Superior acidic catalytic activity and stability of Fe-doped HTaWO6 nanotubes

He Liu,Haitao Zhang,Linfeng Fei,Hongbin Ma,Guoying Zhao,CheeLeung Mak,Xixiang Zhang,Suojiang Zhang

Fe-doped HTaWO6 (H1−3xFexTaWO6, x = 0.23) nanotubes as highly active solid acid catalysts were prepared via an exfoliation–scrolling–exchange process. The specific surface area and pore volume of undoped nanotubes (20.8 m2 g−1, 0.057 cm3 g−1) were remarkably enhanced through Fe3+ ion-exchange (>100 m2 g−1, 0.547 cm3 g−1). Doping Fe ions into the nanotubes endowed them with improved thermal stability due to the stronger interaction between the intercalated Fe3+ ions and the host layers. This interaction also facilitated the preservation of effective Brønsted acid sites and the generation of new acid sites. The integration of these functional roles resulted in Fe-doped nanotubes with high acidic catalytic activities in the Friedel–Crafts alkylation of anisole and the esterification of acetic acid. Facile accessibility to active sites, generation of effective Brønsted acid sites, high stability of the tubular structure and strong acid sites were found to synergistically contribute to the excellent acidic catalytic efficiency. Additionally, the activity of cycled nanocatalysts can be easily recovered through annealing treatment.

Fe-mediated ICAR ATRP of methyl methacrylate on photoinduced miniemulsion polymerization

Xue-Hui Zhan

The initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were investigated in microemulsion under light irradiation with ethyl 2-bromoisbutyrate (EBiB) as an ATRP initiator, ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O) as a catalyst, N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-1,2-ethanediamine (TMEDA) as a ligand, and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator and reducing agent. The linear dependence of ln([M] 0 /[M]) on polymerization time was observed, indicating that the polymerization was living polymerization. Furthermore, the number-average molecular weights (Mn), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and molecular weight distributions (MWD) of the PMMA obtained from GPC were controlled. The product was characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and GPC. The living features were verified by chain-extended with MMA with the obtained PMMA as macroinitiator.

Efficient Ammonia Electrosynthesis from Nitrate on Non-Noble Fe/CeO2 Catalyst

Xu Pengfei,Ma Haiming,Shen Wenjuan,Quan Fengjiao,Li Jianfen,He Yun

Ammonia (NH 3 ) can be used as a fertilizer, a chemical or a new generation of fuel and has important agricultural and industrial value. Electrochemical NO 3 – -to-NH 3 (NITRR) can realize the conversion of waste into treasure and waste resources, which is a promising method for ammonia synthesis. However, the process of NITRR is very complicated, resulting in product diversification and poor selectivity. In this work, an iron modified cerium oxide in rod form (Fe/CeO 2 -rod) catalysts was designed and used for the NITRR. The Fe/CeO 2 -rod catalyst showed excellent activity, and achieves high Faradaic efficiency (FE 95%) and NH 3 yield rate (4.04 mg h –1  cm –2 ) in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte at – 0.52 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, this catalyst exhibits a negligible activity decay during continuous electrolysis for 25 h. Further experiments provide the important role of Fe, which promote the formation of hydrogen radicals (H*). This study may provide new pathways to improve the activity of inexpensive catalysts for NITRR. Graphical Abstract

Controllable fabrication of monodisperse Fe-doped polystyrene spheres using microfluidic technology

Hao Liu,Qiang Chen,Sufeng Chen,Jie Li,Qianqian Gu,Meifang Liu

Doped polymer spheres are essential for preparing targets for the inertial confined fusion (ICF) experiments since they can provide important information about the implosion. To prepare Fe-doped polystyrene (PS) spheres, ferrocene-doped PS spheres were successfully prepared by a straightforward method combining physical doping and microfluidic technology. The effect of ferrocene on the quality of the PS spheres was investigated and the relevant mechanism was discussed. Due to the compatibility of PS, ferrocene and fluorobenzene, the Fe-doped polystyrene spheres exhibited good monodispersity, sphericity and surface finish when the ferrocene content in the oil phase solution was lower than 3 %. These properties can meet stringent design requirements for ICF. This study provides valuable insights for the preparation of doped polymer spheres for ICF experiments.

