Regulate interfacial polymerization in cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks/graphene oxide-modified PVDF membranes for desalination

Yijiang Liu,Yuliang Chen,Yuliang Wu,Weiwei Huang,Jun Cheng,Xuesong Yi

In recent years, composite nanofiltration membranes have emerged as a popular desalination technology because of their unique structures. However, the “trade-off” effect posed a significant limitation on the advancement of nanofiltration membrane applications. In this study, cyclodextrin-based metal–organic frameworks (CD-MOF/GO) were uniformly embedded into a substrate membrane to modulate the motion of piperazine molecules during the interfacial polymerization process. This method has the potential to reconfigure the spatial structure of the polyamide active layer and bolster the performance of composite nanofiltration membranes. First, the CD-MOF/GO within the pores could slow down the diffusion rate of piperazine to facilitate the formation of an ultrathin active layer, which diminished the resistance to the mass transfer of water molecules to improve the membrane performance. Simultaneously, the unique nanocavity structure of CD-MOF/GO could provide more unobstructed pathways for water molecules to permeate through the membrane. The results demonstrated that the flux of the composite nanofiltration membrane modified with MOF could reach up to 19.44 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , which is approximately four times higher than that of the unmodified membrane, while maintaining a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection rate of 95.52 %. The CD-MOF/GO-modified nanofiltration membrane effectively overcomes flux limitations, showing potential in mitigating the “trade-off” effect and offering a promising approach for achieving efficient seawater desalination.

PVDF-HFP-Based Pioneering Anion Exchange Membranes for Advanced Sulfuric Acid Enrichment with Reduced Water Mobility

Shuaijun Yu,Yazhen Jiang,Geting Xu,Hongyu Liu,Edison Huixiang Ang,Junbin Liao,Jiangnan Shen

In the context of industrial effluent management, the application of electrodialysis (ED) for the recovery of sulfuric acid has attracted significant interest. Despite the technological promise, the employment of traditional anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is frequently marred by substantial proton leakage, a pervasive issue that markedly degrades the effectiveness of acid recovery. To address this challenge, we embarked on a novel approach utilizing a polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (PVDF-HFP) substrate. This innovative method harnessed the inherent properties of fluorine-containing groups within PVDF-HFP to provide robust acid stability, while incorporating tertiary amine groups to minimize water uptake resulted in the creation of a proton-blocking AEM. A distinguishing feature of this AEM is its thermally cross-linked diene structure, which not only preserves acid concentration properties but also considerably reduces water migration. Moreover, our investigation undertakes an exhaustive examination of the recycling concentration and water transport within the acid recovery framework, alongside the intricate interplay with energy expenditure. This investigation could facilitate the adoption of industrial acid recovery methods utilizing AEMs designed for minimal water uptake and enhanced acid-blocking capabilities.

Novel FeNi-LDHs@Cellulose modified PVDF membrane in-situ coupling Fenton system purification of organic wastewater

Dongzheng Wang,Guo Yang,Caiyi Jiang,Xingyong Liu,Bo Xing,Min Li,Yi Wang,Fuping Zhang,Xiaolin Shi,Qian Zhou

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane in-situ coupling catalytic oxidation technology holds great promise as a means to mitigate membrane fouling. However, its application is constrained by several factors, including the inherent incompatibility with inorganic nanoparticles, unsatisfactory hydrophily, and limited catalytic capacity. In this study, a novel in-situ coupling Fenton membrane catalyst with high permeability and anti-fouling capacity was processed based on highly efficient FeNi-LDHs@Cellulose. The performance evaluation exhibit that pure water flux and TOC removal efficiency increased from 556.81 L·m −2 ·h −1 , 65.42% to 665.24 L·m −2 ·h −1 , 99.03 % while rate of Irreversible contamination (Rir) decreased from 42 % to 11.7 %, respectively. After 5 cycles, the pure water flux decreased from 665.24 L·m −2 ·h −1 to 471.13 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and the TOC removal efficiency and flux recovery rate (FRR) still remained above 90%. In addition, further mechanistic insights by pollution model, extended Derjaguin-Landau-VerweyOverbeek (XDLVO), Three-dimensional fluorescence (3D-EEM) and EPR verified that anti-fouling mainly attribute to high hydrophilicity and in-situ decomposition pollutants. Meanwhile, the decomposition mechanism of pollutants and generation path of OH and 1 O 2 were proposed. This research provides insights for further improving the permeability and anti-fouling performance of PVDF membrane in the field of treatment organic wastewater by combining organic with inorganic nanoparticles.

