5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the promising chemicals, which can serve as a platform chemical to produce various energy chemicals. HMF can be produced from different lignocellulosic biomass derived sugars employing different catalytic processes. In this study, the synthesis of HMF was investigated from excessively available sucrose using environment friendly and cost-effective technology . Among the various solvents applied, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was found as an efficient organic solvent medium. The results elucidated the combination of p -toluenesulfonic acid ( p TSA) and chromium chloride (CrCl 3 .6H 2 O) as the best dehydrating catalyst. A relatively higher HMF yield of 55% was achieved at a lower temperature (120 ℃) while at 150 ℃ (higher temperature) oxalic acid with higher concentration of CrCl 3 .6H 2 O gave a maximum yield of 59.21%. The time, temperature, and concentrations affected the yields. The positive impact was found with a rise in temperature from 100 to 120 ℃ in p TSA while oxalic acid affected the yield until 150 ℃. HMF yields were reported in descending order as p TSA > oxalic acid > maleic acid > malonic acid > succinic acid > blank at 120 ℃. It was observed that the isomerization of glucose to fructose is the major barrier to achieve the high process yield. Therefore, more efforts should be made to achieve the high rate of isomerization of glucose (part of sucrose disaccharide) in order to improve the HMF selectivity by depressing the humin formation.

5-methyl-3,5-dipropyl-2-pyrazoline is an intermediate for the preparation of new high energy fuels. In this paper, chloroaluminate ionic liquids ([Bmim]Cl-xAlCl 3 , x = 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0) were applied as green catalysts for the synthesis of 5-methyl-3,5-dipropyl-2-pyrazoline through the intramolecular cyclization reaction of 2-pentyl ketazine. The effects of temperature, acidity and dosage of ionic liquids on the cyclization reaction were studied in detail and the highest catalytic performance was under the conditions as 110 °C, [Bmim]Cl-1.6AlCl 3 and 10% of 2-pentyl ketazine. With the theoretical simulations, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed as the hydrogen-like interaction between Al ([Bmim] + AlCl 4 − ) and N1 atoms, which increases the charge of N2 atoms, thereby improving its nucleophilicity and further making it undergo intramolecular addition reaction with methyl. This study will provide guidance for the green preparation of 5-methyl-3,5-dipropyl-2-pyrazoline.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a valuable and essential platform chemical for establishing a sustainable, eco-friendly fine-chemical and pharmaceutical industry based on biomass. The cost-effective production of HMF from abundant C6 sugars requires mild reaction temperatures and efficient catalysts from naturally abundant materials. Herein, we report how fulvic acid forms complexes with Al 3+ ions that exhibit solar absorption and photocatalytic activity for glucose conversion to HMF in one-pot reaction, in good yield (~60%) and at moderate temperatures (80 °C). When using representative components of fulvic acid, catechol and pyrogallol as ligands, 70 and 67% HMF yields are achieved, respectively, at 70 °C. Al 3+ ions are not recognised as effective photocatalysts; however, complexing them with fulvic acid components as light antennas can create new functionality. This mechanism offers prospects for new green photocatalytic systems to synthesise a range of substances that have not previously been considered.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass derivative 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising strategy to promote the utilization of renewable energy resource. However, the intrinsic activity of catalysts is still limited by the insufficient configuration of electronic structure. In this work, Mn 3 O 4 /CeO 2 heterostructure with Mn 4+ sites have been successfully constructed for efficient HMF oxidation. CeO 2 not only serves as an active center, but also enhances the affinity of reaction intermediates and adjusts the electronic structure of Mn species (Mn 3+ + Ce 4+ ↔ Mn 4+ + Ce 3+ ). More high-valent Mn 4+ /Ce 4+ sites have been exposed through the electrochemical reconstruction, contributing to 97.95 % FDCA yield and 97.77 % Faraday efficiency (FE) (0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl). Therefore, this work provides a new insight of Mn 4+ for boosting HMF oxidation, which is essential for exploring the efficient catalyst in the field of biomass conversion.

CaO-doped γ-Al2O3 beads were prepared by an alginate assisted sol–gel method, followed by grafting with alkyl groups and impregnation of NbCl5 to construct multi-functionalized γ-Al2O3 beads for efficient catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Doping with CaO improved the binding capacity of the catalyst with glucose and increased the Lewis acid amount. However, a high CaO content would cover the Lewis acid sites of γ-Al2O3, resulting in a lower isomeric conversion of glucose to fructose. When the C8–Ca(10%)–γ-Al2O3 catalyst was loaded with Nb2O5, intermediate fructose was consumed rapidly resulting in complete conversion of glucose, which indicated that conversion of glucose to 5-HMF involved the isomeric conversion of glucose to fructose followed by dehydration of fructose to 5-HMF. This was necessary to balance hydrophilic isomerization reactions with restraining the rehydration of 5-HMF by hydrophobic modification. This is similar to the reaction in which a medium with a certain amount of water was beneficial for glucose isomerization. Under the synergistic effect of Lewis acid provided by γ-Al2O3 and Brønsted acid offered by Nb2O5, C8–Ca(10%)–γ-Al2O3–Nb(3%), a glucose conversation rate of 100% and the highest yield of 5-HMF (68.4%) were achieved in the reaction medium with a dimethylsulfoxide/H2O (V/V) ratio of 4 : 1, a catalyst amount of 33 mg, a reaction temperature of 140 °C and a reaction time of 4 h.

