Residues of pyrethroid pesticides in aquatic environments seriously threaten aquatic organisms and the human health. Herein, a novel highly dispersed and recyclable composite ZIF-8 and SiO2 double-layer-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticle, named Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticle, was synthesized via a layer-by-layer assembly method to remove pyrethroid insecticides (namely, fenvalerate, β-cyfluthrin, and tetramethrin) from water. The physical properties of the Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticles were characterized via scanning electron microscopy, elemental mapping, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis, dispersion analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The prepared Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited excellent adsorption performance and high dispersibility and could be rapidly separated from water using an external magnetic field. The Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited the strongest adsorption effect at an adsorbent dosage of 10 mg, an adsorption time of 40 min, and a pH of 7. The fitted model for the adsorption process was consistent with the proposed secondary kinetic model and Sips isotherm model. The Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 316.23, 364.43, and 258.69 mg g–1 for fenvalerate, β-cyfluthrin, and tetramethrin, respectively. The Fe3O4@ZIF-8@SiO2 nanoparticles retained most of their adsorption capacity after five reuse cycles when acetone was used as an eluent for desorption. The mechanisms involved in the adsorption process included π–π stacking interactions, hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and pore filling effects. This study provides a potential design for rapidly recoverable and reusable nanoparticles that can be used to effectively adsorb pyrethroid insecticides in wastewater.

Melanoma is one of the highly malignant tumors whose incidence and fatality rates have been increased year by year. However, in addition to early surgical resection, there still lacks specific targeted drugs and treatment strategies. In this study, it was discovered that hinokiflavone (HF) encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) exhibited a superior anti-melanoma effect in vitro and in vivo. HF was encapsulated in ZIF-8 through a one-step synthesis method, and polyethylene glycol (PEG-2000) was used to optimize the size and dispersion of the drug-loaded complex (PEG/ZIF-8@HF). The results show that the prepared PEG/ZIF-8@HF has a high encapsulation efficiency (92.12%) and can achieve selective drug release in an acidic microenvironment. The results of in vitro anti-melanoma experiments indicate that PEG/ZIF-8@HF shows up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and can restrain the migration and invasion of B16F10 cells. Moreover, in vivo animal experiments further confirm that PEG/ZIF-8@HF shows anti-tumor effect by up-regulating the pro-apoptotic proteins caspase-3 and caspase-8, and down-regulating the migration-promoting invasion protein MMP-9. This study developed a safe and effective oral administration of HF based on the high-efficiency delivery ZIF-8 system, which provides an effective treatment strategy for melanoma.

The trade-off relationship between permeability and selectivity as well as plasticization issues have largely impeded the advancement of membrane technology. Mixed-matrix-membranes (MMMs) with the incorporation of fillers into the polymer matrix is one promising method to deal with these challenges by carefully tuning their chemical properties. Compared with nanoparticles, the counterpart of nanosheet has a larger external surface area with a tendency to have closer contact with a polymer matrix to form a defect-free membrane at higher loading. This work successfully synthesized a high aspect ratio (30/1) of KAUST-8 nanosheets with high CO 2 uptake (60 cm 3 /g). This enables an optimal loading of 30 wt.% in the CO 2 -attractive crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) membrane and results in the simultaneously enhanced CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity with 280 % and 30 % up, respectively in the mixed gas permeation measurements (50/50 vol.). The resultant membrane performance surpassed the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Meanwhile, the stabilized MMM performance of up to 6 bar and high thermal stability of up to 350 °C bring extra benefits to the KAUST-8-based XLPEO membrane for post-combustion flue gas treatment.

Graphical Can I have some pumpkin soup, please? In the host–guest complexes formed between cucurbit[8]uril and the alkyl-substituted 4-pyrrolidinopyridinium salts 4-(C 4 H 8 N)C 5 H 5 NRBr (R=Et, n -butyl, n -pentyl, n -dodecyl), the orientation of the guest molecule changes with the length of R. Solid state structures are different to those observed in solution, and for R= n -pentyl, there are two different interactions between Q[8] and the guest. The interaction between cucuribit[8]uril (Q[8]) and a series of 4-pyrrolidinopyridinium salts bearing aliphatic substituents at the pyridinium nitrogen, namely 4-(C 4 H 8 N)C 5 H 5 NRBr, where R=Et (g1), n -butyl (g2), n -pentyl (g3), n -hexyl (g4), n -octyl (g5), n -dodecyl (g6), has been studied in aqueous solution by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and mass spectrometry. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the structure of the host–guest complexes for g1, g2, g3, and g5. In each case, the Q[8] contains two guest molecules in a centrosymmetric dimer. The orientation of the guest molecule changes as the alkyl chain increases in length. Interestingly, in the solid state, the inclusion complexes identified are different from those observed in solution, and furthermore, in the case of g3, Q[8] exhibits two different interactions with the guest. In solution, the length of the alkyl chain plays a significant role in determining the type of host–guest interaction present.

