Enhancing the structural and interfacial durability of Ni-rich cathodes under extended operating conditions via Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping

Adila Abulimiti,Yudong Zhang,Yiyuan Hua,Yanjun Miu,Tong Zhou,Xuejing Zhang,Can Cui,Weiji Dai,Cuijiao Zhao,Saifang Huang

Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping jointly stabilizes Ni-rich layered cathodes under harsh operating conditions. • Tri-doping reduces Li + /Ni 2+ mixing and stabilizes the transition-metal layer and oxygen framework. • MZN-NCM delivers excellent cycling stability at room temperature, high temperature, and high cutoff voltage. • Mg/Zr/Nb co-doping improves charge transfer and Li + diffusion, enhancing the durability of Ni-rich cathodes. Ni-rich layered cathode materials (LiNi x M 1-x O 2 , x ≥ 0.8) offer high capacity and high energy density, but their cycling stability severely suffers from Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, H2-H3 phase-transition strain, interfacial side reactions, and sluggish Li + transport, especially under harsh conditions such as elevated temperature and high cutoff voltage. In this work, a Mg/Zr/Nb tri-doping strategy is proposed to construct Li(Ni 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 ) 0.97 Zr 0.01 Mg 0.01 Nb 0.01 O 2 (MZN-NCM) cathode for synergistic stabilization under different operating conditions. The results show that Mg/Zr/Nb co-doping regulates the Ni valence distribution, reduces Li + /Ni 2+ cation mixing, enhances the stability of the transition-metal layer and oxygen framework, and suppresses interfacial side reactions and CEI degradation during cycling. MZN-NCM retains 90.1% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 25 °C and 89.8% at 60 °C, compared with only 59.8% and 41.7% for Pristine-NCM, respectively. Under a high cutoff voltage of 4.5 V, MZN-NCM also maintains a higher capacity retention of 87.7% after 100 cycles. Moreover, kinetic and interfacial chemical analyses indicate that multielement doping improves both charge-transfer behavior and Li + diffusion, enabling a synergistic enhancement of structural stability, interfacial stability, and ion transport. This work demonstrates that Mg/Zr/Nb synergistic doping is an effective material-design strategy for extending the applicable operating conditions of Ni-rich cathodes.

Synergistic Enhancement of Cr (VI) Adsorption via Al/Mg Co-Doping of UiO-66-NH2: Synthesis, Characterization, and Mechanistic Insights

Afridi Muhammad Naveed,Adil Sawaira,Fatima Rida,Khan Fazal Maula,Ali Imran,Mir Irshad Ahmad,Miao Baoji,Lee Kang Hoon

Heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater remains a critical global environmental concern. In this study, an Al/Mg/Zr-MOF (AMZ-MOF) was synthesized via a solvothermal method and systematically evaluated for Cr (VI) removal from aqueous solutions. Comparative analysis demonstrated that AMZ-MOF exhibited superior Cr (VI) removal efficiency relative to pristine Zr-MOF, Mg/Zr-MOF, and Al/Zr-MOF. The synthesized AMZ-MOF composite was subjected to comprehensive characterization using FESEM, TEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, and XPS analyses. The study systematically investigated the influence of key operational parameters, including contact time, temperature, pH, and initial Cr (VI) concentration, on the composite’s sorption behavior. AMZ-MOF demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving a maximum Cr (VI) sorption capacity of 185.2 mg/g. Remarkably, the sorbent exhibited rapid initial uptake kinetics, reaching adsorption equilibrium within 120 min. Mechanistic insight was gained through adsorption isotherm and kinetic modeling, revealing that the process is best described by the Langmuir isotherm and the Pseudo-Second-Order kinetic model, suggesting monolayer adsorption onto a heterogeneous surface and chemisorption as the rate-limiting step, respectively. Further FTIR and XPS analyses corroborated the proposed sorption mechanism, clarifying the key functional groups and surface interactions involved in Cr (VI) removal. The proposed adsorbent demonstrated excellent reusability over five adsorption–desorption cycles, underscoring its stability and practical potential for Cr (VI) remediation.

