Epoxy-based materials are widely utilized in electrical and electronic equipment due to their favorable insulation and mechanical properties. However, high-voltage stress and compact design in these apparatuses impose strict requirements for higher dielectric strength. In this work, a novel promising nanofiller, namely, nano-diodes of molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ), was introduced to enhance the electrical properties of epoxy, and five groups of MoS 2 -doped epoxy composites with varying concentrations were prepared. A series of electrical insulation properties, including dielectric parameters, breakdown strength, and trap characteristics, were tested. The results indicated that the breakdown strength of the composite with 0.3% MoS 2 increased by 34.93% compared to pure epoxy resin. In addition, the insulation performance of the composite materials showed an initially increasing and then decreasing trend with MoS 2 concentration. The enhancement of insulation properties can be attributed to the charge traps introduced by the MoS 2 fillers. The results proved that the comprehensive performances of EP-based nanocomposites were effectively improved by MoS 2 nanoparticles, showing great application potential in high-voltage insulated power equipment.

Vinyl ester resin (VER) is highly flammable, which limits its use in applications requiring high flame resistance. However, conventional flame-retardant approaches often degrade its mechanical properties. To improve both the flame retardancy and mechanical performance, this work developed a grafting strategy incorporating phosphorus-containing flexible side chains. Three DOPO-based diol derivatives with different chain lengths (DOPE, DOPB, and DOPH) were synthesized and then grafted onto the VER backbone through 4,4′-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to obtain VER/M-DOPx systems. The modified resins showed obvious improvements in both flame retardancy and mechanical properties. VER/M-DOPE and VER/M-DOPB achieved UL-94V-0 ratings, with LOI values of 28.6% and 26.7%, respectively, while VER/M-DOPH reached a V-1 rating and an LOI of 28.9%. VER/M-DOPB showed the best flame-retardant effect, reducing the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) by 68.5% and 43.7% compared with VER. The incorporation of flexible DOPO-based diol chains also enhanced toughness and strength; VER/M-DOPE exhibited increases of 4.53%, 26.24%, and 81.35% in tensile, flexural, and impact strengths, respectively. These results indicate the feasibility of enhancing both the flame retardancy and the mechanical properties of VER through grafting phosphorus-containing flexible side chains.

Dye wastewater encounters environmental challenges due to its complex composition, which often includes toxic and non-biodegradable compounds such as dyes. These problems force us to find efficient and sustainable treatment methods. Among existing technologies, the adsorption method was popular for its operational simplicity, low cost, and environmental safety. Hydrogels adsorbents have gained attention due to their tunable 3D networks. These networks can be functionally customized through cross-linking strategies. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were exfoliated with ionic liquids (ILs) and inserted into a sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel matrix, named as pAAM/pAA/LMA/SA/ILs-MWCNTs (PLS) adsorbent. This hydrogel was used to remove cationic (Methylene Blue, MB) and anionic dyes (Methyl Orange, MO). We used pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models for kinetics and isotherms, respectively. The adsorption was mainly driven by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and π–π stacking. Cyclic adsorption tests showed that PLS had good reusability, and its strong mechanical properties kept it structurally stable over repeated cycles. This sustainably synthesized hydrogel combines mechanical strength with high adsorption performance. It provides an economical, efficient, and durable approach for industrial wastewater treatment.

Frictional energy dissipation accounts for ~30% of global primary energy consumption, highlighting the critical need for superlubricating materials (COF < 0.01). We previously reported that solid-oil hybrid lubrication using epoxy resin coatings enables superlubrication with different viscous oils. However, the effect of chemical structure of the epoxy resin coatings on the solid-oil hybrid lubrication behavior remains unclear. This study investigates the influence of chemical structure of the coatings which is induced by annealing treatments at different temperature on their solid-oil hybrid superlubrication performance. The results show that the mechanical properties, crosslinking structure and chemical composition of the epoxy resin coating were significantly changed by heat treatment. Under the lubrication of nonpolar oil (150 N mineral oil), the epoxy resin coating treated at high temperature (> 300°C) fail to achieve superlubrication. This failure is attributed to two primary factors. On the one hand, the coating undergoes thermal degradation, the number of polar functional groups such as hydroxyl and epoxy groups decreases, and it is difficult to form surface hydroxylation at the friction interface. On the other hand, the degree of curing is strengthened, which inhibits the formation of EP transfer layer on the surface of the grinding ball.

Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for wearable flexible sensors; however, integrating ultra-high mechanical properties, high sensitivity, and a broad sensing range into a single material remains challenging. Herein, an ultra-strong and tough polyvinyl alcohol/nano-carbon black/polyacrylamide (PVA/CB/PAM) conductive composite hydrogel is fabricated via a multi-reinforcement strategy, which employs nano-carbon black as both a reinforcing agent and conductive filler. The synergy from constructing a double network, nano-carbon black filling, freeze–thaw crystallization, and dehydration-induced contraction endows the hydrogel with outstanding mechanical properties: a tensile strength of 16.06 ± 0.9 MPa, a Young's modulus of 6.33 ± 0.87 MPa, an elongation at break of 610% ± 77%, and a toughness of 46.84 ± 5.21 MJ m −3 . The derived sensor achieves a high gauge factor of 3.81 with low hysteresis over a wide strain range of 0%–600%, and exhibits excellent durability over 500 loading-unloading cycles. It reliably monitors a full spectrum of human activities, from subtle throat movements to high-impact running. This work presents a promising candidate material for high-performance wearable sensors.

In this study, an epoxy addition approach was used to modify isophorone diamine (IPDA). By adjusting the molar ratio of epoxy groups to IPDA, the effects of the modification level on the mechanical properties, gelation kinetics, strength, and optical transmittance of the thermosetting system were examined. The results show that the optical properties of the thermosetting system, including transmittance, haze, and yellowness index, improve as the modification level increases. While tensile strength slightly declines, impact strength and elongation at break increase significantly. Among the tested formulations, the ER2 thermal-curing system, with a 22% modification level, demonstrated the best overall performance, extending the storage lifetime from 24 to 288 h. Its impact strength and elongation at break increased by 67.4% and 94.0%, respectively, compared to the unmodified system. Additionally, the ER2-based photo–thermal dual-curing system, combined with a light-curable acrylic resin, achieved complete curing under a single light exposure without secondary heating. This system exhibited notably lower volume shrinkage and yellowness index than the single-cure acrylic resin, offering an efficient and energy-saving solution for high-reliability optical encapsulation applications.

Melt electrospinning has attracted interest as an efficient technology with industrial potential. However, challenges such as low efficiency and insufficient fiber refinement arise when processing high-viscosity melts. This study therefore proposes combining traditional polyethylene (PE) gel spinning with melt electrospinning to manufacture high-performance PE fibrous mats. First, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were blended into a PE gel. Then, the composite fibrous mats were prepared via melt electrospinning and hot stretching processes. Rheological and Raman analyses revealed that a composite fibrous mat containing 33 wt% LLDPE and 1.0 wt% UHMWPE exhibited optimal polymer compatibility and dispersion, resulting in the formation of a uniform physically entangled network. Hot stretching promotes stress-induced lamellar rearrangement and molecular-chain orientation, resulting in enhanced crystallinity, molecular orientation, and mechanical properties. At a draw ratio of 4, the stress of the composite fibrous mat increased from 17 MPa in the unstretched state to 54 MPa. This method overcomes the limitations of processing PE via melt electrospinning and provides a new approach for processing polymers with similar rheological properties.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolytes are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and ease of processing. However, PVDF chain scission during cycling often leads to battery failure. This study introduces a straightforward strategy for modifying PVDF using potassium oxalate (K 2 C 2 O 4 ). The resulting composite gel polymer electrolyte (CGPEK-X) facilitates the pre-formation of LiF, which enhances lithium-ion conductivity and promotes uniform lithium deposition. Moreover, the improved mechanical integrity of the composite effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth. When integrated into LiFePO 4 /Li cells, the optimized K 2 C 2 O 4 -doped system demonstrates stable cycling over 200 cycles at room temperature, achieving a discharge capacity of 120.3 mAh g −1 at 1°C. This work presents a novel approach to engineering PVDF-based electrolytes with balanced mechanical and electrochemical properties, offering valuable insights for the development of high-performance lithium-polymer batteries.

The recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a widely used polyester plastic, has become an increasingly significant issue. This study aims to develop an efficient and environmentally friendly catalytic system for the degradation of waste PET and realize the resource utilization of polyester. The methanolysis of PET was investigated using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Emim]BF 4 ) as a catalyst. The effects of temperature, time, [Emim]BF 4 dosage, and methanol dosage on the reaction were systematically examined. The conversion of PET reached 100% with a dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) yield of 74.06% under optimal conditions: 200°C, 2 h, a PET-to-[Emim]BF 4 mass ratio of 5:1, and a PET-to-methanol mass ratio of 6:1. Kinetic analysis revealed that the reaction followed first-order kinetics, with an apparent activation energy of 51.16 kJ/mol. A possible mechanism for the [Emim]BF 4 -catalyzed methanolysis of PET was proposed. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that [Emim]BF 4 could effectively reduce both the reaction energy barriers and the final-state energy, thereby enhancing the reaction rate and favoring the forward progression of the reaction.

The escalating requirements of high-frequency wireless communication and advanced semiconductor packaging necessitate the development of polymeric materials with superior thermal stability and low dielectric loss. In this work, we present the development of a norbornene (NB)-derived epoxy system, synthesized using 5-Ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) and phenol as the key staring materials. The resulted ENB-phenol diglycidyl ether (ENBDE) was then cured with conventional commercial bisphenol-A (BPA) diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) epoxy resin at various ratios (ENBDE-DGEBA). Owing to the intrinsically rigid, low-polarity cyclic structure of NB, the introduction of ENBDE into the DGEBA results in the thermosets with significantly improved thermal resistance (glass-transition temperatures exceeding 230°C), excellent thermo-oxidative stability, and exceptionally decreased dielectric loss (~0.0064 at 10 GHz). These standalone properties, combined with favorable moisture resistance and good mechanical property, identify this newly designed ENBDE polymer can be used as a highly promising electronic material for next-generation high-frequency and high-speed electronic applications.

Epoxy resin (EP) is one of the most widely used thermosetting materials; however, its high inherent flammability severely restricts its practical applications. To address this issue, a novel nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P)-containing hexafunctional monomer (HCPB) was synthesized and employed to partially substitute diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) in the preparation of flame-retardant epoxy thermosets (EP/HCPB), using polyetheramine (D230) as the curing agent. The effects of HCPB content on the thermal stability, mechanical strength, and flame retardancy of EP were systematically investigated. Specifically, the EP-HCPB 15 composite with 15.00 mol% HCPB achieved a tensile strength of 48.87 MPa, a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 30.5%, a UL-94 V-0 classification, and a glass transition temperature ( T g ) of 58.11°C. Furthermore, the flame-retardant mechanism of HCPB in the epoxy matrix was systematically elucidated, involving both gas-phase free-radical quenching and condensed-phase charring effects. This work provides a facile and effective strategy for the design and preparation of high-performance flame-retardant epoxy thermosets.

Herein, a low-cost, easily operated strategy is proposed to improve the flame retardancy and interfacial adhesion of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in polylactic acid (PLA) composites. Specifically, aminated polysiloxane containing tetrasulfide groups was grafted onto the surface of LDHs (denoted as KT-LDHs) by the condensation reaction. The results of detailed analysis showed that the surface of KT-LDHs was successfully coated polysiloxane with Si-S-N organic hybrid structure. It exhibited higher thermal stability than pristine LDHs within the melt processing temperature range of PLA. Owing to the presence of amino reactive groups and long alkyl chains on the surface, the interfacial adhesion between KT-LDHs and the PLA matrix was improved. Additionally, the PLA composite with 20 wt% of KT-LDHs could achieve a favorable UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index value of 30.5%. The formation of a dense char layer rich in Mg-Al-Si and the gaseous dilution/free radical quenching effect of elemental sulfur were considered to be the essential factors for reinforcing the flame retardancy of PLA. These were generated under the synergistic effect of LDHs and tetrasulfide polysiloxane with multiple flame-retardant mechanisms. Our strategy for LDHs modification overcomes the inherent limitations of single-component flame retardants and improves interfacial adhesion.
