Ionic liquid-based magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry for the determination of Cu, Cd, and Zn in biological samples

Chao Cui,Bin Hu,Beibei Chen,Man He

Ionic liquids of methyltrioctylammonium chloride modified magnetic nanoparticles were prepared, and a new method of magnetic solid phase extraction combined with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry was established for the determination of Cu, Zn, and Cd in human hair and urine samples. The effect of pH on the extraction of Cu, Zn, and Cd was investigated. The results show that the ionic liquid played a key role in the extraction of target analytes. The magnetic nanoparticles served as the carriers of the ionic liquid and the base of the phase separation. Several parameters affecting the extraction and desorption of the target analytes were investigated including the sample volume, extraction time, eluent concentration and volume, desorption time, sedimentation time, amount of the ionic liquid and Fe3O4@Si–OH, and the optimized conditions were established. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits of Cu, Zn, and Cd were 0.54, 0.56, and 0.33 μg L−1, respectively, and the relative standard deviations (n = 7) were 4.9% (c = 2 μg L−1), 3.7% (c = 2 μg L−1), and 5.1% (c = 1 μg L−1), respectively. To validate the accuracy of the proposed method, it was applied to analyze certified reference materials of GBW07601 human hair and GBW09103 human urine. The determined values agree with the certified values. The developed method was also employed to analyze human hair and urine, and the recoveries for the spiked samples were in the range of 89.1% to 120%. The developed method was simple, highly sensitive, solvent-free, chelate-free, and could be considered as a green analytical technique.

Integrating spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations to elucidate the adsorption efficiency and mechanisms of Cd, Pb, and Cu using novel carboxymethyl cellulose/pectin-based hydrogel beads

Liting Zhang,Mingjun Qiao,Haoyu Zheng,Tony Vancov,Vasileios Antoniadis,Sabry M. Shaheen,Stephen Joseph,Chao Chen,Shengdao Shan,Hanbo Chen,Hailong Wang

Herein, a series of novel carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/pectin-based hydrogel beads were synthesized with chitosan as a cross-linker. The hydrogel composites were denoted as CPC-1/2/3/4/5, with varying mass ratios of CMC, pectin, and chitosan (6:0:1, 5:1:1, 4:2:1, 3:3:1, and 2:4:1). This is a pioneering study that investigates the synergistic effects of these biopolymers in a single hydrogel system for the adsorption of heavy metals, specifically Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ . CPC-4 was identified as the optimal adsorbent, and its adsorption behavior, efficiency, and mechanisms were systematically explored. The adsorption kinetics of CPC-4 for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ adhered to the pseudo-second-order model, while equilibrium adsorption isotherms were best described by the Langmuir model. Notably, CPC-4 achieved maximum adsorption capacities for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ of 139.4, 270.3, and 143.6 mg/g, respectively. Spectroscopic analyses including FTIR and XPS revealed abundant oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing functional groups (carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amine) in CPC-4, which facilitated metal ion binding through complexation reactions. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the incorporation of chitosan significantly enhanced the interaction between CMC and pectin, identifying the coupled regions as the most favorable sites for metal adsorption, with adsorption energies of −4.03 eV for Cd, −4.59 eV for Pb, and −5.59 eV for Cu. The superior adsorption performance of CPC-4 is primarily attributed to complexation and hydrogen bonding at the cross-linked sites. In summary, this study highlights the potential of this biopolymer-based hydrogel composite as a promising new adsorbent for the effective management of heavy metal contamination in aquatic environments.

Preparation of a novel self-floating and magnetic adsorbent and its enhanced separation of stable forms of Cd from oil and gas field drilling solid waste

