Rare-Earth Y–O Skeleton-Mediated Stabilization of Cu2+ for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to CH4

Deguang Ji,Zi Yang,Yaxiong Yao,Yichao Hou,Zidong He,Pengfei Da,Wei Shen,Li An,Yuanmiao Sun,Pinxian Xi,Chun-Hua Yan

Copper-based catalysts show considerable promise in the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) for the production of hydrocarbons and oxygenates, particularly methane (CH 4 ), which is a highly reduced product. The high-valent state of copper (Cu) exerts a positive influence on the formation pathway of CH 4 , but the reduction potential will lead to a decrease in the valence state during CO 2 RR. In this study, a highly crystalline and structurally well-defined Y 2 Cu 2 O 5 catalyst is constructed to stabilize Cu 2+ with the orderly alternating Y─O skeleton layer, owing to the strong bonding interaction. The Y 2 Cu 2 O 5 exhibits a remarkable enhancement in CH 4 selectivity compared to CuO (up to 9.59-folds), achieving a selectivity of 61.3% at 300 mA cm −2 and 58.4% at 400 mA cm −2 , together with good stability. In situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectra (ATR-FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the presence of the Y─O skeleton layer in Y 2 Cu 2 O 5 significantly enhances the adsorption of *CO intermediate, and accelerates its hydrogenation process, facilitating the conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 . This work highlights Y─O skeleton-mediated stabilization of Cu 2+ for efficient electroreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 , providing valuable insights into the design of efficient electrocatalysts for CO 2 conversion.

Ultrafast Peroxymonosulfate Activation via an Easily Synthesized Cobalt Cluster for Selective Cobalt(IV)═O Generation

Weifang Zhang,Lianyang Huang,Weijing Guo,Yuan Cheng,Menglu Zhang,Aristides Bakandritsos,Radek Zbořil,Chunli Wang

In Fenton-like reactions, the elevation of the spin state of transition metals enhances the redox processes of adsorbed peroxides and improves the oxidative performance. This study reports an easily accessible carbon-supported high-spin cobalt cluster, Co–NCs/C, which demonstrates enhanced kinetics through selective high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)═O) generation for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-induced catalytic oxidation. This catalyst achieves rapid degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within the modified kinetic rate constant (k-value) of 2001.7, surpassing all previously reported Co-based catalysts. Furthermore, combined experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate the stable size distribution of cobalt clusters anchored on carbon supports. Within a broad size distribution (0–6 nm), these clusters consistently retain high-spin configurations and exhibit excellent catalytic performance in SMX degradation. The tailored electronic structure of the high-spin Co sites enhances the adsorption and activation of PMS, thereby accelerating the degradation process. This work provides a practical and cost-effective strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for PMS-based advanced oxidation processes.

PtCu hydrogel self-supported metal–organic framework for sensitive electrochemical detection of o-sec-butylphenol

Zhehan Yang,Yijie Huang,Mingfang Yang,Ruiqi Wang,Xiaoyan Wu

Poor conductivity and insufficient structural stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) restrict their use in detecting water pollutants. In this work, a PtCu hydrogel was synthesized to support the Cu-BTC MOF (PtCu@Cu-BTC) by coordinating 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) directly on the surface of the PtCu hydrogel for the sensitive detection of o-sec-butylphenol (osBP). Importantly, the three-dimensional network structure of the PtCu hydrogel serves as a stable scaffold, providing a matrix to load metal ions that chelate with BTC. This approach not only enhances the structural stability of the MOFs but also greatly improves their electrical conductivity, allowing the catalyst to maintain consistent catalytic activity and stability during water pollutant detection. Additionally, the in situ formed Cu-BTC coordination layer increases the specific surface area, creating numerous active sites, and offers functional groups that promote pollutant adsorption, thereby significantly boosting sensor performance. The findings show that the developed biosensor has a strong linear response to osBP concentrations ranging from 3 to 100 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.68 μM. This work offers new insights for designing MOF-based functional materials that combine excellent conductivity with robust structural stability.