A hybrid and hierarchical nanocomposite was successfully prepared by the growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on the template of ionic liquid (IL, [Bmim][BF4]) functionalized reduced graphene oxide (IL-RGO). The structure and morphology of the IL-RGO/ZIF-8 nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that RGO sheets were refrained from restacking by IL, and ZIF-8 nanoparticles grew well on the surface of IL-RGO. Owing to the synergistic effect from large surface area and excellent electrocatalytic activity of ZIF-8 and great electrical conductivity of IL-RGO, a highly sensitive sensor for dopamine (DA) can be obtained. IL-RGO/ZIF-8-modified electrode exhibits good electrocatalytic activity and electroconductive properties towards DA which were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with bare or IL-RGO-modified electrodes, the IL-RGO/ZIF-8-modified electrode effectively depressed the oxidation overpotential of DA. The linear response range of DA was from to with a low detection of limit . In addition, the sensor was shown to provide satisfactory stability for the determination of DA.

To improve electron transport rate of perovskite solar cells, a ZIF-8-derived porous carbon skeleton layer is prepared by carbonizing the ZIF-8 thin film on conducting glass as the electron transport skeleton of a perovskite solar cell. Polyvinylpyrrolidone is added during the synthesis of ZIF-8 to reduce the particle size of ZIF-8 and decrease the carbonization temperature below 600 °C. The porous structure of ZIF-8 is mainly reserved at the optimized carbonization temperature. Then, TiO2 nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of a porous carbon skeleton to form an electron transport layer of a perovskite solar cell with the structure of FTO/ZIF-8-derived porous carbon layer/TiO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/Au. Because of the good conductivity of the ZIF-8-derived porous carbon skeleton, the photogenerated electron transport rate of the perovskite solar cell is increased. At the same time, the porous structure of the ZIF-8-derived carbon layer increases the contact area between the perovskite layer and the TiO2 layer to favor separation of photogenerated charges. Therefore, the light-to-electric conversion efficiency of the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cell is enhanced from 14.25% to 17.32%.

A novel and highly efficient photocatalyst of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S@ZIF-8 nanocomposite has been developed by a facile self-assembly strategy. This is the first report on the application of Cd x Zn 1−x S and metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite as photocatalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI). The resulting Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S@ZIF-8 exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of pristine Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S and ZIF-8. Particularly, the CZS@Z60 composite with 60 wt% of ZIF-8 exhibited a photocatalytic activity that is about 1.6 times as high as that of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S. The dominant reason for the improved photocatalytic reduction potential is proved to be the newly-formed interfacial S Zn bonds that firmly connect Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S and ZIF-8 and substantially improve the separation efficiency of photo-excited electrons and holes. The newly-formed chemical bonds are confirmed by XPS analyses, and the prolonged lifetime of photo-excited electrons is evidenced by the electrochemical measurement of photocurrent, which shows that the photocurrent on Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S@ZIF-8 is much higher than that of Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S and ZIF-8. This study clearly demonstrates that the MOF-based composite nanomaterials hold great promises for applications in the field of environmental remediation and for design of novel photocatalytic materials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are being intensively investigated for the design of advanced composite membranes , primarily due to their favorable polymer affinity, and highly tunable porous structure and surface properties. However, the development of engineered MOF-based ultrafiltration (UF) membranes for water treatment remains in its infancy. In the present study, hydrophilic hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (hZIF-8) was meticulously synthesized via surface functionalization-assisted etching approach by using tannic acid (TA), and then incorporated into polysulfone (PSf) casting solution to fabricate novel hybrid UF membranes via phase inversion method. The resultant hZIF-8 not only possessed a highly hydrophilic surface derived from the coated TA but also yielded a unique hollow structure without destroying the intrinsic frameworks. Thanks to the well-tailored surface property and nanostructure of hZIF-8, the obtained PSf/hZIF hybrid UF membranes showed highly improved water permeation (597 L m −2 h −1 ), which was 2.8 times that of the pristine PSf membrane (210 L m −2 h −1 ), while well maintaining the rejection property. What's more, the incorporation of hZIF-8 rendered the membrane with enhanced resistance to fouling. These results indicated the great application potential of such MOF/polymer hybrid UF membranes in wastewater treatment and separation in many industrial fields.

The nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids were synthesized and blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by solution method. The effect of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids on the crystallization was investigated by DSC and POM. The results showed that low addition amount of nano-ZIF-8@GO had a significant influence on the crystallization behavior of PLA. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLA/ZIF-8@GO nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% of ZIF-8@GO were increased to 49.63 MPa and 24.10% compared with 35.83 MPa and 17.66% of the pure PLA, respectively. The addition of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids also enhanced the flame retardancy of PLA, and the mechanism was proposed.

Rational construction of profitable microstructure in carbon-based electromagnetic composites is becoming a promising strategy to reinforce their microwave absorption performance. Herein, a N-doped highly porous carbon composite derived from thermal decomposition of Zn-based MOF (ZIF-8) has been synthesized for microwave absorption applications. The maximum reflection loss (RL) of −39.7 dB could be achieved with a thickness of 4 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth was from 7.9 GHz to 12.2 GHz covered X band (8–12 GHz). By comparing the porous carbon composites derived from conventional ZIF-8, it can be validated that porous structure, degree of graphitization and graphitic-N level is the key factors to improve the microwave absorption performance by increasing dielectric loss ability. The results demonstrated that the ZIF-8 derived graphitized nitrogen-doped porous carbon composites had great potential for microwave absorption performance, which may open up a new avenue to promote the electromagnetic applications of MOF-derived carbon composites.

The hybrid nanocomposites ZIF@L composed of Zn-based MOFs (ZIF-8) and lignin were successfully synthesized via a simple one-step method at room temperature. The yield of the hybrid nanocomposites ZIF@L were up to 52% and the synthesis time was greatly shortened. Characterization using FT-IR, XRD, SEM and N 2 -sorption analysis indicated that ZIF@L composites exhibited rhombic dodecahedral structure such as the parent ZIF-8 synthesized in the absence of lignin and the incorporation of lignin did not destroy the framework integrity of ZIF-8. The ZIF@L composites were used to remove methyl violet (MV). The ZIF@L nanocomposites had a remarkable improvement in adsorption capacity of MV compared with the parent ZIF-8. The modified Langmuir model fitted better the equilibrium data of MV adsorption on the ZIF@L-4 composite and the maximum adsorption capacity of MV is 1001.2 mg g −1 . The pseudo-second-order model could describe well the kinetics process of MV dye onto the prepared adsorbents.

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO 2 /N 2 separation were prepared by incorporating nickel-substituted ZIF-8 (Zn/Ni-ZIF-8) into a polyether-block-amide (PEBA2533) polymer, in which the Zn and Ni ions in Zn/Ni-ZIF-8 have different affinities for CO 2 based on π-complexation; these MMMs exhibited exceptional molecular sieving properties compared to ZIF-8-PEBA MMMs. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that Zn/Ni-ZIF-8 nanoparticles were small and uniformly distributed within the PEBA, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed good interfacial compatibility between the Zn/Ni-ZIF-8 and PEBA; consequently these MMMs exhibited excellent mechanical properties . The 10% Zn/Ni-ZIF-8-PEBA MMM showed a high CO 2 permeability of 321 Barrer, and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 42.8 at 2 bar; these values were much higher than those of the 10% ZIF-8-PEBA MMM (266 Barrer and 33.8, respectively). We assume that different metal-ion affinities towards CO 2 resulted in the asymmetric adsorption/desorption behaviour of these MMMs, which led to a significantly higher permselectivity for the Zn/Ni-ZIF-8-PEBA MMM. The MMM loaded with 10% Zn/Ni-ZIF-8 exhibited long-term CO 2 -separation-performance stability under mixed-gas conditions, with a CO 2 permeability of 282 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 42.7. Moreover, the permselectivity of the 10% Zn/Ni-ZIF-8-PEBA MMM under pure-gas condition surpassed Robeson's upper bound reported in 2008.
