Improved dielectric properties and anti-reducing mechanism of Er/Mg Co-doped BaTiO3-based ceramics produced in reducing atmosphere

Manting Zeng,Xingzhong Liu,Hua Hao,Zhonghua Yao,Hanxing Liu

BaTiO 3 -1.6MnO 2 - x Er 2 O 3 ceramics (abbreviated as BMT- x Er) and BaTiO 3 -1.6MnO 2 -3Er 2 O 3 - x MgO ceramics (abbreviated as BEMT- x Mg) were prepared under a reducing atmosphere by solid-state synthesis method in this work. The effects of Er/Mg co-doping on phase transformation, microstructure, dielectric properties, and defect were systematically investigated. Research shows that Er-doping reduces the Curie temperature and increases the dielectric constant of BaTiO 3 ceramics at low temperatures. Mg-doping refines the grain size and makes the grain size distribution more uniform, which is an important reason for the enhanced bias stability. The substitution of Mg at the B-site generates additional oxygen vacancies which capture free electrons and simultaneously forms defect dipoles. The anti-reducing properties are improved by reducing the carrier concentration. The synergistic effect of co-doping forms defect dipoles such as [ Mg Ti ″ ‐ 2 Er Ba ∙ ] , [ Mg Ti ″ ‐ V O ∙ ∙ ] and [ 2 Er Ti ′ ‐ V O ∙ ∙ ] to enhance dielectric relaxation behavior which is considered to be the reason for the improved dielectric temperature stability. When x  = 0.4, optimized dielectric ceramics are obtained with ε 25°C  = 1820, tanδ = 0.009, resistivity of 1.0 × 10 11  Ω·cm, which meets the EIA X7R standard (−55 °C - 125 °C, TCC ≤ ± 15 %).

Boosting the hydrogen storage performance of Mg-rich quaternary alloy hydrides via in-situ evolution of bidirectional catalytic phases

Ruijie Liu,Xinhao Jiang,Xinqiang Wang,Zhenglong Li,Xiaoying Yang,Jingbo Chen,Yanxia Liu,Wengang Cui,Fan Gao,Yong Gao,Fulai Qi,Chao Zheng,Mingchang Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Jian Miao,Lixian Sun,Jian Chen

Although Mg alloy-based hydrides have been considered as promising solid-state materials due to their high capacity and low cost, the high dehydrogenation temperature of ∼ 300℃ severely limited their practical application. Herein, a series of Mg-based quaternary alloys of Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 M 5 (M = Al, Zn, Co, La) hydrides were prepared by a combination of meltspinning and ball milling process, demonstrating an efficient approach to promoting the hydrogen storage properties. Among them, the Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 hydride (H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 ) as the most excellent one starts to release hydrogen from 175℃, 125℃ lower than that of MgH 2 . Especially, the peak hydrogen release temperature of H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 was remarkedly reduced from 347℃ to 253℃, compared with MgH 2 . Additionally, the H-Mg 85 Ni 5 Cu 5 La 5 presented an impressive initial hydrogen capacity of 4.2 wt% with a high-capacity retention of 92.6 % over 10 dehydrogenation cycles. In/Ex-situ XRD analyses proved that the synergistic effects of in-situ formed metallic Ni and LaH 2 catalytic phases during the milling and ab/desorption processes can simultaneously enhance the ab/desorption kinetics of Mg/MgH 2 . That is, the LaH 2 can act as a hydrogen pump to promote the dehydrogenation of hydrides, while the Ni is beneficial to accelerate the dissociation of metal-hydrogen atoms and the formation of hydrogen molecules on the surface of Mg alloy. These findings highlight the potential of multicomponent Mg-based alloys for practical use in solid-state hydrogen storage systems through in-situ formed catalytic phases.

Ni/Mg Dual Concentration-Gradient Surface Modification to Enhance Structural Stability and Electrochemical Performance of Li-Rich Layered Oxides

Guanghui Cong,Lujun Huang,Guobo Yang,Jinpeng Song,Shaoshuai Liu,Yating Huang,Xin Zhang,Zheyuan Liu,Lin Geng

