Herein, the ternary composites, ultrasmall metal nanoparticles encapsulated in the anionic metal-organic frameworks/electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (MNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO, M = Ag, Cu) are constructed by a cationic exchange strategy and an electrochemical reduction process for the electrochemical determination of H 2 O 2 . Both AgNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO and CuNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO display excellent electrocatalytic activity toward H 2 O 2 , but the former is superior to the latter. Such a difference in electrocatalytic activity can be explained by the characterization measurements, and the results manifest MNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO (M = Ag, Cu) electrocatalysts have subequal MNPs sizes and electrochemical surface areas, but different electron transfer rate constants. The AgNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO sensor shows a linear detection range from 4 to 11,000 μM with the detection limit of 0.18 μM. Moreover, MNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO (M = Ag, Cu) exhibit excellent anti-interference performance and can be used for the detection of H 2 O 2 released from living cells. The proposed sensor takes full advantage of the catalytic property of MNPs, the size selectivity of Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF, and the fast electron transport effect of ERGO. Thus, the MNPs@Y-1, 4-NDC-MOF/ERGO/GCE (M = Ag, Cu) can be utilized to detect oxidase activities by monitoring H 2 O 2 produced in the presence of substrate and oxidase, and it is expected that composites with the molecular sieving effect and catalytic activity can be widely applied for catalysis, biomedicine , and biosensing fields.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme-based absorption technology for CO2 capture has been intensively investigated. The main issue related to this novel technology is the activity and stability of the CA enzyme under the typical flue gas conditions. To address this issue, CA enzymes were embedded into zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) nanoparticles to synthesize a novel CA/ZIF-L-1 composite. The composite exhibited a superior apparent catalytic activity (1.5 times higher) for CO2 absorption compared with their free counterparts, which was due to the synergistic enhancement of CO2 adsorption by support ZIF-L and enzymatic catalysis. The analyses of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism revealed that the CA enzyme’s secondary structure was not significantly varied during the CA/ZIF-L-1 preparation, resulting in a high enzyme activity retention. Moreover, the CA/ZIF-L-1 possessed a high thermal stability and reusability due to the structural rigidity and confinement of ZIF-L scaffolds. Compared with the free enzyme, its thermal stability was improved by approximately 100% at 40 °C. After six cycles of reuse, CA/ZIF-L-1 still retained a relative activity of 134%. Therefore, the CA/ZIF-L-1 can be a good candidate to promote the CO2 capture in industrial application.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) UiO-66 and its amine derivative (UiO-66-NH 2 ) with high surface area and unprecedented chemical stability were synthesized and first explored for U(VI) capture from aqueous solutions. At pH 5.5, U(VI) sorption reach equilibrium in ca. 4 h and the maximum sorption capacity is more than 100 mg g −1 . Moreover, they show desirable selectivity towards U(VI) over a range of competing metal ions. Sorption results demonstrate that introduction of amino groups into MOFs does not enhance U(VI) sorption, probably result from the lower activity of aromatic amines, decrease of surface area and formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

As a nanoscale carbon material, carbon spheres (CS) are expected to achieve ideal lubrication performance by reducing direct contact between friction pairs and bearing loads. In this work, 2D Cu-MOFs surface modified (CS@Cu(BDC)) CS was added to the base oil, which exhibited a remarkable reduction in friction coefficient and wear rate (62.2%, 33.9%), the width of the friction pair wear marks was decreased by 30.8% relative to the base oil. The improvement in performance can be attributed to the polishing, repairing, filling and tribo-film forming effects of CS@Cu(BDC). This work provided an effective strategy for diversifying the surface structure of CS and opened new avenues for the development of a new generation of green and efficient lubricant additives .

Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) removal from wastewater has drawn much attention recently, although it still remains challenging. Herein, Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporated nanofibrous membranes were prepared by green electrospinning and applied as adsorbents to remove TCH. The presence of MOFs noticeably improved specific surface area of the nanofibrous membranes, and adsorption capability increased with the amount of MOFs within membranes. As the temperature increased, the amount of TCH that was adsorbed continuously reduced, and the maximum adsorption capacity (248.5 mg/g) was attained at 273 K. The adsorption behavior of the nanofibrous membranes followed Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. A series of interactions between the membrane and TCH, such as pore filling, coordination bonding, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction and electrostatic interaction, combined to enhance the adsorption performance. Good stability and adsorption capability were demonstrated by the nanofibrous membranes, suggesting that they could be used for effective and affordable water purification.

The hollow filler has been verified to effectively enhance the CO 2 permeability of mixed matrix membrane (MMMs) by constructing low-resistance transport pathway. However, the in-continuity of hollow fillers across the membrane results in insufficient CO 2 permeability. In this work, the micron-sized hollow ZIF-8 (Mic-H-ZIF-8) were designed and proposed to accumulate continuously across the membrane to construct the transport highway for CO 2 . Importantly, the in-situ polymerization was utilized to achieve continuous accumulation of the Mic-H-ZIF-8 fillers across the membrane. The Mic-H-ZIF-8 presents cavity size of 4 μm and shell thickness of 100 nm, and three or four Mic-H-ZIF-8 microspheres are aligned sequentially across the membrane, in which the effective gas transport distance is decreased from 13 μm to the range of 0.8–3 μm. Consequently, the CO 2 permeability of 5 wt% Mic-H-ZIF-8/PEO MMM is 224.6 % and 63.5 % higher than those of pure PEO membrane and nanosized hollow ZIF-8/PEO MMM at 0.1 MPa. Meanwhile, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity is still as high as 70.0. This CO 2 separation performance is far exceeding the Robeson upper bound in 2008, and beyond the McKeown upper bound in 2019 as the feed pressure increasing, confirming the significance of continuous transport highway constructed by micron-sized hollow MOFs on improving CO 2 separation of MMMs.

