In this work, a sensitive DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor had been developed for Pb 2+ detection with platinum nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 composite as signal labels. The morphological and compositional properties of the PtNPs/TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 were examined by using transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The result showed that the shape of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals were the cubic, the average length ranged from 150 to 300 nm, and the PtNPs with about 3–4 nm in diameter were well dispersed on the surface of TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 . TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 were used as a “carrier” to load the PtNPs tracers as well as for Apt3 immobilization. In turn, the DNAzyme structure of Apt1 and Apt2 was immobilized on the gold electrode surface as the capture probes. Subsequently, DNAzyme modified electrodes reacted with target Pb 2+ and the Apt3/PtNPs/TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 composite were deposited on the electrode surface. The performance of the DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor was tested by recording the electrocatalytic reduction current toward H 2 O 2 . Enhanced sensitivity was achieved by TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites as a nanocarrier in order to PtNPs at a high ratio. The DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor described here exhibited excellent sensitivity and specificity for target ion. This work represented a promising potential for on-site testing Pb 2+ in real drinking water and serum sample analysis.

In this work poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated SnO2-Fe2O3continuous nanotubes with a uniform core–shell structure have been demonstrated for rapid sensitive detection of iodide ions. The SnO2-Fe2O3nanotubes were firstly fabricated via an electrospinning technique and following calcination process. An in situ polymerization approach was then performed to coat a uniform PEDOT shell on the surface of as-prepared SnO2-Fe2O3nanotubes by vapor phase polymerization, using Fe2O3on the surface of nanotubes as an oxidant in an acidic condition. The resultant PEDOT@SnO2-Fe2O3core-shell nanotubes exhibit a fast response time (~4 s) toward iodide ion detection and a linear current response ranging from 10 to 100 μM, with a detection limit of 1.5 μM and sensitivity of 70 μA/mM/cm2. The facile fabrication process and high sensing performance of this study can promote a wide range of potential applications in human health monitoring and biosensing systems. Keywords:in situ vapor polymerization;electrospun nanotubes;ion-selective electrodes;iodide ion detection

Experiments were conducted in a bench-scale fixed bed reactor with α-Fe 2 O 3 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 samples to investigate the mechanism of Hg 0 oxidation in the presence of HCl at 80–680 °C respectively. HCl is one of the main impurities in coal-derived fuel gas and its contribution to Hg 0 removal is complex and necessary to research. The experimental results showed that the Hg 0 removal mechanism with HCl could probably be divided into three stages based on the reaction temperature. At low temperature, the Eley–Rideal mechanism with HCl pre-adsorption was the most probable Hg 0 oxidation pathway. As the temperature increased more than 280 °C, Hg 0 removal efficiency differs significantly on α-Fe 2 O 3 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 , and the most suitable mechanism was Langmuir–Hinshelwood. With the increasing temperature to 680 °C, the homogeneous reaction between HCl and Hg 0 as well as Langmuir–Hinshelwood are responsible for the transformation of Hg 0 . We also discovered that the reaction time played a significant impact on the Hg 0 removal at low temperature, and caused the secondary mercury removal efficiency owing to the probable product of FeCl 3 . Additionally, HBr was adopted to compare with HCl, which obviously enhanced the Hg 0 oxidation on α-Fe 2 O 3 .

A novel magnetic molecular imprinting composites (MICs) were successfully synthesized through cross-linked chitosan and γ-Fe 2 O 3 particles, and the selective removal of aqueous NOR was demonstrated. The γ-Fe 2 O 3 particles embedded in MICs were still of intrinsic crystal and complexed with both amino and hydroxyl groups of chitosan. Adsorption behavior of NOR onto MICs could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm model. Excellent selective NOR adsorption was identified with competition of sulfadiazine (SD), ofloxacin (OFL) and phenol, respectively. It could be ascribed to the memory cavities for NOR molecules, as well as the formation of triple intermolecular hydrogen bonds with suitable angle and length. Furthermore, application feasibility of MICs in NOR-spiked municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent was investigated. Competing with the effluent organic matters (EfOM), effective adsorption performance of NOR could be still obtained. Effect of humic and fulvic acid-like organics could be effectively reduced, while adsorption of tryptophan-like substances was slightly enhanced. In addition, it was found that Fenton-like oxidation instead of NaOH washing would be more appropriate for the multiple regenerations of MICs. The former would reserve more memory cavities and lead to oxidative decomposition of the desorbed NOR into micromolecular organics of low environmental impacts.

