Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S nanotubes (NT) with rough-surfaces and hollow heterostructure structures have been synthesized by sulfurizing the as-prepared Cu/Cu 2 O nanowires (NWs). The Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S NT electrode exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with low onset overpotential of 48 mV and a Tafel slope of 107 mV dec −1 in acidic solution. Furthermore, the overpotentials are only ~86 and ~214 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . The impressive catalytic performance of Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S NT toward HER can be attributed to the unique rough-surfaces, hollow structure, and the synergistic effect between multiple atoms and ions.

Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating was pulse electrodeposited by incorporation of Cu, TiN and ZrO2 simultaneously in Ni deposits from a citrate bath in the presence of additives. The surface morphology, structural and electrochemical properties of Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating were evaluated. Results illustrated that the nanocomposite coating exhibits nodular-like structure with aggregated granules dispersed on its surface. The anti-corrosion performance of Ni-Cu deposits could be reinforced much by incorporation of TiN-ZrO2 nanoparticles. The surface of the coating contains Ni, Cu, Ti, Zr, O and C elements and indicates the formation of the oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of the nanocomposite coating is not only dependent on the current density and duty cycle, but also their combination. The Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating electrodeposited at duty cycle of 70% and current density of 4 A dm−2 has the highest anti-corrosion performance. In comparison with duty cycle and current density, the effect of frequency on corrosion resistance is not much.

Development of metal-doped carbon dots (CDs) to effectively modulate their electronic properties and surface chemical reactivities is still in its early stage. In this paper, a facile solid-phase synthesis strategy was developed to synthesize Cu-doped CDs (Cu-CDs) using citric acid as the carbon source and Cu(NO3)2·3H2O as the dopant, respectively. The as-prepared Cu-CDs exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity to horseradish peroxidase and were stable under a wide range of pH and temperatures. Consequently, the Cu-CD-based chemiluminescence sensing was applied to sensitively detect glucose with a low detection limit of 0.32 μM, and the recoveries and the relative standard deviation of the serum sample are 87.2–112.2 and 8.16% (n = 6), respectively. Notably, the proposed chemiluminescence sensing was also successfully applied for label-free detection of glucose in complex biological samples, which envisioned its potential applications in clinical diagnosis and other analytical assays.

Metal-based photothermal therapy has been widely used in the biomedicine field and includes gold nanoparticles , silver nanoparticles and copper sulfide nanoparticles. Furthermore, the coordination bonding-based metal nanocomplex is a new generation of photothermal agents for cancer therapy due to its high photothermal transduction efficiency, good biocompatibility , biodegradation and bioactivity. In this study, we designed a coordination bonding-based copper (Cu(II))-carboxylate ternary architecture, which consists of a conjugate dopamine-modified nontoxic hyaluronic acid , copper ions and citric acid. When the Cu(II) coordinated with the carboxyl groups , the splitting d orbitals energy gap of Cu(II) and the capability of electron transition were enhanced, which can increase the extinction ability in the near-infrared region for enhancing photothermal therapy. Moreover, the degradation of hyaluronic acid by hyaluronidase highly expressed in the tumor microenvironment led to the release of Cu-citric acid complexes, thus exhibiting an additional chemotherapeutic effect. The nanocomplexes possessed high-performance photothermal conversion, determined to be 21.3%. The solution could be easily heated to above 42 °C, which was sufficient to ablate the cancer cells. An obvious decrease in cell viability was observed in B16F10 cells incubated with the nanocomplexes under laser at the lower concentration of 20 μg/mL Cu(II). Upon near-infrared laser irradiation, the nanocomplexes showed high photothermal therapy and chemotherapeutic efficacy for breast cancer in vivo . This study demonstrated that the Cu(II)-carboxylate coordination nanocomplex is a promising new effective and facilely prepared thermochemotherapy agent for combination therapy against cancer.

In this paper, a superhydrophobic Ag–Cu composite metal film was fabricated as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate. Ag–Cu composite metal film was prepared from galvanic displacement on commercial copper foil. The prepared silver films were modified by PFDT to create a stable superhydrophobic SERS platform. Superhydrophobic substrates were characterized by a variety of characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis, XPS and Raman spectra. The superhydrophobic substrate could enrich probing molecules with the volatilization of solvent. Mathematical model was presented and applied to investigate concentration factor of hydrophobic substrate. The measurements were in good agreement with the calculation results. The superhydrophobic Ag–Cu composite metal film can reduce the detection limits and provide a new way to prepare efficient SERS substrates for ultra-low concentration detection.

