Interfacial engineering of 1D SnO2@WO3 heterojunction nanofibers toward high-performance pseudocapacitive energy storage

Bin Yue,Jiaxin Dong,He Lv,Linlin Li,Ying Lv,Xinmiao Jian,Jiahui Song,Lihong Dong,Yanju Huang,Fengchun Wang,Xiangting Dong

The SnO 2 /WO 3 nanoparticle-decorated heterojunction ensures electron and ion exchange. • Decorated WO 3 nanoparticles effectively suppress the volume expansion of SnO 2 . • This heterostructure exposes abundant active sites for faradaic redox reactions. • Synergistic effects enable specific capacitance of 238.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . • Interfacial interactions maintain structural integrity with 91.2% stability. One-dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanomaterials attract increasing interest for supercapacitor applications. Therefore, the rational design and facile construction of unique 1D heterostructures remain highly desirable for advanced energy storage. Herein, a novel architecture comprising 1D SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs) uniformly decorated with 0D WO 3 nanoparticles (NPs) is successfully fabricated via coaxial electrospinning coupled with subsequent thermal calcination. By finely tuning the molar ratio of the respective precursors, the loading density of the WO 3 NPs on the SnO 2 skeleton is precisely modulated. This distinctive 1D/0D heterostructure effectively exposes abundant electroactive sites and significantly augments the interfacial contact area with the electrolyte, synergistically boosting the electrochemical kinetics. Consequently, at an optimal WO 3 -to-SnO 2 molar ratio of 1:1, the assembled SWHNC-2 electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 238.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . It also exhibits suitable rate capability (retaining 56.7% capacitance at 10 A g −1 ) and moderate cycling stability (91.2% capacitance retention over 2000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). Moreover, a symmetric supercapacitor assembled from this composite achieves maximum energy density of 4.64 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 448 W kg −1 , while maintaining 78% of its initial capacitance after 1000 cycles, indicating its preliminary potential for energy storage. These findings unequivocally highlight the rationally engineered SnO 2 @WO 3 composite as a promising electrode candidate for next-generation supercapacitors. Interfacial Engineering of P3HT–SnO2 Quantum Dot Composites for Superior Room-Temperature NH3 Sensing

Yongjia Liu,Xunqian Zhang,Zizhuo Nie,Jiuhong Wang,Yuhang Liu,Bo Peng,Shujiang Ding,Xinbing Jiang

The development of room-temperature ammonia (NH 3 ) sensors with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability remains a significant challenge for environmental monitoring and healthcare applications. Herein, an interfacial-engineered P3HT–SnO 2 quantum dot (QD) composite was developed for high-performance room-temperature NH 3 sensing. The composite was fabricated through a facile wet-chemical method, where SnO 2 QDs were uniformly integrated with the p-type P3HT matrix to construct abundant heterointerfaces. The optimized P3HT–SnO 2 QD sensor with a mass ratio of 1:1 exhibited significantly enhanced NH 3 sensing performance, achieving a high response of 188.31% toward 50 ppm NH 3 at room temperature, together with excellent reproducibility, long-term stability, and anti-interference capability. The enhanced sensing behavior is attributed to the formation of p–n heterojunctions between P3HT and SnO 2 QDs, along with the quantum confinement effect of SnO 2 QDs to generate abundant surface-active sites, which induce interfacial charge redistribution, facilitate carrier transport, and promote NH 3 adsorption and surface reactions. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the preferential adsorption of NH 3 molecules on the P3HT–SnO 2 interface, providing theoretical insights into the improved sensing selectivity. This work demonstrates an effective interfacial engineering strategy for constructing high-performance organic–inorganic hybrid NH 3 sensors operating at room temperature.

Ti/SnO2-Sb Anodes With Ta2O5 Incorporation: Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Potential and Service Life

Youchen Sun,Meng Gao,Aqing Chen,Jun Zhang

Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes are widely used in electrocatalysis due to their high oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and low cost, but their practical application is limited by the short service life. In this study, Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes were modified by introducing Ta 2 O 5 nanopowder through a thermal decomposition method to form SnO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 heterojunctions. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the electrodes with varying Ta 2 O 5 concentration were systematically investigated by XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, and electrochemical characterization techniques. Results show that Ta 2 O 5 incorporation induces lattice expansion, increases surface roughness, and improves the electrochemical active surface area by more than fourfold. The modified electrodes exhibit a significantly enhanced OEP of up to 2.20 V (vs. RHE), a threefold increase in double-layer capacitance, and a tenfold improvement (about 18 h) in accelerated service life under acidic conditions (100 mA/cm 2 ), compared to Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrode. These findings demonstrate that Ta 2 O 5 doping effectively enhances catalytic activity, stability, and durability of Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes, providing a promising strategy for the design of high-performance anodes for electrocatalytic applications.