Bing Wang,Wei Ma,Yuan Chen,Yujia Gao,Guojun Hu,Guochuan Luo

Drilling solid waste (DSW) is a typical byproduct of drilling operations in oil and gas fields. The characteristics of DSW are influenced by both the background soil properties and any added additives. Heavy metal (HM) contamination, particularly cadmium (Cd 2 + ), poses a significant environmental challenge due to its toxicity to nearly all living organisms, including plants. DSW samples from the Tarim Oilfield, Xinjiang, China, were analyzed for HM content and its form distribution. The total Cd content was 48 mg/kg, with 41.1 % as unstable HM and 58.9 % as stable HM, exceeding the standard (DB 65/T 3997–2017). Conventional methods for remediating HM-contaminated soil, such as chemical washing and adsorption, are commonly used. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the DSW has a crystalline carbonate structure, which is disrupted when treated with strong acids. Thus, in this study, a modified self-floating magnetic hollow glass microsphere (FHGM) was employed to remediate HM-contaminated DSW without the use of acidic washing agents. FHGM has a hollow structure, floats within 30 s, and possesses a saturation magnetization near 9, allowing for effective self-flotation and magnetic response, which facilitate its separation from the DSW. The results show that when the solution pH was 8, contact time was 240 min, the dosage of Fe 3 O 4 was 0.6 g and the proportion of heavy metals to FHGM= 100:1, the removal efficiency of Cd from DSW using FHGM reached 78.8 %. Notably, the removal rate of HMs from the FeMn and OM fractions was high, indicating that FHGM enhances the migration of stable HMs. Furthermore, using centrifugal force at 17,232 x g, Cd and FHGM were effectively separated, with the material being recycled up to five times, FHGM still retain approximately 73.2 % of their initial adsorption capacities. Therefore, enhanced separation of stable-state Cd from DSW using FHGM presents an effective new treatment technology. The preparation of FHGM also means that it provides a new green and economic treatment method for the remediation of heavy metal pollution in the solid phase (not limited to DSW).

One-pot amination and carboxylation functionalization of lignin for efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) and Cd(II): Influence of functional groups on adsorption equilibrium and mechanism

Zuoyu Jia,Fengkai Liang,Xinze Xu,Haifeng Zhou,Yaqing Zhang,Peng Liang

The removal of multiple heavy metal pollutants remains a challenge. Amination and carboxylation modified lignins (NCLs) prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method were used as adsorbents for Cr(VI) and Cd(II) removal. The oxygenous groups content in adsorbents was quantitatively analyzed by Boehm titration in which NCL10 (the mass ratio of citric acid: triethylene diamine = 10) possessed a maximum carboxyl group content of 1.22 mmol/g. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was the most suitable, with the highest theoretical adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) of 1298.6 and 103.1 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, FT-IR and XPS exhibited that NCL5 surface contained many functional groups beneficial to the removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II). The contribution of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups to the removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) was quantitatively analyzed. After the blocking of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, the adsorption rate of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) decreased by 26.4 %, 67.7 % and 7.2 %, 43.3 %, respectively. This study provides effective strategies to overcome the limitations of lignin adsorbents for wastewaters containing a wide range of heavy metal pollutants.

Accurate detection of Cd (II) based on His-Pd@Apt/PANI@Au-modified needle electrochemical ratiometric/colorimetric dual-mode sensor combined with a WeChat mini program

Lei Tian,Qi Guo,Luting Yan,Yuhao Zhang,Zekun Ren,Chao Wang,Xia Sun,Yemin Guo,Yanyan Zhang

Heavy metal cadmium (Cd (II)) contamination in aquatic products poses severe health risks, necessitating rapid, accurate, and portable detection methods. Traditional electrochemical sensors often suffer from background interference and low accuracy, especially when utilizing stainless steel acupuncture needles as electrodes. Single-signal systems are prone to environmental fluctuations, limiting reliability. Thus, there is an urgent need for a sensitive, low-cost, and visual sensor that integrates dual detection modes for on-site analysis of Cd (II). We report a novel ratiometric/colorimetric dual-mode aptamer sensor based on a polyaniline-gold nanocomposite (PANI@Au)-modified acupuncture needle. This platform uses PANI's peak at −0.9 V as an internal reference and His-Pd@aptamer's peak at −0.2 V as a detection signal, enabling ratiometric electrochemical quantification. In parallel, His-Pd nanoparticles catalyze the oxidation of TMB to produce a blue color, allowing visual detection with a limit of 3.10 × 10 −2  ng/L. RGB values are analyzed by a smartphone and WeChat mini-program for rapid result output. The electrochemical and colorimetric modes demonstrated excellent sensitivity (LOD: 3.40 × 10 −2  ng/L electrochemical; 1.06 × 10 −1  ng/L RGB-based) and linear range of 10 1 –10 8  ng/L. The sensor showed strong selectivity, stability, and successful application in detecting Cd (II) in fish, shrimp, and scallop samples with high recovery rates. This is the first report of a needle-based ratiometric/colorimetric aptamer sensor that enables both electrochemical quantification and smartphone-based visual detection of Cd (II). The device supports rapid, on-site, and low-skill operation with sub-100 μL samples, demonstrating its potential for real-time monitoring of heavy metal contamination in aquatic food safety.

