Due to their high specific surface area and good electric conductivity, nitrogen-doped porous carbons (NPCs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention for electrochemical energy storage applications. In the present work, we firstly prepared MWCNT/ZIF-8 composites by decoration of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) onto the surface of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), then obtained MWCNT/NPCs by the direct carbonization of MWCNT/ZIF-8. By controlling the reaction conditions, MWCNT/ZIF-8 with three different particle sizes were synthesized. The effect of NPCs size on capacitance performance has been evaluated in detail. The MWCNT/NPC with large-sized NPC (MWCNT/NPC-L) displayed the highest specific capacitance of 293.4 F g−1 at the scan rate of 5 mV s−1 and only lost 4.2% of capacitance after 10 000 cyclic voltammetry cycles, which was attributed to the hierarchically structured pores, N-doping and high electrical conductivity. The studies of symmetric two-electrode supercapacitor cells also confirmed MWCNT/NPC-L as efficient electrode materials that have good electrochemical performance, especially for high-rate applications.

It was found that 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene was a suitable swelling agent, which worked effectively in the pluronic-P123-templated synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/silica composites when a moderate amount was added. The pore diameter of the foams in resulting composites increased to 50–60 nm when the 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene /P123 weight ratio of 3/4 was used during the synthesis. In addition, the composite with enlarged diameter of foams showed superior adsorption capacity to phthalic acid (H 2 -PA) at 20 °C in comparison with aggregated bulk zeolitic imidazolate framework-8. Dyes exposure in aquatic environment creates risks to human health and biota due to their intrinsic toxic mutagenic and carcinogenic characteristics. In this work, a metal-organic frameworks materials, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), was synthesized through hydrothermal reaction for the adsorptive removal of harmful Congo red (CR) from aqueous solution. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of CR onto ZIF-8 was ultrahigh as 1250 mg g−1. Adsorption behaviors can be successfully fitted by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm equation. Solution conditions (pH condition and the co-exist anions) may influent the adsorption behaviors. The adsorption performance at various temperatures indicated the process was a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption reaction. The enhanced adsorption capacity was determined due to large surface area of ZIF-8 and the strong interactions between surface groups of ZIF-8 and CR molecules including the electrostatic interaction between external active sites Zn−OH on ZIF-8 -and −SO3 or –N=N– sites in CR molecule, and the π–π interaction.

Separating butanol/water mixtures via distillation is notably energy-intensive and costly, highlighting the urgent need for more efficient alternatives. This study introduces a novel approach using mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) infused with Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) transformed into its porous liquid (PL) form, aimed at enhancing the separation efficiency of butanol/water mixtures through pervaporation (PV). We selected ZIF-8 for its hydrophobic nature and high surface area, which are critical for improving both flux and selectivity in membrane-based separation processes. The study details the synthesis of ZIF-8-PL, its characterization through techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the fabrication of the MMMs. Our results demonstrate that ZIF-8-PL-based membranes at 55°C with a 30 wt% PL loading significantly enhance biobutanol-selective PV efficiency. Specifically, these membranes show an improvement in flux of approximately 102% and an increase in separation factor by 64% when compared to unmodified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. This significant enhancement highlights the effectiveness of PL-based fillers in advancing MMM performance for biofuel separation, providing a promising route to optimize energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in industrial scale applications.

The high cost and low adsorption capacity of primary metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) limit their application in heavy metal removal. In this paper, Co/Zn bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized with excellent adsorption performance for As 5+ . The adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min and the maximum adsorption was 250.088 mg/g. In addition, Co-ZIF-8 showed strong selective adsorption of As 5+ . The adsorption process model of Co-ZIF-8 fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 =0.997) and Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 =0.994), and it is demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent is a single layer of chemical adsorption. In addition, when the adsorbent enters the arsenic-containing solution, the surface of Co-ZIF-8 is hydrolyzed to produce a large number of Co-OH active sites, and As 5+ arrives at the surface of Co-ZIF-8 by electrostatic adsorption and combines with the active sites to generate the arsenic-containing complex As-O-Co. After four cycles, Co-ZIF-8 showed 80% adsorption of As 5+ . This study not only provides a new method to capture As 5+ in water by preparing MOF with partial replacement of the central metal, but also has great significance for the harmless disposal of polluted water.