The bimetal catalyst Pt-Cu/SiO2 was prepared by the impregnation method. Its catalytic performance was investigated by the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. Pt-Cu/SiO2 exhibited much higher selectivity (64.1%) to cinnamyl alcohol than Pt/SiO2 (3.7%), while they showed similar conversion of cinnamaldehyde. This enhancement was attributed to the increase in the amount of the Pt0 species on the Pt-Cu/SiO2 surface, which is derived from the interaction between Pt and Cu revealed by XRD and XPS.

Cu-doped cerium oxides were successfully prepared by nitrate combustion method. The crysatlline phase evolution, micro morphology and photocatalytic performance of the products are systematically studied by XRD, SEM/EDX and degradation rate of methylene blue. The results show that at relative low temperature (<600°C), 20 mol% copper can be dissolved into CeO2 fluorite type cubic structure, however, at high temperature of 700°C, CuO phase desolution from CeO2 solid solution is detected by XRD, and confirmed by DTA for 5% Cu-doped sample. The as prepared photocatalysts show agglomeration of ultra fine particles with porous structure. Degradation results of methylene blue indicate that better photocatalytic performance is obtained for 5% Cu-doped CeO2 under the stimulated visible light than UV light irradiation (both 254 nm and 365 nm), even the power of former is half of the later. The loss of photocatalytic activity for higher doping samples (>5% Cu) is believed to be the serious agglomeration of the particles and desolution of CuO from CeO2 solid solution.

In this work, a chemiluminescence (CL) aptasensor was designed for detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR) by introducing Cu/Co nanorods acting as CL catalyzer. Cu/Co nanorods were firstly synthesized throughout a hydrothermal method . Then the thiolated MC-RR aptamer was immobilized on the surface of Cu/Co nanorods, which was employed for recognizing of MC-RR target. In the presence of MC-RR, the conformational change of MC-RR aptamer was happened via recognizing between MC-RR and its aptamer. The luminol CL was catalyzed by Cu/Co nanorods that influenced by conformational change of MC-RR aptamer. The formed MC-RR/aptamer composite prevented the diffusion channel of luminol substrate toward the Cu/Co nanorods surface and restrained the Cu/Co nanorods catalyzing luminol CL. And the intensity of CL depended on the concentration of MC-RR. Under optimal condition, the CL aptasensor had a linear range in 0.1 to 70 nM and a low detection limit of 3.3 × 10 −11 M for MC-RR. This study provided a significant method for MC-RR detection in real samples with excellent selectivity.

Cu/MgO and MgO nested on the surface of Raney Cu were prepared by a wet-mixing method and used as catalyst for glycerol hydrogenolysis. The texture of Raney Cu/MgO was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and CO 2 -temperature-programmed desorption techniques. Results indicated that MgO was well dispersed in the pores of Raney Cu. Moreover, Raney Cu with large specific surface area had a larger contact surface for MgO, and a new phase of Cu–MgO was produced. Glycerol hydrogenolysis was selectively catalyzed under the synergistic effect of Cu and MgO in Cu/MgO catalyst. Under the moderate conditions of 180 °C and 1 MPa H 2 , the conversion of glycerol was 36.2 wt% and the selectivity for 1,2-propanediol was ~85 wt% when chemical equilibrium.

Cu/ZSM5 catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation method and used for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and the subsequent decolorization of Rhodamine B (RhB). The as-prepared catalyst was characterized with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N 2 adsorption–desorption. The results showed that ZSM5 could effectively restrain the aggregation of CuO. The catalytic activity of Cu/ZSM5 was significantly higher than that of pure CuO due to its large surface area and uniform micropores. Furthermore, effects of several operational parameters such as pH of solution, PMS amount, Cu loading rate, and initial RhB concentration on the decolorization efficiency were investigated in detail. Finally, the stability of the Cu/ZSM5 was studied and the catalyst maintained high catalytic activity with the color removal more than 95% in 1 h after several rounds of regeneration.

Electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation is a cost-effective approach to degrade halogenated organic pollutants in groundwater, and Pd-based catalysts have been found to be an efficient cathode material for this purpose. In this work, a novel Cu@Pd bimetallic catalyst loaded on Ti plate was prepared via combined electrodeposition and galvanic replacement for electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation of atrazine, a typical halogenated pollutant. The obtained bimetallic catalyst with uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles possessed a large electrochemically active surface area of 572 cm 2 . The Cu@Pd/Ti cathode exhibited a higher electrocatalytic efficiency towards atrazine reduction than the individual Pd/Ti or Cu/Ti cathodes, and achieved up to 91.5% within 120 min under a current density of 1 mA cm −2 . Such an electrocatalytic reduction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0214 min −1 . Atrazine was selectively transformed to dechlorinated atrazine, and its degradation pathway was identified. Current density was found to have a critical influence on the atrazine reduction due to the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction at a higher current density. The fabricated bimetallic catalyst also exhibited a good stability. This work provides an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for chlorinated contaminate removal and groundwater remediation.
