Metal-oxide-based gas sensors are extensively utilized across various domains due to their cost-effectiveness, facile fabrication, and compatibility with microelectronic technologies. The copper (Cu)-based multifunctional polymer-enhanced sensor (CuMPES) represents a notably tailored design for non-invasive environmental monitoring, particularly for detecting diverse gases with a low concentration. In this investigation, the Cu-CuO/PEDOT nanocomposite was synthesized via a straightforward chemical oxidation and vapor-phase polymerization. Comprehensive characterizations employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro Raman elucidated the composition, morphology, and crystal structure of this nanocomposite. Gas-sensing assessments of this CuMPES based on Cu-CuO/PEDOT revealed that the response current of the microneedle-type CuMPES surpassed that of the pure Cu microsensor by nearly threefold. The electrical conductivity and surface reactivity are enhanced by poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) polymerized on the CuO-coated surface, resulting in an enhanced sensor performance with an ultra-fast response/recovery of 0.3/0.5 s.

The design of a low-cost, efficient and durable co-catalyst for hydrogen evolution is of great significance for improving photocatalytic activity. In this work, a NiMoP 2 /Cu-ZnS composite photocatalyst was prepared by in-situ growth of NiMoP 2 on the surface of copper-doped zinc sulfide (Cu-ZnS). The test results showed that the hydrogen production rate of the optimized NiMoP 2 /Cu-ZnS under visible light irradiation was significantly improved. Among them, NiMoP 2 /Cu-ZnS-1 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity (5.13 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), which was 2.47 times that of Cu-ZnS and maintained good stability during the reaction. The improvement of hydrogen production performance of the photocatalyst was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu-ZnS and co-catalyst NiMoP 2 . The ohmic contact formed between Cu-ZnS and NiMoP 2 could improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and reduce the overpotential of H 2 evolution. Besides, NiMoP 2 was found to provide the active site for the reduction reaction, and accelerate the transfer efficiency of photogenerated electrons. This strategy opens up a new way for the construction of co-catalyst modified semiconductor materials to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate.

Herein, a novel hydrothermal synthesis strategy is proposed for the preparation of novel Cu-Ce MOF heterojunction nano catalysts (CuCeO X /C) for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) electrooxidation reaction in this paper. CuCeO X /C exhibits superior catalytic performance, with the current density of CuCeO X /C reaching 100 mA cm −2 at a low potential of 1.408 V vs. RHE, and doubling to 280 mA cm −2 at a lower potential of 1.5 V vs. RHE. Under these conditions, the conversion of HMF reaches 100 %, with a selectivity of over 99.11 % for 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and a Faradaic efficiency of 97.76 %. Theoretical calculations and In-situ-EIS have demonstrated that Ce-based Cu-MOF heterojunction nanocatalysts enhance the adsorption energy of the CuCeO X /C catalysts on HMF substrates while also decreasing reaction energy barrier of HMFOR. Based on our work, the employment of CeCu/MOF heterojunction electrocatalysts for efficient electro-oxidation of HMF to FDCA paves a green and sustainable way for advancing sustainable chemical processes and biomass valorization.

The hydrogenation of nitriles is an environmentally friendly and atom-economical route to prepare high-value amines; however, it is still a challenge to control selectivity because of the occurrence of hydrogenation, self-coupling, and hydrogenolysis reactions during the hydrogenation process. It is highly desirable to develop efficient non-noble-metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitriles to secondary amines, although several noble metal catalysts have been reported. Herein, we successfully prepared a Cu–Ni/W20O58 catalyst and found that the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst showed a 92.3% yield with initial TOFs of 270.0 h–1 at 373 K and 3 MPa H2 for the hydrogenation of benzonitrile (BN) to dibenzylamine (DBA), which was much superior to that of the monometallic Cu4.4/W20O58 and Ni0.6/W20O58 catalysts. Moreover, the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst could be reused at least 4 times and was effective for the hydrogenation of various nitriles with superior selectivity to secondary amines. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of BN hydrogenation for the Cu–Ni alloy of Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 was proposed on the basis of spectroscopic studies such as XRD, TPR, TEM, XAFS, and XPS, kinetic studies such as the effect of BN concentration and H2 pressure, the isotopic effect of hydrogen, and the effect of the reaction temperature and DFT calculations. The rate-determining step was the hydrogenation of benzylidenamine (BI) to the half-hydrogenated intermediate by one H atom over the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst. The Ni–W20O58 interface was responsible for the adsorption and activation of BN, and the electron-rich Cu acted as the site for H2 dissociation; the synergistic effect of Cu and Ni led to the superior catalytic performance of the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst.

Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZIHSCs) are emerging as a promising energy storage device, combining the benefits of traditional batteries and capacitors, including high energy density, incredible power density, a wide voltage window, and excellent capacity retention. In this study, a Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ co-doped needle-like tunnel-structured α-MnO₂ material is proposed as the cathode (Cu-Zn-MnO₂@CC), which is grown on an acid-treated flexible carbon cloth substrate using a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. Along with an anode made of super-mesoporous activated carbon derived from waste rice husks (ACrh@CC). The synergistic effect of the co-doping stabilizes the nanowire tunnel structure and provides more active sites. As a result, the Cu-Zn-MnO₂@CC//2 M ZnSO₄//ACrh@CC ZIHSC achieves an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 1241.85 mF cm⁻² at 1 mA cm⁻², representing an improvement of more than 50 % in performance compared to with conventional MnO₂@CC ZIHSC. And a maximum areal energy density of 689.9 μWh cm⁻² at a power density of 1 mW cm⁻². After 20,000 cycles, it retains 86.35 % of its initial capacitance. Furthermore, the assembled flexible device achieves a specific capacitance of 1070.21 mF cm⁻² at 1 mA cm⁻². This device can provide long-term power for electronic devices such as digital watches and timers. The study offers crucial understanding regarding structure of ZIHSC electrode materials and opens up possibilities for their potential applications.

The reliable detection of environmental contaminants can correctly forecast the degree of environmental pollution that has occurred, which contributes to improving the environmental purification rate and maintaining the ecological balance. Herein, a novel hierarchical biomimetic catalysis MnO2@CuAl-CLDHs was designed and synthesized using a facile method, which exhibited significantly enhanced peroxidase-like activity due to the unique composition and hierarchical mesoporous structure. Under optimized operational conditions, a visible colorimetric array based on the superior nanozyme activity of MnO2@CuAl-CLDHs was developed for the quantitative determination of hydroquinone with a wide linear detection range (1–100 μM) and a low detection limit (0.183 μM). Simultaneously, our presented strategy could analyze hydroquinone in real water samples with high accuracy. Therefore, the bimetallic co-catalyzed nanozymes are expected to be the perfect replacement for natural enzymes to develop convenient and efficient sensors.

Increasing dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation activity remains a challenge. A Cu catalyst was designed by creating Cu nanoparticles (NPs) over SiO 2 layer formed on the CeO 2 particles (SiO 2 @CeO 2 ) using the ammonia evaporation method followed by the calcination and reduction step. The optimized 30Cu/SiO 2 @5CeO 2 catalyst shows good performance in the micro-packed bed reactor (100 % DMO conversion, 95.9 % ethylene glycol (EG) selectivity, 200 h stability) under the condition of the ratio of H 2 to DMO (H 2 /DMO) = 30, 190 °C and 2 MPa in the run, and CeO 2 was proved to be effective in the DMO hydrogenation process. The exposed CeO 2 on the surface of catalyst was found to facilitate the formation of Cu + by its interaction between adjacent Cu nanoparticles, resulting in the faster adsorption and dissociation of C=O bond on the catalyst surface, according to the characterization results obtained by the XRD, XPS and in situ FT-IR, etc.

