Recently, polymer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their good catalytic activities. However, how to regulate their catalytic activities by changing the polymer chain morphologies or the interactions between the ligands and the analytes through external stimuli is still a great challenge. This study describes a simple synthesis of AuNPs capped by thermo-responsive poly( N,N -dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAM). In comparison with three kinds of PDMAMs@AuNPs, PDMAM-2@AuNPs exhibited better peroxidase-mimic ability via the catalytic oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to generate oxidized TMB (oxTMB). Interestingly, its catalytic activity could be regulated by changing environmental temperature. Importantly, the addition of the antibiotic lomefloxacin endowed the PDMAM-2@AuNPs with enhancement in catalytic efficiency due to electrostatic interactions and the increased levels of reactive oxygen species. Based on this principle, a protocol for highly selective and sensitive monitoring of lomefloxacin has been constructed with the color change from pale blue to deep blue. The ultraviolet–visible absorbance of oxTMB at the wavelength of 650 nm showed a good linear relationship with antibiotic concentration in the range of 0.25–10.0 µM ( R 2 = 0.990). The limit of detection was 0.1 µM. The practical application of the proposed protocol with the promoted peroxidase-mimic activity for the measurement of lomefloxacin in capsules was realized. Cellulose acetate (CA) has attracted much attention in the preparation of ultrafiltration membranes due to its green and sustainable characteristics. However, its poor performance (separation and antifouling performance, etc.) limits the application of CA-based membranes in water treatment. In this work, we prepared a cellulose acetate ultrafiltration membrane with enhanced separation performance by enhancing the dissolution process of CA. The dissolution process of CA was controlled by adjusting the ratio of mixed solvent ( N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and N -methyl pyrrolidone (NMP)), which could tune the phase conversion rate, optimizing the pore structures of the membranes. Compared to the single solvent (M0, M8), the optimal membrane (M4) exhibited a finger-like pore structure and the lowest surface roughness, which was favorable for achieving high water flux. As a result, the M4 possessed a comparable pure water flux (335.8 L·m −2 h −1 ) which was higher than M0 (1.8 times) and M8 (1.7 times), while the BSA rejection rate reached 96.4 %. Besides, the M4 showed a stable separation performance in different operation pressures, BSA concentration, and long-term experiments. This work provided a new method for the preparation of cellulose acetate ultrafiltration membrane with good separation performance and anti-fouling performance and also provides a new way for water treatment.

Autonomous self-healing hydrogels were achieved through a dynamic combination of hydrogen bonding and ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) migration. N,N ′-methylenebis (acrylamide) (MBA), a cross-linking agent, was added in this study. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/Fe 3+ and PAA–MBA/Fe 3+ hydrogels were prepared by introducing Fe 3+ into the PAA hydrogel network. The ionic bonds were formed between Fe 3+ ions and carboxyl groups. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and composition of hydrogels were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The experimental results showed that PAA/Fe 3+ and PAA–MBA/Fe 3+ hydrogels healed themselves without external stimuli. The PAA/Fe 3+ hydrogel exhibited good mechanical properties, i.e., the tensile strength of 50 kPa, the breaking elongation of 750%, and the self-healing efficiency of 82%. Meanwhile, the PAA–MBA/Fe 3+ hydrogel had a tensile strength of 120 kPa. These fabricated hydrogels are biocompatible, which may have promising applications in cartilage tissue engineering.

Stomata in the plant leaves are channels for gas exchange between the plants and the atmosphere. The gas exchange rate can be regulated by adjusting the opening and closing of stoma under the external stimuli, which plays a vital role in plant survival. Under visible light irradiation, the stomata open for gas exchange with the surroundings, while under intense UV light irradiation, the stomata close to prevent the moisture loss of plants from excessive transpiration. Inspired by this stomatal self-protection behavior, we have constructed a bioinspired photo-responsive liquid gating membrane (BPRLGM) through infusing the photo-responsive gating liquid obtained by dissolving the azobenzene-based photo-responsive surfactant molecules (AzoC8F15) in N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) into nylon porous substrate, which can reversibly switch the open/closed states under different photo-stimuli. Theoretical analysis and experimental data have demonstrated that the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene-based surfactant molecules induces a change in surface tension of the photo-responsive gating liquid, which eventually results in the reversible variation of substantial critical pressure for gas through BPRLGM under alternating UV (PCritical(off)) and visible (PCritical(on)) light irradiations. Therefore, driven by a pressure difference ΔPbetweenPCritical(on)andPCritical(off), the reversible switches on the open/closed states of this photo-responsive liquid gating membrane can be realized under photo-stimuli. This bioinspired membrane with switchable open/closed liquid gating performance under photo-stimuli has the opportunity to be used in the precise and contactless control of microfluidics.

