Garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) has been widely used as a filler in composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) to achieve high-performance solid-state batteries (SSBs). Unfortunately, moisture-sensitive LLZO suffers from surface Li2CO3 passivation when being exposed to an ambient atmosphere. The insulated Li2CO3 layer is thought to reduce the Li+ transportability of CSEs. However, further studies are still needed to find out the underlying mechanism, which helps to guide future filler modification and electrolyte design. Herein, the role of the Li2CO3 layer in CSEs is elucidated from different perspectives. The passivate Li2CO3 layer is verified to prohibit the formation of the high conductive interlayer, change the Li+ transport pathway, and decrease the carrier concentration in CSEs. Also, the Li2CO3 layer would reduce the electropositivity of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) particles, which therefore weakens the anchoring effect toward bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI)−. Accordingly, without Li2CO3, the electrolyte of polyethylene oxide/LiTFSI/IL (ionic liquid) with LLZTO-AT (PLILA) displays 2 times higher ionic conductivity and an improved Li+ transference number of 0.49. Additionally, an excellent cycling performance is presented in Li symmetric cells and full cells with PLLA. This work provides a novel perspective for future research on lithium-ion transport mechanisms and inspires designing better-performance SSBs.

Defect engineering has been an efficient means to govern the electrocatalytic performances of oxygen electrode in Li-O 2 batteries. Herein, we introduce N atoms into MoS 2 for manufacturing sulfur vacancies to improve the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics of rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries. The obtained results show that N doping opened the crystal distance space of N-MoS 2 , reduced the charge transfer resistance and simultaneously induces Mo-N bonds and a large number of sulfur vacancies. The assembled Li-O 2 batteries with N-MoS 2 as the cathode electrocatalyst deliver discharge specific capacity of 5205.5 mAh g −1 at the current density of 100 mA g −1 , which is much higher than the MoS 2 (2600.3 mAh g −1 ). It also shows excellent cyclic performance with 224 cycles at the current density of 200 mA g −1 within a capacity limitation of 1000 mAh g −1 . Overall, the as-developed N-MoS 2 could be regarded as a promising cathode electrocatalyst for Li-O 2 batteries.

Tin chalcogenides are considered as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical lithium-storage capacity. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the composites of tin chalcogenides and graphite, that is, SnS/C, SnSe/C, and SnS0.5Se0.5/C, via a simple one-pot solid-state method. During the electrochemical test, they exhibit excellent lithium-storage ability and cyclic performance as the anode electrodes of LIBs due to the introduction of carbon. In particular, (i) SnS/C displayed a high specific capacity of 875 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 over 200 cycles; (ii) SnSe/C presents 734 mAh g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 100 cycles, and it delivers 690 mAh g–1 at 1.0 A g–1 over 300 cycles; and (iii) the SnS0.5Se0.5/C composite electrode delivers a specific capacity of 643 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 over 150 cycles. Furthermore, another series of tin-based composites have also been successfully fabricated (i.e., Sn/C, SnS2/C, SnSe2/C, and SnTe/C), showing the general applicability of the synthetic route applied here. Our synthetic approach demonstrates a promising route for the large-scale production of high-performance tin chalcogenides/C anode materials for LIBs and other battery systems (e.g., Na-ion and K-ion batteries).

Li 2 ZrCl 6 (LZC) solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have been recognized as a candidate halide SSEs for all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs) with high energy density and safety due to its great compatibility with 4 V-class cathodes and low bill-of-material (BOM) cost. However, despite the benefits, the poor chemical/electrochemical stability of LZC against Li metal causes the deterioration of Li/LZC interface, which has a detrimental inhibition on Li + transport in ASSLBs. Herein, we report a composite SSE combining by LZC and argyrodite buffer layer (Li 6 PS 5 Cl, LPSC) that prevent the unfavorable interaction between LZC and Li metal. The Li/LPSC-LZC-LPSC/Li symmetric cell stably cycles for over 1000 h at 0.3 mA/cm 2 (0.15 mAh/cm 2 ) and has a high critical current density (CCD) value of 2.1 mA/cm 2 at 25 °C. Under high temperature (60 °C) which promotes the reaction between Li and LZC, symmetric cell fabricated with composite SSE also display stable cycling performance over 1200 h at 0.3 mAh/cm 2 . Especially, the Li/NCM ASSLBs fabricated with composite SSE exhibit a high initial coulombic efficiency, as well as superior cycling and rate performance. This simple and efficient strategy will be instrumental in the development of halide-based high-performance ASSLBs.