Engineering Mg-doped CoMo-LDH as an efficient sensitizer for NIR-II light-enhanced photo-sonodynamic therapy and immune activation

Zhang Huifeng,Li Mengyang,Wang Tao,Zhu Huifen,Deng Lin,Guo Fulian,Zhang Zhihua,Hu Tingting,Liang Ruizheng,Cao Min,Li Zhangping

Cancer remains a critical global health burden, posing a severe threat to human life. Photo-sonodynamic therapy (PSDT), which combines photodynamic (PDT) and sonodynamic (SDT) modalities, has emerged as a promising strategy to overcome limitations in tissue penetration and therapeutic precision. Despite progress, the broader application of PSDT is hindered by PDT’s potential phototoxicity/limited therapeutic penetration depth and SDT’s thermal/mechanical damage under high ultrasound (US) power, as well as the complex synthesis of sensitizers and their suboptimal reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Here, we engineer Mg-doped defect-rich CoMo-LDH (a-CoMgMo-LDH) nanosheets via a doping-etching strategy to address these challenges, enabling on-demand treatment from superficial to deep-seated tumors. This sensitizer exhibits exceptional dual responsiveness to NIR-II light and US. It achieves a relative singlet oxygen quantum yield (1.53) superior to most reported photosensitizers, while its sonodynamic ROS yield surpasses that of commercial TiO 2 by 22.3 times and outperforms most reported sonosensitizers, ranking among the highest reported. After bovine serum albumin (BSA) functionalization, a-CoMgMo-LDH-BSA triggers ROS-driven apoptosis and immunogenic cell death under dual irradiation, effectively suppressing tumor growth and metastasis. By integrating NIR-II-enhanced PDT/SDT into a single-component platform, this work advances precision oncology with deep-tumor targeting and immune modulation, offering a transformative strategy for clinical translation. Graphical Mg-doped defect-rich CoMo-LDH (a-CoMgMo-LDH) nanosystem is engineered through doping-etching strategy as a new photo-sonosensitizer for highly efficient photo-sonodynamic therapy, which exhibits remarkable ROS generation efficiency under NIR-II/US stimulation, achieving a 1 O 2 quantum yield of 1.53 under NIR-II light irradiation and 22.3 times ROS yields that of commercial TiO 2 under US irradiation, respectively. After bovine serum albumin (BSA) modification, a-CoMgMo-LDH-BSA efficiently kills cancer cells and eliminates tumors by inducing dual-modal ROS generation and immunogenic cell death

Cr/F co-doped spinel LiMn2O4 for selective lithium recovery from high-Mg salt-lake brine by hybrid capacitive deionization

Yu Qing,Yang Bao,Yuhao Pan

Cr/F co-doped LiMn 2 O 4 was compared with undoped, Cr-only and F-only spinel controls. • Co-doping raised 1C capacity to 124.6 mAh g −1 and HCDI Li + uptake to 35.07 mg g −1 . • The co-doped electrode kept 83% of its Li + uptake over 100 cycles with 1.4% Mn loss. • A reference-cell test traced most capacity fade to the carbon counter electrode. • Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 24.0 in untreated old brine with acid-free desorption. Spinel LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) is a Li + -selective intercalation host for hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI), but Jahn–Teller distortion and Mn dissolution limit its durability in Mg-rich brines. Here, Cr 3+ and F − were introduced at the nominal cationic and anionic sites of LMO to obtain LiCr 0.05 Mn 1.95 O 3.95 F 0.05 (CFLMO), and undoped, Cr-only (CrLMO) and F-only (FLMO) controls were prepared by the same route. XRD and FTIR showed that the average spinel framework was retained, and Cr 2p and F 1s XPS detected both added elements near the CFLMO surface. At 1C, CFLMO delivered a discharge capacity of 124.6 mAh g −1 (84% of the theoretical value), compared with 92.1 mAh g −1 for LMO. In HCDI tests with 32.74 mg L −1 Li + , CFLMO reached a salt adsorption capacity (SAC) of 35.07 mg g −1 at a charge efficiency of 0.89. After 100 adsorption–desorption cycles against an activated‑carbon (AC) counter electrode, CFLMO retained 83% of its initial SAC with a Mn dissolution ratio of 1.4%; replacing the AC electrode in an LMO||AC reference cell restored part of the lost adsorption response, identifying a counter-electrode contribution to cell-level capacity loss. In untreated Yiliping salt-lake old brine (Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio 36.1), three CFLMO electrodes recovered 37.5 ± 1.5 mg g −1 Li + with a Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 24.0 ± 2.7, and desorption into pure water lowered the Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio to 1.52 ± 0.18. The matched-control and real-brine results support Cr/F-modified LMO as a candidate for selective lithium recovery from Mg-rich salt-lake brines.

