Tuning the Band Gap of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin Films via Lithium Alloying

Yanchun Yang,Xiaojiao Kang,Lijian Huang,Daocheng Pan

Alkali metal doping plays a crucial role in fabricating high-performance Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 and Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) thin film solar cells. In this study, we report the first experimental observation and characterizations of the alloyed LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films. It is found that Cu+ ions in Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films can be substituted with Li+ ions, forming homogeneous LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.29) alloyed thin films. Consequently, the band gap, conduction band minimum, and valence band maximum of LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films are profoundly affected by Li/Cu ratios. The band alignment at the LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4/CdS interface can be tuned by changing the Li/Cu ratio. We found that the photovoltaic parameters of the LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cell devices are strongly influenced by the Li/Cu ratios. Besides, the lattice constant, carrier concentration, and crystal growth of LixCu2–xZnSn(S,Se)4 thin films were studied in detail.

Sulfonatocalix[4]arene-based light-harvesting amphiphilic supramolecular assemblies for sensing sulfites in cells

Zhixue Liu,Xiaohan Sun,Xianyin Dai,Jingjing Li,Peiyu Li,Yu Liu

Herein, we reported highly efficient light-harvesting amphiphilic supramolecular assemblies based on a tetraphenylethylene derivative (TPE-4Py), an amphiphilic sulfonatocalix[4]arene (SC4A-C6), and a sulfite fluorescent probe (SP). The obtained assemblies not only showed obvious signal amplification compared to SP alone, with an antenna effect of up to 28.1 based on highly efficient energy transfer of 75.2% from TPE-4Py/SC4A-C6 to SP, but also displayed an excellent ratiometric fluorescence signal output toward sulfites. Meanwhile, the assemblies showed no obvious cytotoxicity to A549 cells and could be used to sense sulfites in the cells. This strategy for constructing supramolecular assemblies not only resulted in a high-efficiency light-harvesting platform but also amplified the signal of the probe because of the high antenna effect and thus constitutes an effective method for fabricating fluorescent cell sensors.

ZnAl-Hydrotalcite-Catalyzed Aqueous-Phase Rearrangement of Furfuryl Alcohol to 4-Hydroxycyclopent-2-Enone

Yue Zhao,Ling An,Hui Zhang,Tong Zhang,Xing Zhang,Li Huang,Song Jin,Wei Wang,Ning Li

4-Hydroxycyclopent-2-enone (HCP), a chemical substance with a unique molecular structure and distinct physical properties, is an important intermediate for the synthesis of natural products, chemicals, and liquid fuels, demonstrating exceptionally high application value. This study introduces a novel approach for HCP synthesis via the rearrangement of furfuryl alcohol (FAL). A series of ZnAl-based hydrotalcite (HT) catalysts was prepared and characterized by SEM, XPS, XRD, NH3-TPD, and CO2-TPD. HCP is efficiently synthesized by the rearrangement of furfuryl alcohol in water at a relatively low temperature of 205 °C. Using a 10 wt.% aqueous solution of furfuryl alcohol as the raw material, the yield of HCP remained stable at 80.2% under the selected reaction conditions (ZnAl-HT-1: 1–500 °C as catalyst, 205 °C, and 5 min). It is worth noting that when the concentration of furfuryl alcohol solution was reduced to 5%, the conversion of furfuryl alcohol reached 100%, and the HCP yield reached an excellent 92.5%. The exceptional performance observed can be primarily attributed to several key factors associated with the ZnAl-HT-1: 1–500 °C catalyst: its expansive specific surface area and ample pore volume, the distinctive layered structure inherent to hydrotalcites, and its well-balanced acid–base properties, featuring optimal densities of acid and base sites with a uniform distribution of acidic and basic active centers that cooperate synergistically to promote the reaction.

