Production of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Fructose in Ionic Liquid Efficiently Catalyzed by Cr(III)-Al2O3 Catalyst

Changhua Song,Hui Liu,Yuan Li,Shuai Ge,Hongwei Wang,Wenshuai Zhu,Yonghui Chang,Changri Han,Huaming Li

A series of metal-Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared simply by the conventional impregnation with Al 2 O 3 and metal chlorides, which were applied to the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). An agreeable HMF yield of 93.1% was achieved from fructose at mild conditions (100°C and 40 min) when employing Cr(III)-Al 2 O 3 as catalyst in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl). The Cr(III)-Al 2 O 3 catalyst was characterized via XRD, DRS and Raman spectra and the results clarified the interaction between the Cr(III) and the alumina support. Meanwhile, the reaction solvents ([Bmim]Cl) collected after 1 st reaction run and 5 th reaction run were analyzed by ICP-OES and LC-ITMS and the results confirmed that no Cr(III) ion was dropped off from the alumina support during the fructose dehydration. Notably, Cr(III)-Al 2 O 3 catalyst had an excellent catalytic performance for glucose and sucrose and the HMF yields were reached to 73.7% and 84.1% at 120°C for 60 min, respectively. Furthermore, the system of Cr(III)-Al 2 O 3 and [Bmim]Cl exhibited a constant stability and activity at 100°C for 40 min and a favorable HMF yield was maintained after ten recycles.

Improved Bi film wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of trace Cr(VI)

Ruizhuo Ouyang,Wangyao Zhang,Shilin Zhou,Zi-Ling Xue,Lina Xu,Yingying Gu,Yuqing Miao

We report here the successful fabrication of an improved Bi film wrapped single walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (Bi/SWNTs/GCE) as a highly sensitive platform for ultratrace Cr(VI) detection through catalytic adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (AdCSV). The introduction of negatively charged SWNTs extraordinarily decreased the size of Bi particles to nanoscale due to electrostatic interaction which made Bi(III) cations easily attracted onto the surface of SWNTs in good order, leading to higher quality of Bi film deposition. The obtained Bi/SWNTs composite was well characterized with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the static water contact angle and the voltammetric measurements. The results demonstrate the improvements in the quality of Bi film deposited on the surface of SWNTs such as faster speed of electron transfer, more uniform and smoother morphology, better hydrophilicity and higher stripping signal. Using diethylene triaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as complexing ligand, the fabricated electrode displays a well-defined and highly sensitive peak for the reduction of Cr(III)–DTPA complex at −1.06   V (vs. Ag/AgCl) with a linear concentration range of 0–25   nM and a fairly low detection limit of 0.036   nM. No interference was found in the presence of coexisting ions, and good recoveries were achieved for the analysis of a river sample. In comparison to previous approaches using Bi film modified GCE, the newly designed electrode exhibits better reproducibility and repeatability toward aqueous detection of trace Cr(VI) and appears to be very promising as the basis of a highly sensitive and selective voltammetric procedure for Cr(VI) detection at trace level in real samples.

Influence of TiO2 hollow sphere size on its photo-reduction activity for toxic Cr(VI) removal

Jiabai Cai,Xueqing Wu,Fengying Zheng,Shunxing Li,Yaling Wu,Yanping Lin,Liting Lin,Biwen Liu,Qiaoying Chen,Luxiu Lin

After polystyrene@titanium dioxide (PS@TiO 2 ) composite with different size was calcined at designated temperature, TiO 2 hollow sphere with controllable size was obtained for high efficient photo-reduction of Cr(VI). The feature of the TiO 2 hollow sphere was investigated by SEM, TEM , XRD , UV–Vis, and photoluminescence . The photo-reduction of Cr(VI) were measured for the performance assessment of the TiO 2 hollow sphere, Cr(VI) was used as an electron acceptor . After irradiation for 2   h, the photo-reduction rate of Cr(VI) (pH   =   2.82) for TiO 2 (450   nm) was 96%, which exhibited an increase of 5% and 8% compared with TiO 2 (370   nm) and TiO 2 (600   nm). The absorption edges of TiO 2 hollow sphere (450   nm) was largest with the increasing of hollow sphere size from 370 to 600   nm. The optimal hollow sphere size of TiO 2 was 450   nm for the photo-reduction of Cr(VI), because the light-harvesting efficiency (the best of absorption edge) and photo-generated electron-hole separation rate (the best of photo-reduction rate) of TiO 2 hollow sphere were controlled by its hollow sphere size. In addition, we find that the behavior of the hydrogen production was inhibited by the coexistence Cr(VI) solution. This study can improve our understanding of the mechanism for the activity enhancement by the optimal hollow sphere size of TiO 2 .