Li-rich layered oxides (LRLOs), with the advantages of high specific capacity and low cost, are considered as candidates for the next-generation cathode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, sluggish kinetics and interfacial degradation lead to capacity loss and voltage decay of the material during cycling. To address these issues, we propose a Ni/Mg dual concentration-gradient modification strategy for LRLOs. From the center to the surface of the modified materials, the contents of Ni and Mg are gradually increased while the content of Mn is decreased. The high Ni content on the surface increases the proportion of cationic redox, elevating the operating voltage and accelerating reaction kinetics. Moreover, the doped Mg on the surface of the material acting as a stabilizing pillar suppresses the migration of transition metals, stabilizing the layered structure. Therefore, the material with the Ni/Mg dual concentration-gradients delivers a superior electrochemical performance, exhibiting a suppressed voltage decay of 2.8 mV per cycle during 200 cycles (1 C, 2–4.8 V) and an excellent rate capability of 94.84 mAh/g at 7C. This study demonstrates a synergic design to construct high-performance LRLO cathode materials for LIBs.

Revealing a hidden superpower: Sulfur doping triggers reconstruction of MnCr LDH for efficient water splitting and Mg/seawater batteries

Chaoen Li,Ziyu Zhang,Li Che,YuYang Zhou,Honglin Gao,Hanjie Sun,Aiyi Dong

Electrolyzing seawater presents a promising strategy to address the energy crisis. The optimally sulfur-doped S 0.45 -MnCr layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst demonstrates exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in alkaline seawater at 50 °C, requiring overpotentials of only 57.9 mV and 245.4 mV to achieve 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. For overall seawater splitting, it requires only 1.72 V to deliver 100 mA cm −2 . When used as a cathode in a magnesium-seawater batteries (MSBs), it delivers a power density of 7.80 mW cm −2 . Sulfur doping simultaneously triggers the formation of highly active MnCO 3 during synthesis. Characterization confirms that sulfur doping promotes chromium leaching, thereby enlarging the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA). In situ XRD analysis at various potentials verifies the formation of additional active MnCO 3 species during HER, consistent with the activity enhancement observed in chronopotentiometric measurements. This work offers novel insights for designing bifunctional catalysts for direct seawater electrolysis.

Synergistic Interaction between Saturated MgCl2–H2O/PEG Electrolyte and Mg Alloy Anode Enables High-Performance Aqueous Magnesium-Ion Batteries

Wendi Lai,Caixing Wang,Rui Fang,Kanghui Liu,Wei Yang,Guowang Diao,Yanrong Wang

Compared to conventional organic electrolytes, aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (AMIBs) have emerged as a research hotspot due to their superior safety, environmental compatibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, the further development of AMIBs has been impeded by their short cycling lifespan, primarily caused by the aqueous corrosion of Mg anodes in water-containing electrolytes, which generates inorganic passivation layers (e.g., Mg(OH)2 and MgO) on the anode surface. To address this challenge, we propose a collaborative two-pronged approach, involving the adoption of a novel electrolyte system (saturated MgCl2 aqueous solution containing 25 vol % PEG, SMP-3) and the use of a Mg alloy anode. Electrochemical investigations suggest that the PEG molecules form hydrogen bonds with H2O molecules, effectively suppressing water activity and thereby enhancing anode stability. The assembled PTO/Mg alloy full cell exhibited a stable discharge plateau at 1.5 V with an initial discharge capacity of 176.24 mAh g–1 at 200 mA g–1. Remarkably, the cell demonstrated exceptional cycling stability, maintaining a capacity of 150 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles (85% capacity retention), with an average Coulombic efficiency approaching 100%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of stabilizing Mg alloy anodes through an interfacial engineering strategy based on a water-in-salt electrolyte design. This strategic approach provides a novel pathway for developing low-cost, high-performance AMIBs.

Mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of powder metallurgical Mg-Zn-Ca/Fe bulk metal glass composites for biomedical application

Kun Li,Luxin Liang,Peng Du,Zeyun Cai,Tao Xiang,Hiroyasu Kanetaka,Hong Wu,Guoqiang Xie