Dielectric behavior and microwave heating mechanism of poly(4-acetoxystyrene) synthesized through microwave-polymerization

Jia Runan,Pang Xinlei,Jiang Long,Zhu Xiaobao,Hou Ming,Zhang Jialong,Yang Li,Guo Shenghui,Sun Hao,Chen Guangyu

Poly(p-hydroxystyrene) (PHS) serves as a key raw material for synthesizing deep ultraviolet(KrF) photoresist film-forming resins. To address the issues of lengthy preparation times and suboptimal performance associated with conventional heating methods, this study proposes a novel microwave-assisted polymerization process for synthesizing poly(4-acetoxystyrene), the precursor of PHS, thereby achieving efficient synthesis of poly(4-acetoxystyrene). 4-Acetoxystyrene was used as the monomer, benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as the initiator, and toluene as the solvent. To verify the feasibility of microwave polymerization, the dielectric properties of the monomer, solvent, initiator, and their mixed solution were characterized by the resonant cavity perturbation method at 2450 MHz, and the thermal stability of the reaction system was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Polymerization experiments were conducted using a laboratory-built microwave reactor to monitor the temperature profile during reaction. The results showed that all components and the mixed solution exhibited excellent microwave dielectric loss characteristics. Finally, the samples were systematically characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The results confirmed the successful synthesis of poly(4-acetoxystyrene) with a weight-average molecular weight ( M w ) of 23,641 g/mol, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.86, and a monomer conversion of 98.86%. Furthermore, the mechanism of microwave action in the polymerization process was proposed. This study provides important guidance for the industrial preparation of poly(4-acetoxystyrene) and offers new insights into the efficient synthesis of functional polymer resins.

Resetting the redox-immune axis with IL-4-loaded allomelanin nanoparticles for osteoarthritis therapy

Jiaji Yue,Yuhao Deng,Weichao Sun,Shenglong Li,Mengni Zhu,Fangyue Cheng,Zhen Dai,Hongxi Shang,Jinling Zhang,Jianfei Tang

An IL-4-loaded allomelanin nanoparticle (IL-4@AMNPs) is developed. • IL-4@AMNPs scavenge ROS and reprogram macrophages toward M2 phenotype. • The nanoplatform shows sustained intra-articular retention over 144 h. • IL-4@AMNPs alleviate cartilage degradation and inflammation in OA rats. • A synergistic redox-immune modulation strategy for disease-modifying OA therapy. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disorder characterized by chronic synovitis and progressive cartilage destruction, in which excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a central pathogenic role. Herein, we reported the design of allomelanin-like nanoparticles loaded with interleukin-4 (IL-4@AMNPs) as a multifunctional nanoplatform. Benefiting from the intrinsic antioxidant activity of AMNPs, the system efficiently scavenges excessive ROS, while the incorporated IL-4 exerts anti-inflammatory and M2-polarizing effects. In a rat model of OA, intra-articular administration of IL-4@AMNPs markedly attenuated cartilage erosion, reduced ROS accumulation, and downregulated matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) expression. Furthermore, IL-4@AMNPs suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6), restored the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and reprogrammed macrophages from the M1 toward the M2 phenotype, thereby reshaping the joint immune microenvironment. Both in vitro and in vivo safety assessments confirmed the excellent biocompatibility and systemic safety of IL-4@AMNPs. Collectively, this study demonstrated that IL-4@AMNPs disrupt the pathological interplay between oxidative stress and inflammation, achieving synergistic chondroprotection via dual ROS scavenging and IL-4-mediated macrophage reprogramming and offering a promising disease-modifying nanotherapeutic strategy for OA treatment. Acid-Tolerant Photosensitizer: Photodynamic Inactivation of Porphyromonas gingivalis by 2′,4′,5′,7′-Tetraiodofluorescein

Zixiang Wang,Qianwen Deng,Ziyu Huang,Zixing Lin,Haohui Zhu,Janak L. Pathak,Ying Wang,Min Nie

Porphyromonas gingivalis(P. gingivalis) is a primary pathogen in periodontitis, yet its elimination is limited by complex anatomical structures. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising adjunct, but its antimicrobial efficacy is compromised in the acidic microenvironment induced byP. gingivalis. Given that 2′,4′,5′,7′-tetraiodofluorescein (TIF) exhibits robust and stable photodynamic activity under acidic conditions, this study investigated the antibacterial effect of TIF-mediated PDT (TIF-PDT) againstP. gingivalis.P. gingivalisATCC 33277 was treated with TIF (5, 10, 20, and 40 μM), light (525 nm), or both. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was assessed at pH 4.5 or 7.4. Bacterial viability and membrane integrity were evaluated by colony-forming unit (CFU) assay and LIVE/DEAD staining. CFU assays demonstrated that TIF-PDT groups achieved an approximately 4-log reduction in bacterial viability compared to the DEMI, Light, and TIF groups, with no dark cytotoxicity and light-alone effects. LIVE/DEAD staining revealed bright yellow fluorescence in the TIF-PDT (40 μM), indicating membrane damage and significantly lower survival rates than controls. TIF-PDT at 10, 20, and 40 μM produced ROS under both neutral and acidic conditions, exhibited low dark cytotoxicity, and demonstrated potent antibacterial activity againstP. gingivalisin vitro, suggesting its potential as an acid-tolerant photosensitizer for periodontitis adjunctive therapy.

