Co-MOF-74 derived Co3O4/graphene heterojunction nanoscrolls for ppb-level acetone detection

Ya Xiong,Xiao Chang,Xurong Qiao,Kun Li,Lei Zhu,Fujun Xia,Xiaofang Li,Qingbin Zheng,Wei Xing,Qingzhong Xue

For the first time, Co-MOF-74 derived Co 3 O 4 /graphene heterojunction nanoscrolls (Co 3 O 4 /GNS) structure is synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal strategy and subsequent calcination process. Theoretically, the growth mechanism of Co 3 O 4 /GNS is revealed by molecular dynamic simulation, demonstrating that a high loading of Co-MOF-74 nanoparticles is needed for effective rolling of GO. The sensor based on Co 3 O 4 /GNS exhibits high response of 58.1 (34-fold enhancement compared with that of Co 3 O 4 ), short response/recovery time of 12 s/66 s (157 s/200 s for Co 3 O 4 ) toward 1 ppm acetone at 190 °C and superior selectivity, which are much better than those of most reported acetone sensors. Moreover, the Co 3 O 4 /GNS can even detect as low as 50 ppb acetone with a notable response (1.24). The appreciable response together with rapid response/recovery of Co 3 O 4 /GNS is attributed to the large heterojunction interface between Co 3 O 4 and graphene nanoscroll and high-speed gas transfer pathways provided by nanoscroll. This unique structure design is believed to offer guidance for generalizable synthesis of metal oxide/GNS that can be effectively applied in the fields of ppb-level gas detection.

Determination of Malachite Green in Fish by a Modified MOF-Based Electrochemical Sensor

Zhou Yanli,Li Xiaoqiao,Pan Zhonghao,Ye Baoxian,Xu Maotian

Cu-based metal-organic frameworks modified by silver (Ag/Cu-MOFs) were in situ fabricated through a one-step direct synthesis. The as-prepared mixed-node MOFs were modified on glassy carbon (GC) electrode, which was utilized as a voltammetric sensor for probing malachite green. Compared with the bare GC electrode, the introduced Ag/Cu-MOF film on the electrode surface dramatically improved the sensitivity of the sensor response according to the accumulation and catalytic activity of Ag/Cu-MOFs for malachite green. The developed electrochemical sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 2.2 nM with a wide linear range of 10–140 nM and high anti-interference ability. The feasibility of the assay was verified by test of malachite green in fish sample. The proposed strategy presents valuable information for the evaluation of the food safety in aquaculture industry.

Ce(III, IV)-MOF electrocatalyst as signal-amplifying tag for sensitive electrochemical aptasensing

Hua Yu,Jing Han,Shangjie An,Gang Xie,Sanping Chen

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as a new class of porous materials have attracted increasing attention in the field of biomimetic catalysis . This study firstly reports a mixed valence state Ce-MOF possessing intrinsic catalytic activity towards thionine (Thi), and its application in constructing an amplified electrochemical aptasensor for thrombin detection. As noticed, the novel catalytic process combines the advantages of 3D infinite extension of the Ce(III, IV)-MOF skeleton containing large amounts of catalytic sites and spontaneous recycling of the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) for electrochemical reduction of Thi, thereby presenting amplified electrochemical signals. To further improve the aptasensor performance, the high selectivity of proximity binding-induced DNA strand displacement and high efficiency of exonuclease III-assisted recycling amplification were incorporated into the assay. The aptasensor was employed to detect thrombin in complex serum samples, which shows high sensitivity, specificity, stability and reproducibility. This work offers an opportunity to develop MOF-based electrocatalyst as signal-amplifying tag for versatile bioassays and catalytic applications.

Highly Adsorptive Separation of Ethane/Ethylene by An Ethane-Selective MOF MIL-142A

Yongwei Chen,Houxiao Wu,Daofei Lv,Renfeng Shi,Yang Chen,Qibin Xia,Zhong Li

In the petrochemical industry, ethane/ethylene (C2H6/C2H4) separation is one of the most important processes. Herein, we reported an iron-based metal–organic framework MIL-142A for efficiently trapping C2H6 from C2H6/C2H4 mixture, exhibiting preferential adsorption of C2H6 over C2H4. After various characterization techniques to confirm the successful preparation of MIL-142A, the C2H6 and C2H4 adsorptive separation performance was systematically investigated. Results showed that MIL-142A had remarkably higher C2H6 adsorption capacities than that of C2H4 at 298, 288, and 278 K, such as C2H6 and C2H4 adsorption capacities of 3.8 and 2.9 mmol/g at 298 K and 100 kPa, respectively. In addition, the C2H6 and C2H4 adsorption heats were relatively low and in the corresponding ranges 27.3–25.1 and 26.2–23.8 kJ/mol, which is a favorable property for the regeneration of MIL-142A with less energy penalty. Furthermore, it was inferred that the difference between the adsorption heat for C2H6 and C2H4 with the MIL-142A framework governed the selective adsorption of C2H6 over C2H4. The ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity of C2H6/C2H4 was high up to 5.8 in the initial low pressure and then decreased to 1.5 at 298 K and 100 kPa. Besides, breakthrough experiments also corroborated its efficient separation of C2H6/C2H4 mixture. Additionally, MIL-142A had excellent moisture stability, and its framework remained still intact after being exposed to humid conditions (80% RH) for 15 days. These comprehensive properties demonstrated that this unique material MIL-142A, as a high-performance C2H6-selective adsorbent, can be potentially used for highly adsorptive separation of the C2H6/C2H4 mixture.

