leading to increased ionic conductivity and stable strain-responsive electrical signals. The hydrogel also exhibited excellent cytocompatibility, low hemolysis ratios (<5 %), and strong antioxidant activity, particularly at optimized PA concentrations. These enhancements were attributed to PA-mediated multi-point hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, which reinforced the network structure and promoted ionic mobility. This work not only demonstrates an effective strategy for modulating hydrogel properties in a green and scalable manner, but also expands the application potential of natural polysaccharide hydrogels by offering a previously underexplored yet highly efficient route for achieving multifunctionality.

Nacre-biomimetic graphene oxide paper intercalated by phytic acid and its ultrafast fire-alarm application

Gongqing Chen,Bihe Yuan,Yong Wang,Xianfeng Chen,Chuyuan Huang,Sheng Shang,Hongji Tao,Jing Liu,Weikang Sun,Pan Yang,Guibin Shi

A novel nacre-like flame-retardant paper based on graphene oxide (GO), and phytic acid (PTA) is fabricated via evaporation-induced self-assembly. This facile method is time saving and low energy consuming. A facile approach is proposed to improve thermal oxidative stability of GO paper by in situ phosphorus doping during flame exposure. Then fire-alarm system is designed based on the high-temperature thermal reduction characteristic of GO . The GO paper functionalized with PTA (GO-PTA) can provide ultrasensitive, reliable and longtime fire early-warning signal. Fire alarm can be triggered at approximately 0.50 s when GO-PTA samples are attacked by fire. Phosphorus atoms are in situ doped into graphene layers during fire exposure, endowing GO-PTA paper with outstanding thermal oxidative stability, and thus alarm duration time of GO is greatly improved. The work develops advanced fire detection and early-warning sensors that provide reliable and continuous signals, which provide more available time for fire evacuation.

Thermal safety of hydrophobic silica aerogels under controlled incorporation of phytic acid-modified graphene oxide

Wu Xiaoxu,Liu Miao,Hu Min,Chen Zikang,Zhou Fang,Yao Shengjie,Liu Qiong,Li Zhi

With growing demands for flame retardancy and energy saving, increasing attention has been attracted toward the development of flame-retardant hydrophobic silica aerogels (HSAs). In this work, phytic acid-modified graphene oxide (PA-GO) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method and incorporated into silica aerogel matrices to prepare flame-resistant aerogel composites (PA-GO/SA). The introduction of PA-GO substantially improved the thermal stability of the aerogel composites. For instance, the temperature of peak heat flow of PA-GO/SA-0.45% (containing 0.45 wt.% PA-GO) increased to 341.1 °C. Flame-retardant performance analysis revealed a 13.4% reduction in peak of heat release rate of the composite and a 13.8% decrease in gross calorific value relative to those of pure sample. Furthermore, the incorporation of PA-GO had negligible impact on the fundamental physicochemical properties of the aerogels. Specifically, the PA-GO/SA-0.45% maintained low density, with a water contact angle of 141.4° and a low thermal conductivity of 24.1 mW/(m·K). These findings offer a promising strategy for developing multifunctional aerogels for flame-retardant thermal insulation applications.

Phytic Acid and Melamine Self-Assembled Macromolecule-Coated Montmorillonite for Flame-Retardant Polyvinyl Alcohol Film

Dengwang Lai,Mengyao Nan,Hao Wu,Li Liu,Yuhua Li,Yuejun Liu,Jun Yang

A green and bio-based flame retardant, MMT@PAMEL, was synthesized by coating phytic acid (PA) and melamine (MEL) self-assembled macromolecules onto the surface of montmorillonite (MMT) nanosheets. This novel flame retardant was employed to enhance the fire resistance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films. To evaluate its fire performance, several standard tests were conducted, including the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL 94), and cone calorimetry. The findings revealed a substantial enhancement in flame resistance. The LOI value of the PVA/MMT@PAMEL-15 composite film increased significantly from 19% (pure PVA) to 31%, achieving a UL 94 VTM-0 rating. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of the PVA/MMT@PAMEL-5 composite film were reduced to 108.98 kW/m 2 and 2.71 MJ/m 2 , representing reductions of 57.11% and 33.42%, respectively, compared to the pure PVA film. The underlying flame-retardant mechanism was explored through thermogravimetric-infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed that the primary mechanism involved PA decomposition during combustion, which released phosphorus-containing compounds that promoted the esterification of PVA, leading to the formation of char precursors. Additionally, the barrier effect of MMT contributed to the formation of a phosphorus-carbon composite, thereby reinforcing a continuous and compact carbon layer. Simultaneously, MEL released NH 3 and other non-combustible gases, which diluted the concentration of flammable gases and absorbed heat, forming a protective gas layer. These combined mechanisms significantly enhanced the fire resistance of the PVA composite films, providing a sustainable solution for improving fire safety in polymer materials.

Ag nanoparticles-coated cotton fabric for durable antibacterial activity: derived from phytic acid–Ag complex

Haiting Xing,Jiang Cheng,Xinquan Tan,Cailong Zhou,Liguo Fang,Jing Lin

This study focuses on the preparation of functional cotton with high and durable antibacterial activity by in situ formation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) onto cotton fabric derived from phytic acid-Ag complex. The route can be divided into two simple steps, adsorption of silver ions onto cellulose matrix with phytic acid as a capture agent and subsequent reduction of Ag+ to Ag NPs by sodium borohydride. The successful deposition of Ag NPs on cotton fabric was verified by SEM, EDS and XPS. The bacterial reduction rate against E. coli and S. aureus for the as-treated fabrics was above 99%, even after 10 laundry cycles. The phytic acid was found of benefit to distribution and bonding of silver on the cotton fabric, which might lead to the enhancement of antibacterial property and durability against wash. This study may provide a green, novel and simple strategy to manufacture Ag-based antibacterial cotton for potential applications in textile industry.