Catalytic effect of AgF on the thermal decomposition and combustion performance of DAP-4

Junlei Song,Meng Li,Zhiran Wang,Yuexin Shao,Binbin Zhang,Hua Fang,Xiong Cao

Molecular perovskite energetic material (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] (DAP-4) is promising for solid propellants; however, its high ignition delay limits practical application. In this work, silver(I) fluoride (AgF) was introduced as a catalyst to prepare DAP-4/AgF composites. Their thermal decomposition and combustion performance were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa isoconversional analysis, combustion testing, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. AgF was uniformly dispersed on DAP-4 particle surfaces. Increasing AgF content progressively lowered the decomposition temperature and reduced the mean apparent activation energy from 295.35 to 119.07 kJ/mol. Combustion performance initially improved and then declined, with DAP-4/AgF-1 showing the strongest response, a combustion heat of 11078 ± 84 kJ/kg, and a strand burning rate of 6.77 mm/s. The combined results are consistent with a possible AgF-associated interface-assisted modification of the overall decomposition process.

LC-MF-4, a Novel FGFR3 Degrader for Therapeutic Intervention in FGFR3-Altered Cancers

Lulu Zheng,Jiaqi Cao,Lin Ma,Shiyan Chen,Xiansheng Cao,Ruixiang Luo,Yuhan Wang,Di Ke,Ping Huang,Guang Liang,Lingfeng Chen

Alterations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene have been noted in human diseases, including bladder cancer and urothelial carcinoma (UC). Erdafitinib was approved for the treatment of UC but is limited by the progression of on-target gatekeeper resistance mutations. Several heterobifunctional FGFR degraders have been developed as potential therapeutic agents to block FGFR1 or FGFR2 signaling. However, to date, none of the FGFR3-active degraders have been identified. Herein, we report the discovery of LC-MF-4, the first efficient FGFR3 degrader, for the treatment of cancers harboring FGFR3 alterations. Proteomic analysis revealed that LC-MF-4 exhibits exceptional proteomic selectivity for FGFR3 degradation. In FGFR3-TACC3 fusion-positive cells, LC-MF-4 exerted its effects by suppressing the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and ATP synthesis. This study demonstrated robust antitumor activity of LC-MF-4 in the Ba/F3-FGFR3-TACC3 xenograft model, highlighting its potential for the treatment of FGFR3-altered cancers.

Molecular Mechanism Analysis of the Activation of Human Olfactory Receptor OR9Q2 by 4-Methylphenol

Fengge Wen,Mengxue Wang,Lili Zhang,Wen Duan,Baoguo Sun,Jianping Xie,Mingquan Huang,Shihao Sun,Rui Yang,Yuyu Zhang

This study employed a combined computational and experimental approach to investigate the molecular recognition mechanism of 4-methylphenol by human olfactory receptor hOR9Q2. The strategy integrated molecular docking using BIOVIA Discovery Studio, structural modeling of hOR9Q2 based on the AlphaFold2-predicted, molecular dynamics simulations with GROMACS software employing the AMBER14SB force field, and systematic site-directed mutagenesis validation. Computational simulations revealed that the binding cavity formed by transmembrane domains TM3, TM5, and TM6 serves as the key interaction region, with van der Waals, hydrophobic, and Pi-sulfur interactions driving stable binding (ΔG = −40.173 ± 0.34 kJ/mol). Functional characterization identified six critical residues (Cys112, Val158, Met207, Phe251, Leu255, and Tyr259) as essential for receptor activation, while mutations at Ile71 and Ala108 resulted in partial functional impairment. This study reveals the structural basis for hOR9Q2’s selective response to 4-methylphenol, while establishing a computational–experimental framework for precisely locating functional sites on olfactory receptors. These findings elucidate the molecular mechanism of odorant recognition and provide insights for developing odorant prediction models and designing specific olfactory receptor modulators.

