Cancer theranostics urgently demands multifunctional nanomaterials capable of simultaneously enabling high-sensitivity imaging and multimodal synergistic therapy. In this study, a three-layer core–shell nanocomposite, NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaGdF4:Eu@NH2-MIL-53(Fe), was designed and synthesized. The NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticle core provides upconversion luminescence upon near-infrared (NIR) excitation and can serve as an excitation source for photodynamic therapy. An epitaxially grown NaGdF4:Eu intermediate shell was introduced to enhance luminescence and provide T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability. The outermost NH2-MIL-53(Fe) metal–organic framework shell was subsequently coated to provide potential chemodynamic therapy (CDT) capability. The effects of the Eu3+doping concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and oleic acid (OA)/1-octadecene (ODE) ratio on the anisotropic growth into a dumbbell-like morphology were examined to determine the optimal conditions. Under the optimal conditions (10 mol% Eu3+, 300 °C, 60 min, OA/ODE = 4:16), core–shell nanocrystals with regular morphology, uniform size, and the strongest upconversion luminescence were obtained. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-mediated surface functionalization successfully induced the in situ growth of the NH2-MIL-53(Fe) outer shell, thereby constructing a three-layer core–shell nanocomposite as a potential theranostic platform. Various characterizations confirmed that the resulting composite integrates upconversion luminescence, paramagnetism, and hydroxyl radical generation capability, suggesting potential for NIR-driven dual-modal imaging-guided synergistic therapy.

To address the low Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling efficiency of Fe-based catalysts during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, this study successfully constructed a MIL-101(Fe)/WS 2 composite catalytic material. The results show that the MW 1:1 composite exhibits excellent performance toward PMS activation. By leveraging the cooperative effect of dual-metal cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and W 4+ /W 6+ , as well as unsaturated sulfur vacancies, it achieves 97% phenol degradation within 60 min, with a reaction constant of 0.1038 min −1 , which is approximately 110 times that of single MIL-101(Fe) and WS 2 . The effects of key operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH value and coexisting anions on phenol degradation efficiency were systematically evaluated. Through in-depth radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy analysis, it was clearly identified that sulfate radical ( SO 4 ∙ − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main active oxide species driving the degradation reaction. Furthermore, this study further elucidated the degradation means of phenol, proclaimed the reaction mechanisation, and evaluated the ecological toxicity of phenol and its intermediate products using the ECOSAR model. This work provides new insights for constructing efficient iron-based catalysts to activate PMS and promoting its application in the control of refractory organic pollutants.

The extensive use of ciprofloxacin (CIP) has raised growing concerns regarding environmental pollution, food safety, and public health, thereby driving an urgent demand for rapid, sensitive and cost-effective detection methods. Herein, an electrochemical sensing platform is constructed by integrating MIL-101(Fe) with MWCNTs-COOH, which synergistically couples the effective analyte preconcentration and catalytic Fe–O active sites of MIL-101(Fe) with the exceptional conductivity and large surface area of MWCNTs-COOH. Notably, the reversible Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycle in MIL-101(Fe) facilitates rapid electron shuttling, further amplifying the electrochemical signal toward CIP oxidation. This dual-functional interface enables simultaneous preconcentration and signal amplification, yielding a broad linear response spanning 0.05–15 μM, accompanied by a high sensitivity of 5.6492 μA·μM −1 , as well as an ultralow LOD of 0.006 μM. Additionally, this sensor also demonstrates outstanding selectivity, good repeatability, excellent reproducibility, and durable stability, retaining approximately 96.1% of its initial current signal after 21 days of storage. Furthermore, to rigorously validate practical feasibility, acceptable recoveries between 92.9% and 105.3% were measured in honey, tap water, and CIP eye drops, demonstrating its versatility across food, environmental, and pharmaceutical matrices. Overall, this work establishes a design blueprint for high-performance electrochemical sensors based on MIL-series MOF/carbon composites, opening new avenues for rapid, on-site antibiotic monitoring to ensure food safety, environmental protection, and pharmaceutical quality control.

Tetracycline is one of the most widely used broad-spectrum antibiotics, and its continuous release into aquatic environments has become a serious environmental concern. Although metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential for photocatalytic wastewater treatment, conventional synthesis methods generally suffer from long reaction times and limited capability for controllable defect engineering. To address these challenges, a needle–plate pulsed discharge plasma strategy was developed for the direct synthesis of MIL-53(Fe). The effects of key plasma discharge parameters on the structure, defect structure, and photocatalytic performance of MIL-53(Fe) were investigated. Under the optimized conditions (6.2 kV, 120 min, an FeCl 3 /TPA molar ratio of 1:1, and Ar atmosphere), the obtained MIL-53(Fe) catalyst achieved an average tetracycline degradation efficiency of 91.57% within 120 min. Structural and photoelectrochemical analyses revealed that the obtained MIL-53(Fe) exists plasma-induced oxygen-vacancy-related defects while preserving the crystal framework of MIL-53(Fe). These defects promoted the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby significantly enhancing the photocatalytic activity under xenon-lamp irradiation. These findings demonstrate that needle–plate pulsed discharge provides an effective strategy for the controllable synthesis of defect-regulated MIL-53(Fe), offering new opportunities for developing high-performance photocatalysts for antibiotic-contaminated wastewater treatment.