Deep removal the irreversible contaminants of N-MnOx@PVDF membrane using in-situ coupling catalyzed ozonation

Caiyi Jiang,Peng Tang,Xiaolin Shi,Li Yang,Xingyong Liu,Bo Xing,Guo Yang,Yang Luo,Dongzheng Wang,Xiaoyu Zhao

Due to high efficiency and durability, Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) membranes are promising for their application in wastewater purification. However, they still inevitably face the challenge of membrane clogging problem, restricting separation and anti-fouling performance. Herein, a novel N-MnO x @PVDF membrane with high catalytic ozonation ability was synthesized using the blending non-solvent-induced reverse transfer method, evidenced by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Compared with pristine PVDF, N-MnO x @PVDF has better hydrophilicity and reasonable pore structure, resulting in higher permeability and anti-fouling properties. After in-situ catalytic ozonation cleaning, the Flux Recovery Ratio ( FRR ) increases from 72.1% to 99.8%, and the irreversible pollution rate ( R ir ) decreases from 31.9% to 0.13%. Meanwhile, the high stability and reusability can be demonstrated from high Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of humic acid (HA, 93%), high FRR (94%), and low R ir (4.3%) after consecutive cycles filtration experiments. In addition, further mechanistic insights are verified by 3D-excitation Emission Matrices (EEM) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) characterization, demonstrating that the removal of irreversible contaminants can be mainly ascribed to indirect oxidation of 1 O 2 , and their possible generation pathway is also proposed. This study provides valuable insights into the development of advanced antifouling membranes.

Thermal study and combustion performance analysis of core–shell structured Al–Si@PVDF thermite composite materials

Yang Zhan-jun,Liu Hao,Das Oisik,Wang Xiao-qian,Li Mi,Han Zhong-xuan,Jiang Lin,Rotaru Andrei

This study contributes to advancing research in aluminium alloys employed as fuels for thermites (pyrotechnic compositions formed of metal and metal oxide powders). Aluminium alloys possess certain potential in regulating energy release and enhancing combustion efficiency; in order to explore better formulations for the aluminium alloy fuel thermite, PVDF-coated Al–Si samples with different proportions were prepared here by using the electrostatic spraying method. In this study, we are primarily addressing the energy release limitation problems which are imposed by the oxide layer formation during the combustion of aluminium–silicon alloy powders in air and explore the optimal formulation of aluminium–silicon fuel combined with fluoropolymer oxidants. Leveraging advanced electrostatic spraying technology, various PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-coated Al–Si samples (Al–Si@PVDF) were successfully synthesized. Morphological characterization confirmed the complete encapsulation of Al–Si alloy powders by PVDF, yielding spherical core–shell structures with uniform elemental distribution and favourable microstructural characteristics. Further, by thermal analysis and calorimetry investigation, a two-stage reaction between Al–Si and PVDF was unveiled: an initial PVDF decomposition phase followed by an ignition reaction phase. To comprehensively evaluate the combustion performance of samples with varying proportions, high-speed and infrared cameras were employed for precise observations, enabling a deep dive into the combustion parameters and their disparities under two distinct spatial conditions. Through these combustion performance experiments and post-combustion product analysis, we deduced the micro-combustion process mechanism of Al–Si@PVDF. This works not only that it provides a scientific basis for optimizing the formulation of aluminium–silicon fuels and fluoropolymer oxidants, but also holds positive implications for advancing research and development in aluminium alloy-based metastable intermolecular composites. Last but not least, besides the high combustion rates, low ignition temperatures, stable combustion, and strong exothermic performance were obtained for these thermite composite materials.

Carbon Dot-Driven phase transition in coaxial Wet-Spun PVDF fibers for wearable piezoelectric energy harvesting

Jun Yu,Tiantian Yue,Mengqi Wang,Yi Liu,Fan Liao,Zhenhui Kang,Yuqing Liu

Flexible piezoelectrics are pivotal for self-powered wearable systems, yet low-dimensional materials like PVDF fibers suffer from inefficient β-phase crystallization and limited charge transport. Here, coaxial wet-spun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibers integrated with carbon quantum dots (CDs) overcome these limitations via solvent-nonsolvent phase separation and mechanical stretching. A 3 wt% CDs doping induces 75.96 % β-phase content through interfacial hydrogen bonding, achieving a high piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 of 28 pC/N) and output performance of 19.4 V and 0.2 μA, which is 86.7 % surpassing pristine PVDF(15 pC/N), and Under optimal experimental conditions, the peak voltage and current can reach up to 31 V and 0.2 μA. Cyclic durability tests (3 Hz, 20 N, 1000 cycles) confirm excellent stability with > 90 % performance retention. Practical applications highlight rapid capacitor charging (5 V in 30 s) and the ability to power nine LEDs. Additionally, bending sensitivity (3.6 V at 60°) and motion sensing (9 V for arm bending) validate its adaptability for wearable electronics and IoT applications, offering a scalable strategy for high-performance flexible energy harvesters.