Graphical Transfer hydrogenation : 5-Methylfurfural (5-MF), a promising C 6 platform molecule, is directly produced from biomass-derived carbohydrates by iodide-mediated transfer hydrogenation. Under the optimized conditions, 30–50 % of 5-MF is yielded from low-cost sugars and starch with 5-MF productivity as high as 103 mmol g cat −1 h −1 . The catalytic system is simple, robust, recyclable, and preferable to other approaches for the production of 5-MF. Herein, a robust catalytic system was developed for the green synthesis of 5-methylfurfural (5-MF) by iodide-mediated transfer hydrogenation. Around 50 % of 5-MF was yielded from d -fructose within 7.5 min using NaI as the catalyst and formic acid as both the hydrogen source and co-catalyst. The catalytic system was used for six consecutive cycles without any decrease in the yield. Various starch and raw biomass could be used as promising starting materials for 5-MF synthesis with moderate yields, and the productivity of 5-MF from corn starch reached 103 mmol g cat −1 h −1 , which is comparable with the best result from l -rhamnose. Moreover, the co-production of 5-MF and furfural from raw biomass makes this methodology more competitive than other routes.

Synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from carbohydrates was achieved over the homogeneous catalyst acid poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSS). The various reaction conditions like reaction temperature, reaction time, various solvent, solvent volume, and catalyst dosages were explored. The results showed that the PSS catalyst resulted in 86.8% HMF yield from fructose and 48.5% HMF yield from glucose in solvent 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dimethyl sulfoxide, respectively. The catalyst has reused five cycles without obviously reduced on HMF yield, suggesting that PSS showed high catalytic activity at recycle experiment. Thus, PSS was a potential candidate for homogeneous catalyst acids and can convert carbohydrate compound into HMF conveniently. Graphical Abstract

High-performance zeolite socony mobil five (ZSM-5) membranes were successfully prepared on a cheap, tubular α-Al 2 O 3 support via a proposed wet gel conversion (WGC), aiming at avoiding the competitive zeolite crystals growth in the solution and ensuring the formation of polycrystalline zeolite layer onto the support surface. A small amount of gel was loaded on seeded tubes via dip-coating and then converted to ZSM-5 membranes via direct crystallization without using any additional synthesis solution for membrane growth. By using this method, the amount of synthetic gel was largely reduced as compared with the traditional hydrothermal synthesis . The effects of crystallization temperature, crystallization duration, and synthetic gel silica source dissolution duration on the morphologies, microstructures, and pervaporation performances of ZSM-5 membranes were investigated. Under optimized synthesis conditions, the as-synthesized ZSM-5 membrane showed high separation performance and stability in isopropanol dehydration. During the 104-h pervaporation test, the permeation flux was stable at 2.96 kg m −2 h −1 with a separation coefficient exceeding 10,000. The synthetic route exhibited excellent reproducibility for the fabrication of highly water-selective ZSM-5 membrane. This work provides a novel, feasible method for the preparation of zeolite membranes with high performance, high atom economy, low cost, and reduced waste solution.

In this study, silica-tin oxide composites (xSiSnO) and a H 3 PO 4 modified 20SiSnO (SiSnPO) have been synthesized via a simple procedure and evaluated for the catalytic dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). FTIR, XPS, UV–vis, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-FTIR characterizations revealed that Sn species were possibly inserted into the framework structure of silica to generate weak-to-medium Lewis acid sites; besides, calcining H 3 PO 4 impregnated 20SiSnO obviously improved the Brønsted acid sites. When the 20SiSnO/HCl combined catalysts were used, a high HMF yield of 75.5% was achieved in DMSO/H 2 O at 160 °C for 60 min, and the 20SiSnO showed relatively high stability even under thermal acidic environment. By utilizing the multifunctional SiSnPO as catalyst, an inspiringly high HMF yield was also reached (70.3%), and the SiSnPO exhibited reasonable recyclability for glucose dehydration. Furthermore, the possible reaction pathway of glucose dehydration over SiSnPO catalyst has been discussed.

Herein we present a simple fluorescence quenching method to selectively recognise and determine L-tryptophan (L-Trp) out of other 19 natural amino acids. Methylpillar[5]arene (MeP5), which is employed as a macrocyclic fluorescent probe, exhibits fluorescence activity in the solution of poor solvents because of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. Fluorescence quenching of MeP5 in the solution of EtOH/CH 2 Cl 2 (98/2, v/v) was observed upon the addition of L-Trp whereas other 19 natural amino acids did not bring about obvious change in fluorescence intensity. 1 H NMR titration, fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and theoretical analysis revealed that L-Trp can be encapsulated into the cavity of MeP5 to form a stable 1:1 host–guest inclusion complex which accounts for the quenching characteristics. The proposed procedure in this investigation offers an attractive and promising method for the selective detection of L-Trp in a mixture of natural amino acids.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods to upgrade biomass pyrolysis oil, but the development of a low-cost, high-performance HDO catalyst still faces enormous challenges. In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). In addition, the guaiacol reaction network is provided.

A heterogeneous cobalt-phosphonate network catalyst, [Co2(2,2′-bipy)(H4L)(H2O)]H2O (Co318), was synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. The combination of Brønsted acid (–PO3H2) and Lewis acid (Co2+) sites makes Co318 an efficient catalyst for the conversion of saccharides to HMF. Under optimized conditions, glucose was quantitatively consumed and the yield of HMF was as high as 92%. Co318 was recycled four times without the loss of catalytic activity. When microcrystalline cellulose and regenerated cellulose were used, the yields of HMF were 33% and 50%, respectively, at 10 wt% catalyst loading. The yield of HMF increased to 59% when the loading of Co318 was increased to 40 wt%. GC-MS analysis confirmed that the reaction mixture contained both glucose and fructose intermediates, proving that the conversion of cellulose to HMF involved three steps: hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, isomerization of glucose to fructose, and dehydration of fructose to HMF.
