Gel casting faces challenges like low strength, non-uniformity and long cycles in making large fused silica parts. To address these issues, this study addresses challenges by introducing a composite reinforcement system of silica fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The system enhances the green body strength, shortens the processing time, and improves the axial uniformity of the material through multi-scale synergistic effects. Specifically, PVA enhances particle connectivity and green body stiffness through chemical bonding, while silica fibers form a 3D network for physical toughening. This multi-scale interaction increases green body flexural strength to 1254.6 kPa, 2.8 times that of the unreinforced system. Silica fibers also create micro-channels that accelerate moisture diffusion, shortening drying time. Fibers anchor with PVA to construct a 3D network that blocks large-particle sedimentation, homogenizing nanoparticle distribution. These effects collectively reduce axial variations in specific surface area and porosity, enabling uniform composition and density from slurry to sintered body. After sintering optimization (1350°C, 30 min), excellent fiber-nanoparticle integration is achieved, producing a fused silica component with a 4:1 aspect ratio, high axial density uniformity, and over 90% optical transmittance. A decimeter-scale fused silica compound eye lens with precise imaging capability was successfully fabricated, demonstrating the system’s practical potential.

As the core component of wearable electronic devices, flexible energy storage materials play an irreplaceable role. At present, it is still a challenge to prepare flexible electrode materials with high energy density. In this paper, a polyaniline-based composite flexible conductive hydrogel (PPG-P) with a two-level conductive network is successfully prepared by a secondary induced assembly in situ polymerization method. The special conductive structure greatly promotes the efficiency of charge transfer and the utilization of electroactive substances, so that PPG-P exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. In a three-electrode system, PPG-P has a mass-specific capacitance as high as 989 F g −1 (0.5 A g −1 ). After 1000 charge and discharge cycles, the capacitance retention is 87%. Symmetrical flexible supercapacitors based on PPG-P have high specific capacitance (176 F g −1 /0.5 A g −1 ) and high energy density (15.6 Wh kg −1 ). After 1000 cycles of constant current charge and discharge, the capacitance maintains 78.1%. The preparation of PPG-P with a hierarchical structure demonstrates the possibility of achieving high energy density in flexible electrode materials, which has great application potential in the development of energy storage elements in wearable devices.

The white pollution caused by non-degradable plastics poses a serious threat to human society and the environment, thus developing biodegradable material is urgent. In this work, a novel phosphonitrile hybrid metal-polyphenol network was constructed and used for the preparation of flame retardant , UV resistant and antibacterial multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol composite (PVA@HCPD-Ag). The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of PVA@HCPD-Ag was improved to 33.5%, while the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased by 35.62% and 47.76%. Besides, the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) value of PVA@HCPD-Ag was significantly improved from 4.63 of the original PVA to 482.79, while the tensile strength was increased by 10.23%. Furthermore, the inhibition efficacy of PVA@HCPD-Ag for E. coli and S. aureus was up to 98.12% and 99.99%. This work explored the synergistic flame retardant effect of in-situ reduced Ag 0 and phosphonitrile crosslinked polyphenol network and proposed an advanced strategy for developing high value-added functionalized PVA materials.

Hydrogels have attracted extensive attention for their promising applications as flexible sensors. Developing conductive hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties still remains a significant challenge. Herein, double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) are prepared through repetitive freezing/thawing process. The hydrogels are further treated with Fe3+ ions to enhance the mechanical properties due to the complexation between carboxyl groups and Fe3+ ions. The influence of the amount of PILs and concentration of Fe3+ on mechanical properties and conductivity is investigated. The optimal DN hydrogel P(VMCA-AA)1/PVA-Fe3+4 shows excellent mechanical properties, whose tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness are 2.2 MPa, 350%, and 3.5 MJ m−3, respectively. P(VMCA-AA)1/PVA-Fe3+4 also displays a good conductivity of 1.04 S m−1. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates a high sensing sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) of 3.36, indicating its application potential as a flexible sensor.

Hydrophilic mesoporous silica aerogel particles were synthesized via self-assembly of amphiphilic polymer (Ph8-PEG6-PEOS) and its instantaneous hydrolysis and condensation in the alkaline environment. Meanwhile, the capture and encapsulation of flame retardant (IPPP) and oil soluble dyes were successively completed during the two processes above. Observed by thermal field scanning electron microscopy (TFESEM), the average diameter of aerogel particles reached about 10 µm. BET surface area analysis displayed that the existence of oil-phase component (IPPP) can result in the expansion of pore diameter, and promote the evolution of mesopores into macropores. Then, IPPP@SiO 2 aerogel particles were utilized to improve the flame retardancy of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coatings implemented onto cotton yarns, by employing developed knife coating procedure in an aqueous suspension. The thermal stabilities and flammability behaviors of the samples were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and vertical burning test, respectively. Both thermal decomposition temperature and LOI value of coating composites gradually increased with the increment of IPPP@SiO 2 -n ( n = 10, 30, 50, 70), attaching to the synchronous advancement in stretching property. Furthermore, coatings were thickened by degrees from 0.4 to 4 mm, based on knife coating in multi-stage layer-by-layer mode, to build an ordered porous structure with the assisted adhesion of PVA. The following sintering preserved the close packing of silica aerogel particles and facilitated the formation of a coherent porous monolithic material with excellent thermal insulation performance. In this research, centrifugally spun ultrafine composite starch/polyvinyl alcohol (ST/PVA) fibers with high water stability were prepared by cross-linking with a mixture of glutaraldehyde and formic acid in the form of vapor phase. The effect of cross-linking temperature combined with time on the water stability, crystal structure, and thermal properties of fibers was investigated to obtain the optimum parameters. On this basis, we further prepared Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers with different contents of nano silver. The structure and properties of Ag-loaded fibers, which cross-linked under the optimum parameters, were analyzed. As a result, the Ag-loaded fibers exhibited excellent water stability and mechanical properties and possessed inhibition zone diameters of 3 and 2 mm to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus. aureus, respectively. The antibacterial property of the Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers provided a new route for developing less costly antibacterial fiber materials in the future.