PdPtAgCuNi high-entropy alloy functionalized SnO2 nanorods sensor for highly selective detection of hydrogen

Xueyang Li,Xueqing Jiang,Xudong Zheng,Jianfei Lei,Xinxin Wang,Huafei Geng,Zhenjie Zhao,Gaojie Li

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is a promising clean energy carrier, making reliable hydrogen sensors essential for safety monitoring and energy applications. A PdPtAgCuNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was integrated with SnO 2 nanorods to enhance hydrogen sensing performance. The resulting HEA-SnO 2 sensor exhibited a response of 1961.5 toward 200 ppm H 2 and a low detection limit of 20 ppb. The sensor also exhibited rapid response and excellent hydrogen selectivity. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the enhanced sensing behavior originates from the combined electronic and catalytic effects of the HEA. The interfacial Schottky barrier enhances electron depletion layer modulation, while the HEA surface promotes hydrogen activation and dissociation. This study demonstrates the potential of HEAs as effective sensitizers for high-performance hydrogen sensors.

Rh-Induced Oxygen Vacancies in a PdRh/SnO2 Heterointerface for Enhanced MEMS Hydrogen Detection

Xiong Haichao,Xu Shusheng,Wang Tao,Ni Wangze,Wang Zhaozhao,Chen Yiting,Shi Xuerong,Zhao Lipeng,Li Ming

High-performance hydrogen (H 2 ) sensors are essential for industrial safety and environmental monitoring. Herein, we report a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) H 2 sensor based on SnO 2 nanoflowers in situ decorated with PdRh nanoparticles (PdRh/SnO 2 ). Gas-sensing evaluations demonstrate that the sensor exhibits an ultrahigh response ( R a / R g ) of 20.2 to 100 ppm H 2 , representing a nearly 4-fold enhancement compared to the conventional Pd/SnO 2 sensor. Furthermore, it displays rapid response and recovery times of merely 1.7 and 2.2 s, equivalent to ∼63 and ∼34% of those exhibited by the Pd/SnO 2 counterpart, respectively. Additionally, the device achieves a notably low detection limit below 100 ppb alongside good long-term stability. Mechanistic studies combining experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this significant performance enhancement originates from a dual mechanism. While the synergistic catalytic dissociation of H 2 by the PdRh nanoalloy contributes to the improved sensing kinetics, we uncover a more critical role of Rh: it lowers the desorption energy barrier of lattice oxygen in SnO 2 , thereby inducing the formation of high-density oxygen vacancies at the heterointerface. This Rh-mediated defect engineering promotes the adsorption and generation of reactive oxygen species, providing abundant active sites for H 2 reactions and substantially amplifying the sensing response. Finally, the PdRh/SnO 2 -based MEMS sensor was successfully integrated into a portable wireless monitoring system, validating its tremendous potential for H 2 detection applications.

Interfacial engineering of biochar/SnO2 heterojunctions for enhanced charge transfer and gas-sensing performance

Ping Hu,Jun Sun,Jialin Li,Aolin Li,Haiming Duan,Zhaofeng Wu

P-doped biomass carbon/SnO 2 heterostructure delivers 32.9k% ethylene glycol response, 0.53 ppm LoD, and sustained performance under 85% RH and 6-month air exposure. • 1D Poisson-based n-n heterojunction model reveals 0.39 eV barrier modulation and carbon-dominated depletion control for signal amplification. • DFT and experiments confirm SnO 2 (110) governs selective adsorption, while P-doped carbon modulates barrier for signal amplification, guiding sensor design. The integration of carbon materials with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) to engineer heterojunction composites is a proven strategy for enhancing gas-sensing performance. However, the interfacial chemistry and charge transfer mechanisms governing the carbon/MOS interface remain largely elusive. Herein, an n-n heterojunction composite of P-doped biochar/SnO 2 was constructed using cotton stalks and wool as dual-biomass precursors. This system achieves highly efficient detection of ethylene glycol (EG) at room temperature, exhibiting a high response of 32.9k%, a limit of detection of 0.53 ppm, and excellent long-term stability over half a year. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferentially exposed (110) facets of SnO 2 exhibit a remarkably strong adsorption energy of −2.829 eV for EG, which dictates the gas selectivity of the composite system. More importantly, based on the one-dimensional Poisson's equation, an electrical amplification model coupling heavy-doping and light-doping regions was established. This model clarifies that the biochar side with lower carrier concentration dominates the variation in the depletion layer width. Arrhenius fitting confirms that the introduction of P elements expands the modulation range of the interfacial potential barrier height from 0.03 eV to 0.39 eV. These results define the specific roles of MOS, which govern adsorption selectivity, and biochar, which govern gas-sensing signal amplification, at the physical level. This dual-precursor strategy enables the simultaneous formation of a tubular carbon scaffold and in situ P doping in a single step. The established quantitative physical model demonstrates that the depletion layer is dominated by the lightly doped biochar side. This work provides a mechanistic framework for understanding interfacial engineering in carbon/MOS composites, enabling rational design of advanced heterojunctions through precise control of interface properties and charge transfer kinetics.

