Superior Catalytic Performance of Si-Modified Al2O3 Nanosheets Supported PtPd Alloy in Selective Hydrogenation of Naphthalene

Yanfu Tong,Weilong Xie,Huixian Sun,Jiachang Xu,Chenghua Yin,Xuejiao Chen,Hao Wu,Zhenxiang Zhao,Pingping Wu,Chunzheng Wang,Peng Bai,Wei Xing,Zifeng Yan

The construction of advanced catalysts with well-defined structural properties is crucial for the selective hydrogenation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in modern fossil fuel upgrading. In this work, a PtPd alloy catalyst supported on Si-modified Al2O3 nanosheet (Pt-Pd/A-Si-12) is synthesized, which exhibits three key structural advantages: a high specific surface area (422 m2 g–1), a large pore volume (0.8 cm3 g–1), and a surface enriched with finely modulated weak acid sites. Systematic characterization reveals that the hierarchical porous structure not only promotes uniform dispersion of active metal species but also facilitates mass transfer of macromolecular reactants, leading to a diffusion rate 1.47 times that of the unmodified Pt-Pd/A-Si-0 catalyst. Moreover, the tailored weak acid sites play a dual role: enhancing the metal–support interaction through electronic effects while concurrently creating a highly selective hydrogenation environment. As a result, the Pt-Pd/A-Si-12 catalyst achieves nearly complete conversion (∼100%) and a selectivity up to 93% under 250 °C and 5 MPa H2, along with significantly improved stability and high sulfur resistance. This study provides fundamental insights into the structure–performance relationship in selective hydrogenation and offers an effective strategy for the design of efficient industrial catalysts.

Exclusive Detection of Dimethyl Sulfide by a Pd–WO3 Sensor with the CuO/Al2O3 Filtering Overlayer

Ruofan Zhang,Xingxing Xie,Zanhong Deng,Jie Meng,Xiaohua Ji,Qi Zhang,Ruoqing Zhang,Siyuan Liu,Dandan Rong,Shimao Wang,Xiaodong Fang,Gang Meng

Abstract Selective detection of trace (weakly reducing) dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in highly humid exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, with the presence of strong reducing H2S interference gas, is essential for the early diagnosis of hepatic diseases. However, it remains a big challenge in principle. Herein, a bilayer MOS sensor with a Pd–WO3 sensing film and a CuO/Al2O3 filtering overlayer was proposed. The temperature-dependent H2S catalytic oxidation experiment suggests that CuO could effectively filter H2S even under room temperature. Dispersing the CuO particles into insulative Al2O3 carrier could not only selectively remove H2S without significant consumption of DMS but also isolate the underlying Pd–WO3 sensing layer’s response signal from interference caused by that of CuO. By adding the CuO/Al2O3 1:9 filtering overlayer, the response ratio of DMS to H2S was significantly enhanced from 3.3 to 50.4, furthermore, an ultrahigh response (701.3) to 10 ppm DMS, and a low limit of detection of 10 ppb under 90% RH were achieved, which promises the future breath disease diagnosis.

Comparative synthesis of Al2O3 via three wet-chemical methods: Implications for sintering behavior and microstructural evolution

Le Fu,Xinchen Liu,Mingxi Deng,Yongsheng Chang,Huasi Zhou,Gemei Cai

Wet-chemical method (WCM) provides a versatile and potentially scalable route for preparing alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) powder under relatively mild processing conditions. However, a comparative analysis of the structural evolution, phase transformation, and sintering behavior across different WCM-derived precursors remains lacking. In this study, three WCMs—direct precipitation (DP-Al 2 O 3 ), gas-bubbling-assisted precipitation (GB-Al 2 O 3 ), and sol-gel synthesis (SG-Al 2 O 3 )—were adopted to prepare Al 2 O 3 precursor powders. Their thermal evolution was then compared, focusing on temperature-dependent phase transformations, particle coarsening, and particle morphology evolution. Sintering behavior was likewise assessed under identical thermal profiles. Among the as-synthesized precursors, GB-Al 2 O 3 exhibits the smallest agglomerate size. Both DP-Al 2 O 3 and GB-Al 2 O 3 remain amorphous after calcination at 600 °C, whereas SG-Al 2 O 3 retains residual boehmite alongside amorphous Al 2 O 3 . Phase evolution pathways diverge: DP-Al 2 O 3 and SG-Al 2 O 3 follow the conventional γ-Al 2 O 3 →θ-Al 2 O 3 →α-Al 2 O 3 sequence, while GB-Al 2 O 3 undergo a direct γ- to α-phase transition, bypassing the θ-phase. The SG-Al 2 O 3 displays the lower densification onset temperature than DP-Al 2 O 3 and GB-Al 2 O 3 . All three ceramics exhibit heterogeneous densification, resulting in microstructural inhomogeneity featuring coexisting porous and locally densified domains. These results provide actionable guidance for rationally selecting and optimizing WCMs to tailor the particle size, morphology, and phase composition of Al 2 O 3 particles.