Synergistic lubrication of MXene/Bi₆O₇ heterostructures in polyimide composite coatings for enhanced tribological performance

Wangfei Shen,Qingzhe Zhang,Yingying Wang,Pu Zhang,Xiaoliang Zhang,Chunxia Wu,Cunxin Jia,Jingkang Liu,Xudong Xue,Yanming Wang

Two-dimensional lubricating fillers play a crucial role in strengthening the tribological performance of polymer coatings. In this study, MXene-PDA-Bi 6 O 7 (MXene/Bi 6 O 7 ) heterostructured composite nanofillers were prepared via a mussel-inspired chemical method. Polyimide (PI) composite coatings with varying MXene:Bi₆O₇ mass ratios were fabricated, and their microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological performance were systematically characterized. The loading of Bi 6 O 7 nanoflowers onto the surface of PDA-modified MXene was achieved through in situ assembly, resulting in the formation of MXene/Bi 6 O 7 heterostructures. The experimental results demonstrated that the synergistic effect of MXene and Bi 6 O 7 significantly enhanced the properties of the PI composite coatings. Specifically, when the MXene-to-Bi₆O₇ mass ratio was 4:6, the PI composite coatings exhibited an 11.2 % reduction in friction coefficient and a 70.5 % decrease in wear rate compared with pure PI. Additionally, the tensile strength of the PI matrix was increased to 185.99 MPa. The MXene/Bi 6 O 7 heterostructure effectively reduced direct contact between the friction pairs by forming a dense transfer membrane, thereby maintaining stable lubrication performance under a broad range of conditions. The study elucidates the role of two-dimensional heterostructures in enhancing the interfacial mechanics and tribological properties of polymers, providing theoretical guidance and technical routes for the development of high-performance abrasion-resistant polymer coating materials.

Ir single-atom sites stabilized by Ir-O-Ce4-δ coordination for high-efficiency PEMWE

Jianying Wang,Xu Luo,Tongzhou Li,Jingchen Na,Wanxiu Pang,Hongjie Zhang,Jinkai Hao,Zhigang Shao

Developing efficient and stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) offers a promising direction toward achieving economical and sustainable development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, their widespread application remains hindered by intrinsic stability challenges. Herein, we engineered an m-Ir SA -CeO 2 catalyst featuring an Ir-O-Ce 4-δ (0 < δ <1) coordination that delivered exceptional efficiency and stability in PEMWE. In this configuration, low-valent Ce species stabilized high-valent Ir active sites through lattice charge compensation, significantly enhancing catalyst activity and durability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations revealed electron transfer from Ir to Ce through the Ir-O-Ce 4-δ coordination, which optimized oxygen intermediate adsorption in the adsorbate evolution mechanism and reduced the ionic character of Ir O bonds to boost intrinsic activity and structural stability. The m-Ir SA -CeO 2 achieved a 267 mV overpotential with >500 h stability at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.1 M HClO 4 . Furthermore, the PEMWE electrolyzer employing the m-Ir SA -CeO 2 anode catalyst maintained stable operation at 100 mA cm −2 for >1000 h with an ultralow Ir loading of 0.12 mg cm −2 .

Modified polyether amine via alkylation and their demulsification performance for W/O crude oil emulsion

Shijie Tang,Jiaxue Li,Hailin Yang,Ming Duan,Shenwen Fang

This study evaluated the thermal and electrical dehydration performance of eight polyether amines with varying molecular weights and HLB values for W/O crude oil emulsion breaking before and after alkylation modification. The experimental results demonstrated that the dehydration rates of polyether amine both before and after modification were less than 30%. However, all polyether amines can enhance the electrical dehydration rate, with the modified polyether amines having higher dehydration rate. Specifically, the modified polyether amine P20-H2.8 achieved a dehydration rate of 64.29% under conditions of 4 kV, 60°C, and a dosage of 200 mg/L, which is 2.25 times higher than that without any chemical agent addition. Interfacial property studies revealed that the modified polyether amines exhibited superior interfacial activity and stronger ability to reduce the elastic modulus of the oil-water interface under the electric field, thereby contributing to their better demulsification performance. Nevertheless, the electrical dehydration rate of the modified polyether amine P20-H2.8 was still much lower than that of conventional block polyether demulsifier, indicating a need for further improvement in interfacial activity. Although the research results of polyether amines are not very good, it expands the research direction of demulsifiers and provides some new insights for demulsifier development.

o-Phenylenediamine derived carbon dots enable microfluidic-fluorometric detection of Chromium(VI) via charge transfer