Magnesium (Mg) alloys can be regarded as the most promising biodegradable implant materials for orthopedic and stent applications due to their good biocompatibility and low Young's modulus which is near to that of natural bone. However, its applicability is hindered because it exhibits a high corrosion rate in the physiological environments. In this work, we fabricated Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 /Fe bulk metallic glass composites via spark plasma sintering (SPS). We studied the influence of different contents of Fe on the properties of the composites. The results indicated that Fe was uniformly distributed on the surface of Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 metallic glass (MG) as a second phase, which led to an improvement in the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. The standard potential of Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 /Fe bulk metallic glass (BMG) composites increased as compared to Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 , while their mechanical strength improved from 355 MPa to 616 MPa. Furthermore, cytotoxicity was investigated via the CCK-8 assay and calcein-AM staining, which revealed that the extraction mediums diluted 6 times (EM × 6) of the Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 and Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 /Fe did not cause cell toxicity on day 3 and 5, while the EM × 6 of the Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 showed cytotoxicity on day 1, 3 and 5. Thus, Mg 66 Zn 30 Ca 4 /Fe BMG composites exhibit significant potential for fabricating implants with good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Fabrication of cellulose@Mg(OH)2 composite filter via interfacial bonding and its trapping effect for heavy metal ions

Nian-Dan Zhao,Yan Wang,Xiao-Hang Zou,Wei-Ming Yin,Xin-Yu Wang,Yuan-Ru Guo,Qing-Jiang Pan

The utilization of renewable biomass cellulose in treating pollution of heavy metal ions (HMIs) is one of overarching and appealing strategies, because it simultaneously satisfies sustainable development and resolves ever-increasing environmental issue. In this regard, the composite cellulose@Mg(OH) 2 was prepared via a facile method and explored for its use as water treatment agent. It is demonstrated that the smaller and thinner hexagonal Mg(OH) 2 flakes are constructed onto the cellulose substrate by self-assembling; two components are chemically coupled via hydrogen bonds and Mg-O c (cellulose oxygen) dative bonds; what’s more, the coupling of cellulose with Mg(OH) 2 (1   0   1) facet is much more preferential than with (0   0   1) facet. The resultant composite material shows remarkable HMI removal performance: large capacities of 734.9, 595.8 and 1473.1 mg g −1 for Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ , respectively. Further assisted by good shaping property of the cellulose substrate, the composite is capable of being made into filter, which practically separates HMIs and purifies wastewater with high removal efficiency (99.99%) for Cd 2+ even after operating for 110 days and potable water can be obtained. The mechanism is delineated with removal models and characterizations of HMI-recovered products.

Multifunctional Ni–Mg bimetal-activated Zn(O,S) for hydrogen generation and environmental remediation with simulated solar-light irradiation

Hairus Abdullah,Hardy Shuwanto,Dong-Hau Kuo

A Ni–Mg bimetal-doped Zn(O,S) photocatalyst has been synthesized, characterized, and tested for several photocatalytic applications. The hydrogen generation reaction, hydrogenation reaction for chemical transformation, detoxification of hexavalent chromium, and mixed dye (MB + RhB + MO) degradation under simulated solar-light illumination were confirmed. The essential characterization results indicated improved oxygen vacancy sites on the catalyst with enhanced photoresponse, better photocarrier separation, and facile charge transfer properties. A typical catalyst, NMZ-S10, was evaluated with a 1000-cycle CV test to demonstrate its long-term use for industrial application. Stable reusability experiments for the HER, PHR, PHC reaction, and PDM also supported the long-term application. The photocatalytic HER of NMZ-S10 could evolve hydrogen at a rate of 4000 μmol g−1 h−1. 30 ppm azobenzene-to-aniline conversion was completely done in 2 h of reaction. Detoxification of 30 ppm hexavalent chromium was conducted in 70 min of reaction. Finally, 10.5 ppm MB–RhB–MO mixed dye degradation was carried out in 1 h of reaction. The as-synthesized NMZ-S10 catalyst has demonstrated its capability to overcome energy and environmental issues promisingly. The great photocatalytic activities are discussed and elucidated with a plausible mechanism to rationalize the superb catalytic performance.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Composites with Magnesium Aluminum Hydrotalcite Derived Metal Oxides and g-C3N4

Yu Mingwei,Zhang Lianhong,Wen Jie,Zhang Hui,Liu Faping,Lv Yanjun,Zhao Xiaodong

The remove of the organic pollutants in water plays an important role on the environmental protection, thus photocatalysis, as an effective method, has been attained much attention to deal with this problem. In this paper, a composite of g-C 3 N 4 and Mg–Al hydrotalcite derived metal oxides was prepared by simple co-precipitation methods followed by calcination. The effective adsorption-photocatalysis synergic effect and highly efficient removal of organic pollutants from water under simulated sunlight irradiation was found in the presence of fabricated metal oxide nanocomposites. The photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue reached 97.3% within 1 h under visible light, and the degradation rate constant was 0.0432 min −1 , which is 3.6 times that of g-C 3 N 4 . Though characterization analysis, more active sites are exposed to absorb more organic pollutants on the mater surface in the presence of the open hierarchical structures of composite materials, and the "face to face" contact structure between 2D materials is formed to promote the separation of electrons and holes. The photocatalytic degradation was stable in the recycling process of the catalyst. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of the catalyst was explained by free radical scavenging experiment. The material provides an effective method for removing organic pollutants in water, and has broad application prospects.

