The main problem for the application of hydrogen generated via hydrolysis of metal alloys is the low hydrogen generation rate (HGR). In this paper, active Al alloys were prepared using a new coupled method-melting-mechanical crushing-mechanical ball milling method to enhance the HGR at room temperature. This method contains three steps, including the melting of Al, Ga, In, and Sn ingots with low melting alloy blocks and casting into plates, then crushing alloy plate into powders and ball milling with chloride salts such as NiCl2and CoCl2were added during the ball milling process. The microstructure and phase compositions of Al alloys and reaction products were investigated via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersed X-ray spectroscopy. The low-melting-point Ga-In -Sn (GIS) phases contain a large amount of Al can act as a transmission medium for Al, which improves the diffusion of Al to Al/H2O reaction sites. Finer GIS phases after ball milling can further enhance the diffusion of Al and thus enhance the activity of Al alloy. The hydrogen generation performance through hydrolysis of water with Al at room temperature was investigated. The results show that the H2generation performance of the Al-low-melting point alloy composite powder is significantly higher than the results reported to date. The highest H2generation rate and H2conversion efficiency can reach 5337 mL·min−1·g−1for the hydrolysis of water with 1 g active alloy. Keywords:aluminum alloys;melting-crushing-ball milling;hydrogen generation performance;hydrogen storage

Aluminum–metal batteries show great potential as next-generation energy storage due to their abundant resources and intrinsic safety. However, the crucial limitations of metallic Al anodes, such as dendrite and corrosion problems in conventional aluminum–metal batteries, remain challenging and elusive. Here, we report a novel electrodeposition strategy to prepare an optimized 3D Al anode on carbon cloth with an uniform deposition morphology, low local current density, and mitigatory volume change. The symmetrical cells with the 3D Al anode show superior stable cycling (>450 h) and low-voltage hysteresis (~170 mV) at 0.5 mA cm −2 . High reversibility (~99.7%) is achieved for the Al plating/stripping. The graphite | | Al-4/CC full batteries show a long lifespan of 800 cycles with 54 mAh g −1 capacity at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 , benefiting from the high capacitive-controlled distribution. This study proposes a novel strategy to design 3D Al anodes for metallic-Al-based batteries by eliminating the problems of planar Al anodes and realizing the potential applications of aluminum–graphite batteries.

Aluminum (Al)-lithium (Li) alloys are ambitious candidates for application in energetic materials, however, the high reactivity of Al-Li compound and Li in alloys affects their thermal stability, which results in gradually lower active content and diminished performance, impeding their further application in energetics. In this study, the specific content of silicon (Si) was introduced into Al-Li alloy via the centrifugal atomization that allows in-situ assembly of Al , Li, and Si at the single particle level, thus resulting in more stable Al-Li-Si compounds instead of active Al-Li compounds and Li and enhancing their thermal stability. The results show that Al-Li-Si alloy powders are in a high degree of sphericity, which are composed of αAl and AlLiSi. Compared to Al-Li alloys, Al-Li-Si alloys initiate the oxidization at a higher temperature (∼600 ℃) since the existence of more stable Al-Li-Si compounds than Li in Al-Li alloys, which indicates a higher thermal stability. Al-Li-Si alloys also show high heat release and combustion efficiency similar to Al-Li alloys. In the meanwhile, Al-Li-Si alloy-based composites maintain almost the same combustion properties compared to Al-Li/PTFE energetics, along with prolonged combustion duration. Therefore, Al-Li-Si alloy powders are promising candidates for application in energetic materials considering their higher thermal stability and tunable combustion properties.

Rapid, sensitive, specific and stable detection of mycotoxin in food remains an extremely crucial issue. Herein, a magnetic-fluorescent immunosensing platform for the detection of zearalenone (ZEN) was proposed. The platform utilized Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) heterogeneous fluorescent metal–organic framework (MIL-53(Al)@AuNPs) labeled with ZEN-bovine serum albumin (ZEN-BSA) as signal probe and ZEN mono-antibodies coupled with magnetic NPs (MNPs-mAbs) as capture probe. Specifically, the heterogenization of AuNPs on the MIL-53(Al) surface improved its biocompatibility, and facilitated the loading of ZEN-BSA conjugates. The MNPs-mAbs could rapidly capture the target ZEN, simplify the immunoassay process and further improve the detection efficiency. The established competitive magnetic-fluorescent immunosensing platform had a wider linear response to ZEN in the range of 0.001–100 ng/mL with a lower limit of detection (LOD) at 0.0035 ng/mL, and could finish the whole detection process within 20 min, showing great potential for rapid and sensitive detection of food contaminants.