Dual-signal cross-validation via ECL quenching and DPV oxidation on a MIP sensor: ultrasensitive detection of sulfadiazine in complex food matrices with a CD-COF core

Xuran Zhang,Rongxian Ma,Zhili Li,Jing Cao,Haoqi Ma,Yeyu Wu,Xuecai Tan,Kejing Huang

The excessive use of sulfadiazine (SDZ) poses significant health risks due to toxic residues in food and ecosystems. This work introduces a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sensor featuring a carbon dot-based covalent organic framework (CD-COF) core as a high-performance electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitter. Upon SDZ rebinding to imprinted sites, the sensor leverages SDZ's inherent redox activity to enable complementary differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) detection alongside ECL quenching. This dual-signal output establishes an intrinsic cross-validation mechanism that inherently corrects environmental interferences. The sensor achieves ultrasensitive detection of SDZ, with impressively low detection limits of 0.28 nM (ECL) and 1.6 nM (DPV). Validation in food matrices demonstrates exceptional accuracy and reliability, yielding recoveries of 91–110%. This study not only provides a robust tool for trace SDZ monitoring but also establishes a new paradigm for CD-COF-powered MIP sensors integrating dual-mode signals for highly reliable contaminant analysis in real-world samples.

MoS₄2−-Intercalated MgFe-LDH/Biochar Hybrid for Efficient and Simultaneous Removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in Aqueous Solution: Insights into Adsorption Performance and Mechanisms

Li Lanlan,Wang Zili,Wang Guanghui,Zhang Xuewen,Deng Nansheng

Widespread contamination by Pb(II) and Cd(II) poses persistent environmental and public health risks, while achieving selective removal with a clear mechanistic understanding in multicomponent systems remains challenging. Herein, a MgFe-MoS₄-LDH/BC hybrid composite was synthesized via co-precipitation followed by MoS₄ 2 ⁻ intercalation to regulate interlayer chemistry and introduce sulfur-based active sites. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, and equilibrium data were well described by the Langmuir model, indicating dominant chemisorption. Under optimized conditions (C₀- Pb  = 100 mg/L, C₀- Cd  = 20 mg/L, pH = 6.0, dosage = 0.2 g/L), the composite achieved removal efficiencies of 99.53% for Pb(II) and 85.71% for Cd(II). In binary systems, Pb(II) showed stronger competitive behavior, exhibiting only a 4.7% capacity reduction compared to 9.4% for Cd(II). Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Combined XRD, FTIR, XPS, and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed that metal immobilization was governed by complexation with oxygen- and sulfur-containing groups, surface precipitation (Pb₂(SO₄)O and Cd(OH)₂), and electrostatic attraction. DFT calculations further demonstrated stronger Pb–S interactions, explaining preferential Pb(II) adsorption. The composite maintained high stability after five regeneration cycles, and key scientific challenges and future innovation pathways are summarized to guide practical application. This work provides a rational strategy for designing selective LDH-based composites for heavy-metal remediation.

Facile and green fabrication of electrochemical sensor based on poly(glutamic acid) and carboxylated carbon nanosheets for the sensitive simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Wei Shou-lian,Yan Liang-jie,Huang Xiang-jin,Li Jian-wen,Yao Su,Zhang Hua-sheng,Xu Ai-zhen

This work describes the development of a simple, effective, and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with carboxylated carbon nanosheets (cCNSs) and poly(glutamic acid) (PGA) for the simultaneous detection of trace amount of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The cCNSs were introduced to increase the effective surface area and electron transport efficiency of the sensor, while PGA acting as a capturer could capture target metal ions and eventually enhance the selectivity and sensitivity in the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The designed sensor showed a linear range of 1.0–100.0 μg/L for both metal ions, with detection limits (S/ N  = 3) of 0.13 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.15 μg/L for Pb(II), respectively. The sensor was applied to the simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in the water and rice samples, and the results were in good agreement with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). It also gave excellent performance with regard to its selectivity, recovery, stability, and reproducibility.