Given the increasing contamination of freshwater supplies, it is essential to effectively treat industrial wastewater. However, treating industrial wastewater using a single method is challenging due to the presence of complex contaminants like petroleum, organic dyes, bacteria, and other complex contaminants. In this study, we present a straightforward and scalable approach to prepare multifunctional nanocellulose-based membranes (NM) that exhibit superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning, oil/water separation, photocatalysis, and anti-bioadhesion properties. To begin with, we created NM by extruding fiber slurry onto a stencil and drying it. Next, we built a polyurethane (PU)/ZIF‐8/1H, 1H, 2H, 2H‐perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS)-based superhydrophobic layer by spraying it over the NM's surface. By employing the aforementioned processes, we successfully integrated multiple functions into a single superhydrophobic NM. Our results demonstrate that the NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane exhibits superior hydrophobicity performance, with a high-water contact angle (166.8 ± 0.8°) and a low rolling angle (5 ± 0.3°). Moreover, these samples retain high-water contact angles and low rolling angles even in harsh environments such as acid and alkali solutions, high temperatures, abrasion resistance, UV aging resistance, bending and folding, tape peeling, and self-cleaning. The NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane also exhibits high and stable oil-water separation performance, with a separation efficiency of 94.6% and a relatively high separation flux (133.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). At the same time, the NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane exhibits water-in-oil emulsion separation ability. The membrane’s stability, effectiveness, and reusability were demonstrated through ten repetitions of degradation experiments using aqueous methylene blue solution, with the NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane exhibiting an excellent degradation rate (>94%). Finally, the bioadhesion resistance test indicated a reduction of 69.1% in the adhesion rate of the NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane. Overall, the creation of the NM-PU/ZIF-8/POTS membrane serves as a useful inspiration for the practical application of superhydrophobic NM in multifunctional integration, while also broadening the scope of membrane applications.

Ciprofloxacin accumulates in aqueous environment due to its non-degradability. Photocatalysis, as an economical and efficient treatment technology for organic matter, is mostly used to remove antibiotics from water environment. However, the photocatalytic performance is limited by photocatalysts, which suffer from wide band gap and severe recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Therefore, we developed a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl, which was synthesized by combining pre-prepared Fe-ZIF-8 with AgCl. Meanwhile, the X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to characterize the structure of Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl, and a series of photoelectric tests were conducted to demonstrate the photocatalytic properties of Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl. The results revealed that Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl had a remarkable 71.9 % removal efficiency of ciprofloxacin by photodegradation in 120 min. Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl could help reduce band gap energy, inhibit the recombination of photoelectrons and holes, lower the charge transfer resistance, and enhance the photocurrent response. Furthermore, Fe-ZIF-8@AgCl still maintained a high photocatalytic performance after 4 cycles, and ·O 2 - was detected and identified as the main photocatalytic active factor. Subsequently, the charge transfer mechanism of direct Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed, and the photocatalytic degradation pathways of ciprofloxacin were analyzed. In this study, Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared and showed great potential for efficient photodegradation of ciprofloxacin.

Luteolin, a naturally occurring pharmaceutical compound with significant antitumor properties, faces challenges in clinical applications due to its low solubility in water and limited bioavailability. To address these issues, a one-step synthesis method was employed to encapsulate luteolin within ZIF-8. The successful preparation of luteolin@ ZIF-8 nanoparticles was confirmed through various analytical techniques, including fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), laser size distribution analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and release curve assessment. Results indicate that the formulated luteolin@ ZIF-8 nanoparticles exhibited high drug loading (1360 mg/g) and demonstrated selective drug release in acidic microenvironments. Furthermore, the encapsulation of luteolin increased the size of ZIF-8 from 168.4 ± 0.2 nm to 384.7 ± 1.4 nm, but did not change its crystalline structure significantly. Notably, the results of in vitro anti-cervical and prostate cancers experiments revealed that luteolin@ ZIF-8 had better efficacy in inhibiting the proliferation and migration of HeLa and PC3 cells than free luteolin. The antitumor activity of luteolin@ ZIF-8 was sustained for 72 h, with a particularly pronounced inhibitory effect on HeLa cells as compared to PC3 cells. This study underscores the effective enhancement of luteolin's antitumor activity through encapsulation in ZIF-8, offering substantial implications for improving its clinical applications.