The treatment of dye-containing oil-in-water emulsions remains challenging due to membrane fouling and limited operational stability. In this study, amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) NH 2 -MIL-125 was incorporated into polysulfone (PSF) membranes via phase inversion to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for oil-in-water emulsion separation and light-assisted self-cleaning. The separation test was conducted at 0.2 MPa using an as-prepared sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-stabilized n-hexane-in-water emulsion containing 1.0 vol% oil. Compared with pristine PSF, the optimized PN0.5 membrane showed a decrease in water contact angle (WCA) from 67.5 ± 2.0° to 22.7 ± 2.4° and an increase in underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) from 73.0 ± 2.3° to 140.0 ± 2.6°, confirming enhanced hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. PN0.5 achieved a permeate flux of approximately 245 L·m⁻ 2 ·h⁻ 1 and a separation efficiency close to 99%. Moreover, PN0.5 maintained approximately 98% separation efficiency during a seven-day cyclic filtration test. In a separate antifouling test, the membrane exhibited a low irreversible fouling ratio of 3.79%. Under irradiation with a 300 W xenon lamp for 60 min, the NH 2 -MIL-125-containing membrane promoted methylene blue (MB) decolorization and dye-foulant removal, while the irreversible fouling ratio remained low at 3.98% for the MB-containing emulsion after light-assisted self-cleaning. These results demonstrate the potential of NH 2 -MIL-125/PSF mixed-matrix membranes for treating dye-containing oily wastewater.

With the increasing threat antimony (Sb) pollution poses to the environment, its removal from water is becoming increasingly important. Accordingly, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are garnering increasing research attention owing to their excellent performance as adsorbents. Here, the MOF MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 was prepared directly by solvothermal synthesis. Sb(III) adsorption using MIL- 101(Cr)-NH 2 was evaluated systematically at varying adsorbent dosages and pHs. And the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were explored by altering the contact time, initial Sb(III) concentration, and temperature, respectively. The results revealed that Sb(III) was adsorbed onto MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 very quickly, even at low antimony concentrations. The maximum Sb(III) adsorption capacity of MIL-101-NH 2 is 83.61 mg g -1 . In the presence of coexisting ion (NO 3 - ), the amount of Sb(III) adsorbed was slightly increased, which may be due to the formation of an inner-sphere complex. The Box–Behnken method was used to design and optimize a response surface with reference to three main influencing factors, that is, dosage, pH, and temperature, so as to obtain a multivariate quadratic model of adsorption behavior and identify the optimal adsorption conditions. Finally, a preliminary economic analysis of the synthetic material was carried out.

A novel dual Z-scheme BiOBr/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 (BNG) heterojunction was constructed via a simple two-step solvothermal process. NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) nanoparticles and BiOBr microspheres were uniformly deposited on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 . The prepared BNG exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance for tetracycline (TC) degradation compared to single catalyst. The optimized BNG-19 composite (with 19% NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe)/g-C 3 N 4 ) achieved 92.38% degradation of TC within 75 min under visible light, which was 2.47, 1.78, and 1.84 times higher than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 , NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe), and BiOBr, respectively. Moreover, the composite exhibited excellent stability with 82.4% removal efficiency after five cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the synergistic dual Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was directly evidenced by in-situ irradiated XPS showing opposite directional shifts of Bi 4f (positive) and Fe 2p/N 1s (negative). This unique charge transfer pathway effectively promoted the separation of photogenerated carriers, with •OH and •O 2 ⁻ identified as the dominant reactive species. This work provides a new strategy for constructing g-C 3 N 4 -based dual Z-scheme heterostructures with direct mechanistic evidence for efficient environmental remediation.

