Molecular perovskite energetic material DAP-4 is seen as a potential high-energy oxidant due to its high energy, high density, high oxidation capacity, and facile preparation technology. However, optimizing its energy release and reducing its thermal decomposition temperature are huge challenges for its future application. In this work, the role of iron (Fe) nanospheres in the energy release of DAP-4 was studied. Our research has shown that Fe powder can not only serve as a fuel to promote combustion, but also as an important catalyst to significantly improve the thermal decomposition, energy release, and burning rate of DAP-4. By adding 25% Fe nanospheres, the decomposition temperature of DAP-4 was reduced to 299.7 °C, which is the most reduction by 84.7 °C from 384.4 °C (raw DAP-4) to 299.7 °C (DAP-4/Fe-5 with 25wt% Fe nanospheres) was obtained. The decomposition activation energy also decreases by at least 69.5 kJ mol −1 from 229.4 kJ mol −1 (DAP-4) to 159.9 kJ mol −1 (DAP-4/Fe-1 with 5wt% Fe nanospheres). The combustion performance of DAP-4/Fe composites is significantly improved by a 4∼5 times shorter burn rate. The energy-releasing mechanism of DAP-4 with the presence of Fe nanospheres was proposed. Fe x O y at the surface of Fe nanospheres played an important role in the energy releasing of DAP-4. This work showed a new idea for the potential application of molecular perovskite energetic materials.

Aqueous Zn-CO 2 batteries are a new technology for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and converting CO 2 into valuable products. The development of high-performance catalysts is crucial for improving the efficiency of the CO 2 reduction reaction(CO 2 RR) in these batteries. The technical challenges of CO 2 RR catalysts include high cost, complicated synthesis and low Faraday efficiency. In this study, we developed an efficient and cost-effective CO 2 RR perovskite catalyst, by partially substituting Fe to the B site of precious metal-free La 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 (LSM) perovskite. Comprehensive investigation into the Structure, morphology, coordination information and electrochemical performance of pristine La 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 (LSM) and substituted La 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.6 MnO 3 (LSF 0.6 M) catalysts were conducted, LSF 0.6 M catalyst shows enhanced electrochemical performance, Faraday efficiency, battery durability and battery power density than LSM. Specifically, the Fe-doped catalyst shows a significant improvement in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) performance, with an 80% increase in current density, an 82% Faraday efficiency, and a 50% increase in power density of Zn-CO 2 battery. Characterization experimental results and DFT calculation reveal that Fe substitution can increase the perovskite lattice size to favor CO 2 absorption and *COOH formation, thus the improved CO yields. These analyses provided insights into the underlying mechanisms of the catalyst's performance in CO 2 RR within the battery system. These results highlight LSF 0.6 M perovskite as a very promising CO 2 RR electrocatalyst for Zn-CO 2 battery.

The interaction between a promoter and an active metal crucially impacts catalytic performance. Nowadays, the influence of promoter contents and species has been intensively considered. In this study, we investigate the effect of the iron (Fe)–zinc (Zn) proximity of Fe–Zn bimetallic catalysts on CO 2 hydrogenation performance. To eliminate the size effect, Fe 2 O 3 and ZnO nanoparticles with uniform size are first prepared by the thermal decomposition method. By changing the loading sequence or mixing method, a series of Fe–Zn bimetallic catalysts with different Fe–Zn distances are obtained. Combined with a series of characterization techniques and catalytic performances, Fe–Zn bimetallic proximity for compositions of Fe species is discussed. Furthermore, we observe that a smaller Fe–Zn distance inhibits the reduction and carburization of the Fe species and facilitates the oxidation of carbides. Appropriate proximity of Fe and Zn (i.e., Fe 1 Zn 1 -imp and Fe 1 Zn 1 -mix samples) results in a suitable ratio of the Fe 5 C 2 and Fe 3 O 4 phases, simultaneously promoting the reverse water–gas shift and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reactions. This study provides insight into the proximity effect of bimetallic catalysts on CO 2 hydrogenation performance. Graphical Abstract

Electrochemical determination of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl is meaningful but still challenging no matter from a social or academic perspective. Herein, we report a series of novel electrocatalysts based on Fe-containing metal–organic frameworks and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe-MOF/MWCNTs). The obtained Fe-MOF/MWCNT electrode materials all show ultrasensitivity on fentanyl determination. In particular, MOF-235/MWCNTs even exhibit an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03 μM with a wide linear range from 0.1 to 50 μM. Besides, this series of Fe-MOF/MWCNTs also displays excellent repeatability, selectivity, and stability. Moreover, they show good performance in real sample detection and achieve good recovery of 95.47%–102.41% and 96.62%–103.15% in blood and urine samples, respectively. This high performance in fentanyl determination is mainly contributed by the Fenton-like process and the adsorption function of the Fe-MOF. Therefore, these novel Fe-MOF/MWCNTs are promising electrocatalysts for point-of-care device fabrication and also have potential applications in fentanyl rapid test technology.

