Preparation and Thermal Insulation Properties of PET/Silica Aerogel Composite Fibers

Peng Zhao,Hena Ming,Lianyi Hu,Qin Wang,Rui Zhang,Xiaoqing Guo,Chuanjie Zhang,Jie Liu

Silica aerogel is a nanostructured material with high specific surface area, high porosity, low density and excellent heat insulation properties. These properties offer exciting applications in thermal fabric. But the weak mechanical properties caused by the hydrophilicity limit its further development and application. In this study, Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) is used as a precursor to introduce methyl groups to induce hydrophobicity in aerogels and ambient pressure drying is used for the preparation of hydrophobic silica aerogels and the optimal preparation conditions are investigated. Meanwhile, silica aerogel particles modified by γ-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570) with excellent dispersity and high thermal performance are integrated into polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via the melt blending method, and then processed into PET/silica aerogel composite fibers through melt spinning. The results demonstrated that the hydrophobic silica aerogels prepared via ambient pressure drying process using MTMS as a precursor eliminated the need for post-synthesis hydrophobic modification, thereby avoiding pollution caused by organic solvents and hydrophobic modifiers. The obtained silica aerogels exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and thermal insulation performance, with a density of 0.14 g·cm −3 , a porosity of 93.6%, a thermal conductivity of 0.032 W·m −1 ·K −1 , and a water contact angle of 137.1°. Furthermore, the incorporation of silica aerogel particles into PET fibers reduced the calculated thermal conductivity based on an idealized thermal conductivity model from 0.0899 to 0.0564 W·m −1 ·K −1 , corresponding to a 37.3% reduction. These results demonstrate that the PET/silica aerogel composite fibers possess excellent thermal insulation performance. Therefore, the developed composite fibers show great potential for applications in extreme environments where both superior thermal insulation and hydrophobicity are required.

Sustainable Biomass-Caffeic Acid Hybrid Adhesives via Dynamic Covalent and Metal–Ligand Coordination Networks

Liutao Hou,Haoyu Li,Jianwei Guo,Xupeng Liang,Yanyan Guo,Chun Chang

Adhesives are crucial for bonding diverse substrates in electronics, aerospace, and precision manufacturing, but traditional ones suffer from insufficient durability, poor low-temperature performance, and limited environmental adaptability. This study develops a high-performance supramolecular adhesive (poly(Cu-BTC-CA)) via a stepwise polymerization strategy: Cu-BTC (MOF) is synthesized first, then functionalized with caffeic acid (CA) to form a dual cross-linked porous network. FT-IR confirms coordination/polymerization interactions. Poly(Cu-BTC-CA) shows robust adhesion to diverse substrates, including stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and glass. More remarkably, this MOF-based adhesive exhibits a distinctive low-temperature reinforcement effect, with its adhesion strength on stainless steel increasing to 6.2 MPa at −80°C—a counterintuitive enhancement rather than the usual decline. It also retains effective bonding after exposure to liquid nitrogen (−196°C), with partial recovery upon warming to room temperature. In addition, the adhesive demonstrates outstanding macroscopic load-bearing performance: a mere 62.5 mg of material over a 625 mm 2 overlap area can stably support a 30 kg load without interfacial debonding. This work provides a novel design for adhesives with excellent strength, wide temperature adaptability, and great potential for extreme-environment applications.

Enhanced Ethanol Resistance of Crosslinked PMMA Films With Retained Optical Clarity and Improved Toughness

Ting Song,Shuxin Cao,Tao Song,Guidong Li,Zhibin Luo,Cuiqin Pan,Chun Li,Yuqing Li

The inherent poor solvent resistance and brittleness of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) limit its applications requiring frequent ethanol disinfection, where the material is susceptible to cracking and failure. A crosslinked system is designed to improve the ethanol resistance of PMMA. To preserve the optical properties of crosslinked PMMA, varying molar ratios of the comonomer butyl methacrylate, which imparts additional free volume to compensate for transmittance loss of the final crosslinked material, are pre-copolymerized with MMA to obtain copolymer syrups. Crosslinked films are then fabricated via one-pot in situ polymerization and crosslinking by casting copolymer syrups containing the crosslinker 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate. The crosslinked film with the highest crosslinking density (5 mol% crosslinker) possesses the maximum strength retention rates of 101.5% and 68.7% after immersion in ethanol for 5 min and 24 h, respectively. It represents a significant improvement over the pure PMMA, which retained only 93.8% and 53.8% under same conditions. Although crosslinked structures generally sacrifice the transmittance of optical resins, the 5 mol% crosslinked film exhibited the lowest transmittance (92.0% ± 0.6%), only slightly lower than that of pure PMMA (92.3% ± 0.2%). The toughness crosslinked films varied from 2.7 to 1.2 MJ/m 3 , which exceeded that of pure PMMA (1.0 MJ/m 3 ).