Engineering synergistic Mg/C Co-doped sites on ZIF-67-derived cobalt catalysts for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation toward tetracycline removal

Shuaishuai Zhang,Xinan Sun,Jiaxi Wang,Yulong Feng,Yuchang Chen,Yiheng Chi,Meizhu Hou,Teng Miao,Lianke Zhang

Co-Mg 1.5 @C were successfully prepared to activate PMS for TC degradation. • The degradation mechanism is the synergistic effect of free radicals (SO 4 . •– , •OH, O 2 •– ) and non-free radicals ( 1 O 2 ). • A small amount of Mg doping can greatly reduce the leaching of cobalt ions. • In a continuous flow reactor, the catalyst achieved complete degradation of both TC and MB within 300 min, with the treated effluent exhibiting substantially reduced toxicity. Aquatic antibiotic pollution caused by tetracycline (TC) has posed a severe threat to ecological security and human health, and the development of efficient and stable cobalt-based catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is the key to solving this problem via advanced oxidation processes. However, the existing cobalt-based catalysts suffer from the defects of active site agglomeration, serious cobalt leaching and poor stability. In this work, a facile synthesis of Mg/C co-doped Co-based catalyst (Co-Mg@C) derived from ZIF-67 for enhanced activation of PMS toward TC degradation. The introduction of Mg not only modulates the electronic structure of Co active sites but also effectively suppresses Co agglomeration. Meanwhile, the carbon matrix derived from fumaric acid (FA) provides a conductive and porous framework, which improves both electron transfer kinetics and the overall dispersibility of the catalyst. The optimized Co-Mg 1.5 @C catalyst exhibited exceptional catalytic activity, achieving nearly complete TC removal within 60 min, while maintaining robust performance over a wide pH range and in the presence of various co-existing ions. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies confirmed that TC degradation proceeded via the synergistic action of both radical (SO 4 •– , •OH and O 2 •– ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) species. The Co-Mg 1.5 @C catalyst also displayed excellent reusability with minimal cobalt leaching and broad-spectrum activity towards multiple organic pollutants. Application tests in real water matrices and toxicity assessments further confirmed its environmental compatibility and practical feasibility. This study provides valuable insights into the rational design of cost-effective and stable MOFs-derived catalysts for advanced water treatment applications. Composition-structure-mechanism correlation in (XCoNiCuZn)O (X = Li, Na, Mg) high-entropy oxides: From cationic modulation to electrochemical performance

Yanni Li,Zhigui Zhang,Baobao Wang,Runguo Zheng,Dan Wang,Zhishuang Song,Yanguo Liu,Zhiyuan Wang

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) represent promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, yet understanding the intricate relationship between their multi-element composition, crystal structure, and lithium storage mechanism remains a fundamental challenge. This study systematically investigates this relationship in (XCoNiCuZn)O (X = Li, Na, Mg) HEOs by modulating the fifth element. While all compositions form a single rock-salt structure, the cationic radius and valence state of X dictate both the lattice parameters and the electrochemical reaction pathway. It is revealed that (LiCoNiCuZn)O and (MgCoNiCuZn)O undergo a conversion-dominated phase transition mechanism, whereas (NaCoNiCuZn)O follows a solid-solution reaction. This mechanistic divergence, elucidated through in-situ EIS, ex-situ XRD/XPS, and kinetic analysis, directly governs the electrochemical performance. The Li-based HEOs (LiCoNiCuZn)O demonstrates exceptional performance, delivering a high capacity of 549.7 mAh g −1 with 83.4% retention after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , attributable to its effective charge compensation and superior ion conductivity. This work establishes a clear correlation from cationic modulation to storage performance, offering critical guidance for the rational design of HEOs for energy storage.

Synergistic Mg/Cu co-doping toward optimizing phase transitions across the full voltage window in P2-type sodium-ion cathodes

Xinglong Liang,Yutong Nong,Weigang Wang,Cheng Peng,Yi Tian,Jingyi Zhang,Xiaowei Wang,Jiuqing Liu,Xi Li,Jiafeng Zhang,Ji Liang

P2-type layered transition metal oxides (TMOs) are among the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and energy density. However, their practical application is hindered by irreversible phase transitions and lattice oxygen loss at high voltages, while Mn 3+ -induced Jahn–Teller distortion and P2–P′2 phase transitions at low voltages accelerate structural degradation and capacity fading. Here, we present a Mg/Cu co-doping strategy to systematically regulate structural evolution and redox chemistry, addressing these key degradation mechanisms. Mg 2+ , with strong electrostatic interactions and a small ionic radius, acts as an “anchoring” agent during deep sodiation (low potential), stabilizing the transition-metal layers, suppressing Mn disproportionation and Jahn–Teller distortion, and mitigating the P2–P′2 phase transition. Cu 2+ , in contrast, functions during deep desodiation (high potential) by enhancing Ni O bond ionicity and lowering the charge-transfer barrier between O 2p and transition-metal 3d orbitals, thereby reducing lattice oxygen participation, transition-metal dissolution, and interlayer gliding, and delaying the P2–O2 phase transition. Benefiting from this synergistic effect, Na 0.67 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.65 Mg 0.1 Cu 0.05 O 2 exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, retaining 80% of its capacity after 300 cycles at 1C in the 2.0–4.5 V window and maintaining a high reversible capacity of 78.5 mAh g −1 at 20C. This work not only provides a solution to the dual high-/low-voltage degradation challenge in P2-type TMOs but also elucidates the underlying mechanism of multi-element co-doping, offering a strategy for designing high-energy-density, long-life sodium-ion battery cathodes.