Fe3C/Fe implanted hierarchical porous carbon as efficient electromagnetic wave absorber

Shijiang Feng,Rong Qiang,Yulong Shao,Xiao Yang,Rui Xue,Qian Ma,Fangjie Ren,Yuancheng Ding,Xu Wu,Lei Rong,Jingbo Fang,Caihong Chen,Yiheng Zhang

The rapid development of communication technology has led to severe microwave pollution, which presents a challenge for microwave-absorbing composites. Current research suggests achieving superior microwave absorption requires the use of multi-component operation and ingenious structural design. Consequently, the present study has prepared continuous porous carbon (CPC) materials doped with large amounts of Fe 3 C/Fe nanoparticles (Fe@CPC) using carbonization and acid etching. By balancing the advantages of the above strategies, it is possible to address issues such as poor impedance match, single loss capacity, easy oxidation of magnetic metals/alloys, and the limited absorption bandwidth of conventional absorbing materials at the same time. The material exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −23.2 dB with an efficient absorption range of 5.3 GHz at 1.9 mm at a filler content of just 10 wt% in the paraffin matrix. In this paper, the samples with a continuous porous structure were prepared by a simple method, and the properties were excellent due to the appropriate preparation method and the synergistic effect of the multi-component composite. The porous structure facilitates the presence of a considerable number of active sites, which enables the loading of a substantial quantity of metal ions. Furthermore, nanoparticles are capable of aggregating and dispersing on the surface. This paper presents a theoretical framework for understanding the synergistic effect of microwave radiation through interfacial polarization and micro-scale magnetic interaction. Nevertheless, there are still obstacles to overcome in terms of achieving precise control over the structural design and ensuring the compatible integration of metal components.

Facet-dependent hematite reactivity in Cr(VI) removal with Fe(II)

Shengnan Zhang,Lingyi Li,Junxue Li,Wei Cheng

Hematite displays diverse crystal structures and often coexists with Fe(II), both of which are crucial in controlling the fate and mobility of Cr(VI). However, the mechanisms underlying Cr(VI) removal in the presence of Fe(II) on various hematite facets remain elusive. This study aims to elucidate the facet-dependent reactivity of hematite nanocrystals in conjunction with Fe(II) for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Hematite nanoplates (HNPs), predominantly composed of {001} facets, and nanorods (HNRs), exposing both {001} and {110} facets, were synthesized and characterized. Their Cr(VI) removal capabilities were evaluated in hematite–Cr(VI) and hematite–Fe(II)–Cr(VI) systems, as well as the Fe(II)–Cr(VI) system. The adsorption of Fe(II) and Cr(VI) on hematite surfaces was highly dependent on the crystal facets and pH, with HNRs demonstrating superior Cr(VI) adsorption over HNPs, especially under acidic conditions. Neutral pH favored Fe(II)–Cr(VI) redox reactions and Fe(II) adsorption. The hematite–Fe(II) couple displayed a synergistic effect in removing Cr(VI) under acidic conditions, which was not observed under neutral conditions. The presence of Fe(II) notably enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption onto hematite, and bound Fe(II) facilitated electron transfer, accelerating Cr(VI) reduction. HNRs–Fe(II) exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal efficiency than HNPs–Fe(II) due to their lower free corrosion potential and improved electron transport properties. This research underscores the potential of facet engineering in optimizing hematite nanocrystals for environmental remediation, specifically in Cr(VI)-contaminated environments.

