Carbon-based materials have shown promising results in replacing commercial Pt/C as highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in renewable energy devices. Designing unique structures of carbon matrix and introducing more active sites are essential for their application as electrode materials. Herein, a feasible approach is reported to synthesize dispersive γ -Fe 2 O 3 clusters embedded in 1D porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) ( γ -Fe 2 O 3 @CNFs-12) through electrospinning, impregnation and pyrolysis processes. The resulted γ -Fe 2 O 3 @CNFs-12 exhibits excellent ORR performance in alkaline electrolyte with a surprising half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.905 V and merely 5 mV drop of the potential after 5000 cycles, outperforming that of commercial Pt/C. Meanwhile, it also shows considerable ORR performance in acidic and neutral media. The remarkable ORR catalytic activity and durability are primarily attributable to the well-designed 1D hierarchical porous structure and accessible γ -Fe 2 O 3 clusters that embedded in carbon nanofibers. γ -Fe 2 O 3 @CNFs-12 is also capable to act as an air cathode for Zn-air batteries with an open circuit voltage of 1.428 V. This work provides a new perspective to the novel design and synthesis of carbon-based ORR electrocatalysts.

A Z-scheme mechanism associated with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is proposed and proved in a ternary Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 composite for photocatalytic reactions. The Ag, Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 nanoparticles are prepared to exist in a closely connected Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 heterostructure . Compared to TiO 2 , the addition of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 causes a broad absorption in visible region by LSPR effect of Ag to facilitate electron transfer from TiO 2 to Ag. In addition, electron migration from TiO 2 to Fe 2 O 3 can also be detected, indicating the interface between TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 can offer a route with low resistance for charge separation and directional transfer. As a result, photocatalytic activities are greatly improved in Ag-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 , with the highest calculated apparent kinetic constant located at 0.027 min −1 , which is 7.3, 1.9, 1.7 and 1.5 times of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Ag-TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 , respectively. Free radical quenching experiments show that O 2 -∙ and positively charged holes are main oxidative species responsible for the degradation of dyes. Specifically, OH∙ radicals can be hardly found in pure TiO 2 under irradiation but can be extensively produced and participate in the degradation after the addition of Ag-Fe 2 O 3 , which further proves that a Z-scheme route dominates the electron transfer between TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 .

Polydopamine (PDA) functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PDCN) and α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (PDFe) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, XPS, and TEM. The complementary fillers of two-dimensional PDCN and zero-dimensional PDFe incorporated into waterborne epoxy (WEP) greatly improve the corrosion protect properties of composite coating, which was demonstrated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and macroscopic surface morphology. Results showed that PDA modified g-C 3 N 4 and α-Fe 2 O 3 composite fillers (PDCN/Fe) have much superior synergistic effect on the improved barrier function of coatings than pure mixture of g-C 3 N 4 and α-Fe 2 O 3 (CN/Fe). This research indicates that the synergistic effect of nanofillers of different dimensions can be greatly stimulated by the good dispersibility in matrix, which has significant potential in improving corrosion protection properties of composite coatings.

In this work, α-Fe 2 O 3 double-layer hollow spheres with carbon coating (DLHS@C) are synthesized by a general “penetration-heterogeneous nucleation” approach using carbonaceous sphere templates combined with subsequent annealing. This hierarchy hollow sphere structure with carbon coating rationally combines three advantage aspects: shorten transport length for lithium ions and charges, sufficient void space to buffer the volume expansion, and enhanced electric conductivity. When tested for lithium storage, α-Fe 2 O 3 DLHS@C composite electrode exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 1735 mAh g -1 and the reversible capacity of 823 mAh g -1 after 100 cycles at the current density of 100 mA g -1 in the voltage range of 0.01–2.5 V (vs. Li + /Li) and retains a capacity of 470 mAh g -1 even at a large current density of 500 mA g -1 after 500 cycles. The α-Fe 2 O 3 DLHS@C electrode demonstrates excellent electrochemical properties with high capacity, good cycling stability, and excellent rate capability as potential anode material for lithium ion batteries.