The substitution of NaMgH3 for MgH2 greatly enhancing the hydrogen storage performance and mechanism of Li-Mg-N-H system

Chia-Tse Lee,Haoyuan Zheng,Chen Jin,Hang Che,Li Wang,Yuyuan Zhao,Shixuan He,Xinhua Wang,Yifeng Yu,Mi Yan

Metal nitrogen hydride (Li-Mg-N-H) is regarded as an ideal hydrogen storage material for automotive applications due to its advantages of high hydrogen storage capacity (5.6 wt%), low operating temperature, and good cycling performance, but the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of this material still could be improved. For this reason, this paper constructed a Li-Na-Mg-N-H composite system by synthesizing NaMgH 3 to replace MgH 2 in the Li-Mg-N-H system. The improvement of the hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of the composite system after the replacement of MgH 2 by NaMgH 3 was investigated. Various properties and test results showed that the composite system after the replacement of MgH 2 by NaMgH 3 showed better hydrogen absorption and desorption properties. The initial/peak hydrogen release temperatures of Li-Na-Mg-N-H decreased from 135 ˚C/245 ˚C to 105 ˚C/145 ˚C, and the apparent activation energy of hydrogen release was reduced from 114.90 to 104.05 kJ/mol which means the kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption was greatly improved. The mechanism study shows that NaMgH 3 will react with LiNH 2 and forms the intermediate product Li 3 Na(NH 2 ) 4 during the hydrogen release process, which changes the hydrogen desorption pathway of the composite system and thus the hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics were improved.

Investigation of coherent interface on relaxation behavior and reliability of Mg-doped BaTiO3 dielectric ceramics: Experiments and first-principle calculations

Zhourui Zhang,Xiong Huang,Jun Yang,Jianwei Zhao,Zhenxiao Fu,Xiuhua Cao,Lei Zhang,Shuhui Yu,Rong Sun

The addition of Mg generally enhances the high-temperature stability and reliability of BaTiO 3 -based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Herein, a series of Mg-doped BaTiO 3 -based ceramics and ultra-thin MLCCs were successfully fabricated, and the coherent and semi-coherent interface has been observed in samples. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement in temperature stability is due to changes in the coherent interface and electronic structure that promote the formation of polar nano-regions (PNRs) and induce relaxation behavior. Based on the atomic displacement, it is found that the excess substitution released the coherent stresses in the form of defects and formed semi-coherent interfaces. The reliability degradation of MLCCs is mainly due to the evolution of the semi-coherent interfaces. This work points out an avenue to obtain high-temperature stability and high reliability in BaTiO 3 -based MLCCs.

Synergistic charge-size trimetallic design PVDF@Mn-co/Al-LDH for efficient lithium selectivity from high-Mg/Li ratio brine

Sehria Zia,Muhammad Kashif,Haojie Ge,Yafei Guo,Tianlong Deng

Mn-Co/Al-LDH enables efficient lithium capturing from Salt Lake Brines. • Fiber adsorbent exhibits excellent Li + selectivity, mechanical stability and durability. • PVDF@Mn-Co/Al-LDH design as fiber functionalization via wet spinning. • Dynamic uptake capacity of Li + 14.94 ± 1.23 mg·g −1 from Da-Qaidam Salt Lake. Lithium‑aluminum layered double hydroxides (LiAl-LDH) have been successfully used on a commercial scale to extract lithium from salt lake brine, their uncertain extraction procedure and inadequate Li + adsorption ability prevent further development of their uses. High selectivity of Li + has been achieved by the LDHs adsorption from high Mg/Li ratio salt lake brine, but zinc and titanium-based LDH adsorbents are unstable in acidic environments and pose environmental hazards. In this study, a novel trimetallic-based PVDF@Mn-Co/Al-LDH fibrous composite material with tunable properties is compared to bimetallic-LDHs. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is used to optimize the composite design and adsorption sites calculations. To approach the industrial application of Mn-Co/Al-LDH powder, it was further fabricated into porous nature fiber by wet spinning technology with cost effective PVDF form as strong binder with hydrophilicity exhibited Li + maximum adsorption capacity by 50% Mn-Co/Al-LDH fiber composition of 16.73 ± 1.02 mg.g −1 from Li + brine and the dynamic adsorption capacity is 14.94 ± 1.23 mg·g −1 with a 93% elution rate and 4–5% dissolution rate of Mn/Co ions. This synthetic fibrous composite adsorbent highlights a promising approach for evaluating LDH's potential in lithium extraction from rich‑lithium high Mg/Li ratio brine resources, due to its superior selectivity, adsorption/desorption performance and cyclic stability. Injectable Double-Cross-Linked Hydrogel Enhanced by Mg/Mn-Based Nanozymes for Photothermal Therapy and Immunomodulation in Periodontal Bone Resorption