The pervasive toxicity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to aquatic life and humans urgently demands integrated platforms capable of simultaneous detection and remediation. Herein, a bifunctional platform (CMC/PEI/MIL-53(Fe)/Nap/CP) capable of simultaneous fluorescence detection and photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) was constructed by in situ growing MIL-53(Fe) on a carboxymethyl cellulose/polyethylenimine (CMC/PEI) matrix grafted with naphthalimide and combining it with cellulose paper (CP). In situ growth ensures the uniform dispersion of active sites, while the paper-based design enhances processability and recyclability. The protonated amino groups of PEI enrich Cr(VI) through electrostatic interactions, while MIL-53(Fe) provides photocatalytic active sites through the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox cycle. Due to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis, the removal efficiency reached 99% within 5 h, with a reduction rate of 96%, following pseudo-first-order kinetics (k = 0.9119 h–1). Compared to other recent studies, it offers an excellent removal performance. At the same time, the enrichment effect of PEI enhanced the interaction between Cr(VI) and the naphthalimide fluorophore, achieving a detection limit of 0.34 μM and a KSV of 8.73 × 103 M–1. The good selectivity for Cr(VI) was theoretically verified through simulations by using Materials Studio software (MS). This platform provides a practical bifunctional platform for efficient fluorescence detection and removal of Cr(VI), with broad application prospects in the fields of environmental monitoring and water treatment.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) possess excellent post-modification characteristics, high specific surface area, diversity of skeleton composition and pore tunability, have been increasingly applied in membrane modifications. In this work, NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88B) was first fixed onto polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by polyethyleneimine (PEI) through a vacuum-assisted self-assembly process, and the deposited NM88B was subsequently grafted with perfluoroalkyl polyethoxyacetic acid (FPEOAA) via a condensation reaction to realize the surface modifications. The modified membranes (named as N1F x ) showed improved hydrophilicity and underwater-oleophobicity. In addition, very high pure water flux (up to 9403 L‧m −2 ‧h −1 ) was obtained for the N1F x membranes due to the high porosity of introduced NM88B. In the dead-end filtration experiments of n -hexadecane-water emulsion, the optimum membrane N1F20 showed a good oil rejection rate (98.3%) and high permeation flux (667 L‧m −2 ‧h −1 ) which is approximately seven times of the pure PVDF membrane, indicating that the surface-modified membranes had excellent permeability and good separation performance. Even after four filtration cycles of oil-water emulsion, the rejection rate maintained higher than 97%, showing good reusability. Furthermore, the study found that N1F20 had certain acid and alkaline resistance and great potential for engineering applications.

A heterostructured MIL-101(Fe)/Ce/g-C 3 N 4 (MCCN) composite was designed and synthesized by solvothermal method . The composite was characterized by XRD , SEM, EDS , FT-IR, BET, XPS , UV–Vis DRS , PL and EIS. The MCCN photocatalyst exhibits superior photocatalytic performance for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB), and the efficiencies are found to be 90.36% and 88.17%, respectively. The kinetic constants k of MCCN-3 against RhB and MB dyes are 0.04094 min −1 and 0.03319 min −1 , respectively, under visible light for 75 min irradiation. The improved degradation efficiency of MCCN attributed to the enhanced light absorption and the transport channels of electron-hole pairs by forming a heterojunction between MIL-101(Fe) and Ce/g-C 3 N 4 with a favourable band position. Moreover, the possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of dyes was proposed though free radical trapping experiments. This work provides an effective way for constructing novel visible-light-driven photocatalyst in the removal of organic molecules from waste water .

Herein, a novel core-shell material Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized for developing a novel LFIA by a two-step solvothermal method with good magnetic properties and high specific surface area. It was used as both magnetic separation and label agents in LFIA for the detection of Listeria monocytogenes . The enrichment of target bacteria can be achieved quickly and easily by direct adsorption of Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe) on the bacteria and by the action of an applied magnetic field. It was beneficial in separation and concentration of target bacteria from food samples. The Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe)-bacterial was then detected by the anti- Listeria monocytogenes antibody on the T line under the capillary action of the LFIA strip, resulting in the formation of a visible orange band. Under the optimal conditions, there was a good linear relationship between the intensity of the T line and the quantity of Listeria monocytogenes in the range of 10 5 -10 8 CFU mL − 1 , with a visual detection limit of 3.3 × 10 6 CFU mL − 1 . The strip showed strong specificity for L. monocytogenes , and the detection could be finished in 45 min, without the needing of pre-treatment. Thus, the proposed Fe 3 O 4 @MIL-100(Fe)-based strip was simple prepared, label-free, low cost, rapid and convenience.

Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (As)-contaminated water seriously threatens human health. Although iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for arsenic removal have been developed, their practical application has been challenging due to their lack of binding sites and low stability. In this study, we attempted to improve the arsenic adsorption capacity of MIL-101(Fe) in water by amine functionalization. NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) was synthesized using a facile solvothermal method. It adsorbed > 70 % arsenate (As (V)) throughout a wide pH range of 4–9, exhibited high anti-interference ability and reusability, and effectively eliminated arsenic from contaminated river samples, demonstrating its great potential in As-polluted water treatment . Best adsorption effectiveness at pH 7 indicated that the electrostatic attraction between -NH 2 and As (V) was not its primary adsorption mechanism. Instead, FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the complexation between Fe and As was the key mechanism. NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) had substantially better As (V) and arsenite (As (III)) adsorption capacities (147.7 mg/g and 153.4 mg/g, respectively) than MIL-101(Fe) (82.8 mg/g and 131.2 mg/g, respectively). This is because amine modification increased the Fe content and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ratio, as well as the specific surface area and pore volume. This research elucidates how amine modification affects the ability of Fe-MOFs to adsorb arsenic.