Hydrogenation of CO 2 into light olefins is an important route to carbon neutrality . Most of traditional researches focus on the catalyst component, structure, and promoter to enhance the selectivity of light olefins while ignoring the diffusion of products. Here, we report a NaFeZr-MOR composite catalyst for light olefin synthesis in CO 2 hydrogenation via pore confinement. The selectivity in hydrocarbons and STY (Space-time yields) of C 2–4 = is gradually increasing maximum up to 51.3% and 12.2 (mmol·g cat −1 . h −1 ), which lie in a high level among reported Fe-based catalysts. Further characterization revealed that the essence of selectivity change period is the accumulation and evolution of carbonaceous species, which causes the change of product diffusion behavior. It suppresses the escape of heavy hydrocarbons from MOR pores, leading to an increased light olefin, especially ethylene, which is called “dynamic confinement”. These findings provide a new insight for controlling low-carbon product selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation.

As a type of iodinated contrast medium (ICM), the diatrizoate (DTZ) found in aquatic systems has posed a serious threat to the ecosystem and to human health. In this study, Fe(II)-activated persulfate (Fe 2+ /PS) oxidation was employed to degrade DTZ, and the optimal operating conditions were determined. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were adopted to determine the dominant radicals and analyze the degradation paths, respectively. It was found that a PS concentration of 10 mmol/L, an n(Fe 2+ )/n(PS) ratio of 1:10, an initial pH of 3.0, and a high temperature increased the degradation efficiency of DTZ. After suppression of the oxidation process by tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) and methanol (MtOH), the EPR spectra demonstrated that DTZ degradation was attributed to the combined effects of SO 4 − and OH and that OH played a more important role. Based on the theoretical calculation and comparison of the reduction energies of possible degradation products, the path from DTZ to TP630 and then to TP628 and finally to TP602 was recognized as the main DTZ degradation pathway during the Fe 2+ /PS oxidation process. These findings validated and demonstrated that DTZ could be effectively degraded by Fe 2+ /PS oxidation, which is a promising approach to remove DTZ from water.

In this paper, non-aqueous Fe(OH) 3 /palygorskite dispersion was prepared and its liquid crystal phase behavior was investigated. Positively charged Fe(OH) 3 colloidal particles were put in to non-aqueous and organically modified palygorskite dispersion. The effects of organically treated palygorskite and Fe(OH) 3 on the preparation of stable palygorskite dispersion were characterized with FT-IR, XRD , Contact Angle measurement , Zeta potential detection, Settlement measurement and SEM , respectively. The addition of Fe(OH) 3 particles shifted the concentrations of the coexisting isotropic and nematic phases to higher values while at the same time markedly accelerated the phase separation. The influence of Fe(OH) 3 particles on the dispersion in magnetic field was also discussed.

Hybrid flow batteries are one of the most promising technologies for storing the electricity generated from intermittent renewables , such as wind and solar. However, most of the existing hybrid systems currently suffer from low power density and poor cycle performance resulted from the parasitic reactions. To mitigate these issues, here we report a tin-iron hybrid flow battery in which the stannous chloride anolyte is separated from the ferric/ferrous chloride catholyte. With the reversible tin metal deposition/stripping and ferric/ferrous chloride redox reactions at carbon surfaces , the present battery delivers an energy efficiency of 78.5% even at the current density of 200 mA cm −2 . In addition, owing to high hydrogen overvoltage of metallic tin, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction in the negative electrode can be largely avoided so that the battery can stably operate over 700 cycles without obvious efficiency decay. With the excellent rate and cycle performance, it is envisioned that the tin-iron flow battery is a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage applications .