Enhancing the proportion of three-coordinated Al active sites on Co/Al2O3 for efficient CF4 decomposition

Heping Chen,Hang Zhang,Xiaojian Wang,Wenjie Luo,Jialin Zheng,Kang Liu,Junwei Fu,Hongmei Li,Zhang Lin,Liyuan Chai,Nan Hu,Min Liu

Aluminum (Al)-based catalysts are the most widely used materials for CF4 catalytic hydrolysis, where three-coordinated Al (AlIII) active sites play a pivotal role in C–F bond activation. The limited proportion of AlIII active sites in conventional Al-based catalysts suppresses their catalytic activity, thereby requiring high temperatures to achieve complete CF4 decomposition. In this work, we developed a Co-modified strategy to enhance CF4 hydrolysis performance by increasing the proportion of AlIII active sites. Structure characterization revealed that Co modification significantly raised the proportion of AlIII sites from 2% (pure Al2O3) to 13%. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis showed that the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits a CF4 adsorption capacity that is 2.0 times higher than that of unmodified Al2O3. Furthermore, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) detected a 2 cm−1 red shift in the characteristic C–F bond peaks on the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst, indicating enhanced C–F bond activation. As a result, the 0.1Co/Al2O3 catalyst achieved 100% CF4 decomposition at 580 °C for over 170 hours, significantly outperforming pure Al2O3 (58% and 20 hours). This work opens up a new approach for developing highly efficient catalysts for CF4 hydrolysis at low temperatures.

Enhanced low-temperature CO2 methanation over a Ni-based catalyst supported on La2O3–Al2O3 composite supports

Longhao Xu,Wenhao Zhang,Liang Shen,Minghui Zhu,Yi-Fan Han

Despite the substantial efforts in the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into high value-added products, directly transforming CO2 into CH4 at low temperatures still poses a formidable challenge. In this study, we report a bottom-up strategy to synthesize supported Ni catalysts on a doped Al2O3 support. LaAl mixed oxide was first synthesized via a co-precipitation method, followed by Ni species loaded using a deposition precipitation method. The CO2 conversion of the Ni/LaAl catalyst is found to be greatly enhanced, two times higher than that of the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 °C. The characterization results show that the introduction of La promotes the dispersion of Ni, reduces the reduction temperature of NiO and facilitates the adsorption of CO2 by increasing the basic sites. Temperature-programmed reduction with H2 demonstrated that La2O3 promotes the reducibility of NiO. Furthermore, kinetic analysis, in situ DRIFTS and CO methanation tests evidenced that La2O3 promotes the activation of CO2 and accelerates the CO hydrogenation step.

Optimizing dielectric attributes of NiO/P(VDF–HFP) composite films through filling fine α-Al2O3 particles

Gu Peng

Dielectric composites with high dielectric constant, minimal dielectric loss and low conductivity can well serve for energy storage capacitors. High dielectric loss is not favorable due to large energy waste. Here, to improve dielectric constant of poly(vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene) by electric percolation, semiconducting NiO filler was added to form composites. However, high leakage current from interfaces can lead to high dielectric loss. Doping insulating α-Al 2 O 3 particles with stable structure, low chemical activity and high modulus into above binary composites can reduce dielectric loss. By changing NiO dose, dielectric constant was well tailored. Dose of α-Al 2 O 3 was left unchanged. Dielectric loss, conductivity and dielectric constant of composites were measured. By the same NiO loading, dielectric loss, conductivity and dielectric constant in ternary composites can be reduced, compared with binary composites. The optimal ternary composite should contain 35 wt% NiO and 4 wt% α-Al 2 O 3 . Optimized dielectric traits of this composite can be reflected by dielectric constant of ~ 64 and dielectric loss of ~ 0.27 under 100 Hz electric field.