Mechanically resilient, freeze-resistant, and antibacterial carboxymethyl cellulose/phytic acid hydrogel sensors for respiratory monitoring

Yu Zhao,Ziguang Wang,Yu Wang,Zien Cheng

Hydrogels are promising materials for flexible wearable electronics; however, they often encounter limitations in practical applications due to environmental instability and weak mechanical properties. This study developed a multifunctional composite hydrogel by integrating phytic acid (PA) and hydrophobic lauryl methacrylate (LMA) chains into a polyacrylamide (PAM) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) network, resulting in a synergistic multi-dynamic cross-linked structure. The hydrogel exhibits remarkable tensile strength (1.06 MPa), high ionic conductivity (1.45 S/m), and excellent environmental tolerance, maintaining its flexibility and conductivity even at −20 °C. Additionally, it demonstrates significant anti-swelling properties, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and outstanding cytocompatibility (cell viability >97 %). As a multifunctional sensor, it shows high sensitivity (GF = 2.13), a fast response time, and stable performance over more than 1000 cycles. This hydrogel sensor reliably monitors physiological signals such as electrocardiograms (ECG), electromyograms (EMG), and respiratory patterns, demonstrating particular promise in diagnosing sleep-related breathing abnormalities in patients with heart failure. This study provides a robust and versatile platform for next-generation wearable devices.

Modification of cellulose fibers with phytic acid and its application in flame-retardant paper preparation

Li Min,Shi Xuehui,Tao Furong,Ji Hairui,Ji Xingxiang,Tian Zhongjian,Chen Jiachuan

The flammability of most decorative paper poses a potential fire hazard to buildings. In this study, softwood fibers were modified with phytic acid and urea to obtain phytic acid esterified cellulose (PAEC) with good flame-retardant properties. Due to the introduction of phosphorus and nitrogen elements in PAEC, the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased from 170.9 W/g and 7.6 kJ/g to 104.3 W/g and 4.9 kJ/g, respectively, when compared with raw fibers. Subsequently, PAEC was composited with talc powder, carboxylated nanofibers, and calcium ions to prepare flame retardant paper. The results indicated that the HRR of the 170.9 W/g of the paper was decreased to 47.0 W/g. The network structure formed by the cross-linking between carboxyl groups in nanofibers and Ca 2⁺ enhanced the paper’s mechanical properties. The strength reached 12.18 MPa, which was 1.4 times as high as that of raw paper. Therefore, the prepared flame-retardant paper is expected to provide a candidate for the preparation of decorative paper. Graphical abstract

Sustainable Moisture-Electric Generator Based on Electrospun PVA Membranes with Phytic Acid-Enhanced Proton Conduction

Zhiwei Zhao,Jin Fang,Qingqing Ni,Zhenzhen Xu

Moisture-electric generators (MEGs) can continuously harvest clean electricity from ubiquitous environmental water vapor, making them promising candidates as power sources for next-generation low-power wearable electronics. However, existing MEG devices still face significant challenges in output performance, stability, and environmental adaptability, particularly exhibiting low output voltage and structural instability. To address these challenges, this study presents a high-performance MEG based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid (PVA/PA) composite nanofibers. A three-dimensional cross-linked porous hydrophilic network was fabricated via electrospinning, enabling efficient proton dissociation and excellent electrical output performance. Under 97% relative humidity (RH), a single MEG with an effective area of 2 cm2 delivers a sustained open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.81 V and a short-circuit current (ISC) of 3.1 μA, achieving a peak power output of 0.65 μW. Notably, the device demonstrates excellent structural and operational stability, maintaining high-efficiency power generation for over 7 days, and can completely dissolve in water within about 5 h and fully biodegrade under natural conditions within ∼120 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic PVA/PA system exhibits a strong binding affinity toward water molecules, with a binding energy of −1.602 eV, further supporting its efficient moisture uptake and proton dissociation mechanism. Furthermore, the MEG device can be integrated in series or parallel configurations using multiple units to meet diverse voltage and current requirements. It has been successfully applied to capacitor charging and breath monitoring, demonstrating broad potential for use in self-powered wearable electronic systems.

Influence of phytic acid on the corrosion behavior of iron under acidic and neutral conditions

Xiang Gao,Caicai Zhao,Haifeng Lu,Feng Gao,Houyi Ma

The influence of phytic acid (PA) on the corrosion of iron under acidic and neutral conditions was investigated by means of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curve methods. The electrochemical results indicate that, PA can effectively inhibit the corrosion of iron as a mixed type inhibitor in H 2 SO 4 solution; however, PA tends to react with the dissolved Fe (II) ions, forming stable metal chelate complexes with strong anodic inhibition action on the iron surface, in Na 2 SO 4 solution. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) analysis confirms the existence of PA or its salts on the iron substrates. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic (XPS) characterization demonstrates that PA adsorbs on the iron surface mainly in the form of undissociated molecules under acidic condition, while phytate ions may bind to the iron substrate through connection of C-O-P bond with oxidized iron surface under neutral condition. The great difference in binding mode between PA and the iron substrate makes PA act as either a corrosion inhibitor or a film former under different conditions.
