Effects of different MgO fiber structures on adhesive capacity and ionic migration of Li–Si/LiCl–KCl/FeS2 thermal batteries

Xinrui Huang,Jingsong Liu,Mengshi Zeng,Xiaowei Yang,Xiaojiang Liu

In this article, the MgO imporous fibers, MgO porous fibers and hydrofluoric acid (HF) modified MgO porous fibers were researched as the electrolyte binders in Li–Si/LiCl–KCl/FeS 2 thermal batteries respectively. The results show that the wettability between the LiCl–KCl molten salt and the MgO fiber binders increases significantly in order of MgO porous fibers and HF modified MgO porous fibers. The separator pellet using the MgO porous fiber modified by 40 mol% (of the MgO fiber) HF solution as the electrolyte binder exhibits an extremely small amount of electrolyte leakages (19.6 mg cm −2 ) and the highest ionic conductivity (0.66 S cm −1 at 450 °C). Meanwhile, the corresponding thermal battery shows the largest discharge capacity (425 mA h g −1 at 1.0 V voltage plateau). Moreover, the effect of HF modification on the ion migration was analyzed based on the analysis of element diffusion and the formed MgF 2 phase. In summary, modification of MgO porous fiber binder by HF solution is a potential way to improve the performance of thermal batteries.

UV-Induced Surface Photovoltage and Photoluminescence on n-Si/TiO2/TiO2:Eu for Dual-Channel Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds

Jing Hu,Xiaoming Jiang,Lan Wu,Kailai Xu,Xiandeng Hou,Yi Lv

In this work, a novel dual-channel sensing mode, i.e., UV-induced surface photovoltage (SPV) and photoluminescence (PL) on n-type Si/TiO2/Eu3+-doped TiO2 (n-Si/TiO2/TiO2:Eu), was demonstrated for the discrimination of 20 volatile compounds. The SPV signaling in this work employed a laboratory-constructed microvoltammeter with good analytical performances. This device also features wireless communication, portability, along with low cost and power consumption. The SPV and PL pattern of each analyte was distinct, and the hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) result showed that these 20 volatile species were distinguishable, even for structural isomers. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) further demonstrated the robustness of this sensor: 180 unknown samples from three groups at concentrations of 15.3, 31.7, and 79.2 mg/L were classified with accuracies of 96.7%, 95.0%, and 100%, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that SPV and PL channels contributed equally to the good discrimination ability due to two distinct sensing mechanisms. This dual-channel sensor was also successfully applied in the discrimination of beverage samples such as liquor, wine, and vinegar.

Yang Liu,Weihua Chen,Lehui Lu,Bai Yang

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have been widely noticed due to their superior optical properties in the past decade. Herein, we report the Si-assisted N, P co-doped RTP carbonized polymer dots (CPDs), prepared by one-step microwave assisted heating of 3-(2-Aminoethylamino)propyldimethoxymethylsilane and phosphoric acid aqueous solution. The obtained CPDs exhibit bright RTP with an absolute photoluminescence quantum yield 34.17%, absolute phosphorescence quantum yield 11.42% and long lifetime of 1.42 s, which lasts for about 16 s to the naked eyes. We apply the obtained CPDs into information encryption and Polyethylene   terephthalate (PET) film graphic anti-counterfeiting with facile way. Additionally, we make more efforts to realize aqueous RTP CPDs composite. The obtained aqueous CPDs composite exhibits bright aqueous RTP with absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) of 12.61%, absolute phosphorescence quantum yield (QY) of 5.08% and RTP lifetime of 1.46 s, which lasts for about 10 s to the naked eyes. The RTP CPDs composite is nontoxic and biocompatible. These brilliant characteristics allow CPDs composite to be applicable in biological imaging. Thisstudy affords a new RTP material which can be easily prepared and used for information encryption, graphic anti-counterfeiting and biological imaging

A novel process for the preparation of Cys-Si-NIPAM as a stationary phase of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC)