Fabrication of mixed-matrix membranes with MOF-derived porous carbon for CO2 separation

Weixin Zhang,Dahuan Liu,Xiangyu Guo,Hongliang Huang,Chongli Zhong

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have shown great advantages but still face some challenges, such as the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, stability, and the lack of efficient ways to enhance them simultaneously. Here, the fabrication of MMMs with metal-organic frameworks derived porous carbons (MOF-PCs) as fillers which exhibit selective-facilitating CO 2 transport passage originating from interactions between fillers and CO 2 is showed. With the aid of the developed multicalcination method, MOF-PCs with variable N-contents were prepared and incorporated into PPO-PEG matrix for the first time to prepare MMMs, which show excellent separation performance for CO 2 /CH 4 mixture with a tunable separation performance by combining different N-contents and surface areas of MOF-PCs. Moreover, the developed MMMs have hydrothermal and chemical stability. This work not only presents a series of MMMs with both good separation properties and stability, it also provides useful information for guiding the fabrication of high performance MMMs for practical application. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 64: 3400–3409, 2018

Xian Wang,Lulu Chai,Junyang Ding,Li Zhong,Yujing Du,Ting-Ting Li,Yue Hu,Jinjie Qian,Shaoming Huang

Environmentally friendly and efficient transition metal phosphide (TMP) electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are developed to meet the growing demand for clean energy. Here we report a novel and environmentally friendly strategy for the preparation of MOF-derived bimetallic phosphide embedded in the carbonaceous matrix ( FeNiP/C ). With 3-dimensional hollow barrel shape and high specific surface, FeNiP/C-900 performs excellent OER catalytic performance, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 229 mV with a low Tafel slope of 74.5 mV dec −1 . Meantime, we explore the thermal conversion mechanism of P-containing MOF and the compositional changes during heat treatment.

Upgrading of palmitic acid over MOF catalysts in supercritical fluid of n-hexane

Xiao Fang,Yanchun Shi,Kejing Wu,Junmei Liang,Yulong Wu,Mingde Yang

The addition of phosphotungstic acid (PTA) to the synthesis mixture of PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 yields the direct encapsulation of PTA inside the MOF structure (i.e. PTA@PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5) through a facile solvothermal approach. The deoxygenation reaction of palmitic acid has been investigated over PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 and PTA@PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 under a hydrogen atmosphere in the supercritical fluid (SCF) of n-hexane. The results showed that palmitic acid can be converted completely at 240 °C on PTA@PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 with a high selectivity of hexadecane. Owning to the improvement of acidity of the MOF catalyst by the encapsulation of PTA inside the hollow octahedral nanostructures of PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5, the selectivity for hexadecane over the PTA@PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 catalyst is higher than that over PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5. The excellent performance in the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of palmitic acid is associated with the synergistic effect between yolk–shell PTA@PdCu@FeIII–MOF-5 nanostructures and SCF medium.

Confinement-Induced Biocatalytic Activity Enhancement of Light- and Thermoresponsive Polymer@Enzyme@MOF Composites

Rubina Jabeen,Muhammad Ali Tajwar,Changyan Cao,Yutong Liu,Shidi Zhang,Nasir Ali,Li Qi