Abnormal amount of dopamine (DA) in human body is closely relate to various diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, pheochromocytoma. Real-time monitoring DA is crucial for disease warning, diagnosis and treatment. Currently, most methods rely on invasive blood testing for detecting DA, which is only completed with the aid of the medical staffs in hospitals. Herein, a non-invasive fluorescence visual strategy is developed for the real-time monitoring DA, based on luminescent nanoparticles and modified mesoporous zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8-NH 2 ) dodecahedrons. During the reaction process, DA is enriched through the spatial configuration of ZIF-8-NH 2 and hydrogen bonding effect. The luminescence of Cr 3+ -doped zinc gallate (ZnGa 2 O 4 :Cr 3+ , ZGC) is inhibited by the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism to realize sensitively detecting DA. The intelligent sensing platform based on the designed fluorescence probe and color recognition system is structured for real-time detection of DA in urine. Furthermore, a skin-fitting hydrogel patch is prepared by combining a fluorescent probe with chitosan, which enables sensitive and accurate detection of DA in sweat without the complex sample pretreatment. The non-invasive fluorescence detection method provides an effective strategy for quantitatively monitoring DA in human fluids.

There are tremendous potential in utilizing metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for enhancing the removal of organic dyes from wastewater. However, the recovery of powdered catalysts poses a significant challenge. In this study, four different iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were synthesized by growing them in situ on carboxylated cotton fabrics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to conduct a comprehensive characterization of the Fe-MOFs. The dye removal rate of Fe-MOF@Cotton was meticulously determined by comprehensively investigating various factors including the concentration of the dye and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the pH value of the solution, and the temperature. Extensive catalytic degradation experiments were conducted to assess the performance of Fe-MOF@Cotton. The results vividly demonstrated that Rhodamine B (RhB) was photocatalytically degraded by Fe-MOF@Cotton with remarkable efficiency in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Notably, the four MOF fabric composites were capable of degrading over 97% of RhB with a concentration of 20 mg/L. Moreover, these composites exhibited excellent reusability, strongly indicating their significant potential for application in the dye wastewater treatment industry. This not only highlights the effectiveness of Fe-MOF@Cotton in dye removal but also offers a promising avenue for addressing the challenges associated with dye-contaminated wastewater treatment.

Defective MOFs have been identified as promising candidates for efficient membrane-based separation applications. However, the utilization of defective MOFs in membrane gas separation is still in its infancy due primarily to the inefficient molecular differentiation induced by structural defects. Herein, we report a strategic combination of ionic liquid (IL) and defective UiO-66-NH2 MOF to ameliorate the CO2/N2 selectivity within the highly permeable PIM-1 polymer. Characterizations and analysis have shown that postmodification of defective UiO-66-NH2 with IL greatly improved its dispersion and compatibility within PIM-1. Meanwhile, the CO2-philic nature of IL facilitated increased adsorption of CO2 molecules, enabling them to pass rapidly through the transport channels in defective MOF. As a result, the optimal membranes demonstrated a concurrent enhancement in both the CO2 permeability and the CO2/N2 ideal selectivity, which were 197.1% and 24.9% greater than those of PIM-1, respectively. Additionally, the complex Lewis acid/base and hydrogen bonding interactions among IL/defective MOF/PIM-1 have ensured that the resulting membranes possess long-term operational durability and significant antiaging behavior. This deliberate matching between IL and defective MOFs has well circumvented the potential limitation of defective MOFs for carbon capture, with potential applications in other areas.

Membrane fouling is one of the major challenges limiting the application of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in various separation processes. To address this issue, we incorporated the photocatalyst NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88B) into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix, creating a novel photocatalytic MMMs that can effectively degrade organic pollutants under light irradiation. This innovative approach endows the membrane with both enhanced permeability and separation selectivity, which is attributed to the hydrophilic groups of the photocatalyst, as well as significant photo-Fenton catalytic capability. The NM88B/PVDF membrane exhibits high permeability (546.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) and excellent catalytic degradation of dyes (over 99 %) and antibiotics (over 90 %) due to the synergistic effects of membrane separation and the photo-Fenton process. After ten cycles of self-cleaning tests, the membrane maintained superior antifouling capacity and degradation performance. This study advances the development of MMMs by addressing the persistent issue of membrane fouling while enhancing pollutant removal efficiency.

Oral biofilm is associated with various oral diseases causing pain and discomfort, and poses a severe threat to general health. Conventional surgical debridement and antibacterial therapy often yield unsatisfactory outcomes because they either fail to fully and painlessly eliminate biofilm or increase the risk of bacterial resistance. In this study, we synthesized polydopamine-embellished Zn-MOFs (ZIF-8@PDA NPs), which can degrade under mildly acidic conditions to release Zn2+. These nanoparticles also convert near-infrared light energy into heat, thereby enabling synergistic photothermal and antibacterial metal ion therapy for oral biofilm eradication. Our findings reveal that therapy with polydopamine-embellished Zn-MOFs, when exposed to near-infrared radiation, demonstrates exceptional antibacterial efficacy and is highly effective in eradicating oral biofilms, both in vitro and ex vivo. Furthermore, we used an in vivo rodent tooth biofilm model to demonstrate the suppression of dental caries. This work presents a promising solution for treating diseases linked to oral biofilm infections, as well as preventing and suppressing dental caries.