Coordination-Driven Homogeneous Eutectogel With Simultaneous Ultrahigh Toughness and Optical Transparency

Ziqian Xu,Rui Wang,Jianxiong Cheng,Qiang Dou,Linlin Wu

Deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based eutectogels are promising ionotronic materials; however, achieving high mechanical toughness and optical transparency simultaneously remains challenging, as conventional reinforcement strategies typically rely on phase separation that inevitably induces structural opacity. Here, we report a coordination-driven homogeneous eutectogel constructed via copolymerization of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 1-vinylimidazole (VI) in a ZnCl 2 –acetamide (AcAm) Type IV DES, where ZnCl 2 serves as both solvent component and intrinsic coordination cross-linking precursor, enabling a uniform network without additional metal salts. Strong Zn 2+ –imidazole coordination acts as dynamic cross-linking points within the PHEMA-based network, forming a hybrid structure capable of efficient energy dissipation. At an optimized 30 wt% copolymer content with a HEMA:VI ratio of 6:4, the eutectogel exhibits ultrahigh transparency (> 90%), high tensile strength (6.99 MPa), large elongation at break (1770%), and a toughness of 85.01 MJ m −3 . In contrast, hydrogen-bond-dominated ChCl–AcAm systems show negligible strength (< 0.12 MPa), highlighting the essential role of coordination-mediated reinforcement. Furthermore, abundant coordination and polar interactions endow the eutectogel with robust adhesion. The introduction of BMIMCl ionic liquid further enhances ionic conductivity while preserving mechanical integrity and stable sensing performance. This work demonstrates a coordination-driven strategy for homogeneous eutectogels combining mechanical robustness and optical transparency.

Facile Fabrication and Self-Cleaning Performance of a Liquid-Like Transparent Slippery Coating

Shu Qiu,Siwen Zhang,Xue Zhang,Ziming Tang,Jin Yang,Jicheng Xu

To address the challenges of surface contamination on glass, poor durability of conventional self-cleaning coatings, and the resulting loss of optical transmittance, this work reports on a transparent slippery coating based on a “liquid-like” interface design. The coating was constructed on glass via chemical grafting using an aminosilane coupling agent and monoglycidyl ether-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This formed a cross-linked Si–O–Si network with covalently anchored flexible PDMS brushes, creating a stable liquid-like interface. Owing to the rapid rotation and conformational changes of PDMS segments that endow the surface with liquid-like mobility, the coating exhibited excellent slippery properties with visible-light transmittance above 90%, a water contact angle of 90.2°–110.5°, and a sliding angle of 7.5–9.7. Furthermore, the coating displayed significant repellency toward various liquids with surface tensions ranging from 21.8 to 72.75 mN/m. Under harsh environmental conditions, including a broad temperature range (20°C–90°C), wide pH range (1–14), and high salt concentrations (≤ 250 g/L), the coating maintained stable wetting behavior and slippery performance. Additionally, it demonstrated good UV resistance mechanical wear durability, and efficient self-cleaning capability in simulated contamination experiments. This study provides a feasible material design and fabrication strategy for developing transparent self-cleaning coatings with high performance and long-term durability.

Design of Sandwich-Structured Flexible Meta-Aramid Composite Paper With Enhanced Breakdown Strength Over a Wide Temperature Range

Guangyu Duan,Fengying Hu,Yahang Shi,Yinxing Li,Yuhang Wang,Jiucheng Zhu,Zuming Hu

Conventional meta-aramid paper, typically composed of poly( m -phenylenediamine isophthalamide) (PMIA) chopped fibers and fibrids, is inherently limited by high internal porosity and surface roughness, which severely restricts its reliability in high electric fields. Herein, interface engineering was employed to fabricate sandwich-structured composite papers via an impregnation strategy by combining poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with etched meta-aramid paper. During this process, PMMA not only infiltrates the internal pores but also forms encapsulating surface layers on both sides of meta-aramid paper, establishing a dense, robust architecture. Driven by the synergistic effects of multiple interfacial structures and hydrogen bonds between PMMA and meta-aramid paper, the resulting composite papers exhibit significantly enhanced tensile strength across a wide temperature range. Notably, the breakdown strength of PMMA/meta-aramid/PMMA composite paper reaches 57.1 MV/m at room temperature (RT) and remains at 46.9 MV/m at 100°C, representing remarkable 2.1- and 1.8-fold improvements compared to pristine meta-aramid paper. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and finite element simulations elucidate that the wide-bandgap PMMA effectively inhibits electron transition, while the PMMA layers significantly redistribute electric field within the meta-aramid paper. Consequently, this work offers a novel strategy for developing high-performance meta-aramid insulating materials tailored for demanding wide-temperature applications.