Lithium metal has been regarded as an ideal anode to meet the rapidly growing requirements on high energy density batteries , owing to their highest gravimetric capacity and their lowest redox potential . However, lithium metal batteries persistently suffer from serious issues, such as the unstable solid electrolyte layer and uncontrolled dendrite growth during plating/stripping, especially under high current density . Herein, we developed an innovative method to prepare dense LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires membrane and designed a LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires membrane/poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)-based gel polymer composite electrolyte (LPH-GPE) to address these issues. On the interface of LPH-GPE and lithium anode, uniformly dispersed aluminum is in situ generated by reducing LiAl 5 O 8 nanowires, which brings both superlithiophilic sites and uniform lithium ion flux, and thus enables the lithium ion depositing in plates rather than forming sharp lithium dendrites . The solid-state lithium/lithium symmetric cells with LPH-GPE exhibit significantly improved lifespan at 0.5 mA cm − 2 and short-circuit does not occur even at current density up to 4 mA cm − 2 .

Recently, biochar-related phosphate sorbents have been extensively investigated and achieved significant progress; however, there is still much room for enhancement on capturing performance and recovery of powdery ones after sorption. Herein, a new kind of adsorbent, in which biochar/Mg-Al spinel encapsulated in carboxymethyl cellulose-La hydrogels with cationic polymeric layers, was fabricated, aiming for integrating multi-advantages of each component for enhanced phosphate capture. Batch static experiments were correlated to the phosphate adsorption performance of the adsorbent. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 89.65 mg P/g at pH = 3. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent. More importantly, this composite adsorbent that integrated with biochar, Mg-Al spinel, cationic polymeric components exhibited favorable selectivity over coexisting anions (Cl - , SO 4 2- , HCO 3 – and NO 3 – ) and performed good reusability after five consecutive cycles. By virtue of the bead-like feature, fixed-bed column experiments demonstrated that the Thomas model fitted the breakthrough curves well under varied experimental conditions. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate on the designed composite adsorbent with multi-components could be described as the electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and inner-sphere complexation, which might account for the efficient phosphate capturing performance.

Arsenic (As) contamination of aquatic and soil environments is a global concern, highlighting the importance of As removal via high-efficiency and low-cost removal technologies. In the present study, novel trimetallic biochar was developed through pyrolyzing corn straw impregnated with inexpensive metal Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides. The results of SEM, FTIR, and XRD verified the formation of metal oxyhydroxides on the surface of the modified biochars, and the modification increased the specific surface area (SSA), total pore volume (TPV), and surface charge of the Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FAZ-CB). Compared with the original biochar, higher sorption rates and capacities was observed for the FAZ-CB. The maximum As (V) adsorption capacities of FAZ-CB reached 82.9 mg g −1 . A pot experiment showed that application of FAZ-CB decreased bioavailable As fractions in the red soil significantly reduced the uptake of As by arugula in edible part and root (42.6 and 56.8%, respectively). The present study demonstrated the superiority of FAZ-CB in the As(V) immobilization in red soil, suggesting that it is a promising candidate for practical application for As immobilization. Therefore, FAZ-CB can be used as a promising functionalized biochar to remediate As contaminated red soil.

Efficient production of fuels and chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is the main goal of biorefinery processes. Herein, the metal-modified heteropolyacids with tunable Lewis and Brønsted acid sites were designed as the monolithic multifunctional catalyst for valorizing cellulose and lignocellulosic biomass to alkyl levulinate, a versatile platform molecule. Among them, Al-exchanged two protons of H 4 SiW 12 O 40 (Al 2/3 H 2 SiW 12 O 40 ) was found to be uniquely effective. The kinetic behavior describing the conversion of cellulose to ethyl levulinate was investigated to monitor the process, and compared between parent H 4 SiW 12 O 40 and Al 2/3 H 2 SiW 12 O 40 to understand the mechanistic role of Al 3+ . The introduction of Al 3+ substantially facilitated cellulose depolymerization and glucose-to-fructose isomerization , leading to a high rate and product selectivity. The estimated activation energies for cellulose degradation and glucopyraoside alcoholysis decreased by 50.6 kJ/mol and 40.9 kJ/mol, respectively. 50–72% yields of ethyl levulinate were accomplished from cellulosic biomasses such as pine wood, eucalyptus, bamboo, bagasse and Napier grass. Al 2/3 H 2 SiW 12 O 40 allowed cellulose conversion in various linear alcohols producing high-yield alkyl levulinate, and could be reused multiple times with a good stability. This study opens a reliable and promising avenue for one-pot transformation of cellulose and raw lignocellulosic biomass to ester compounds.