Adsorption removal of o-nitrophenol and p-nitrophenol from wastewater by metal–organic framework Cr-BDC

Jianhua Chen,Xue Sun,Lijing Lin,Xinfei Dong,Yasan He

In the present paper, a metal–organic framework Cr-BDC was prepared and used as adsorbent for adsorption of o -nitrophenol (ONP) and p -nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solutions. Cr-BDC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and BET methods. The results indicate that Cr-BDC gets a very large specific surface area of 4128   m 2 ·g −   1 and pore sizes are concentrated in 1   nm, which is a benefit for using for wastewater treatment . The influences of the adsorption conditions, such as temperature, solution concentration, adsorption time and reusability on adsorption performance were investigated. Cr-BDC exhibited an encouraging uptake capacity of 310.0   mg·g −   1 for ONP, and adsorption capacity of Cr-BDC for ONP is significantly higher than that for PNP under suitable adsorption conditions. The characterizations of adsorption process were examined with the Lagergren pseudo-first-order, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the intra-particular diffusion model. Kinetics experiments indicated that the pseudo-second-order model displayed the best correlation with adsorption kinetics data. Furthermore, our adsorption equilibrium data could be better described by the Freundlich equation. The results indicate that the as-prepared Cr-BDC is promising for use as an effective and economical adsorbent for ONP removal.

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal via CPBr-modified MIL-88A@amine-functionalized GO: synthesis, performance, and mechanism

Hammad Eman N.,Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Abouelenein Saeyda A.,El-Subruiti Gehan

Water contamination by heavy metals, especially chromium (VI), poses a critical environmental issue due to its carcinogenic nature and persistence in the environment. Addressing this, the current study develops an efficient adsorbent, CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO, which utilizes the synergistic capabilities of Cetylpyridinium bromide–modified MIL-88A and amine-functionalized graphene oxide to enhance Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. The obtained results indicate that CPBr-MIL-88A@AmGO achieves its highest removal efficacy at pH 2, where the interaction of CPBr and AmGO’s positively charged centers significantly contributes to the adsorption processes. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the composite’s adsorption capacity reached a maximum of 306.75 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second-order model along with the endothermic nature of the process. Although the presence of SO 4 2- ions significantly reduces adsorption capacity, other interfering ions including Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Cl - , and NO 3 - only slightly affect it. Remarkably, the composite maintains high removal efficiency, over 82%, even after 7 recycling tests, underscoring its potential for practical applications in water treatment systems. The proposed mechanism involves the contribution of electrostatic attractions, ion exchange, complexation, and the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the removal process. This study not only offers a potent solution for Cr(VI) remediation but also contributes to sustainable water resource management.

Enhancing Cr(VI) removal performance of Ti3C2Tx through structural modification by using a spray freezing method

Linjie Yi,Hongwei Wang,Xianliang Ren,GaoBin Liu,Hongen Nian,Zhiqin Zheng,Fang Wu

Structural modification is expected to be a facile way to enhance the adsorption performance of MXene. In this work, the structural modification of Ti3C2Tx was carried out by a spray freezing method, and two kinds of nano-structure (spherical and flaky) of Ti3C2Tx were prepared by adjusting the solution concentration of Ti3C2Tx. Then the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of the spherical and flaky Ti3C2Tx was investigated, respectively. It is found that flaky Ti3C2Tx was produced with a Ti3C2Tx concentration of 3 mg mL−1, while spherical Ti3C2Tx was obtained with a concentration of 6 mg mL−1. The long diameter of flaky Ti3C2Tx is about 8–10 μm, and the specific surface area is 17.81 m2 g−1. While spherical Ti3C2Tx had a diameter of about 1–4 μm and a specific surface area of 17.07 m2 g−1. The optimized structure of flaky and spherical Ti3C2Tx improves the maximum adsorption capacity by 97% and 33%, respectively, compared with the few-layer Ti3C2Tx. The maximum adsorption capacity of flaky Ti3C2Tx was 928 mg g−1, while that of spherical Ti3C2Tx was 626 mg g−1. The adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures decreased with the increase of pH, and reached the maximum value at pH = 2; meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of both Ti3C2Tx structures increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on flaky Ti3C2Tx was very fast, reaching equilibrium in 3 min, while spherical Ti3C2Tx took 5 min. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on both Ti3C2Tx structures belonged to the monolayers, heat-absorbing chemical adsorption, and the diffusion process of Cr(VI) was regulated by the external diffusion and internal diffusion of particles. Its adsorption mechanism was the combination of reductive adsorption and electrostatic adsorption.