Fangbin Fan,Licheng Wang,Yijing Li,Xusheng Wang,Xiaofeng Lu,Yong Guo

l -Cysteine (L-Cys) and N-Isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM)-modified silica spheres as a novel stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) was produced firstly by cross-linking polymerization. Some characterizations in this article confirmed that the synthesis of Cys-Si-NIPAM is successful. Some polymer layers can be observed through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, through nitrogen adsorption porosity method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and other characterization methods, we can find the significant changes after modify. It has good hydrophilic property and higher column effect than bare silica column, Si-Cys column and Si-NIPAM column under the same conditions. It has good separation effect for some hydrophilic analytes such as 5 nucleosides and nucleoside bases, 5 amino acids , 4 sulfonamide drugs and 10 saccharides . The effects including column temperature, pH and organic solvent content on chromatographic performance were studied, which proved that hydrophilic interactions can be simultaneously existed between the stationary phase and the analytes. In addition, reproducibility and efficiency of the Cys-Si-NIPAM column was also investigated, the results illustrated that the stationary phase have passable stability (the intraday RSDs 0.08–0.44%, n = 3 and the interday RSD 0.46–3.50%, n = 3) and ideal efficiency (plates per meter, ~45700 plates/m). In conclusion, the preparation process of this hydrophilic liquid chromatography stationary phase is not only simple, but also can meet the basic requirements for the separation of hydrophilic analytes.

High-Performance Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-Organic Passivated Si Solar Cells Enabled by Spatially Selective Harvesting of High-Quality Sponges

Yuke Ren,Qi Wang,Jiahe Chen,Jianan Zhang,Jianxin Guo,Dehua Yang,Bingbing Chen,Lu Zhang,Yiming Xu,Xuan Chang,Tiansheng Sun,Qing Gao,Anyuan Cao,Jianhui Chen

Carbon nanotubes/Si (CNTs/Si) solar cells have emerged as promising photovoltaic devices due to their high performance and relatively simple fabrication processes. Multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) in solar cells exhibit better cost-effectiveness owing to the broader processing tolerance of MWCNTs synthesis. However, their efficiency previously reached only 12.49%, which has often been attributed to the higher defect density and inferior quality of MWCNTs compared with single-walled CNTs. In this study, by selecting high-quality pristine MWCNTs synthesized via floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition, we achieved a champion efficiency of 22.74% for MWCNTs:Nafion/Si solar cells. This breakthrough stems from the finding that while both the inner and outer parts of MWCNTs sponge can be uniformly dispersed when mixed with Nafion, the inner MWCNTs ink exhibits better stability than the outer MWCNTs ink due to amorphous carbon and copper impurities in the outer MWCNTs. The synergy between Nafion and the inner MWCNTs results in a high-work-function MWCNTs:Nafion film and a defect-passivated Si surface, leading to favorable band alignment, excellent carrier-selective transport properties, and consequently high device performance. This work challenges the conventional view that the higher defect density in MWCNTs inherently limits device performance and provides new insights for developing low-cost, high-efficiency carbon-based/Si solar cells.

Room-temperature liquid-plasma-engineered covalent interfaces enable dual-confinement silicon anodes with ultrahigh Si content and ultralong cycling life

Yonghong Luo,Xiang Li,Zheng Bo,Jianhua Yan,Kefa Cen,Huachao Yang

Silicon (Si) is widely regarded as a leading high-capacity anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), benefiting from its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity and ultralow lithiation potential. However, its practical commercialization has long been impeded by severe volume variation over successive lithiation/delithiation cycles, which causes electrode pulverization, unregulated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) growth, and consequent rapid capacity degradation. In this work, we develop a room-temperature liquid-phase plasma strategy to engineer interfacial covalent bonding in dual-confinement Si anodes with long-cycle stability. The liquid-phase plasma process produces abundant oxidative radicals and high-energy electrons, which simultaneously promote robust covalent coupling between composite components and enable in situ conformal growth of an amorphous TiO 2 interlayer on Si nanoparticles. This design constructs a hierarchical dual-confinement architecture in which Si−O−Ti covalent bonds act synergistically with physical encapsulation. This synergy effectively mitigates cycle-induced mechanical stress, preserves the structural integrity of the Si@TiO 2 @MXene electrode, and simultaneously balances electron and ion transport. Consequently, the optimized 60 wt% Si anode delivers an initial discharge capacity of 2784 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , paired with an initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 89.2%. It retains 931.4 mAh g −1 of reversible capacity after 1000 continuous cycles at 1 A g −1 , indicating improved cycling durability relative to Si-based anodes with non-covalent interfaces. The proposed liquid plasma-enabled strategy provides a versatile interfacial engineering approach for fabricating durable, high-capacity Si-based anodes for high-energy LIBs.