M-type strontium ferrite is a kind of magnetic functional material with wide application prospect. In this work, SrFe 12− x Al x O 19 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and Sr 1− y Ca y Fe 8 Al 4 O 19 (0 ≤ y ≤ 0.4) have been prepared by a hydrothermal method, and the effects of Al 3+ doping and Al 3+ and Ca 2+ co-doping on the magnetic properties have been investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates all the samples are a hexagonal structure, and the shift of the diffraction peaks suggests that Al 3+ and Ca 2+ are successfully doped in SrFe 12 O 19 . Field emission scanning electron microscope images show the particles have the hexagonal shape with the size of 1.1–2.9 µm. Vibrating sample magnetometer reveals that the doping of Al 3+ and the co-doping Al 3+ and Ca 2+ can enhance magnetic properties of strontium ferrite. For example, the values of coercivity and the saturation magnetization of SrFe 8 Al 4 O 19 are 914.1 Oe and 44.0 emu/g, which are 3% and 117% enhancement compared with SrFe 12 O 19 , respectively. For Sr 1− y Ca y Fe 8 Al 4 O 19 , coercivity and saturation magnetization increase from 914.1 Oe and 41.8 emu/g to 1047.2 Oe and 50.2 emu/g when the Ca 2+ doping concentration increases from 0 to 0.4. Moreover, the effects of acid washing also on phase composition, morphology and magnetism are researched. The as-synthesized doping strontium ferrite will be useful for the applications in security switching and recording media.

To develop catalysts with superior stability for isobutane alkylation, La3+ exchanged FAU zeolites with varying framework Si/Al ratios were investigated. Based on the reaction performed in a continuous flow stirred tank reactor, a strong linear relationship between catalyst lifetime and strong Brønsted acid concentration was observed. Catalyst lifetime was speculated to change in an M-shaped pattern with respect to the framework Si/Al ratio, which implies there were at least two extreme Si/Al ratios in terms of catalyst stability. However, their product distribution differed significantly. LaFAU with a high Si/Al ratio led to enhanced acid strength, which resulted in higher cracking, self-alkylation activity, and poor product selectivity. In determining a balance between catalyst stability and product selectivity, a Si/Al ratio of ∼1.2 was selected as the optimal value for LaFAU zeolites.

Ellagic acid (EA) is a symmetric natural phenol bioactive compound present in fruits and nuts, and has attracted substantial interest worldwide owing to its beneficial health effects. Here, the exploration of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of MIL-101(Al)-NH 2 (MIL = Materials of Institute Lavoisier) for rapid and sensitive sensing of EA in aqueous solution was reported initially. The porous MIL-101(Al)-NH 2 MOFs was synthesized by solvent-thermal method with inexpensive 2-aminoterephthalic acid and aluminum salt, which exhibited uniform spherical crystals (~340 nm) and specific mesoporous structure (3.2 nm). The fluorescence intensity of MIL-101(Al)-NH 2 at 425 nm showed a good linear relationship with EA concentration in the range of 0.15–100 μM. The detection limit was as low as 43.8 nM, the rapid response time was within 2 min, and the cost of detection was low. In addition, the “turn off” fluorescence probe could be utilized for visual detection of EA according to the color change under the UV lamp. Based on the Stern-Volmer equation, the quenching constants was decreased with the rise of temperature, which indicated that the probable quenching mechanism was static quenching. The nanoprobe was successfully used to detect EA in the cherry and serum samples. MIL-101(Al)-NH 2 represents the first instance of MOFs-based fluorescent probe in EA detection. This work not only enriches the detection method of EA, but also expands the potential application of MIL MOFs in small molecules.

A novel method for the synthesis of MFI zeolites has been developed, which does not require any crystal seeds or solvent. The adaptability of this method was also evidenced; a series of ZSM-5 zeolites with differing Si/Al ratios (18∼∞) were synthesized, which to date, has been a challenge in the field of solvent-free synthesis. The materials were probed by in situ DRIFTS and 2D 27Al–19F HETCOR NMR spectroscopy, the results from which indicated that fluorine-containing species play a crucial role in the crystallization of ZSM-5. During the crystallization process F− anions coordinate with Al3+ cations, resulting in the formation of 6-coordinated “F–Al–O–Si” species. It is these intermediate species which drive the formation of tetrahedral [AlO4]− units in the zeolitic framework. The effectiveness of these materials as catalyst supports was subsequently assessed in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid and glucose, which exhibited a comparable performance to commercial ZSM-5. The simple, efficient and low-cost method presented herein provides an alternative approach for the green scaled-up synthesis of zeolites.