Yuhao Yuan,Linya Zeng,Lun Yuan,Qingsu Cheng,Yibo Chen,Panyu Li,Liming Ge,Yandong Mu,Changdao Mu,Zhilang Xu,Defu Li

The repair of irregular periodontal bone defects remains a formidable clinical challenge due to the complex oral microenvironment, which demands that therapeutic materials integrate early antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects with sustained osteogenic support. Herein, we present an injectable multifunctional double-cross-linked hydrogel (GGCM) based on gelatin and chondroitin sulfate (CS), incorporating Mg/Mn-based nanozymes (MPM NZs) for photothermal therapy of periodontitis. MPM NZs were first synthesized via chemical deposition of nano-MnO2 onto mesoporous MgO nanoparticles and subsequently incorporated into a dual-cross-linked network formed by glycidyl methacrylate-modified gelatin and oxidized chondroitin sulfate (OCS) through sequential Schiff base and photopolymerization reactions. The resulting GGCM hydrogel exhibited a favorable microporous architecture, robust physicochemical properties, and excellent injectability to fill irregular periodontal pockets. Notably, MPM NZs endowed the hydrogel with potent photothermal antibacterial activity (>95%), superoxide dismutase (SOD)- and catalase (CAT)-mimetic activities for reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and the sustained release of bioactive Mg2+ and Mn2+ ions for immunomodulation and osteogenesis. Importantly, GGCM enables a time-sequential regenerative therapeutic cascade comprising rapid periodontal pathogen elimination upon NIR irradiation, subsequent anti-inflammatory immunomodulation via M2 macrophage polarization, and continuous osteogenic promotion and alveolar bone resorption reduction. Collectively, this multifunction-integrated MPM NZ-enhanced double-cross-linked hydrogel exhibits promising potential for periodontal bone regeneration, positioning it as a highly attractive photothermal therapeutic strategy for periodontitis and even other complex infectious bone defects.

Preparation of TA@Mg(OH)2/TPU Nanofiber Film and Its Composite Yarns with Flame Retardancy, Antibacterial and Mechanical Improvement

Zhang Shuo,Guo Mengyao,Wu Jiaqing,Wang Ying,Zhang Xin

A novel spinning method that integrates electrospun nanofiber strips into yarn structures has been developed to produce multifunctional yarns. The resulting yarn exhibited a core-sheath structure, with a core composed of tannic acid-modified magnesium hydroxide/thermoplastic polyurethane (TA@MH/TPU) nanofiber strip, sheathed by either pure cotton or cotton/sodium alginate blended fibers. The TA modification improved the dispersion of MH within the TPU matrix, leading to enhanced membrane strength compared to unmodified MH/TPU at equal loadings. The film containing 7% TA@MH/TPU demonstrated optimal mechanical properties (breaking strength of 1.43 MPa, elongation of 122.93%), flame retardancy (limiting oxygen index of 27.1%), and antibacterial efficacy killing ratios of 80.87% against E. coli and 85.07% against S. aureus . Yarns fabricated with this film, the TA@MH/TPU-cotton (CMSCY) retained the antibacterial functionality (67.48% against E. coli and 79.05% against S. aureus ), and the TA@MH/TPU-cotton/sodium alginate (C/SAMSCY) achieved the flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index of 27.8%. Notably, the CMSCY yarn showed a high tensile strength of 1.53 MPa, which was 15 times that of the TA@MH/TPU nanofiber film, addressing the application limitations of nanofiber membranes caused by their low mechanical strength. Given that electrospun membranes can be readily functionalized, this spinning method offers a promising strategy for producing composite yarns, particularly for developing multifunctional textile fabrics.