Haloacetamides (HAcAms), a class of highly toxic nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs), have been widely detected in drinking water . The control of DBPs is an important measure to ensure the safety of drinking water. Due to the presence of residual chlorine and organic compounds that failed to be effectively removed, HAcAms could be formed in the finished drinking water distribution systems. In the study, Cu/Fe bimetal with different molar ratios of Cu to Fe was synthesized. This study reported that Cu/Fe bimetal reduced trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) to dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) and monoacetamide (MCAcAm), and the reduction ability of Fe was greatly improved due to the incorporation of Cu. The optimal HAcAm removal was achieved when the molar ratio of Cu to Fe was 2.0%, Cu/Fe bimetal could reach complete degradation of TCAcAm within 1 h. With the increase of Cu/Fe bimetal dose or the decrease of solution pH, the reduction ability of Cu/Fe bimetal for HAcAm removal also increased. The calculated integrated toxicity values from HAcAms, which was used to reflect the comprehensive control effect of Cu/Fe bimetal for HAcAms, were also reduced with the decrease of solution pH and the increase of bimetal dose. The release of Cu 2+ was not detected during the whole treatment process, Cu/Fe bimetal may be an excellent material for controlling DBPs as the end – control methods in tap water.

The photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides in aqueous TiO2 suspension under UV irradiation has been investigated using potassium ferrate as electron acceptors. The results showed that the stability of Fe(VI) is dependent on pH significantly, and the stability reduces obviously in the presence of UV-TiO2. The experiments indicated that Fe(VI) could effectively scavenge the conduction band electrons from the surface of TiO2. The photocatalytic oxidation of sulfonamides with Fe(VI) was found to be much faster than that without Fe(VI). The SD, SM, and SMX concentration was greatly reduced by 89.2%, 83.4%, and 82.0%, respectively, after 10 min with UV-TiO2-Fe(VI), comparing to 65.2%, 66.0%, and 71.9%, respectively, with Fe(VI) only in the dark and 71.3%, 72.7%, and 76.0%, respectively, with UV-TiO2. The pH value of solution significantly influenced the sulfonamides degradation in UV-TiO2-Fe(VI) system. The degradation amount of sulfonamides after 10 min was a maximum at pH 7. The intermediate products of sulfonamides oxidation by UV-TiO2-Fe(VI) were analysed by LC-HESI-MS-MS and the results suggested that a majority of sulfonamides turned into large-molecule products without complete mineralization.

Ni/Fe-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites were synthesized for dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The effects of the Ni content in Ni/Fe-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites, solution pH, and common dissolved ions on the dechlorination efficiency were investigated, in addition to the reusability of the nanocomposites. The results showed that increasing content of Ni in Ni/Fe–Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites, from 1 to 5 wt.%, greatly increased the dechlorination efficiency; the Ni/Fe–Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites had much higher dechlorination efficiency than bare Ni/Fe nanoparticles . Ni content of 5 wt.% and initial pH below 6.0 was found to be the optimal conditions for the catalytic dechlorination of 2,4-DCP. Both 2,4-DCP and the intermediate product 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) were completely removed, and the concentration of the final product phenol was close to the theoretical phenol production from complete dechlorination of 20 mg/L of 2,4-DCP, after 3 hr reaction at initial pH value of 6.0, 3 g/L Ni/Fe-Fe 3 O 4 , 5 wt.% Ni content in the composite, and temperature of 22°C. 2,4-DCP dechlorination was enhanced by Cl − and inhibited by NO 3 − and SO 4 2 − . The nanocomposites were easily separated from the solution by an applied magnetic field. When the catalyst was reused, the removal efficiency of 2,4-DCP was almost 100% for the first seven uses, and gradually decreased to 75% in cycles 8–10. Therefore, the Ni/Fe–Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites can be considered as a potentially effective tool for remediation of pollution by 2,4-DCP.

MIL-100(Fe) was used for the first time in the catalytic transformation of hexose sugars into lactic acid (LA). The as-synthesized MIL-100(Fe) was systematically characterized, and its superior morphological and textural properties were demonstrated to contribute greatly to the pronounced catalytic performance in fructose-to-LA conversion (up to 32% yield), as compared with other catalysts like Cu-BTC and MIL-100(Cr). The effects of reaction conditions including temperature, reaction time, and substrate loading were explored. In addition, MIL-100(Fe) could be easily reused for 4 cycles with no evident decrease in catalytic activity.