Photocatalytic nanocomposite membranes for high-efficiency degradation of tetracycline under visible light: An imitated core-shell Au-TiO2-based design

Ming Yan,Yilin Wu,Xinlin Liu

Herein, Au-TiO 2 nanocomposite photocatalysts were initially constructed through a three-step-synthesis strategy including the sodium citrate reduction method, sol-gel method and high-temperature hydrothermal method . After that, Au-TiO 2 /PVDF photocatalytic nanocomposite membranes with visible light response were synthesized by a phase conversion process, thereinto, the Au-TiO 2 nanocomposite and PVDF powder were mixed into casting solutions by physical blending. Various characterization methods, such as SEM, TEM , FTIR, XRD , XPS , WCA and UV-vis DRS , etc., were used to systematically characterize the micromorphology, structural composition, wettability and optical properties of different samples. The UV-vis DRS results showed that the as-prepared nano-Au doping structure effectively enhanced the utilization factor of visible light in the process of photocatalytic degradation. The antifouling results of BSA adsorption experiments showed that 0.3-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes possessed good antifouling performance. By analyzing the regeneration stability experiments, it could be found that the 0.3-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes also exhibited excellent regeneration stability and easy separation and recovery features. The photocatalytic degradation of different membranes under visible light was investigated with tetracycline. The results showed that the photocatalytic degradation rate of 0.3-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF nanocomposite membranes reached 75% within 120 min. Moreover, the first-order kinetic linear fitting showed that the k value of 0.3-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes was 0.01212 min −1 , which was 2.7 times and 2.0 times higher than that of 0.1-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF and 0.5-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes. That is to say, photocatalytic activity of 0.3-Au-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes were obviously improved.

Enhanced Flame-Retardant Properties of PVDF Using a Multiphase Synergistic Approach with Phytate-Chitosan-Modified Boron Nitride

Shiyi Ming,Piao Wang,Shaoyuan Wu,Jinghan Hu,Jie Zhang,Lianlian Li,Bingyue Huang,Weijiang Huang,Xingyu Guan,Kui Wang,Wei Yan

The morphology and composition of inorganic particles play a vital role in controlling the flame-retardant characteristics of polymers. Halogen-free flame-retardant polymers have also become a current research hotspot. Boron nitride (BN), phytic acid (PA), and chitosan (CS), a natural polysaccharide with a nitrogen content of approximately 6.8–7.5%, show great promise as flame retardants owing to their high thermal stability, P-based flame retardancy, and natural polysaccharide properties, respectively. In this study, BN (BN@PA-CS) particles coated with PA and CS were designed and prepared via a facile modification strategy. The effect of BN@PA-CS on the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was further investigated, and it was found that both characteristics were improved. Compared to pure PVDF, the PVDF composite films exhibited a significantly lower peak heat release rate and total heat release. With a BN@PA-CS content of 20%, the peak was the lowest at 18.25 W/g, corresponding to a decrease of 77.83%. This phenomenon may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the BN nanosheets and PA-CS in the BN@PA-CS particles. This work describes a facile and effective method of modifying the morphology and composition of inorganic particles, thereby controlling the properties of polymers, and provides a new approach to improving the safety of PVDF battery separators.

Interfacial stability effect of PDA@PVDF dual-coating on CL-20: Synergistically suppressed polymorphic transition and solubility

Hao Wang,Chenming Li,Enjie Zhang,Yapeng Ou,Xiaoxia Ma

Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is a high-energy explosive widely used in composite explosives and propellants, but its application is severely limited by thermally induced ε-to-γ polymorphic transition and high solubility in nitrate ester solvents. The transition reduces energy density and increasing sensitivity, and the solubility causes dissolution-recrystallization defects (e.g., voids, compositional inhomogeneities) during long-term storage. To address these issues while preserving its high energetic performance, this study developed a polydopamine@polyvinylidene fluoride (PDA@PVDF) dual-coating strategy, fabricating CL-20 composite particles with a core-shell structure. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed that the ε-to-γ phase transition temperature of CL-20 increased from 110 °C (pristine CL-20) to 140 °C. Meanwhile, the CL-20@PDA@9%PVDF sample exhibited the lowest solubility and the best solvent resistance, and the solubility of CL-20 in nitrate ester solvents was drastically reduced from 0.229 g/100 g to 0.026 g/100 g, an 88.6% decrease, effectively enhancing its structural and solvent resistance stability. For energetic performance, when mixed with aluminum powder at a 7:3 mass ratio, the CL-20@PDA@9%PVDF/Al composite achieved a combustion heat of 8275 J/g, 8.7% higher than that of the unmodified Al/CL-20 system (7611 J/g). Combustion pressure tests showed that although the modified system exhibited slightly lower initial peak pressure and pressure rise rate due to dilute CL-20 content from inert coatings, it presented a unique "delayed enhancement" effect, with pressure gradually surpassing and ultimately exceeding that of the unmodified system in the middle and late combustion stages, enabling more sustained high-pressure output. This work realizes the synergistic optimization of CL-20’s polymorphic/solvent stability and energetic performance, providing a feasible and scalable approach for the practical application of CL-20 in advanced energetic systems.