Rapid and efficient removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution in a wide range pH by sodalite type sorbents using cellulose superfine fiber as a template agent

Shanshan He,Shengle Kang,Lan Zhang,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Fangfang Li,Qihong Cen

Sodalite is a common zeolite , which is often discarded or ignored due to its small pore size and poor adsorption capacity. In this study, two sodalite type materials , CSF-S and N-CSF-S, were synthesized using cellulose superfine fiber (CSF) as template. Its unique scaly structure not only enhances its adsorption capacity for Cd (II), but also improves its adsorption efficiency. At 298 K and the initial Cd (II) concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption equilibrium of CSF-S was achieved within 30 min, which is 98% shorter than that of traditional sodalite. The adsorption of Cd (II) by CSF-S and N-CSF-S is an endothermic process and at 298 K the adsorption capacity could be as high as 260.1 and 284.1 mg/L, respectively, which were 1.9 and 2.0 times of the original sodalite, far higher than the reported similar adsorbents, and competitive to over other types of adsorbents. In addition, with low zero points of charge CSF-S (pH zpc around 1) and N-CSF-S (pH zpc around 3) can effectively remove Cd(II) over a wide pH range, superior to most zeolitic sorbent materials. Therefore, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective synthesis method for the sodalite type sorbents with high Cd(II) adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, and also provides some basis for the study of heavy metal adsorption materials in aqueous systems.

Highly efficient removal of As(III), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in aqueous solution using thermal desorption residue from oil sludge contaminated soil: Performance and mechanism

Ge Zhang,Huifen Yang,Tong Zhao,Xuan Li,Yichen Zhou,Song Guo

The thermal adsorption residue (TDR) from oil sludge co-contaminated soil was employed to remove As(III), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) in aqueous solution. The results showed that the TDR could efficiently neutralize the acid and adapt to the extensive pH. The adsorption of four heavy metals on TDR could be divided into three stages. The maximum adsorption capacity were 86.59, 249.07, 339.88, 322.86 mg·g −1 for As(III), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), respectively. The coexistence of Zn(II)/Cu(II)/Cd(II) could promote As(III) removal but As(III) led to decreasing of Zn(II)/Cu(II)/Cd(II) adsorption capacity in binary system. There was a significant competitive adsorption on TDR among the three cations which followed the selectivity sequence of Cu(II)>Zn(II)>Cd(II). The SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses demonstrated that the As(III) was removed via formation of Ca-As precipitation, and the Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) were removed through precipitating as hydroxides/carbonates/silicates combining with ion exchange. Specially, the Cu(II) mainly precipitated in the form of Cu 4 (SO 4 )(OH) 6 ⋅2H 2 O and Cu 4 (OH) 6 SO 4 under sulfuric acid solution environment. Overall, this study indicates the potential of TDR as a cost-effective adsorbent in acid heavy metals contaminated wastewater treatment .

Seed-mediated growth of heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS (M = Zn, Cd, Mn) and alloyed CuNS2 (N = In, Ga) nanocrystals for use in structure- and composition-dependent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Dongxu Zhu,Haihang Ye,Zheming Liu,Jun Liu,Hao Fu,Yanbin Huang,Feng Teng,Zhijie Wang,Aiwei Tang

Multinary copper-based chalcogenide nanocrystals (NCs) as light-driven photocatalysts have attracted extensive research interest due to their great potential for generating sustainable energy without causing environmental concerns. However, systematic studies on the growth mechanism and related photocatalytic activities involving different valent metal ions (either M2+ or N3+) as foreign cations and monoclinic Cu1.94S NCs as the ‘parent lattice’ have rarely been carried out. In this work, we report an effective seed-mediated method for the synthesis of heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs (M = Zn, Cd and Mn) and alloyed CuNS2 NCs (N = In and Ga). A typical cation exchange process took place prior to the growth of heterostructured NCs, while further inter-cation diffusion occurred only for the alloyed NCs. When compared with Cu1.94S NCs, all the heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs and CuGaS2 NCs showed enhanced photocatalytic activities toward hydrogen production by water splitting, owing to their tailored optical band gaps and energy level alignments. Although optically favored, CuInS2 ANCs were not comparable to others due to their low conduction band minimum for the reduction of H2O to H2.

A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method for synthesizing size-tunable CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and excellent stability

Beibei Wang,Huan Shang,Cuiping Nie,Qi Wang,Meihu Ma,Zhaoxia Cai

A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method has been developed for synthesizing size-tunable and water-soluble CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and good stability. The size of the prepared CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots can be easily manipulated by varying the concentrations of NaOH solution step by step. The maximal emission wavelengths of the series CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell QDs were from 513   nm to 610   nm (emission colors tuned from green to red). The CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots not only possess high quantum yield (up to 83%) but also exhibit excellent photostability (being stable after being stored for more than 2 months). The CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots were characterized by transmission electron microscopy , high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectrometry , ultraviolet–visible spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry. The water-soluble nature of the CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots offers great potentiality for their chemical and biological applications. This method is easily controlled, low-cost and reproducible. So it is possible to extend this approach to the preparation of other size-tunable inorganic metal hydroxide capped core/shell quantum dots.