Interfacial CoAl2O4 from ZIF-67@γ-Al2O3 pellets toward catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate for metronidazole removal

Min-Ping Zhu,Jia-Cheng E. Yang,Xiaoguang Duan,Dan-Dan Zhang,Shaobin Wang,Baoling Yuan,Ming-Lai Fu

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based catalysts are rising stars in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, constructing an affordable and recyclable MOFs-derived catalyst with high reactivity and stability is highly desirable but still challenging. Herein, we unprecedentedly designed a novel CoAl 2 O 4 @γ-Al 2 O 3 pellet (CoAl 2 O 4 @AP) as a heterogeneous catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) toward ROS generation for metronidazole (MNZ) removal. A CoAl 2 O 4 shell was formed on the pellet surface by direct calcination of the surface-nucleated ZIF-67 on γ-Al 2 O 3 pellets. The strong and unique interactions between the Co species of ZIF-67 and γ-Al 2 O 3 resulted in the formation of interfacial CoAl 2 O 4 . The CoAl 2 O 4 @AP exhibited a remarkably higher efficacy for PMS activation than ZIF-67-derived Co 3 O 4 and commercial Co 3 O 4 . The effects of several reaction parameters (i.e., PMS dosage, reaction temperature, initial pH, and background inorganic ions) on MNZ removal were comprehensively investigated and the degradation pathways of MNZ were elucidated. The Co 2+ /Co 3+ and oxygen vacancies of CoAl 2 O 4 @AP were the intrinsic active centers for PMS activation to simultaneously generate a diversity of ROS, among which SO 4 − and 1 O 2 played the decisive roles in MNZ decomposition. After the reaction, CoAl 2 O 4 @AP can be easily separated from the bulk solution and regenerated via a PMS-assisted cleaning process, making the composites highly appealing for practical applications. This pioneering work on constructing microscopic CoAl 2 O 4 -based composites expands the application of MOFs-based catalysts in novel AOPs systems for the treatment of persistent emerging pollutants.

Electron-enriched Co-Eu-B nanoclusters confined in mesoporous Al2O3 enable ultrafast room-temperature NaBH4 hydrolysis

Kai Xu,Ruoyin Luo,Mingen Wu,Yi Xu,Chenggen Li,Ming Yang,Yuan Dong

Amorphous Co-Eu-B nanoclusters confined in mesoporous Al 2 O 3 were fabricated by an impregnation–chemical-reduction route. Their hydrogen-evolution performance during NaBH 4 hydrolysis was benchmarked against Co-B and Eu-modified Co-B analogues. Structure-activity correlations reveal a three-fold synergy. Geometric confinement by the Al 2 O 3 scaffold prevents nanoparticle agglomeration. Mixed-valent Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ injects electrons into Co via concurrent B → Co and Eu → Co pathways, generating an electron-rich Co δ− core. The Eu-Al-O interface markedly increases Lewis-acid site density, facilitating H 2 O polarization and B-H bond cleavage. Owing to this coupling, the optimised Co-Eu-B/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (Eu/Co = 0.17) delivers a peak hydrogen-generation rate of 2987.81 mL min −1 g −1 at 30 °C, lowers the apparent activation energy to 39.21 kJ mol −1 , and retains full activity over five consecutive cycles-outperforming previously reported Co-based systems. The study elucidates, for the first time, how rare-earth dopants and support engineering co-operate through structural, electronic and acid–base regulation, providing a transferable blueprint for low-cost, highly active and durable hydrolysis catalysts suitable for portable fuel cells and distributed hydrogen technologies.

Electrochemical behavior of NiCu anode in cryolite and the synergistic effect of Al2O3 on corrosion resistance

Qiao Yun-ze,Hua Yu,Wu Guang-xin,Shi Chen-yang,Huang Ying-de,Yang Wen-jie

Due to its excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, NiCu alloy has been extensively studied and utilized by researchers. However, existing research primarily focuses on the corrosion rate, current efficiency, and aluminum product purity of inert anodes, with limited detailed analysis of the corrosion mechanism. This study investigates the corrosion behavior of NiCu alloy in a Na 3 AlF 6 -AlF 3 -Al 2 O 3 system using cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarization, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Pure Ni, pure Cu, and an equiatomic NiCu alloy were selected as samples, and the corrosion resistance of the NiCu alloy was evaluated through electrolytic experiments. The results reveal that the corrosion resistance of NiCu alloy surpasses that of both Ni and Cu. A mixed oxide layer consisting of Cu 2 O, NiO, and NiAl 2 O 4 was formed on the surface of the NiCu alloy, effectively protecting the anode substrate while maintaining the stability of the electrolytic voltage. After electrolysis at a current density of 1 A/cm 2 for one hour, the thickness of the corrosion layer was measured to be 21.3 μm. Additionally, the presence of aluminum oxide was found to enhance the protection of the inert anode during electrolysis.