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are favorable hosting materials for fixing enzymes to construct enzyme@MOF composites and to expand the applications of biocatalysts. However, the rigid structure of MOFs without tunable hollow voids and a confinement effect often limits their catalytic activities. Taking advantage of the smart soft polymers to overcome the limitation, herein, a protection protocol to encapsulate the enzyme in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was developed using a glutathione-sensitive liposome (L) as a soft template. Glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were first anchored on a light- and thermoresponsive porous poly(styrene-maleic anhydride-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-spiropyran) membrane (PSMDSP) to produce PSMDSP@GOx-HRP, which could provide a confinement effect by switching the UV irradiation or varying the temperature. Afterward, embedding PSMDSP@GOx-HRP in L and encapsulating PSMDSP@GOx-HRP@L into hollow ZIF-8 (HZIF-8) to form PSMDSP@GOx-HRP@HZIF-8 composites were performed, which proceeded during the crystallization of the framework following the removal of L by adding glutathione. Impressively, the biocatalytic activity of the composites was 4.45-fold higher than that of the free enzyme under UV irradiation at 47 °C, which could benefit from the confinement effect of PSMDSP and the conformational freedom of the enzyme in HZIF-8. The proposed composites contributed to the protection of the enzyme against harsh conditions and exhibited superior stability. Furthermore, a colorimetric assay based on the composites for the detection of serum glucose was established with a linearity range of 0.05–5.0 mM, and the calculated LOD value was 0.001 mM in a cascade reaction system. This work provides a universal design idea and a versatile technique to immobilize enzymes on soft polymer membranes that can be encapsulated in porous rigid MOF-hosts. It also holds potential for the development of smart polymer@enzyme@HMOFs biocatalysts with a tunable confinement effect and high catalytic performance.

Bimetallic NiCu catalyst derived from spent MOF adsorbent for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Longyun Zhang,Ganghua Zhou,Gaoran Chen,Heming Wang,Qian Zhao,Weiqin Yin,Jianjian Yi,Xingwang Zhu,Xiaozhi Wang,Xin Ning

The metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) rich in porous structures and their derivatives have been widely developed and applied to heavy metal adsorption. However, little attention has been paid to the subsequent treatment and reutilization of spent MOFs adsorbents. A potential feasible strategy is to develop MOFs-derived bimetallic catalysts for energy conversion. Herein, a bimetallic Ni-Cu 2 O-Cu/C nanocomposite (Ni-Cu/C) derived from spent Cu-based MOFs (CuBTC) adsorbents was fabricated and applied to improve the performance of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The results demonstrate that Ni doping could improve the charge transfer dynamics. The synthesized Ni-Cu/C catalyst exhibits a high CO yield (12.45 μmol g −1 h −1 ) in the pure water system in the absence of other photosensitizers and sacrificial agents, which is 2.05 folds higher compared to Cu/C. The CO 2 conversion selectivity of the synthesized Ni-Cu/C catalyst reaches up to 99.0%. The mechanism of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction was further investigated by in-situ experiments and density functional theory calculation. The in-situ FT-IR characterization show that photogenerated electrons could effectively adsorb CO 2 to produce CO 2 − and optimize *CO immediate. This work not only emphasizes the unique design of bimetallic catalyst derived from spent MOFs adsorbent, but also contributes a feasible solution to its reutilization for enhanced CO 2 conversion.

Co/Cd-MOF-Derived Porous Carbon Materials for Moxifloxacin Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

Fuhua Wei,Xue Gong,Qinhui Ren,Hongliang Chen,Yutao Zhang,Zhao Liang

In this study, Co/Cd-MOFs were synthesized via a solvothermal method. The resulting material was subjected to calcination at 900 °C for 2 h and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, and SEM techniques to assess its efficacy in moxifloxacin removal. The experimental findings revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Co/Cd-MOFs for moxifloxacin was observed at 350.4 mg/g within a 5 h timeframe. Furthermore, the analysis based on the pseudo-second-order kinetic model demonstrated that the adsorption process adhered to this specific model. Additionally, the adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that Freundlich multilayer adsorption provided the best description of the interaction between moxifloxacin and the Co/Cd-MOF material. These experimental and theoretical results collectively suggest that employing Co/Cd-MOFs as adsorbents holds promise for wastewater treatment applications.

Cobalt MOF-hybridized nanozyme catalysts breaking pH limitations for boosted chlorpyrifos sensing performance

Ruiqi Zou,Junxiao Shi,Qi Lu,Chunyan Sun,Haiqing Ye,Xu Yan,Fangjie Tian,Hongxia Li

Given the potential dangers of organophosphorus pesticides to food safety and human health, the development of a reliable and precise detection platform for pesticides is essential. In this study, we present a novel ‘armor-plating’ laccase-mimetic catalyst (DNA-Cu@MOFs)-based colorimetric platform, which enables stable and selective pesticide detection. The DNA-Cu@MOFs enhance catalytic stability and overcome pH limitations, enabling effective catalysis under neutral and alkaline physiological conditions, making them well-suited for practical applications in biosensor development. By combining the catalytic properties of DNA-Cu@MOFs with a high-affinity biorecognition element (acetylcholinesterase), the platform achieves a linear detection range of 3.0–90 ng mL −1 for chlorpyrifos, with a detection limit of 0.75 ng mL −1 . Notably, this platform demonstrates significant stability in chlorpyrifos detection even in the presence of environmental interferents. This robust colorimetric platform offers new possibilities for pesticide detection and provides a solid foundation for the development of comprehensive and accurate pesticide monitoring systems.