Fabrication of MEMS-based TiO2/SnO2 core-shell nanowires sensor for enhanced H2S sensing

Zhi-Wei Zheng,Shi-Ying He,Zhan-Yuan Huang,Yi-Wei Wang,Xiao-Fei Zhang,Lang-Xi Ou,David Wei Zhang,Hong-Xiu Yu,Hong-Liang Lu

The TiO 2 /SnO 2 core-shell nanowires (NWs) with precisely controlled SnO 2 shell thickness were successfully synthesized via facile hydrothermal method and atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. The innovative approach of integrating ALD with hydrothermal synthesis allowed for the precise tuning of the SnO 2 shell thickness, which is critical for optimizing gas sensing performance. The sensing performance of the prepared sensor was found to be highly dependent on the SnO 2 shell thickness. Notably, the sensor with a 20 nm SnO 2 shell exhibited the highest response (R a /R g ) of 5.9 towards 5 ppm H 2 S at 300 °C, which was approximately three times higher than that of the pristine TiO 2 NWs sensor (∼1.8). This significant enhancement in H 2 S sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of the TiO 2 /SnO 2 heterojunction and the optimal SnO 2 shell thickness, which were further elucidated through chemisorbed oxygen model, heterojunction depletion theory, and bandgap alignment. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated low power consumption (∼100 mW), great selectivity towards H 2 S, fast response/recovery times (25 s and 173 s, respectively), the ability to detect H 2 S at low concentrations (200 ppb), high sensitivity, excellent repeatability and remarkable stability (over 10 months). Therefore, the proposed MEMS-based TiO 2 /SnO 2 core-shell NWs gas sensor provides a promising approach for industrial and environmental monitoring applications.

Porous SnO2 Nanofibers Embedded with Hollow Hetero-Metal Oxide Nanospheres for Enhanced Gas Sensing

Li Chen,Chen-Chen Liu,Tian-Yu Yang,Yu-Xuan Liu,Yu-Qing Zhang,Zheng Guo

Developing high-performance sensing materials is essential for fabricating gas sensors with superior sensitivity and selectivity. In this paper, we present a generalizable electrospinning-thermal oxidation method combined with a sacrificial template approach to synthesize porous SnO2 nanofibers embedded with hollow heterometal oxide nanospheres (MxOy, where M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn), referred to as MxOy@SnO2. Carbonaceous spheres (CSs) act as templates, absorbing metal ions (Mn+) to form CSs@Mn+ composites. These are incorporated into precursor nanofibers via electrospinning, yielding bead-chain-like one-dimensional structures. Upon calcination in air, the structures transform into MxOy@SnO2 porous nanofibers, while retaining their morphology. Compared to pristine SnO2 nanofibers, the MxOy@SnO2 counterparts exhibit significantly enhanced sensing performance toward volatile organic compounds. Each heterometal oxide imparts selectivity to a specific analyte: Fe2O3 for n-propanol, Co3O4 for acetone, NiO for triethylamine, CuO for ethanethiol, and ZnO for n-butanol. The enhanced sensing response arises from the synergistic effects of porous, hollow architectures and one-dimensional heterojunctions. This work offers a strategy for constructing multifunctional gas sensing materials by embedding hollow nanospheres into porous nanofibers using combinatorial chemistry.