Significantly Boosted High-Temperature energy storage of polyetherimide film induced by BaTiO3/Al2O3/Ag composites nanofibers

LiHao Yang,QingYang Tang,ShuiMiao Xia,Jie Huang,GuanFei Liu,XuYuan Fan,Davoud Dastan,ZhiCheng Shi

Polymer dielectrics are essential materials for next − generation power systems. However, they suffer from low energy density and poor breakdown performance at high temperatures, which restricts their application in high-temperature fields. The BaTiO 3 /Al 2 O 3 /Ag nanofibers (BT/AO/Ag NFs) were fabricated via electrospinning as nanofillers to boost the high-temperature energy storage of polyetherimide (PEI) composites. Experiments and finite electric field simulations demonstrate that combining high permittivity BaTiO 3 , highly insulating Al 2 O 3 , and metallic Ag improves the dielectric permittivity and breakdown strength of PEI composites at high temperatures. Remarkably, the composite film incorporating merely 0.3 wt% BT/AO/Ag NFs achieves an ultra − high energy density of 9.047 J cm −3 at 200 ℃, representing a 147 % enhancement compared to pure PEI and surpassing most polymer composites filled with alternative nanofillers. Furthermore, this composite exhibits outstanding charge–discharge cycling stability (>100,000 cycles at 200 MV m −1 ) and superior power density (>1.145 MW cm −3 ) at 200 ℃, positioning it as an ideal candidate for high-temperature capacitor applications. The work indicates that this nanofiber architectural design not only provides an effective strategy for developing high-temperature dielectric composites, but also shows great potential in next − generation dielectric capacitors.

The fracture toughness of spark plasma sintered nano-nano t'-YSZ- Al2O3 in situ composite ceramics

Xiaolong Yi,Yaning Tang,Yanlin Huang,Xin Wang,Jin Jiang,Weixin Deng,Kuo Jiang

Nano-nano t'-YSZ-Al 2 O 3 composites were synthesized in situ using sol-spray pyrolysis process. The composite powders were sintered into dense ceramics by spark plasma sintering at 1300 °C. The toughness of the composite ceramics was studied, and the microstructure was characterized in detail using X-ray diffraction spectroscope (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Microstructural analysis revealed that α-Al 2 O 3 , with a grain size of approximately 100 nm, was distributed along the grain boundaries of YSZ. Notably, the toughness of the YSZ-Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics with 10 wt% Al 2 O 3 addition (85±5 J/m 2 ) was nearly twice that of single-phase YSZ (43±3 J/m 2 ). It is suggested that the nano-toughening can be comparable to ferroelastic toughening. Materials with enhanced toughness can significantly improve the thermal cycling life of coatings, indicating that nano/nano YSZ-Al 2 O 3 composites hold considerable potential for practical applications.

Penta-coordinated Al3+ Stabilized Defect-Rich Ceria on Al2O3 Supported Palladium Catalysts for Lean Methane Oxidation

Mingwei Wu,Wenzhi Li,Xia Zhang,Fengyang Xue,Tao Yang,Liang Yuan

Graphical Methane combustion : Defect-Rich CeO 2 −Al 2 O 3 supported palladium catalysts can prominently improve the dispersion of palladium species and strengthen the concentration of active surface oxygen species, resulting in excellent catalytic activity for methane combustion. In heterogeneous catalysis, the strong interaction between metal and support can significantly modulate the electronic properties of the metals and play a crucial role in metal particle dispersion and morphology. Herein, a facile strategy was utilized to fabricate highly dispersive palladium catalysts supported on defective Al 2 O 3 −CeO 2 for lean methane oxidation. Ceria was immobilized on the coordinatively unsaturated Al 3+ penta sites of γ-alumina activated by pre-reduction to fabricate hybrid-oxide support (abbreviated as RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 ), and then Pd precursor was uniformly deposited on the defective surface. Such a RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 interface can effectively upgrade the dispersion of deposited palladium species and improve the concentration of reactive oxygen species owing to strong electronic interactions, invoking a superior catalytic activity for lean methane oxidation. After loading 1.0 wt% palladium, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 exhibited a 90 % methane conversion at 328 °C under the space velocity of 60,000 mL g −1 h −1 , far lower than that of bare 1.0 wt% Pd/RAl 2 O 3 (400 °C). In addition, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 catalyst showed an excellent hydrothermal stability under the harsh conditions (600 °C, water vapor)for 120 h without obvious deactivation. The reaction pathway of total methane combustion was elucidated by in situ DRIFTS. The crucial intermediate compositions (carbon oxygenates and carbonate)on Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 surface are more readily oxidized into CO 2 and H 2 O. This work provides an effective interface-promoted strategy to develop efficient and durable palladium catalysts for many challenging reactions.