Jinlu Shang,Yongjun Chen,Fangliang Wang,Jing Yang,Yi Li,Liuxuan Yang,Xiuqiong Liu,Zhirong Zhong,Chaochi Yue,Meiling Zhou

Background Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer, and single-modality treatments often fail to prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis. Combination therapy has emerged as an effective approach to improve treatment outcomes. Methods In this study, we developed a multifunctional nanoplatform, MIL@DOX@ICG, utilizing MIL-101-NH2(Fe) as a carrier to co-deliver the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX) and the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG). MIL-101-NH2(Fe) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Drug release was evaluated under different pH conditions, and the photothermal effect was tested under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Hydroxyl radical and reactive oxygen species generation capacities were quantified. Cellular studies using B16F10 cells assessed cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, migration inhibition, and colony formation suppression. In vivo experiments in melanoma-bearing mice evaluated antitumor efficacy and systemic safety through tumor growth inhibition, histological analyses, and toxicity assessments. Results MIL@DOX@ICG exhibited a uniform octahedral structure with a particle size of approximately 139 nm and high drug loading efficiencies for DOX (33.70%) and ICG (30.59%). The nanoplatform demonstrated pH-responsive drug release and potent photothermal effects. The generation of hydroxyl radicals via the Fenton reaction and reactive oxygen species production under NIR laser irradiation by MIL@DOX@ICG were confirmed. In vitro assessments revealed significant cytotoxicity of MIL@DOX@ICG against B16F10 cells under NIR laser irradiation, with improved efficacy in inhibiting cell proliferation and migration. In vivo studies confirmed the superior antitumor efficacy of MIL@DOX@ICG + NIR treatment, synergistically harnessing chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and chemodynamic therapy effects while maintaining excellent biocompatibility. Conclusion Our findings underscore the potential of MIL-101-NH2(Fe) nanoparticles as a versatile and effective platform for synergistic melanoma therapy, offering a promising strategy for overcoming the limitations of conventional treatment modalities.

Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 by Multimetallic 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe

Hui Han,He Cui,Jiabo Wang,Kai Ge,Yongfang Yang

Graphical In this paper, 2D MOF-Co, 2D MOF-Co/Cu, and 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe are designed and prepared using 1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid (1,4-BDC) as organic ligands. Their charge transfer, separation efficiency, and effects on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction are studied. The results show that 2D multimetallic MOF-Co/Cu/Fe has better photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity, so it has higher research value and development prospect in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. In this study, 2D multimetallic MOFs combined with the advantages of 2D nanosheets, with the synergetic effect of multimetallic nodes, exhibited good photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO 2 . Herein, a 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe were successfully prepared via one-pot stirring of the solutions of multimetal salts and organic ligands at room temperature. Introduction of the second and third metal (Cu and Fe) into MOF-Co does not change the 2D morphology of MOFs, although it improved the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance by broadening the light absorption range of 2D MOF-Co, accelerating the separation efficiency and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers. Upon irradiation with full-spectrum light, the average CO yield of 2D MOF-Co/Cu/Fe achieved 17.06 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , being about 1.8 and 1.2 times that of 2D MOF-Co and 2D MOF-Co/Cu. This work provides an insight into 2D multimetallic MOFs-based photocatalysts in catalytic CO 2 reduction.

Total nitrogen removal by Fe-activated carbon composite coupled with persulfate

Weishi Huang,Chenxi Wu,Minghao Gou,Xiaochun Wu,Le Zhang,Ting Liu,Jianlong Wang

The conversion of nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 − -N) or ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) to dinitrogen (N 2 ) by chemical process for total nitrogen (TN) removal is meaningful, but still a challenge in wastewater treatment. Herein, zero valent iron (Fe 0 ) loaded active carbon (Fe 0 @AC) was prepared and used to remove TN from the nitrogen-containing wastewater by an efficient chemical reduction coupled with oxidation process (FeR-PSO). In the step of NO 3 − -N reduction by Fe 0 @AC, Fe 0 @AC with 25 wt% Fe 0 could reduce 100 % NO 3 − -N with the initial concentration of 50 mg N/L after 60 min at the Fe 0 @AC dosage of 9 g/L and initial pH of 3.0, and over 30 % NO 3 − -N could be reduced to N 2 . In the subsequent oxidation step, persulfate (PS) and magnesium oxide (MgO) were introduced into the solution after NO 3 − -N reduction to selectively oxidize NH 4 + -N to N 2 . The removal efficiency of NH 4 + -N and N 2 selectivity after 30 min were 100 % and over 90 %, respectively, at the MgO dosage of 8 g/L and the PS dosage of 20.25 g/L. The developed FeR-PSO process could remove 93.40 % of TN from simulated wastewater, and over 90 % of TN from two actual pickle factory wastewaters. The possible mechanisms of NO 3 − -N reduction and NH 4 + -N oxidation by FeR-PSO process were proposed. These findings provide new insights for TN removal from NO 3 − -N containing wastewater or wastewater containing both NO 3 − -N and NH 4 + -N by chemical process.