The thermal stability of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has received attention, but its thermal stabilization mechanism needs further clarification. Herein, the stearic acid-modified ZIF-8 with high specific surface area and large pore volume was effectively synthesized by using zinc stearate as the zinc source for the first time. Modification of stearic acid results in larger adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 for HCl and better thermal stability effect for PVC, especially long-term thermal stability. Moreover, the thermal stability mechanism of ZIF-8 for PVC was demonstrated by experiments and theoretical calculations. In addition to absorbing HCl to eliminate autocatalytic degradation of PVC, ZIF-8 disintegrates and may form 2-methylimidazole-Zn-Cl salt complex instead of free ZnCl2, avoiding the negative zinc burning effect. Furthermore, the Diels-Alder reaction between imidazole ring and degraded PVC prevents the extension of the conjugated double bonds of PVC and delays the deepening of the color of PVC.

The highly toxic and recalcitrant organic pollutant, 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), is commonly found in wastewater. Therefore, it is critical to investigate novel techniques for the efficient removal of 2,4-DCP from wastewater. The present study employed a one-step synthesis method to fabricate ZIF-8/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZIF-8/MWCNTs) nanocomposites with well-defined mesoporous structures, which were subsequently coated onto carbon cloth (CC) to form the anode ZIF-8/MWCNTs/CC. Subsequently, the adsorption performance of ZIF-8/MWCNTs toward 2,4-DCP and the adsorption-electrochemical degradation performance of ZIF-8/MWCNTs/CC toward 2,4-DCP were investigated. ZIF-8/MWCNTs exhibit exceptional adsorption capacity and rate toward the 2,4-DCP. At 303 K, it achieved a saturated adsorption amount as high as 1056.78 mg·g - 1 within only 30 min of reaching equilibrium. Moreover, when coated on CC substrates, the internal pore structure of ZIF-8/MWCNTs is effectively exploited during the adsorption. In addition, the incorporation of MWCNTs enhances the conductivity of the ZIF-8/MWCNTs/CC electrodes, leading to reduced resistance and improved electron transfer rate. Notably, ZIF-8/MWCNTs/CC enabled complete removal of a 25 mg·L -1 solution of 2,4-DCP within only 90 min and a 50 mg·L -1 solution within 120 min. Furthermore, the degradation mechanism of 2,4-DCP was analyzed by means of DFT modeling theoretical calculations and intermediate product determination analysis, while evaluating the toxicity of the generated material was evaluated. This study provides improved solutions and strategies for the treatment of chlorophenolic compound pollution in wastewater.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection can cause a variety of tumors and is one of the leading causes of death in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. As a small molecule antiviral drug, ganciclovir (GCV) can be used for anti-KSHV treatment. However, GCV has non-specific action and toxic side effects in vivo, and how to make it safer and more effective against KSHV is still a great challenge. By encapsulating GCV into metal–organic skeleton material zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and further modification of hyaluronic acid (HA), the nanomedical delivery system of GCV (HA/GCV@ZIF-8) has been developed for efficient GCV delivery and targeted anti-KSHV treatment. The modification of HA leads to the targeted binding of the nanocomplex with the overexpressed CD44 receptors in tumor cell membranes, resulting in the increased accumulation and cellular uptake of GCV. Exploiting the decomposition property of ZIF-8 under acidic conditions, the nanocomplex exhibits pH-responsive drug release in slightly acidic tumor environment. In addition, HA/GCV@ZIF-8 not only suppresses expression of KSHV pathogenic genes with less drug dose, but also inhibits the ability of cell proliferation and migration. In vivo anti-tumor results showed that HA/GCV@ZIF-8 accumulated in tumor cells and effectively inhibited tumor growth. The results open a gate for the targeted anti-KSHV treatment. Graphical