Conventional poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels struggle to integrate the mechanical robustness, thermal management, and fire safety demanded by extreme environments. To overcome this, we fabricate a multifunctional hydrogel via a synergistic strategy combining freeze–thawing and citrate-driven Hofmeister salting-out. Kosmotropic citrate ions aggressively strip polymer hydration shells, driving intense intermolecular hydrogen bonding, elevated crystallinity, and severe network densification. Consequently, the optimized cit@PVA hydrogel exhibits a balanced mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of 1.31 MPa and an elongation at break of approximately 150%. The citrate-induced network densification not only reinforces the mechanical integrity of the hydrogel but also regulates its thermal transport characteristics. Benefiting from the dense polymer framework and intrinsic infrared-active chemical structures, the cit@PVA hydrogel demonstrates excellent thermal management capability, including effective high-temperature thermal insulation and high mid-infrared emissivity (~85%) for passive radiative cooling. Furthermore, the incorporated citrate shifts the degradation pathway toward catalytic charring, rapidly forming a dense carbonaceous shield to completely prevent burn-through during direct flame exposure. This scalable structural design overcomes traditional performance limitations, creating resilient soft materials for advanced flexible electronics and smart protective wearables.

PAA-modified PVA TC-PNs enable confined cleaning of fragile celadon glaze surfaces. • pH-responsive network hydration modulates interfacial acid transport. • Freeze-derived pore morphology influences solute migration. • Open-pore transport and Ca retention help limit secondary CaSO₄ precipitation. • Mechanical adaptability enables conformal contact with irregular ceramic surfaces. Confining reactive agents at fragile solid–liquid interfaces while regulating mass transport remains a central challenge in surface cleaning. Marine-recovered archaeological ceramics exemplify this problem because calcareous bio-concretions mechanically interlock with microcracked glazes vulnerable to uncontrolled solvent penetration. Here, we developed pH-responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) twin-chain polymer network (TC-PN) hydrogels that couple interfacial reaction with pore-mediated transport. Freeze–thaw processing generated formulation-dependent porous morphologies, and citric acid enabled localized carbonate dissolution. SEM and FTIR analyses of pH-conditioned gels and wet-state mass measurements revealed pH-dependent carboxyl-group ionization and hydration, while low-field NMR identified composition-dependent water-proton relaxation environments. Results suggest that local PAA deprotonation and increased network hydration facilitate acid transport during CaCO 3 dissolution, whereas carbonate removal allows acid accumulation, which may lower interfacial pH and favor PAA reprotonation, thereby attenuating transport. Dye-front and directional-freezing experiments showed that freeze-derived morphology influenced solute transport. Alizarin Red S visualization supported migration of dissolved Ca species from the interface into the hydrogel. Formulations with more open and reticulated morphologies showed less extensive CaSO 4 -rich accumulation within the corrosion pits than the less interconnected reference formulation. Rheological and application tests demonstrated an elastic behavior ( G ′ > G ′ ′ ), reversible deformation, and conformal contact with curved, heterogeneous surfaces. On archaeological celadon, the TC-PN hydrogels removed calcareous bio-concretions, with no evident glaze alteration detected by either Raman spectroscopy or SEM–EDS within the examined regions. Integrating pH-responsive acid transport with pore-mediated migration and retention of dissolved Ca species therefore enables spatially confined cleaning of fragile heritage surfaces. BNNS/GO/PVA hybrid aerogel with 3D anisotropic network is fabricated by ice-templating. • HGBP/PW composite achieves 91.17% PW loading and 197.8 J/g melting enthalpy with 121.83% enthalpy efficiency. • Vertical thermal conductivity of HGBP5/PW is enhanced by 360% to 1.15 W/(m·K) vs pure PW. • HGBP5/PW realizes 97.80% photothermal conversion efficiency and 228.9 mV photo-thermal-electric output voltage. • HGBP/PW composite exhibits excellent shape stability and robust cycling durability with negligible leakage. Phase change materials (PCMs) are promising for solar thermal energy storage but suffer from leakage, low light absorption and thermal conductivity. Herein, a shape-stabilized composite PCM (HGBP/PW) was prepared by encapsulating paraffin wax (PW) into a BNNS/GO/PVA hybrid aerogel via ice-templating and vacuum impregnation. The 3D anisotropic network is constructed with GO as framework and photo-thermal absorber, BNNS for thermal conduction, and PVA as mechanical support. HGBP/PW exhibits 91.17% PW loading, a melting enthalpy of 197.8 J/g and 121.83% enthalpy efficiency. Its vertical thermal conductivity reaches 1.15 W/m·K, 360% higher than pure PW. It reduces LED chip temperature by 46.41%, shows 97.8% photo-thermal conversion efficiency and excellent cycling stability. Efficient solar-thermal-electric conversion is also achieved under simulated and natural sunlight, with a maximum output voltage of 228.9 mV and maintaining a reliable 118.2 mV output. This work offers a scalable strategy for multifunctional PCMs toward thermal management and efficient solar energy utilization.

Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films are limited by their low thermal stability and inherent flammability. In this work, a synergistic surface modification of montmorillonite (MMT) was achieved using phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) and isopropyl tri (dioctyl pyrophosphate) titanate (IPPTO) to produce co-modified nanofillers (IPMMT) that are uniformly dispersed within PVA, forming a hierarchical porous network. The dual modification transforms MMT from a slit-like structure into a mesoporous architecture while enhancing interfacial bonding via Si–O–C/Si–O–Si and Ti–O–M linkages. Compared with pristine PVA, the IPMMT–PVA nanocomposite exhibits dramatically improved thermal performance: the char yield exceeds 40% at 600 °C in air (vs. ∼1% for PVA), Td 20 rises from 293 °C to 377 °C, Td 30 from 312 °C to 506 °C, and the maximum mass-loss rate decreases by more than an order of magnitude. Infrared thermography further confirms superior heat-shielding capability, with the time to reach 200 °C prolonged to 52 s—an increase of 372.8% relative to pure PVA. Mechanistically, phenylsilane grafting enhances polymer stability below 300 °C and constructs low mesopores that confine volatile degradation products, while titanate modification yields in situ TiO 2 above 600 °C, forming an inorganic barrier and promoting char densification. This cooperative silane–titanate strategy provides an environmentally friendly route to high-performance, thermally insulating, and flame-retardant PVA materials.

Balancing high photoelectric response and flexible adaptability is a key research focus for MoS₂-based hydrogel photodetectors. In this study, a high-performance flexible MoS₂/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel photoelectrochemical (PEC) detector was successfully developed via constructing a synergistic dual network of hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds. Hydrogen bonds formed between MoS₂ nanosheets and PVA effectively inhibit nanosheet agglomeration, thereby establishing continuous pathways for photogenerated carrier transport. Dynamic borate ester bonds formed between PVA and borax endow the device with outstanding flexible adaptability, including excellent stretchability, self-healing capability, and bending stability. Experimental results show that under a bias of 0.7 V and illumination intensity of 120 mW cm −2 , the device achieves a photocurrent density of 2.114 μA cm −2 . After 300% tensile strain, the photocurrent density only decreases by 25.9% compared to the unstretched state. Stable photoresponse is maintained across bending angles from 0° to 60°, and approximately 96.7% of the photoelectric performance is recovered after self-healing. This work clarifies the correlation between bonding interactions and photoelectric performance in flexible photodetectors, providing a novel design strategy for hydrogel-based flexible optoelectronic devices.

Simultaneous sensing of pressure and temperature is essential
for
next-generation flexible electronics and electronic skin. However,
signal crosstalk between different stimuli and the reliance on complex
signal-processing circuits remain major challenges in multifunctional
sensor design. Herein, a self-decoupled flexible pressure–temperature
dual-modal sensor is developed by integrating a piezoresistive pressure-sensitive
layer composed of silicone rubber (SR) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes
(MWCNTs) with a thermoelectric temperature-sensitive layer based on
poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate
(PEDOT:PSS). Benefiting from the physical separation of the piezoresistive
and thermoelectric sensing mechanisms, pressure and temperature are
independently converted into resistance and voltage signals, respectively,
enabling intrinsic signal decoupling without additional signal-processing
circuits or postprocessing algorithms. The sensor exhibits favorable
pressure-sensing performance, including a high sensitivity of 16.999
kPa –1 (0–2.06 kPa), a wide detection range
of 0–103.31 kPa, fast response/recovery times (50 ms/50 ms),
and outstanding durability over 6000 loading cycles while remaining
insensitive to temperature variation. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric
unit exhibits a Seebeck coefficient of 1.233 μV/K, a temperature
resolution of 0.5 K, and favorable linearity and output stability.
Moreover, the thermoelectric output remains nearly unchanged under
varying pressure conditions, while the pressure response is maintained
over different temperature environments, demonstrating favorable self-decoupling
capability with negligible signal crosstalk. The proposed design strategy
provides a simple and reliable approach for constructing multifunctional
flexible sensors and shows promising potential for battery temperature
monitoring, wearable healthcare, human–machine interaction,
and intelligent electronic skin.