Transition metal-promoted Fe-based catalysts for photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation

Shuai Yan,Yuting Wang,Guangyao Chen,Wanli Ma,Yingquan Chen,Xianhua Wang,Kuo Zeng,Yonggang Yao,Hongqi Sun,Haiping Yang,Hanping Chen

Transition metals doping for Fe-based catalysts has been demonstrated in promoting the activity and regulating the selectivity in both reverse water gas shift reaction and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. However, there are few studies that concern their catalytic performances tailored by these promoters under photothermal conditions. In this study, a series of typical MFeOx (M = Mn, Co, Cu, Zn) catalysts were synthesized with a facile co-precipitation method and their photothermal CO2 hydrogenation properties were evaluated. The results showed that the doping of Co, Cu, and Zn enhanced the activity and regulated the selectivity of Fe-based catalysts, e.g., CoFe achieving a C2+ yield of 1.73 mmol·h-1·g-1 while ZnFe almost doubling the CO2 conversion under irradiations. Mechanistic studies suggest that Co and Cu facilitated the reduction of Fe species, resulting in favorable CO2 and H2 activation. At last, a light-induced direct CO2 dissociation pathway was proposed with in situ EPR and DRIFTS characterization and analysis of the undoped Fe and ZnFe catalyst. This study provides a novel perspective on transition metal promoters for photothermal CO2 hydrogenation over Fe-based catalysts.

Synergistic catalysis of Fe-Co bimetallic sulfides for efficient water splitting

Hongyue Li,Jun Yao,Zhiqiang Peng,Mengyun Yang,Taotao Zhao,Peng Wang,Yupei Zhao

As is well known that, transition metal sulfides often face challenges such as excessive intermediate adsorption and poor electrical conductivity, which greatly limits their use in large-scale water electrolysis. Herein, we prepare a Fe-Co bimetallic synergistic catalyst based on solvothermal method. This catalyst ((FeCo) 9 S 8 /C-1) exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance due to multiple synergistic effects. For instance, low overpotentials of 284.7 mV for OER and 310 mV for HER at 10 mA·cm −2 could be reached in 1 M KOH, while the electrochemical active surface area reaches 40.25 m 2 ·g −1 , which is twofold compared to bare Co 9 S 8 . Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further reveal the strong charge transfer between Fe and Co would reduce the energy barriers for the rate-determining steps, enhancing the desorption of *OOH and *H intermediates, as well as improving the electrocatalytic efficiency. This study opens new avenue for designing other dual-transition metal sulfides for water splitting with high-performance.

Synergistic solar-magnetic desalination via covalently anchored Fe₃O₄/hydrogel composites

Juan Du,Hao Fang,Jialiang Ma,Jing Lin,Shikuo Li,Yu Jiang,Fangzhi Huang

Synergistic photothermal-magnetothermal activation overcomes environmental interference (e.g., cloud cover) that critically limits solar evaporator efficiency, enabling robust all-weather vapor generation. Herein, we demonstrate in-situ synthesis of a covalently integrated Fe₃O₄/hydrogel composite via ice-templating and interfacial covalent bonding engineering. Si-O-Fe bonds anchor KH-570 onto Fe₃O₄, enabling copolymerization of surface-grafted methacryloyloxy groups with acrylamide monomers for covalent network grafting, while programmed gravitational sedimentation yields a hierarchical porous hydrophilic magnetic gel solar interfacial evaporator (MSE) with magnetothermal interface. This architecture reduces evaporation enthalpy, achieving 2.33 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun. Significantly, synergistic activation by an alternating magnetic field and 1 sun irradiation boosts the evaporation rate for 3.5 wt% saline water to 2.94 kg m −2  h −1 . This work establishes the magnetothermal-photothermal synergy within the covalently integrated MSE as an effective material design paradigm for all-weather solar desalination.