Synergistic interfacial-mechanical binder design for high-areal-capacity and long-lifespan Si-based negative electrodes in practical pouch cells

Li Zeheng,Wu Zhuoying,Qian Shangshu,Lv Xucheng,Dai Chengjun,Lin Zheng,Zheng Mengting,Liu Tiefeng,Song Ting-Lu,Lin Zhan,Lu Jun

The pursuit of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries demands high-silicon silicon-graphite composite negative electrodes, yet their commercialization remains hindered by interfacial incompatibility and mechanical instability. While an ideal binder must simultaneously achieve robust adhesion to both silicon and graphite, accommodate substantial silicon volume changes, and maintain high binder bulk stability, existing systems fail to harmonize these requirements. Here, we present a molecularly engineered binder that resolves this trilemma through interfacial-mechanical synergy. By integrating a hydrophobic-soft copolymer and hydrophilic-hard copolymer, our design enables amphiphilic interfacial adhesion and provides mechanical properties specifically tailored to accommodate silicon volume changes. A supramolecular crosslinker further reinforces interchain cohesion, ensuring binder bulk stability during long cycling life. This design enables a 2 Ah-level pouch cell to sustain 500 cycles at 0.3 C with 99.83% average Coulombic efficiency. At a commercial binder loading of 5 wt%, 1 Ah cells deliver over 2000 cycles at 1 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.93%. Our work has the potential to not only resolve the long-standing trade-off between interfacial and mechanical stability in silicon-based negative electrodes but also provide a practical framework for designing next-generation binders targeting energy-dense, durable batteries.

Interfacial Si–O–Zn Coordination in Chitosan Hydrogel Electrolytes Regulating (002)-Oriented Zn Deposition for Flexible Energy Storage and Sensing

Shuting Liu,Mingde Tong,Qingkun Tang,Xinyan Lv,Zuyun Chen,Songshan Zeng,Xiaoyuan Yu

Abstract Sustainable wearable electronics demand flexible energy-storage and sensing devices made by greener, low-impact routes. Aqueous zinc-based hydrogel electrolytes are attractive here, but their use is limited by uncontrolled zinc dendrite growth and by the difficulty of combining fast Zn2+ transport with controlled interfacial deposition. Most hydrogels resist dendrites only through passive physical confinement, without actively governing interfacial zinc deposition. Herein, using chitosan, a renewable polysaccharide obtained from chitin-rich seafood waste, we construct an interfacial Si–O–Zn coordination motif within a hydrogel electrolyte through a mild, all-aqueous, one-step in situ polymerization that requires no separate activation step. Chitosan and acrylamide form the matrix, zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)2) is the zinc source, and nanosilicon acts as a functional filler. Chitosan bridges the organic and inorganic domains through its -NH2/-OH groups, while free Zn2+ ions coordinate with surface silanols to form interfacial Si–O–Zn coordination interactions. The optimized CAA-6-Si(3:1) electrolyte delivers a high ionic conductivity (36.04 ± 1.71 mS cm–1), a wide electrochemical stability window (2.56 V), and a Zn2+ transference number of 0.583. Spectroscopic and structural analyses reveal that the interfacial Si–O–Zn sites actively steer Zn2+ toward the low-energy (002) plane, suppressing dendrites rather than merely blocking them; accordingly, Zn || Zn symmetric cells cycle stably for 1820 h at 2 mA cm–2 and 535 h at 5 mA cm–2. The same electrolyte integrates readily into multiple flexible devices: zinc-ion hybrid capacitors retain 90.4% capacity after 50,000 cycles at 10 A g–1, with stable performance under bending, and strain sensors (gauge factor = 1.54) reliably monitor physiological signals. By coupling interfacial coordination chemistry to zinc deposition, this chitosan hydrogel electrolyte combines fast Zn2+ transport with (002)-oriented, dendrite-suppressed plating. Made from a renewable feedstock through a mild, low-impact process, it offers a sustainable route to flexible energy-storage and sensing devices.