In this study, an ultrasensitive voltammetric sensor was constructed for the simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) using shuttle-like α-Fe2O3 nanoparticle/nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposites (Fe2O3–NG). The surface morphologies, crystalline structures, and electrochemical properties of Fe2O3–NG were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and AC impedance spectroscopy. Coupling shuttle-like α-Fe2O3 with NG nanosheets not only enlarges the electrochemically active surface area and prevents the agglomeration of α-Fe2O3 NPs or NG nanosheets, but also increases the electroconductivity of α-Fe2O3 NPs and boosts its catalytic ability, thereby affording more electroactive sites for the adsorption and oxidation of target analytes. As expected, the Fe2O3–NG/GCE shows extraordinary electrocatalytic oxidation capacities toward DA and UA over two wide dynamical response concentration ranges of 0.5–10 μM and 10–100 μM, with low detection limits (LOD) of 0.080 and 0.075 μM for DA and UA, respectively. Moreover, the Fe2O3–NG/GCE shows high anti-interference ability against several potential interferences and retains stable voltammetric responses for at least a week. Finally, the Fe2O3–NG/GCE achieves the simultaneous determination of DA and UA in human serum with reliable results.

A flame retardant was synthesized with polyaniline modified Fe 2 O 3 (PANI@Fe 2 O 3 ). Upon the incorporation of expandable graphite and PANI@Fe 2 O 3 , the resulting epoxy resin composite exhibited significant flame retardant activity in the condensed phase by forming a worm-like laminated carbon layer which constituted of the benzene ring , Si–O and Si–N bonds. The limit oxygen index of the EP composite loaded with 7 wt% EG and 1 wt% PANI@Fe 2 O 3 (EP/7EG/1PANI@Fe 2 O 3 ) was increased from 20.7% of EP to 34.6%, scoring the V-0 level in the UL-94 test. The total heat release and total smoke release of EP/7EG/1PANI@Fe 2 O 3 were 31.3% and 55.5% lower than those of EP, respectively. Meanwhile, with the addition of 4 wt% EG and 4 wt% PANI@Fe 2 O 3 , the tensile and flexural strength of EP composites were 23.5% and 62.7% higher than those of EP loaded with 8 wt% EG, respectively. Besides, the surface resistivity of EP/7EG/1PANI@Fe 2 O 3 was 73% lower than that of EP.

How to directionally design the hollow zeolite via a green route is of great significance. Here, we successfully synthesized the hollow Fe-silicate-1 encapsulated ultra-small Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles (2.5 nm) with higher yield (85.2%) by mother liquid than traditional dissolution-recrystallization for the first time, which was achieved by precisely regulating the number and distribution of defects in zeolite and cleverly utilizing the TPAOH and nuclei in mother liquor. The effects of synthetic temperature, synthetic period and addition amount of parent zeolite on the formation of hollow zeolite have been investigated and the effect of synthetic conditions on the defects in parent zeolite has been also firstly quantified. The corresponding formation mechanism has been proposed. The abundant inner defects provided by the zeolite synthesized at 130 °C for 1 day and large amount of TPAOH remaining in mother liquid are conducive to the formation of hollow zeolite. Meanwhile, both parent zeolite and nuclei (4-, 5-member rings and structure units) in mother liquid obtained at 130 °C play the crucial roles in enhancing the zeolite yield. Notably, Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles could decompose into small fragments by the interaction with nuclei in mother liquid. Partial ultra-small Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles would be encapsulated in cavity and the rest could be inserted in the zeolite framework, which is significantly different from the conventional dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. The obtained encapsulated catalyst shows the superior catalytic performance and stability in phenol and tetracycline degradation reactions.

Surface interface regulation is an important research content in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. To improve the interface interaction between the active component and matrix, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to tailoring the morphology, size, and structure of composite catalysts. In this work, we report a confinement strategy to synthesize a series of core-shell catalysts loaded with metal oxides on titania nanotubes (TNTs), which were applied to the selective catalytic reduction of NO x with ammonia. Interestingly, the core-shell catalyst with confinement of TNTs exhibited the remarkable activity at low temperature region, N 2 selectivity and sulfur tolerance. Benefiting from the superior interfacial confinement characteristic of TNTs and Fe 2 O 3 , strong component interactions, the surface acid sites and strong oxidizability of MnO x were properly regulated, thus obtained the outstanding activity, N 2 selectivity and provide chemical protection to effectively prevent SO 2 poisoning. As far as the reaction mechanism, we found that the adsorption and reactivity of Lewis acid sites were the dominant factors affecting the activity in the NH 3 -SCR process by in situ DRIFT spectra. In general, our work provides an innovative strategy for constructing an TNTs-enwrapped nanocomposite with nano-confinement and core-shell structure to improve the low temperature SCR process.