Efficient removal of Cr(VI) using recycled MgO from laterite nickel ore by fly ash doping

Liqing Zhang,Bo Li,Yonggang Wei,Haoyuan Xu

Environmental problems caused by Cr(VI) need to be solved urgently. As a green and safe adsorbent, magnesium oxide has the characteristics of strong adsorption capacity and safety, non-toxic and harmless. In this study, high-performance Cr(VI) adsorption material (F-MgO) was prepared by combination hydrothermal modification of recycling MgO and doping of solid waste fly ash with the MgO that was a by-product of high magnesium laterite nickel ore. The adsorption properties of F MgO composites for Cr(VI) were evaluated, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by F MgO reaches 172.6 mg/g at pH = 2.0. The F-MgO also showed high stability and excellent cycle adsorption performance. The adsorption mechanism was extensively studied by adsorption kinetics and DFT theoretical calculation, and electrostatic adsorption and chemical interaction between Cr(VI) and F MgO active sites were demonstrated. The prepared F MgO composites from waste resources with a simple synthetic method have great potential in the treatment of chrome-containing wastewater to achieve the purpose of treating waste with waste.

Engineering Cr−O−Ti structure towards boosted vinyl chloride destruction: Oxygen species evolution and reaction mechanism

Han Xu,Qin Yang,Mingjiao Tian,Yaruo Zhao,Dong Guo,Zeyu Jiang,Yanfei Jian,Yadi Wang,Fan Dang,Chunli Ai,Jialei Wan,Reem Albilali,Chi He

Revealing the mechanism behind active oxygen species in chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOC) destruction is crucial but challenging. Herein, we designed a chromium-substituted titanium bimetal catalyst with strengthened element interaction, exhibiting remarkable ability to activate oxygen and destroy intermediates. Encapsulated chromium species triple the electron transfer speed (Cr → TiO 2 ), converting 90 % of vinyl chloride at 244 °C. The constructed Cr 6 + −O−Ti 3+ structure distorts TiO 2 lattice, generating defects that promote oxygen species activation. In-situ technologies and DFT calculations demonstrate that vinyl chloride adsorbed at Cr 6+ =O sites is oxidized by lattice oxygen, forming C O species, while surface oxygen activates in a cyclic process, promoting the *CH 2 CH to *CH 2 CHO and CH 2 CO. The constructed Cr-O-Ti structure breaks the rate-limiting step of *CH 2 CHO to CH 2 CO process, accelerating the formation of *CH 3 CO and further promoting the deep oxidation process (*CHO + *CO). This work presents new findings towards CVOC highly efficient purification, showcasing significant application potential.

Fc-COOH modified MIL-101(Cr) as enhanced photocatalyst to efficiently degrade tetracycline under visible light

Jiale Lu,Amin Jv,Hongyu Zhao,Guangbo Che,Bo Feng,Yufei Zhang,Chunbo Liu,Renquan Guan

MIL-101(Cr) is an ideal material for wastewater treatment due to its large specific surface area, excellent water stability, and chemical stability. However, its limited light absorption capacity hinders its application. We loaded ferrocene carboxylic acid (Fc-COOH) onto MIL-101(Cr) by a post-synthetic modification method, which resulted in the MOF possessing excellent optical properties while maintaining its original skeleton structure. The MIL-101(Cr)/Fc-COOH (1:2), (abbreviated as CFCC-2) exhibited the best performance, achieving a removal rate of 96% for tetracycline (TC) in just 30 min. This removal rate is significantly higher compared to MIL-101(Cr) and Fc-COOH, which achieved removal rates of only 15% and 21%, respectively. We propose a possible Z-type heterojunction mechanism between MIL-101(Cr) and Fc-COOH to explain the excellent photocatalytic performance of CFCC-2. The intermediates in TC were identified using LC-MS, and the toxicity of these intermediates was predicted and evaluated through the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.). This study provides new insights into the design and fabrication of MIL-101(Cr)-based catalysts as photodegrading organic pollutants.