Ball milling assisted Al/Si co-doping for enhanced performance of calcium-based CO2 adsorbents: Structural evolution and synergistic mechanisms

Penghui Yang,Cong Luo,Huizhe Wu,Zhen Du,Bo Liu,Xiaoshan Li,Fan Wu,Zewu Zhang,Liqi Zhang

The rapid sintering and performance degradation of calcium-based adsorbents during cyclic CO 2 capture represent a major bottleneck limiting their large-scale application. While ball milling combined with inert oxide doping is an effective anti-sintering strategy, most studies focus on single-oxide doping systems using high-purity materials. In industrial applications, cost-effective Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 -rich minerals or composite supports are commonly used as dopant sources. However, the synergistic mechanism between ball milling and such multi-component co-doping remains poorly understood, hindering the rational design of high-performance adsorbents. To address this, we investigate the synergistic modification mechanism of ball milling with Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 co-doping. The results indicated that the synergistically modified sample (80Ca-10Al/10Si) exhibited excellent sintering-resistant stability, retaining a CO 2 capture capacity remaining at 0.36 g CO 2 /g adsorbent after 50 cycles. And ball milling achieved nanoscale homogeneous dispersion of Al and Si components within the CaO matrix. This subsequently facilitated the in-situ formation of an interwoven composite inert skeleton consisting of Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 and CaSiO 3 during cycling. This structure effectively pinned the CaO grain boundaries, suppressing high-temperature sintering. Concurrently, the modification increased the surface oxygen vacancy concentration, specific surface area and pore volume of the adsorbent. This change reduced the activation energy of the fast reaction stage by more than 40%, and consequently, a marked improvement in reaction kinetics. This work elucidates the synergistic mechanism of ball milling and multi-component doping in constructing a sintering-resistant nanocomposite structure, providing a new approach for designing calcium-based CO 2 adsorbents with high stability and reactivity.

Effect of ball-milling reaction between ethanol and Si on the electrochemical performance of silicon anodes for Lithium-ion batteries

Zhilong Wang,Changjun Zhu,Songyi Chen,Kanghua Chen

The substantial volume expansion of silicon results in electrode structure collapse and rapid capacity degradation, posing a major obstacle to its large-scale commercial application. In this study, a high-performance silicon anode was developed using a cost-effective and efficient wet ball milling process, with anhydrous ethanol as the milling solvent. The reaction between ethanol and silicon during ball milling, and its impact on the silicon's structure, composition, and electrochemical performance, was systematically investigated. The results show that the ball milling reaction between ethanol and silicon in situ forms a SiO x layer and Si-OH/Si-O-CH 2 CH 3 groups on the silicon surface. Prolonged ball milling not only leads to the thickening of the SiO x layer, which hinders Li + diffusion, but also causes the transformation of Si-OH groups into Si-O-CH 2 CH 3 groups. This reduces the binding sites with polyacrylic acid (PAA), weakens the mechanical strength of the silicon anode, and results in significant volume changes and rapid capacity degradation. As a result, at 0.5 A g −1 , the Si-72h anode achieves an initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 90.21 %, and after 100 cycles, it maintains a high reversible specific capacity of 2072.5 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 75.13 %. At 1 A g −1 , after 300 cycles, it still retains a specific capacity of 1308.4 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 48.46 %, which is approximately 5 times the specific capacity of the Si-24h anode (254.0 mAh g −1 ) and 10 times that of the Si-120h anode (132.3 mAh g −1 ). Even at 4 A g −1 , after 1000 cycles, the anode still maintains a specific capacity of 1100.0 mAh g −1 , with a Coulombic efficiency exceeding 99.93 %. At a current density of 0.5C, the LiFePO 4 ||Si-72h full cell exhibited a capacity retention of 94.93 % after 100 cycles. This work offers valuable insights into the wet ball milling process for preparing high-performance silicon anode materials, facilitating their large-scale practical application.

Influences of alkali metal fluoride and Si/Al ratio on preparation aluminum-rich ZSM-5 zeolite membrane without organic template

Deyu Si,Meihua Zhu,Ronghui You,Yuqin Li,Ting Wu,Tian Gui,Na Hu,Izumi Kumakiri,Xiangshu Chen,Hidetoshi Kita

Aluminum-rich ZSM-5 zeolite membranes are prepared on α-alumina support through organic template free precursor gels by secondary hydrothermal synthesis , microstructure of the membrane through the different Si/Al ratio and alkali metal fluoride synthesis gel are discussed in this work. Alkali metal fluorides have a significant influence on the synthesis of aluminum-rich ZSM-5 zeolite membranes without organic template, which are realized by the synergistic reaction of the “bridging” and “salting-out” effects. Sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride could produce dense and needle-like zeolites layer on the supports by an extremely low Si/Al ratio synthesis gel (Si/Al <10). When the Si/Al ratio of the initial synthesis gel is 18.52, the compact and prismatic ZSM-5 zeolites are fully covered on the supports with sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride or lithium fluoride. There are few of ZSM-5 zeolites could form on the support by cesium fluoride containing synthesis gel.