Dual carbon protected ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles with Sn–C interface for robust lithium storage

Xiaobo Wang,Kaixuan Huo,Zhengqiu He,Jialiang Liu,Qingshan Zhao,Jinqiang Zhang,Mingbo Wu

Stannic oxide (SnO 2 )-based lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have garnered tremendous attention due to their high theoretical capacity and suitable lithium ion insertion potential. However, their widespread applications have been hindered by severe electrode degradation caused by substantial volume expansion of SnO 2 . In this study, we embedded amorphous carbon encapsulated ultrafine SnO 2 nanoparticles on hollow macroporous carbon (AC@SnO 2 /HMC) as a superior anode material for LIBs. The unique Sn–C interface and dual carbon protection layers effectively mitigated SnO 2 nanoparticle agglomeration and volume expansion, reinforcing the cycling stability. Additionally, the capacitive contribution from amorphous carbon significantly improved the reversible capacity and rate capability. As such, the resulting AC@SnO 2 /HMC electrode exhibited high capacity (1828 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 ), excellent rate capability (1017.6 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), and outstanding cycling performance (792.1 mAh g −1 after 880 cycles at 2 A g −1 ), surpassing previously reported SnO 2 -based anodes. Furthermore, the AC@SnO 2 /HMC-based Li-ion full cell demonstrated a remarkable capacity of 566.3 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 after 200 cycles. This study offers valuable insights into the development of advanced SnO 2 -based anodes for LIBs and beyond, highlighting their potential for future advancements in battery technology.

Passivating defects in SnO2 electron transport layer through SnF2 incorporation in perovskite solar cells

Fengxuan Chen,Xin Hu,Longhao Jisi,Liping Su,Huiyao Zhao,Yanbei Wei,Rui Zhou,Yangdi Chen,Jun Qu,Yonglian Xiong,Mao Liang,Wenfeng Zhang

Metal halide perovskite solar cells have received a lot of attention from researchers because of their excellent performance, and their efficiency has increased rapidly over the past decade and is now comparable to that of conventional crystalline silicon solar cells. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are currently most commonly constructed with SnO 2 as an electron transport layer (ETL). Nevertheless, its existence of bulk phase defects and surface defects pose an impediment to developing a higher level as the most favorable electron transport layer. This paper suggests an efficient technique to decrease the defects of SnO 2 through incorporating a metal halide SnF 2 in planar (n-i-p type) perovskite solar cells. Divalent Sn in SnF 2 is easily oxidized to tetravalent Sn, leading to more conversion of divalent Sn to tetravalent Sn, which inhibits the formation of oxygen vacancies from the source. F replaces defective sites, passivates oxygen vacancy defects, and reduces the content of hydroxyl oxygen on the surface. Doping SnF 2 enhances the conduction band value and conductivity of SnO 2 , making the energy levels of the ETL and perovskite interfaces more compatible. This eliminates energy barriers in charge transport. Consequently, the fill factor of planar PSCs that were prepared through SnO 2 :SnF 2 ETL exhibited an increase from 80.01% to 82.12%. Furthermore, the efficiency of PCE underwent an improvement from 21.43% to 22.65%.

Oxygen-defect rich SnO2-based homogenous composites for fast response and recovery hydrogen sensor

Qiaoling Xing,Xujie Chen,Yong Cai,Ming Zhang

As a kind of green energy, hydrogen (H 2 ) has been widely concerned and applied by people. One of the biggest challenges for sensing applications is the quick detection of hydrogen leaks or their release in various conditions, particularly in large electric vehicle batteries. This study successfully constructed a quick response and recovery hydrogen sensor based on the In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 heterojunction. The response and recovery time of the In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 hydrogen sensor is 1.1/1.9 s to 50 ppm H 2 . This is reduced to 11.0 %/9.5 % compared to the SnO 2 hydrogen sensor. This sensor's remarkable gas detecting properties are mainly attributed to the In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 heterojunction creation, crystal structure modification, and increased specific surface area (92.9 m 2 /g). Homogenous In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 nanocomposites contain more oxygen defects, which is the primary factor enhancing the sensor's ability to detect gases. Firstly, indium ions are incorporated in the lattice of SnO 2 results in lattice distortion and enhances the presence of oxygen deficiency in the composites, which plays a pivotal role in achieving rapid response and recovery of the sensor. Secondly, In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 heterostructures promote rapid adsorption of oxygen molecules and target gases by facilitating effective electron mobility on their surface. The quicker response and recovery times of hydrogen sensors based on In 2 O 3 -SnO 2 heterojunctions are observed. This innovative approach to creating fast-responding gas sensors highlights the promise of heterojunction-based hydrogen sensors for real-time H 2 monitoring and opens up new research directions.