Oxidative coupling of methane: MOx-modified (M = Ti, Mg, Ga, Zr) Mn2O3-Na2WO4/SiO2 catalysts and effect of MOx modification

Pengwei Wang,Xin Zhang,Guofeng Zhao,Ye Liu,Yong Lu

Mn 2 O 3 -Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 is considered as the most promising catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) process; however, it only has a better catalytic performance over 800 °C. To improve its low-temperature performance, an attempt has been made to modify the Mn 2 O 3 -Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst using TiO 2 , MgO, Ga 2 O 3 , and ZrO 2 . Among the synthesized catalysts, the TiO 2 -modified Mn 2 O 3 -Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst shows markedly improved low-temperature OCM performance, achieving a high CH 4 conversion of ~23% and a good C 2 -C 3 selectivity of ~73% at 700 °C (the catalyst bed temperature), along with promising stability for at least 300 h without signs of deactivation. In comparison with the unmodified Mn 2 O 3 -Na 2 WO 4 /SiO 2 catalyst, the TiO 2 modification results in significant improvement in the low-temperature activity/selectivity, whereas the MgO modification has almost no impact and the Ga 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 modifications have a negative effect. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman results reveal that the formation of a MnTiO 3 phase and a MnTiO 3 -dominated catalyst surface is crucial for the improvement of the low-temperature activity/selectivity in the OCM process.

Investigation of coherent interface on relaxation behavior and reliability of Mg-doped BaTiO3 dielectric ceramics: Experiments and first-principle calculations

Zhourui Zhang,Xiong Huang,Jun Yang,Jianwei Zhao,Zhenxiao Fu,Xiuhua Cao,Lei Zhang,Shuhui Yu,Rong Sun

The addition of Mg generally enhances the high-temperature stability and reliability of BaTiO 3 -based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Herein, a series of Mg-doped BaTiO 3 -based ceramics and ultra-thin MLCCs were successfully fabricated, and the coherent and semi-coherent interface has been observed in samples. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement in temperature stability is due to changes in the coherent interface and electronic structure that promote the formation of polar nano-regions (PNRs) and induce relaxation behavior. Based on the atomic displacement, it is found that the excess substitution released the coherent stresses in the form of defects and formed semi-coherent interfaces. The reliability degradation of MLCCs is mainly due to the evolution of the semi-coherent interfaces. This work points out an avenue to obtain high-temperature stability and high reliability in BaTiO 3 -based MLCCs.

The substitution of NaMgH3 for MgH2 greatly enhancing the hydrogen storage performance and mechanism of Li-Mg-N-H system

Chia-Tse Lee,Haoyuan Zheng,Chen Jin,Hang Che,Li Wang,Yuyuan Zhao,Shixuan He,Xinhua Wang,Yifeng Yu,Mi Yan

Metal nitrogen hydride (Li-Mg-N-H) is regarded as an ideal hydrogen storage material for automotive applications due to its advantages of high hydrogen storage capacity (5.6 wt%), low operating temperature, and good cycling performance, but the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of this material still could be improved. For this reason, this paper constructed a Li-Na-Mg-N-H composite system by synthesizing NaMgH 3 to replace MgH 2 in the Li-Mg-N-H system. The improvement of the hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of the composite system after the replacement of MgH 2 by NaMgH 3 was investigated. Various properties and test results showed that the composite system after the replacement of MgH 2 by NaMgH 3 showed better hydrogen absorption and desorption properties. The initial/peak hydrogen release temperatures of Li-Na-Mg-N-H decreased from 135 ˚C/245 ˚C to 105 ˚C/145 ˚C, and the apparent activation energy of hydrogen release was reduced from 114.90 to 104.05 kJ/mol which means the kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption was greatly improved. The mechanism study shows that NaMgH 3 will react with LiNH 2 and forms the intermediate product Li 3 Na(NH 2 ) 4 during the hydrogen release process, which changes the hydrogen desorption pathway of the composite system and thus the hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics were improved.