In this work, a cost-effective and eco-friendly calcium-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 (Ca-Fe 2 O 3 ) with abundant oxygen vacancies was fabricated using a scalable precipitation-calcination method to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for wastewater purification. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the incorporation of Ca 2+ into the α-Fe 2 O 3 structure enhances the electron transfer from α-Fe 2 O 3 to PMS, facilitating the activation of PMS. The degradation of Rhodamine B by 5%Ca-Fe 2 O 3 proceeded with a reaction constant 8 times higher than that of pristine α-Fe 2 O 3 . This can be attributed to the increased generation of 1 O 2 and O 2 • − , increased specific surface area and enhanced electrical conductivity. The applicability of the 5%Ca-Fe 2 O 3 /PMS system was investigated including its operating parameters and stability, and the intermediates involved in the reaction were identified. The 5%Ca-Fe 2 O 3 /PMS system exhibited excellent degradation efficiency in natural water samples. This work opens up new perspectives for designing highly efficient catalysts and renders iron oxides potential candidates for environmental remediation.

Graphical Dope to promote : A high-performance photoanode consisting of NiO nanoparticles anchored on a gradient P-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorod array (NiO/P-α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is successfully fabricated. The electrochemical results show that the photoanode presents a high photocurrent density and long-term stability for improved water oxidation. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting efficiency of a hematite-based photoanode is still far from the theoretical value due to its poor surface reaction kinetics and high density of surface trapping states. To solve these drawbacks, a photoanode consisting of NiO nanoparticles anchored on a gradient phosphorus-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 nanorod (NR) array (NiO/P-α-Fe 2 O 3 ) was fabricated to achieve optimal light absorption and charge separation, as well as rapid surface reaction kinetics. Specifically, a photoanode with the NR array structure allowed a high mass-transport rate to be achieved, while phosphorus doping effectively decreased the number of surface trapping sites and improved the electrical conductivity of α-Fe 2 O 3 . Furthermore, the p–n junction that forms between NiO and P-α-Fe 2 O 3 can further improve the PEC performance due to efficient hole extraction and the water oxidization catalytic activity of NiO. Consequently, the NiO/P-α-Fe 2 O 3 NR photoanode produced a high photocurrent density of 2.08 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode and a 110 mV cathodic shift of the onset potential. This rational design of structure offers a new perspective in exploring high-performance PEC photoanodes.

High activity and long-term stability are particularly important for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based degradation processes in wastewater treatment, especially under a flowing state. However, if the highly active nanomaterials are in a powder form, they could disperse well in water but would not be convenient for application under varied flow rates. A metal oxide/bacterial cellulose hybrid membrane fixed in a flowing bed is expected to solve these problems. Herein, α-Fe2O3 nanodisk/bacterial cellulose hybrid membranes as high-performance sulfate-radical-based visible light photocatalysts are synthesized for the first time. The bacterial cellulose with excellent mechanical stability and film-forming feature not only benefits the formation of a stable membrane to avoid the separation and recycling problems but also helps disperse and accommodate α-Fe2O3 nanodisks and thus enhances the visible light absorption performances, leading to an excellent PMS-based visible light degradation efficiency under both stirring and flowing states. Particularly, the optimized hybrid membrane photocatalyzes both cationic and anionic organic dyes under a flowing bed state for at least 84 h with the catalytic efficiency up to 100% and can be easily separated after the reaction, confirming its remarkable catalytic performance and long-term stability. Even under varied flow rates during the continuous process, it efficiently degrades rhodamine B and orange II from 3 to 16 mL h–1. When the flow rate goes back from high to low, the hybrid membrane quickly recovers its original performance, demonstrating the high activity and stability of the α-Fe2O3/bacterial cellulose membrane.

Adsorption and photodegradation are promising approaches for removing organic pollutions. In this study, we combined these two processes by co-loading Fe-TiO 2 and Fe 2 O 3 quantum dots (QDs) on porous MCM-41, using a simple hydrolysis method. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that Fe-TiO 2 QDs are formed at low Fe precursor concentrations, while additional Fe 2 O 3 QDs are formed at higher Fe precursor concentrations. The Fe 2 O 3 and Fe-TiO 2 QDs impart high adsorption capacity and high photoactivity to the porous MCM-41, respectively. Thus, their combination results in a synergic effect of the adsorption and photodegradation. The highest-performing sample exhibits excellent performance in removing rose bengal from aqueous solution.