Surface exposed catalytic active species are thought to be responsible for overall catalytic activity and selectivity. In this paper, controllable contents of iron oxides were in situ introduced into the inner surface of anionic surfactant-templated mesoporous silica (AMS) by the metal-modified anionic surfactant templating route, in which anionic micelles decorated with different amounts of Fe2+ were direct utilized to assemble with organosilicate. The characterization results demonstrated that, after thermal treatments, Fe2O3 species were in situ formed and highly-dispersed in the channels of AMS, and the pore size was accordingly tailored to the microporous level (<2 nm). In each AMS catalyst, Fe2O3 showed better dispersion and stability compared with the post-impregnated method. Moreover, the catalytic performances of phenol hydroxylation on the as-synthesized catalysts were significantly enhanced, and the optimal catalyst (Fe/Si = 3.5 wt%) gave a phenol conversion of 44.3% with a selectivity of 82.6% to dihydroxybenzene. By comparison with some reference mesoporous silica catalysts (0.15Fe/MCM-41 and 0.15Fe/SBA-15), the iron-based micropore-enriched silica catalyst (Fe/AMS) gave an obviously higher selectivity to dihydroxybenzene. Finally, the optimal catalyst was examined for at least 5 runs in phenol hydroxylation.

A low band gap and visible light-responsive heterogeneous Photo-Fenton catalyst of γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs micron composite was prepared under the one-pot hydrothermal method. The Photo-Fenton degradation of γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs towards dye solution of rhodamine B(RhB), methyl blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) was studied comparatively with α-Fe 2 O 3 . The γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs exhibited remarkable catalytic performance for various dyes and with a first-order rate ( k ) of 14 times higher than that of initial α-Fe 2 O 3 with a low concentration of H 2 O 2 of 0.049 mmol . L −1 and a wider pH range of 3.1–7.1. The microstructure of the compounds was observed by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS characterization results suggested that the γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs nanocomposite was formed through the stable Fe–O–C bonds, thus, the band gap decreased, and it is more favorable for the distance of holes and electrons. The free radical trapping experiment and EPR analysis indicated that •OH and 1 O 2 were the major active species during the typical photo-Fenton reaction. What's more, the γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs also exhibited good stability and magnetic properties. DFT conclusion shows that the mechanism of the potential determination step (PDS) on α-Fe 2 O 3 (220) is the cleavage of H 2 O 2 with an energy barrier of only 0.08 eV, which is 0.54 eV lower than that of OH* on γ-Fe 2 O 3 (220). Thus it can be deemed that γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs perform much higher catalytic activity for the dissociation of H 2 O 2 than α-Fe 2 O 3 . This work gives a feasible and economical countermeasure of visible light Photo-Fenton dispose of dye wastewater with a recyclable magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 /CQDs micron catalyst.

A facile strategy is reported for the fabrication of Pt-loaded core–shell nanocomposite ellipsoids (Fe 2 O 3 -Pt@DSL) consisting of ellipsoidal Fe 2 O 3 cores, double-layered La 2 O 3 shells and deposited Pt nanoparticles (NPs). The formation of the doubled-shelled structure uses Fe 2 O 3 -Pt@mSiO 2 as template sacrificial agent and it involves the re-deposition of silica and self-assembly of metal oxide units. The preparation methods of double-shelled metal oxides avoid repeated coating and etching and could be utilized to fabricate other shaped double-shelled composites. Characterization results indicated that the Fe 2 O 3 -Pt@DSL nanocomposites possessed mesoporous structure and tunable shell thickness. Moreover, due to the formation of Fe 2 O 3 and La 2 O 3 composites, Pt NPs can also be stabilized via deposition on chemically active oxides with a synergistic effect. Therefore, as a catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, Fe 2 O 3 -Pt@DSL showed superior catalytic activity and reusability due to structural superiority and enhanced composite synergy. Finally, well-dispersed Pt NPs were encapsulated into the void between the shell layers to construct the Fe 2 O 3 -Pt@DSL-Pt catalyst.

In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) have been firstly used as a nucleating agent, which simultaneously reduces the supercooling degree of sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) and improves its thermal conductivity. A series of SAT composite phase change materials (PCMs) for potential latent heat thermal energy storage applications were prepared by a ball milling method using carboxymethyl cellulose as a thickening agent and sodium dodecyl sulfonate as a dispersant. In order to investigate the effect of the mass ratio of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles on the supercooling degree of SAT, various α-Fe 2 O 3 contents (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 mass%) were added into the SAT matrix. It was found that the supercooling degree of the SAT composite PCM was reduced to 0 °C at a α-Fe 2 O 3 content of 0.8 mass%. Furthermore, no chemical reaction between SAT and α-Fe 2 O 3 occurred, and the presence of α-Fe 2 O 3 had no effect on the energy storage capability of SAT. The thermal conductivity of the SAT composite PCM was improved by 22.5% due to the addition of 0.8 mass% α-Fe 2 O 3 . After 60 melting–freezing cycles, the composite PCMs retained excellent stability with a small reduction in the phase change temperature (0.33 °C) and low latent heat loss rate (0.796%).