Preparation and Mechanism Analysis of Hyperbranched Polymer Shale Inhibitor With Multiple Adsorption Sites

Junhao Fan,Jinsheng Sun,Zongwu Lu,Yiheng Huang,Guiqing Xu,Ting Liao,Fubo Ma,Jian Li

Polymer shale inhibitor is an indispensable additive for high-performance water-based drilling fluid due to its excellent high temperature resistance and high inhibition. However, in the high temperature environment of deep and ultra deep wells, conventional linear polymer shale inhibitors have poor rheological properties and limited adsorption sites, leading to shale hydration and expansion, wellbore instability and drilling safety accidents. Therefore, this paper innovatively prepared multi adsorption site hyperbranched superpolymer shale inhibitor (HPN-ADNL). At the same time, the same functional monomer was used to synthesize linear polymer shale inhibitor (ADNL) for comparative evaluation. It is found that HPN-ADNL has a highly branched three-dimensional network structure, and the initial degradation temperature can reach 246°C. Under the condition of adding 1 wt% HPN-ADNL, the linear expansion rate of bentonite pellets decreased from 77.34% to 27.76%, and the rolling recovery rate of shale at 180°C increased from 25.72% to 82.16%. Hyperbranched polymer HPN-ADNL has better inhibition performance than linear polymer ADNL. The unique hyperbranched structure of HPN-ADNL makes it have more adsorption sites, interact more closely with shale, and show excellent inhibition. The development and mechanism analysis of HPN-ADNL provide technical support for the efficient and safe drilling of deep and ultra deep wells.

Effect of Directionally Aligned Channels in Composite Hydrogels on Solar Steam Generation and Adsorption of Perfluorooctanoic Acid

Jingjing Wang,Xin Liu,Huanghui Yao,Aichao Liu,Jianmin Wang,Kai Zhang

Solar-powered steam generation is acknowledged as a highly efficient method for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. However, simultaneous generation of fresh water and removal of pollutants is still challenging for the treatment of saline wastewater containing organic pollutants. Herein, composite hydrogels with vertically aligned channels were prepared by directional freezing technology. The formation of vertical channels could greatly reduce mass transfer resistance and improve both interfacial evaporation rate and adsorption rate of pollutants. Compared to the non-vertically aligned composite hydrogel, this uniquely structured hydrogel exhibited superior desalination performance, attaining an evaporation rate of 1.99 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and an energy conversion efficiency of 94.36% when exposed to one sun's illumination. Meanwhile, the hydrogel evaporator showed outstanding salt resistance even in the evaporation of brine with high salinity and stable desalination performance over successive evaporation for 10 cycles. In addition, the composite hydrogel was used as an adsorbent for the removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Due to the presence of directional channels, the composite hydrogel achieved higher adsorption capacity and faster adsorption rate than the non-vertically aligned composite hydrogel. This work realized integration of solar desalination and PFOA removal in a single evaporator, offering a facile strategy for treating saline wastewater containing organic pollutants.

Copolymerization of MMA With HEMA Together With Their Transesterification to Yield Tough and Transparent PMMA

Jiehao Qu,Jicheng Li,Guang Yang,Nianzhao Gao,Xiangdong Liu

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) possesses high optical transparency but suffers from insufficient mechanical strength. Most toughening methods compromise optical clarity, processability, or industrial scalability. Herein, we present a scalable toughening strategy based on copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), combined with transesterification between their units. The resulting random MMA-co-HEMA copolymers retain excellent visible-light transmittance (above 90.0%, 5 mm) while achieving remarkable mechanical enhancements, including increases of 74% in tensile strength and 22% in impact strength compared with linear PMMA. Further studies reveal that the transesterification between HEMA and MMA units induces a lightly cross-linked network. This approach not only offers advantages in simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with industrial processes such as casting molding, but also effectively prevents uncontrollable autoacceleration during bulk polymerization. These findings provide new insights for the designing of high-performance optical thermoplastics with promising potential in structural optical applications.