He Jun,Dou Jianing,Song Wenchao,Song Tao,Chen Jiaqi,Lin Xuan

CeO 2 /chitosan/expanded graphite (CeO 2 /CS/EG) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and used for the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in wastewater. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, XPS and FT-IR. In order to study the catalytic activity of CeO 2 /CS/EG, the catalytic performance of CeO 2 /CS/EG/O 3 system was compared with other reaction systems, and the effects of catalyst dosage, pH, initial 4-CP concentration, O 3 concentration and co-existing ions on the degradation of 4-CP in this system were investigated. The results showed that CeO 2 /CS/EG/O 3 system showed high catalytic activity for 4-CP degradation. Under the optimal conditions (pH > 6.5, catalyst dosage 1.0 g L –1 , initial concentration of 4-CP 100 mg L –1 , ozone concentration 2.5 mg L –1 , reaction time 30 min), the removal rate and mineralization rate of 4-CP reached 99.4% and 70.2%, respectively. This degradation process conformed to first-order reaction kinetics. After five consecutive catalytic cycles, the removal rate of 4-CP was still above 97%, showing the excellent stability and reusability of CeO 2 /CS/EG. The ·OH was identified as the main reactive species causing 4-CP degradation through free radical scavenging experiments. According to the main intermediates measured by the HPLC-MS technique, five possible degradation processes of 4-CP catalytic ozonation were deduced. Graphical abstract CeO 2 /chitosan/expanded graphite (CeO 2 /CS/EG) were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and used for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in wastewater. The results showed that the removal efficiency of 4-CP and total organic carbon (TOC, a key parameter representing the total carbon content in organic compounds that indicates mineralization degree) reached 99.4 and 70.2% under optimal conditions. Besides, OH ⋅ was identified as the main substance causing 4-CP degradation.

OTUB1-SLC7A11 Axis Mediates 4-Octyl Itaconate Protection Against Acetaminophen-Induced Ferroptotic Liver Injury

Ziyun Hu,Yuxin Li,Di Xu,Huihui Meng,Wenya Liu,Qian Xu,Benxing Yao,Junsong Wang

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation, plays a crucial role in acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity. While 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI) demonstrates protective effects against APAP toxicity, its molecular mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Through an innovative integration of untargeted metabolomics and pathway analysis, we unveil a novel dual mechanism by which 4-OI prevents APAP-induced ferroptosis. We discovered that 4-OI stabilizes SLC7A11 through OTUB1-mediated deubiquitination, thereby restoring cystine import and glutathione (GSH) synthesis. In addition, 4-OI activates the Nrf2 pathway, orchestrating a comprehensive antioxidant response by upregulating the key proteins involved in both glutathione metabolism and iron homeostasis, including GPX4, FTH1, FTL1, and FPN1. This coordinated action effectively prevents the accumulation of toxic iron and lipid peroxides. Our findings not only elucidate the protective mechanisms of 4-OI but also establish it as a promising therapeutic candidate for ferroptosis-related diseases through its unique ability to simultaneously modulate the SLC7A11-GPX4 antioxidant axis and iron homeostasis.

A Hydrogen-Free Ni/MgO Catalyst System for Aqueous-Phase Hydrodeoxygenation of 4-Propylguaiacol

Zien Bao,Xiaohong Ren,Xiaoxin Wang,Zeming Rong

This study focuses on the catalytic transformation of a lignin model compound, 4-propylguaiacol, without external hydrogen. The reaction using a Ni/MgO catalyst and water as the solvent, conducted at 220°C under 5 bar N 2 for 2 h, achieved 97.8% conversion and 94.8% selectivity toward phenolic products. During the reaction, the methoxy group in 4-propylguaiacol is cleaved from the aromatic ring at Ni active sites and subsequently reacts with hydrogen radicals generated from water dissociation to form methanol. The methanol then undergoes aqueous-phase reforming, providing additional in-situ hydrogen to drive the hydrodeoxygenation process. The Ni/MgO catalyst showed good recyclability over three consecutive cycles, with only a slight decline in activity. Furthermore, this catalyst was applied to the depolymerization of real lignin, and the effects of reaction parameters on product yield were investigated. Among the tested conditions, a maximum monomer yield of 76.7 wt% was obtained at 280°C under 5 bar N 2 for 6 h. Graphical This work presents a sustainable strategy for producing phenolic monomers from lignin-derived compounds using non-noble metal catalysts without external hydrogen.