The disinfection of drinking water is essential for eliminating pathogens and preventing waterborne diseases. However, this process generates various disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which toxicological research indicates can have detrimental effects on living organisms. Moreover, the safety of these DBPs has not been sufficiently assessed, underscoring the need for a comprehensive evaluation of their toxic effects and associated health risks. Compared to traditional methods for studying the toxicity of pollutants, emerging electrochemical sensing technologies offer advantages such as simplicity, speed, and sensitivity, presenting an effective means for toxicity research on pollutants. However, challenges remain in this field, including the need to improve electrode sensitivity and reduce electrode costs. In this study, a pencil graphite electrode (PGE) was modified with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) and nano-iron (III) oxide (α-Fe2O3) to fabricate a low-cost electrode with excellent electrocatalytic performance for cell-active substances. Subsequently, a novel cellular electrochemical sensor was constructed for the sensitive detection of the toxicity of three drinking water DBPs. The half inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 2-chlorophenylacetonitrile (2-CPAN), 3-chlorophenylacetonitrile (3-CPAN), and 4-chlorophenylacetonitrile (4-CPAN) for HepG2 cells were 660.69, 831.76, and 812.83 µM, respectively. This study provides technical support and scientific evidence for the toxicity detection and safety assessment of emerging contaminants.

Sulfite activation with iron-based heterogeneous activators is a promising technology for the removal of organic contaminants from water. However, the slow valence transformation of >Fe(II)/>Fe(III) compromises sulfite activation efficiency. Regarding that the oxygen vacancy (Vo) can modulate the charge distribution and thus enhance >Fe(II)/>Fe(III) valence transformation via rapid electron transfer, Vo-enriched γ-Fe 2 O 3 is constructed for sulfite activation (simplified as the γ-Fe 2 O 3 -Vo/sulfite system). The γ-Fe 2 O 3 -Vo/sulfite system exhibits excellent abatement performance for iohexol (IOX) with the efficiency as high as 90.2 % within 1 h of reaction at pH 8.5, in which sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO • ) are the major species. Electrochemical and DFT calculations reveal that Vo-enriched γ-Fe 2 O 3 possesses lower electrical impedance and the concomitant higher electron transfer efficiency. According to a series of characterizations, the enhance >Fe(II)/>Fe(III) valence transformation is confirmed to contribute to sulfite activation via the regulation of the electronic structure by the Vo. In addition, the degradation pathways of IOX are proposed by analyzing the degradation products of IOX by UPLC-QTOF-MS. Finally, the effects of different influencing factors on the degradation of IOX and the cyclic performance suggest the system shows strong resistance to interference and reusability, exhibiting superior application potential.

In electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR), the generation of active hydrogen (*H) and its poor utilization in conversion of various nitrate intermediates often cause mismatched kinetics, resulting in low ammonia yield rate (YR NH3 ) and Faraday efficiency (FE NH3 ). Herein, we construct a spatially-confined Cu/Fe 2 O 3 heterointerfaces within porous carbon fiber, featuring oxygen vacancy-rich iron oxide nanoparticles (∼14.7 nm) interface-coupled well-dispersed Cu nanocrystals. The interfacial metallic copper sites with optimized interfacial electron transfer accelerate the consumption of NO 2 – through supplying the most abundant active *H to equilibrate NITRR kinetics. The easy desorption of generated NH 3 from active sites facilitates the accelerated reaction cycles by rapidly exposing the spent active sites. Correspondingly, this catalyst achieves nearly 100 % nitrate conversion, with a YR NH3 of 81.3 mg h −1 mg cat -1 , FE NH3 of 98.11 %, and 100 % NH 3 selectivity without any nitrite accumulation, outperforming most state-to-art catalysts as reported. Impressively, when nitrite acts as reactant, ammonia synthesis through nitrite reduction reaches YR NH3 of 99 mg h −1 mg cat -1 and FE NH3 of 99.44 % outperforming all the same series reported. Moreover, active *H quenching and isotope labeling experiments uncover the generation of the most abundant active *H species and their high utilization among the reported results. Density function theory (DFT) calculations further indicate the interfacial Cu/Fe 2 O 3 regulates the d-band center of the catalyst, optimizing the adsorption of nitrate and further lowering the reaction energy barrier of the decisive step (*NO→*NOH).

In the paper, a high-performance electrode was reported for the determination of uric acid (UA) and dopamine (DA) by loading nanocomposites Fe 2 O 3 /poly-neutral red (PNR)/partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The nanocomposites Fe 2 O 3 /PNR/rGO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under the optimized condition, the peak currents of UA and DA showed good linear relationships with their concentrations in the range of 1 × 10 –6 to 1 × 10 –3 mol L −1 and 3 × 10 –7 to 9 × 10 –5 mol L −1 , respectively. The recovery rates were 93.0–102.0% and 99.2–104.6% for detecting DA from medical injections and human specimens, including urine and serum, respectively, 95.5–105.0% for UA from urine and serum samples. Obviously, this Fe 2 O 3 /PNR/rGO/GCE is expected to be used in production quality control and clinical test. Graphical abstract