Summary Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are a promising next-generation energy-storage system due to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the rapid capacity fading of high-sulfur-loading cathodes caused by the shuttle of soluble polysulfide intermediates between two electrodes heavily hinders the development of high-energy-density Li-S batteries. We develop in this work a powerful functional separator to suppress the polysulfide shuttle by coating two-dimensional nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets on one surface of a commercial polypropylene separator. The high surface area, high content of nitrogen dopants, and close-packing laminar structure of the two-dimensional porous carbon nanosheets make them ideal to fabricate a lightweight and thin separator for high-energy-density Li-S batteries. The separator reported in this work endows the high-sulfur-loading cathodes made of commercial carbon materials with significantly enhanced performances that are comparable with or even superior to the state-of-the-art sulfur composite cathodes, opening up new opportunities for designing practical high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

The Magnéli-phase λ-Ti 3 O 5 , characterized by its unique flat-band electronic structure, is a promising photothermal conversion material for solar-driven interfacial evaporation. However, its intrinsic thermodynamic instability at ambient temperature severely constrains large-scale practical application. To overcome this challenge, we developed a scalable synthesis strategy for stabilizing λ-Ti 3 O 5 via arc-melting followed by high-energy ball milling, coupled with Lithium (Li) doping. Structural and surface analyses confirm that Li incorporation effectively stabilizes the λ-phase. Morphological studies reveal particle refinement (∼1–2 μm) with increased surface roughness and oxygen vacancies, further enhancing solar absorption with overall reflectivity < 6% in the range of 250–2500 nm. Incorporating 10 wt.% of Li 0.25 Ti 2.75 O 5 particles into a Polyvinyl alcohol/Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) porous hydrogel evaporator yielded an evaporation rate of 5.22 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun irradiation. Remarkably, the evaporator demonstrated excellent resistance to salt crystallization, maintaining stable performance during a 24-h continuous operation in 3.5 wt.% saline water. This work not only provides a practical and scalable approach for stabilizing λ-Ti 3 O 5 but also offers valuable insights into the development of efficient, durable photothermal materials for solar desalination technologies.

Kesterite Cu 2 ZnSn (S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) solar cells, as an emerging class of inorganic photovoltaics, offer promising application prospects owing to their earth-abundant and environmentally benign constituent elements, as well as a high theoretical power conversion efficiency. However, the relatively low majority carrier concentration, detrimental band tailing induced by bulk Cu–Zn disorder defects, and severe interface recombination limit further improvement in device efficiency. In a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution system, extrinsic cation doping with Li + and Cd 2+ was introduced to optimize both bulk and interfacial properties of the CZTSSe absorber. The results show that the co-incorporation of Li and Cd into the absorber significantly improves its crystallinity, reduces defect density, and suppresses band tailing states, while simultaneously enhancing the hole carrier concentration of CZTSSe. Furthermore, Li + Cd co-doping results in more favorable conduction band offset (CBO) at CZTSSe/CdS heterojunction interface compared to the control group, which effectively reduces carrier recombination and enhances carrier collection efficiency, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 14.2% for the champion device.

Nanofiltration membranes were prepared by regulating monomer diffusion. • Nanofiltration membranes with tailored pore distribution and thinner structure achieved • Nanofiltration membranes exhibit an exceptional Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 173. • Nanofiltration membranes exhibit a high water permeance of 15.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Amid the urgent demand for lithium resources driven by the global carbon neutrality goals and the rapid development of the new energy industry, efficiently separating and extracting lithium from salt lakes has emerged as a challenge. Current nanofiltration membranes exhibit issues such as low selectivity, limited permeance, and broad pore size distribution in Li + /Mg 2+ separation. This study proposes a novel strategy for the synergistic control of interfacial polymerization by combining electrically generated in-situ bubbles with surfactants. Electrolysis of water generates negatively charged hydrogen bubbles that attract positively charged amine monomers via electrostatic interaction. Synergized by electric field forces and the buoyancy of the bubbles, the amines are transported to the water/hexane interface for enrichment. Meanwhile, a surfactant added to the oil phase forms a monolayer at the oil-water interface, reducing surface tension and promoting the diffusion of the amine monomers. These mechanisms synergistically modulate interfacial polymerization kinetics, optimizing polyamide density and pore size distribution. The resulting membrane demonstrates an excellent Li + /Mg 2+ selectivity of 173 and high water permeance of 15.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . This work presents a novel and feasible strategy that holds promise for achieving large-scale production and advancing the development of efficient lithium extraction technologies from salt lake brine.