SDS Induces the Cross-Linking of PEI Molecules by Electrostatic Attraction to Prepare PVDF Ultrafiltration Membrane

Weiyi Kong,Min Li,Dingguang Wu,Kaizhou Zhang,Jinbo Jin

In this study, PVDF/SMA membranes were fabricated via non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS), followed by grafting of polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the membrane surface through reaction with the anhydride groups of SMA, yielding PVDF/SMA-PEI membranes. Owing to the considerable free volume of PEI chains, stacking tends to occur during cross-linking with SMA, resulting in a loose selective layer and poor retention of small- to medium-sized dye molecules. To address this, the small-molecule additive sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was introduced into the PEI solution. The electrostatic interaction between the sulfate ions of SDS and PEI promotes a more uniform distribution of PEI on the membrane surface, reducing inter-chain aggregation and forming a denser selective layer. The resulting PEI-SDS membrane maintained a high pure-water flux of 220 L/m 2 ·h while achieving methyl blue, indigo carmine, and acid fuchsin rejection rates of 98.86%, 99.57%, and 86.77%, respectively. In conclusion, this work provides a simple method for preparing highly efficient positively charged membranes for dye removal.

Preparation of Flexible Self-Healing Materials With High Interfacial Compatibility via Silanized Waterborne Polyurethane Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystals

Bai Yi,Chao Yan,Lijuan Nie,Jinglan Su,Guoqi Xu

This study strategically incorporated a preferred chain extender (containing reversible disulfide bonds) into the waterborne polyurethane (WPU) backbone. The WPU matrix was subjected to silanization modification, and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were uniformly dispersed as multifunctional reinforcing fillers to form a “multi-reinforced system” (AHWPU-C X ). Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to elucidate the molecular-level interfacial interaction mechanism between silanized/unsilanized WPU and CNC. The binding energy between the silanized WPU and CNC increased by 67.5%, and the superior interfacial compatibility guaranteed the overall performance of the composite. The prepared AHWPU-C 2 exhibits a 20% increase in the temperature corresponding to the peak mass loss rate, a 127% enhancement in tensile strength, a 313% increase in elastic modulus, and an elastic recovery rate as high as 94%. Its self-healing efficiency reaches 84.6%, realizing an excellent balance between high mechanical performance and efficient self-healing ability. In addition, AHWPU-C 2 can be recycled via hot pressing at 120°C. After the first recycling, the tensile strength and elongation at break of AHWPU-C 2 were restored to 85.4% and 91%, respectively. This work provides a feasible multi-enhancement strategy for the development of high-performance WPU, while offering an effective solution to the interfacial compatibility issue between nanofillers and the polymer matrix.

Self-Healing and Reprocessable Cross-Linked Polyurethane Urea With High Strength and Modulus via Dynamic Disulfide Bonds

Chenglin Wang,Xiaojuan Ma,Xintao Ma,Zihao Liu,Miaoming Huang,Wanlin Xu,Hao Liu,Suqin He,Wentao Liu

To achieve high strength and modulus of thermosetting polyurethane materials at room temperature, and self-healing and reprocessing at elevated temperatures, this study proposes a dynamic covalent crosslinking strategy where disulfide bonds are predominantly located in the rigid hard segments of crosslinked polyurethane urea (C-PUUSS). The resulting polyurethane urea exhibits outstanding fracture toughness (157.2 MJ·m −3 ), tensile strength (60.9 MPa), elongation at break (479%), and a remarkable Young's modulus (235.4 MPa). Despite its crosslinked structure, C-PUUSS demonstrates good reprocessability and self-healing capability due to disulfide bonds. Compared with the pristine sample, the reprocessed C-PUUSS retains nearly unchanged tensile strength, while its elongation at break and toughness increase, with a slight decrease in Young's modulus. The self-healing efficiencies of tensile strength and elongation at break for C-PUUSS are 61.7% and 61.9%, reflecting the inherent trade-off of thermosetting networks: high crosslink density brings excellent mechanical properties but inevitably restricts chain mobility and slows the exchange of dynamic bonds. Moreover, the reprocessed C-PUUSS maintains favorable self-healing performance. In addition, C-PUUSS exhibits excellent solvent resistance. This study achieves a synergy of high crosslinking density, self-healing, and reprocessability through molecular design, offering a novel approach for the development of sustainable high-performance polyurethane materials.