Lei Zheng,Rongzhen Ma,Hong Liu,Changsheng Jiang,Cheng Song

A microfluidic-fluorometric platform integrated with carbon dots was developed for the real-time and sensitive detection of Chromium(VI) (Cr 6 + ). Chitosan and o-Phenylenediamine were used as precursors to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon dots (OPD-CDs) via a solvothermal method. The OPD-CDs exhibited a monodisperse spherical nanostructure with an average diameter of 3.86 ± 0.09 nm, a quantum yield of 36.77 %, and a surface enriched with amino and carboxyl functional groups. Cr 6+ induced selective fluorescence quenching through a charge transfer mechanism, where electron donation from surface amines suppressed radiative recombination, accompanied by emission red-shift and increased Stokes shift. Furthermore, quenched OPD-CDs was able to restore fluorescence by adding H 2 O 2 . OPD-CDs demonstrated a detection limit of 0.73 μM and a linear range of 0.2–210 μM under the conventional spectrofluorometry. When incorporated into a microfluidic chip, the OPD-CDs integrated platform achieved a rapid response within 1 min, a detection limit of 1.04 μM, and high selectivity against 26 potential interfering ions. Spike-recovery tests in tap and river water samples yielded recoveries of 98.6–104.7 % (RSD ≤ 2.2 %), confirming its practicality for on-site water quality monitoring. This study innovatively merges optoelectronics features of carbon dots with the microfluidic miniaturization, enabling portable and real-time monitoring of Cr 6+ , which highlights critical needs for rapid detection of heavy metals in accidental pollution events and water quality surveillance.

Architecture-engineered Fe₃O₄-MnO₂ composite for peroxydisulfate activation: Visible light-enhanced redox cycling mechanism

Yongzhi Tu,Ziming Zhang,Peien Huang,Jiale Zou,Zhi Xiong,Meiting Zheng,Zhifei Ma,Jianxin Chen

Unlike conventional Fe₃O₄-MnO₂ composites, an architecture-engineered Fe₃O₄-MnO₂ (FM-21) heterostructure was constructed by anchoring Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles onto α-MnO₂ nanorods. Under visible light irradiation, the FM-21/PDS system achieves 96.5 % Orange II degradation within 60 min with a kinetic rate constant of 0.0596 min −1 , significantly outperforming its individual components and dark condition controls. Multiple characterization techniques confirm that the unique interfacial configuration establishes a direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, substantially enhancing charge carrier separation efficiency. XPS analysis provides direct evidence that visible light accelerates the co-cycling of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox pairs, thereby maintaining highly efficient PDS activation. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis further reveal that the synergistic effect between radical and non-radical pathways, which is dominated by singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂) and holes (h + ), drives the degradation process. This mechanism enables the degradation of various pollutants with minimal dependence on their charge characteristics, demonstrating the catalyst's broad applicability. The catalyst also exhibits practical advantages including magnetic separability and stable performance over five consecutive cycles. This study demonstrates that the synthesized FM-21 exhibits significant potential for visible light-enhanced PDS activation in eliminating recalcitrant organic pollutants.

Synergistic coordination engineering and Gd–O species incorporation boost PtFe stability for oxygen reduction reaction

Yadong Li,Yajuan Zhang,Liang Lv,Liuyuan Han,Zhen Guo,Han-Pu Liang,Xilong Wang,Yousheng Yin

The rational design of Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts is vital to improve the durability and performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the instability caused by transition metal leaching and insufficient particle confinement remains a major challenge. Herein, the development of highly dispersed PtFe alloys with rare-earth Gd doping and carbon confinement (PtFeGd x /N–C) by a synergistic strategy of coordination engineering and Gd–O species incorporation is reported. A nitrogen-doped porous carbon support was synthesized via pyrolysis of ZIF-8 precursors containing EDTA-FeNa and Gd(NO 3 ) 3 , yielding uniformly dispersed Gd–Fe oxide domains. Subsequent wet impregnation and in situ alloying with H 2 PtCl 6 generated highly dispersed PtFeGd x nanoparticles. The optimized PtFeGd40/N–C catalyst exhibited a high half-wave potential of 0.94 V and a mass activity of 0.94 A mg Pt −1 , with only 0.5 % activity loss after 100,000 durability cycles. Structural characterizations confirmed strong coordination among Pt, Fe, and Gd, with Gd predominantly present as oxidized species. DFT calculations revealed that Gd and Gd–O doping effectively modulate the Pt d-band center, optimize intermediate adsorption energies, and reduce the reaction barrier to 0.332 eV. This work highlights the synergistic role of rare-earth doping and carbon confinement in enhancing ORR activity and stability, offering a promising strategy for the development of durable Pt-based electrocatalysts for PEMFCs.

Multi-omics Reveals that 4′-O-β-D-glucosyl-5-O-methylvisamminol Ameliorates Acute Liver Injury by Modulating the miR-30e-3p/Tfrc Axis and a Multi-Dimensional Network of Ferroptosis, Inflammation, Metabolism, and Gut Microbiota