With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, the demand for lithium batteries is growing. Extracting lithium from salt-lake brine is an important method for lithium separation. This study successfully synthesized high-valence Zr 4+ -doped spinel manganese oxides using a hydrothermal-calcination approach to enhance adsorption capacity and address capacity degradation issues during the cycling of manganese-based lithium-ion sieves (Mn-based LIS). The results indicate that Zr 4+ -doping reduces the particle size and increases specific surface area from 24.22 to 32.70 m 2 g −1 . The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model for 2% ZrCl 4 -doped H 1.6 Mn 1.6-x Zr x O 4 (2-HMZO) indicating a monolayer chemisorption mechanism, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities ( q m ) of 2-HMZO at 298, 308, and 318 K were 55.13, 58.24, and 65.92 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption capacity of the 2-HMZO achieved 88% of its theoretical adsorption capacity. After ten cycles of adsorption and desorption, the material maintained the Mn dissolution loss of 3.77%. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations confirmed that Zr 4+ doping enhances structural stability and facilitates easier Li + transport. Combined characterization results further confirmed that the primary Li + adsorption mechanism of 2-HMZO involves ion exchange. This research provides experimental evidence for advancing the practical application of Mn-based LIS and achieving efficient lithium extraction from salt-lake brines. Graphical abstract A spinel-type Zr-doped H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 adsorbent was synthesized via hydrothermal, solid-state and ion-exchange methods, using high-valence Zr 4+ as the dopant ion. The introduction of Zr 4+ significantly enhanced the Li + adsorption capacity of HMO, and it also exhibited excellent ion selectivity in real brine samples. The primary adsorption mechanisms are ion exchange and surface electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the adsorbent well retains its intact spinel structure even after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles.

Covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets are ideal
building
blocks for fabricating high-performance membranes. The production
of COF nanosheets in water is a significant step towards sustainable
synthesis but remains an unresolved challenge. Herein, we report an
aqueous synthesis method for COF nanosheets via a group capping-decapping
strategy. The in-plane-dominated COF growth is driven by two factors:
first, capping of aldehyde groups with secondary amines enhances monomer
solubility in water for homogeneous nucleation; second, the presence
of ionic groups on amine monomers suppresses out-of-plane stacking
via electrostatic repulsion. By adjusting Brønsted acids or bases
concentrations, the decapping rate and the subsequent COF polymerization
rate can be tuned, enabling precise control over the reaction kinetics.
Consequently, highly crystalline ionic COF nanosheets can be mildly
synthesized in water with high volumetric yield and at a gram scale.
The COF composite membranes assembled from nanosheets and polyethylenimine
exhibit high selectivity and outstanding Li + recovery efficiency
for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. Furthermore, the excellent
processability of COF nanosheets is demonstrated by fabricating the
tubular membrane module.

Positive surface charge dominates Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity in commercial NF membranes. • The DK membrane achieves a separation factor of 24.6 at a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 150. • A narrow pore size distribution is key to achieving precise ion sieving. • The DSPM&DE model predicts performance by quantifying volume charge density (χ). The efficient extraction of lithium from salt lake brines characterized by high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios presents a significant challenge in sustainable resource recovery. This study presented a systematic evaluation of six commercial nanofiltration (NF) membranes (GH, GT, NF90, NF270, DK, SelRO). Quantitative analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between the surface amine group density and the Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor (up to 24.6), establishing amine density as a key descriptor for selectivity. Higher amine density yielded a more positive surface charge, which enhanced Donnan exclusion of Mg 2+ . Membranes exhibiting a positive surface charge (DK, SelRO, GT) achieved superior Mg 2+ rejection (>90%) and high separation factors. In particular, the DK membrane exhibited a separation factor of 24.6 at a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 150, attributable to enhanced Donnan exclusion of divalent cations. Furthermore, the pore size distribution emerged as a critical determinant of selectivity, wherein narrow distributions (e.g., Sₚ = 0.26 for the GT membrane) significantly enhanced separation precision. The Donnan Steric Partitioning Model with Dielectric Exclusion accurately predicted separation performance (error <15%), identifying volume charge density as the dominant factor. This work established a quantitative correlation between surface amine density and Mg 2+ /Li + separation performance, providing practical insights for membrane selection and future membrane design. A pioneering phosphate-intercalation strategy is introduced to improve kinetics for lithium storage. • The Fe–O–P framework that actively modulates lithium-ion transport within the iron oxalate lattice. • The optimized anode achieves an exceptional capacity of 1643 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Iron oxalate has recently attracted considerable interest as a promising conversion-type anode for rechargeable batteries owing to its intrinsically high theoretical capacity. However, its practical application is severely limited by sluggish reaction kinetics, resulting in poor rate performance. In this work, polyanionic phosphate species are introduced as pre-intercalated guest ions to construct a Fe–O–P framework that actively modulates lithium-ion transport within the iron oxalate lattice. Systematic control of the phosphate-to-oxalate substitution ratio effectively tunes the lattice dynamics of FeC 2 O 4 , thereby enhancing the lithium-storage kinetics of the material. Combined experimental characterization and theoretical analysis reveal that phosphate intercalation not only accelerates electron transfer but also enlarges the interlayer spacing that accelerate lithium-ion diffusion. Consequently, the phosphate-intercalated iron oxalate delivers an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 1643 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and maintains a rate capacity of 740 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 . This work demonstrates the essential role of the pre-intercalated polyanion on improve kinetics for lithium storage in iron oxalate and provides a rational design strategy for high-performance conversion-type anodes with intrinsically fast lithium-ion transport. Pre-intercalated polyanionic phosphate is introduced into iron oxalate to regulate intrinsic lattice dynamics and accelerate bulk lithium-ion transport.