Smart Thermoresponsive CoZn-ZIF Decorated PVDF/PNIPAM Nanofiber Membrane for Switchable Emulsion Separation and Catalytic Dye Degradation

Le Yin,Mu Hu,Yajie Liu,Yiyi Lin,Yuan Wang,Shaojun Yuan

The development of intelligent, environmentally responsive oil–water separation membranes with reversible wettability presents a promising strategy for controllable emulsion separation and the advanced treatment of complex oily wastewater. Wastewater. In this study, a novel thermally responsive membrane with switchable wettability between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic states was fabricated via in situ growth of bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (CoZn-ZIF) on electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVDF/PNIPAM) nanofiber membranes. The resulting PVDF/PNIPAM@CoZn-ZIF membrane leverages the thermally induced reversible conformational transition of PNIPAM to exhibit underwater superoleophobicity below its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and under-oil superhydrophobicity above LCST. This switchable wettability enabled efficient on-demand separation of both oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, achieving water permeation fluxes exceeding 1900 L·m–2·h–1 and oil permeation fluxes over 1150 L·m–2·h–1, with separation efficiencies above 99.00% and 99.60%, respectively. Moreover, the embedded Co1Zn3-ZIF served as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), generating reactive oxygen species (·OH and·SO4–) and enabling rapid degradation of methylene blue, with a removal efficiency of 99.92% within 15 min. This study presents a multifunctional composite membrane as an intelligent, efficient platform for integrated oil–water emulsion separation and organic pollutant remediation.

Polyamide nanofilm composite membranes (NCMs) supported by chitosan-coated polyvinyldenefluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous mats and their separation properties

Guo-Rong Xu,He-Li Zhao,Shui-Bo Wu

Desalination provides an effective method to solve the problem of freshwater shortage, which is currently the most urgent issue around the world. Among all the desalination methods, membrane desalination is superior to others due to its unique advantages, such as easy operations and high separation performance. Specially, polyamide thin-film composite (PA-TFC) reverse osmosis membranes are the dominant desalination membranes in recent decades and have been widely used all around the world. However, the comparatively high operating pressures and low water permeations make them non cost-effective and have seriously restricted their wider applications. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) have shown great promising applications in the filtration areas. ENMs-based filtration membranes can provide higher permeations under the same operating conditions. Therefore, in the current work, a novel PA-TFC membrane supported by ENMs is designed. The ENMs-supported PA-TFC membranes show apparently high water flux (2.06 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) with a salt rejection of 94.4%. More importantly, the operating pressure is only 8 bar, which is lower than most of the currently used and researched PA-TFC membranes. The fabricated membranes are more cost-effective and can be used in some unique desalination areas which need as high as permeations and moderate salt rejections.

Facile preparation of quaternary ammonium graft-modified PVDF nanofiltration membrane with excellent antibiotic desalination and antibacterial performance

Guilin Dong,Faxiang Feng,Shi Su,Zanming Zhu,Xiaobing Liu,Runlin Han

Nanofiltration can be used to concentrate antibiotics and separate inorganic salts in the antibiotic fermentation process, replacing traditional evaporation and concentration methods and saving energy. To address the issues of poor separation selectivity for antibiotics and susceptibility to biofouling in traditional separation membranes, quaternized poly(vinylidene fluoride) (QPVDF) nanofiltration membrane was prepared with immersion phase inversion method by grafting allyltrimethylammonium chloride (ATAC) onto PVDF using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technology. This process creates a nanofiltration membrane that exhibits a synergistic effect of permselectivity and hydrophilicity enhancement. The modified membrane shows a 2.6-fold increase in water flux (up to 45.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) with a water contact angle reduction of about 20°. Experimental results showed that the QPVDF membrane retained 91 % of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and only 4.7 % of NaCl, with an antibiotic/salt separation coefficient of 10.6. The QPVDF membrane showed excellent antibacterial properties and inhibited more than 98 % of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). It also experienced stable rejection to TC in 10 h of continuous operation, demonstrating good antifouling performance. The QPVDF membrane has significant potential applications in the field of efficient antibiotic desalination in wastewater.