Investigation of Ternary CuZnM (M = Cr, Ce, Zr, Al) Catalysts in CO2 Hydrogenation for Methanol Synthesis

Jingjing Wang,Peixiang Shi,Jiahao Han,Yuhao Tian,Zhiqiang Yan,Pengcheng Luo,Hongyan Ban,Yanchun Li,Weijie Cai,Guanjing Lin,Zhiqiang Zhai,Congming Li

The hydrogenation of CO2to methanol over Cu-based catalysts is one of the attractive routes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate high-value-added chemicals. Industrial CuZnAl catalysts possess some shortcomings, but various promoters can enhance the activity and durability of Cu-based catalysts for CO2hydrogenation. Herein, we systematically investigated the variations in the physicochemical properties of ternary CuZnM (M: Cr, Ce, Zr, Al) catalysts induced by different promoters, as well as their impact on CO2hydrogenation to methanol. The results demonstrate that the catalytic activity followed the order of CZCr > CZCe > CZZr > CZAl, with CZCr exhibiting the highest stability among them. Combined with XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, TPD, XPS, Raman findings and the experimental results, the smaller Cu particle size was conducive to increasing the CH3OH yield, and the lower Cu+/Cu0ratio exhibited better stability in CO2hydrogenation to methanol reaction. This approach offers theoretical insights and practical solutions for the industrial application of ternary Cu-based catalysts.

Curie temperature and magnetic permeability regulation of Cr–Mg co-doped NiCuZn ferrite for tumor hyperthermia

Huan Li,Jie Wang,Shoutao Lv,Chuming Chen,Haocheng Luo,Qiong Wu,Qiangyuan Zhang,Hui Zheng,Liang Zheng

The controllable Curie temperature and high magnetic permeability of NiCuZn ferrites make them promising candidates for magnetic thermal medium. However, the temperature control of existing NiCuZn ferrite materials is not accurate enough to achieve the low Curie temperature required for tumor hyperthermia. In order to further achieve the desired Curie temperature and facilitate the advancement of temperature control materials for tumor hyperthermia, Cr–Mg co-doped NiCuZn ferrite was studied. The study investigated the influence of varying concentrations of Cr 3+ on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Mg–NiCuZn ferrites. The results of structural characterization demonstrate that Cr–Mg co-doped NiCuZn ferrites exhibit high density and uniform distribution of elements. The introduction of Cr 3+ leads to a reduction in lattice parameters and a preference for octahedral B-sites. The hysteresis loop results show that the saturation magnetization first increases and then decreases with the increase of Cr 3+ concentration. Ni 0.09 Mg 0.20 Cu 0.14 Zn 0.60 Fe 1.89 Cr 0.050 O 3.94 ferrite at 0.30 wt% of Bi 2 O 3 exhibits optimal magnetic characteristics, including a saturation magnetization of ∼36.7 emu/g, low coercivity of ∼0.07 kA/m, high permeability of ∼982.43 @1 MHz, and an appropriate Curie temperature of 45.59 °C. Such permeability and Curie temperature can be used in the body cavity perfusion hyperthermia and deep thermal therapy.

Construction of NH2-MIL-101(Cr)/TiO2 heterojunction for enhancing visible light response in photocathodic protection

Lifeng Chi,Xiutong Wang,Siyao Guo,Meipeng Ren,Hua Guo,Mingchun Wang,Youbo Nan,Jinguo Wang

Photocathodic protection has obtained enormous attention in the field of metal corrosion control as an efficient and eco-friendly technology. Developing the photoelectrode with good photoelectrochemical properties is a prerequisite for achieving satisfactory photocathodic protection performance. Here, the NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures are prepared. Meanwhile, the organic linkers and metal ions from NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) are used to synthesize the N- and Cr-doped TiO 2 anodes, respectively. The UV–vis DRS, photoluminescence spectra and photoelectrochemical tests conducted under visible light demonstrate the enhanced light absorption, suppressed photoinduced charge carrier recombination, and accelerated separation and transfer rates of photoinduced electron-hole pairs in the TiO 2 composites. The 304 stainless steel connected with NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures shows the most negative potential (about −0.72 V vs. SCE) and satisfied stability in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The result can be explained by the significantly enhanced optical and photoelectrochemical properties and the strong electric field intensity in the composite heterojunctions. Besides, it has been observed that the NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)/TiO 2 heterostructures exhibit the best photocathodic protection performance than Cr and N-doped TiO 2 anodes. This research broadens the application scope of MOFs in corrosion resistance and helps to assess the effect of heterostructure construction and element doping on TiO 2 .