Tingwen Zhang,Ruihong Zou,Zheng Chen,Yawei Li,Xin Sun,Xialin Sun

Background Overuse of acetaminophen (APAP) can induce acute liver injury (ALI), and its mechanism is closely related to ferroptosis. 4′-O-β-D-glucosyl-5-O-methylvisamminol (5-O) is a natural coumarin glycoside with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, but whether it can alleviate liver injury through intervention in ferroptosis and multi-dimensional mechanisms remains unclear. Purpose To explore whether 5-O can alleviate APAP-induced ALI through multiple mechanisms such as inhibiting ferroptosis, regulating inflammation, promoting lipid metabolism, and reshaping the intestinal microbiota . Methods Through in vitro and in vivo experiments, combined with CCK-8, Western blot, whole transcriptome sequencing, 16S rRNA sequencing, FMT and other techniques and methods, the mechanism of 5-O was evaluated from multiple levels such as cells, tissues, metabolism and flora. Results 5-O downregulated Tfrc/Slc39a14 in cells to reduce iron intake and upregulated Slc7a11/GPX4 to enhance antioxidant capacity. It reduced serum ALT/AST, alleviated liver tissue pathological damage, inhibited the expression of chemokines and inflammatory factors, and activated the PPARα-Fabp1/Me1 axis to promote lipid metabolism. Whole transcriptome analysis revealed that 5-O intervention was associated with upregulation of miR-30e-3p and downregulation of Tfrc, suggesting a potential role in modulating iron metabolism. Concurrently, the analysis indicated that 5-O treatment was linked to inhibition of the ferroptosis pathway and activation of the PPAR pathway. In addition, 5-O reshaped the intestinal microbiota, inhibited pro-inflammatory bacterial genera, and promoted the colonization of the probiotic Lactobacillus . Conclusion This study systematically clarified that the hepatoprotective effect of 5-O against APAP-induced liver injury is associated with a multi-dimensional network involving "ferroptosis-inflammation-metabolism-flora". The innovation lies in systematically elucidating the multi-faceted actions of a natural product, which may involve regulating ferroptosis through miR-30e-3p associated changes, cross-organ metabolic reprogramming, and microecological modulation. This work provides a candidate drug with multi-dimensional synergistic potential for the prevention and treatment of liver injury.

Metabolic Engineering of Escherichia coli for Hyperoside Biosynthesis

Guosi Li,Fucheng Zhu,Peipei Wei,Hailong Xue,Naidong Chen,Baowei Lu,Hui Deng,Cunwu Chen,Xinjian Yin

Hyperoside (quercetin 3-O-galactoside) exhibits many biological functions, along with higher bioactivities than quercetin. In this study, three UDP-dependent glycosyltransferases (UGTs) were screened for efficient hyperoside synthesis from quercetin. The highest hyperoside production of 58.5 mg·L−1was obtained in a recombinantEscherichia colico-expressing UGT fromPetunia hybrida(PhUGT) and UDP-glucose epimerase (GalE, a key enzyme catalyzing the conversion of UDP-glucose to UDP-galactose) fromE. coli. When additional enzymes (phosphoglucomutase (Pgm) and UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (GalU)) were introduced into the recombinantE. coli, the increased flux toward UDP-glucose synthesis led to enhanced UDP-galactose-derived hyperoside synthesis. The efficiency of the recombinant strain was further improved by increasing the copy number of the PhUGT, which is a limiting step in the bioconversion. Through the optimization of the fermentation conditions, the production of hyperoside increased from 245.6 to 411.2 mg·L−1. The production was also conducted using a substrate-fed batch fermentation, and the maximal hyperoside production was 831.6 mg·L−1, with a molar conversion ratio of 90.2% and a specific productivity of 27.7 mg·L−1·h−1after 30 h of fermentation. The efficient hyperoside synthesis pathway described here can be used widely for the glycosylation of other flavonoids and bioactive substances.Keywords:hyperoside;quercetin;UDP-dependent glycosyltransferase;UDP-glucose;metabolic engineering

Differentiation of isomeric methylanilines by imidization and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis

Mengmeng Chen,Guohua Zhu,Jiaxiang Xu,Huarong Zhang,Jinsong Liu,Kezhi Jiang

Rationale Carcinogenic o -methylaniline is one of the banned aromatic amines in azo dyes, but it is very difficult to distinguish it from its noncarcinogenic isomers due to their identical retention time on chromatography and similar mass spectra. Methods Imidization of the isomeric methylanilines was carried out by treatment with benzaldehyde under mild conditions. The formed derivatives were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Theoretical calculations were carried out on the Gaussian 03 program by using the density functional theory method at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. Results Imidization of methylanilines occurred easily and gave rise to the corresponding N -methylbenzylidene benzenamines. The isomeric derivatives were completely separated by GC, and thus the three isomeric methylanilines could be determined simultaneously. Due to the ortho effect, the derivative from o -methylaniline has a characteristic fragment ion at m/z 118 with a stable bicyclic structure, and it could be easily differentiated from the meta - and para -isomers in electron ionization mass spectrometry. Conclusions These results provided a promising solution for simultaneous determination of isomeric methylanilines.