The all-in-one design of cathode and anode is a promising strategy to improve energy density and assembly efficiency for lithium batteries. However, it is an important prerequisite to combine negative and positive current collectors in a single sheet. Here, an asymmetric structure of bipolar composite current collector (BCCC), thin copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) metal layers respectively deposited on each side of a thin polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer substrate is developed. Unlike conventional metal foils, the electronically insulative polymer blocks electron transfer between the cathode and anode coated on each side of BCCC. Buckling-based mechanics measurement and molecular simulation are conducted to quantitatively evaluate the interfacial strength of metal/polymer, which is enhanced by introducing an intermediate chromium (Cr) layer. For applications in anode-free wound batteries, the integrated sheet of separator/cathode/BCCC can simplify the alignment of the electrodes during the winding process. Without special surface and electrolyte optimizations, a higher Coulombic efficiency (99.1%) and larger capacity retention (50.0%) are achieved after 100 cycles in the LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 anode-free battery than the battery using Cu foils.

The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Ultra-sensitive hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) detection technology at low temperatures provides critical support for the application of one-time alert systems under extreme conditions, ensuring reliable monitoring of H 2 S in low-temperature environments and enhancing safety and practicability. In this study, we developed a novel low-temperature H 2 S sensor based on Cu/Cu 2 O nanoarrays, prepared through a combination of 2D electrodeposition in situ assembly and the hydrothermal method. The heterointerface between Cu nanowires and Cu 2 O nanocubes presents a high barrier, which can be modulated to zero through the formation of continuous Cu x S conductive channels via the vulcanization reaction, thereby achieving excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards H 2 S at low temperatures. At freezing temperatures and low H 2 S concentrations (≤20 ppm), the sensors show ideal recovery and reasonable sensitivity (R=150 to 10 ppm H 2 S at 0 °C). However, the response significantly increases (R=5624 at 10 ppm H 2 S at 50 °C) and recovery is lost under reversed conditions. First-principles calculations have confirmed that the enhanced H 2 S adsorption at the heterointerface is the primary reason for the robust response observed at 0 °C. Experimental results demonstrate that the Cu/Cu 2 O nanoarrays were capable of rapid detection of H 2 S at low temperatures through modulation of heterointerface barriers.

Cu(OH) 2 has the advantages of ease of structural regulation, good conductivity, and relatively low cost, making it a suitable candidate material for use as an electrocatalyst. However, its catalytic efficiency and stability still need to be improved further. Therefore, Cu(OH) 2 /Cu 2 S was successfully prepared on copper foam (CF) using the in situ growth and hydrothermal method. The structural characterization showed that sulfidation treatment induced transformation of Cu(OH) 2 /CF from smooth nanorods into a coral-like structure, which exposed more active sites of Cu(OH) 2 /Cu 2 S and enhanced the performance of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with Cu(OH) 2 , Cu(OH) 2 /Cu 2 S showed better alkaline HER performance, especially when the vulcanization concentration was 0.1 M, the overpotential of Cu(OH) 2 /Cu 2 S was 174 mV, and the reaction kinetics was 64 mv dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . In this work, the morphology and electronic structure of copper-based metal sulfide electrocatalysts were adjusted by sulfide treatment, which provided a new reference for improving HER performance.

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is considered as a promising approach to provide hydrogen for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. However, it is challenging to develop effective and durable Cu-based catalysts. Herein, Cu-ZnO catalysts are prepared by facile quenching of ZnO in copper nitrate solution followed by reduction to obtain the desired metal loading and induce the doping of surface metal heteroatoms for producing more vacancies. Catalysts enriched with oxygen vacancies can efficiently activate H 2 O and rapidly transform C-containing intermediates, resulting in higher methanol conversion and lower CO selectivity. As a result, the quenched optimal catalyst achieves 100 % methanol conversion and 0.05 % CO selectivity at 280 ℃, exhibiting the excellent catalytic performance in MSR reaction. In practical applications, structured catalysts are more attractive for large-scale catalytic reactions owing to the low pressure drop and high utilization efficiency. Therefore, ZnO-Cu 3 catalyst is coated on cordierite honeycomb ceramics with 100 % methanol conversion and 0.04 % CO selectivity at 280 ℃. After 100 h of the reaction, the structured catalyst remains ∼ 92.3 % with CO selectivity varying from 0.02 to 0.06 %, demonstrating the good catalytic stability in the long-term experiment. In addition, the evolution of reactants and intermediates on the catalyst surface are briefly described by FTIR spectra. This study offers a novel and efficient approach to obtain highly active and durable catalysts with great potential for industrial-scale preparation and application.