Fluorine-containing compounds significantly enrich the diversity of inorganic chemical structures. Here, four alkaline-earth metal difluorophosphates with different space groups, namely NH4Mg(PO2F2)3 (Cmcm) (1), NH4Sr(PO2F2)3 (P) (2), (NH4)2Ba(PO2F2)4 (P2/n) (3) and Ba(PO2F2)2 (I2d) (4), were synthesized and their structures were determined for the first time. 4 is not only the first alkaline-earth-metal difluorophosphate, but also the first difluorophosphate reported to crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric space group I2d of the tetragonal crystal system. All of the three-dimensional (3D) structures of the title compounds consist of isolated (PO2F2)−, AE–O and NH4+ units, while the differences of the cation radius result in various arrangements of the (PO2F2)− units, which leads to diverse crystal structures and the disparate optical anisotropy of the crystals. According to the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) transmittance spectrum, 3 exhibits a short DUV cut off edge (<180 nm). Solid state 19F and 31P magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy was used to verify the presence of covalent P–F bonds in 3. The different size effects, as well as the coordination environments of the Mg2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ cations, on the structures as a whole have been discussed in detail. In addition, the calculated birefringence values were observed to differ from 0.011 to 0.033 for the four compounds.

In situ alkylation or protonation reactions on the thiazolyl-N donors of benzothiazole (btz) and its derivative 2-aminobenzothiazole (abtz) occurred to form four structure directing agents (SDAs), which feature different structure directing abilities and hydrophobicities. The thiazolyl-N alkylated and protonated btz cations direct to form an α-type (AgI2)− iodoargentate chain in (Etbtz)(AgI2) (1), (Prbtz)(AgI2) (2), and (Hbtz)(AgI2) (3), respectively, while the thiazolyl-N protonated abtz cation directs to form a new type of (Ag2I3)− anionic chain in (Habtz)(Ag2I3) (4). Compounds 1 and 4 represent the first noncentrosymmetric (NCS) hybrid iodoargentates with organic S-containing N-heterocycle derivative cations as SDAs. Further, 1 exhibits high water stability and is second harmonic generation (SHG) active with a response about twice that of KDP (KH2PO4). Importantly, the water stability studies indicate that hybrid iodoargentates with hydrophobic N-alkylated SDAs are more stable in water than those with relative hydrophilic N-protonated SDAs.

A unique 3D hierarchical network consisting of 0D carbon dodecahedra and 1D carbon nanotubes is successfully constructed via in-situ growth. • Phosphorus doping serves as a versatile modulator to induce 1D morphology formation and optimize the electronic density of iron active centers. • The optimized N, P co-doped Fe-N-C catalyst exhibits an outstanding half-wave potential of 0.884 V in alkaline media. • The assembled zinc-air battery achieves a remarkable operational lifespan exceeding 1300 h with superior structural integrity. Developing highly efficient and durable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a critical challenge for the practical application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we successfully synthesized a robust N, P-codoped Fe-N-C catalyst featuring a unique 0D/1D intertwined architecture through a phosphorus-induced heteroatom-modulation strategy. By utilizing FePc-encapsulated ZIF-8 as a precursor, the in-situ growth of 1D carbon nanotubes from 0D carbon dodecahedrons was achieved, constructing a 3D hierarchical conductive network. Experimental and mechanistic analyses reveal that P-doping serves as the key morphology director. It not only induces the formation of structural-stable 1D nanotubes to enhance electron transfer but also modulates the electronic density of Fe centers to elevate electro-oxidation resistance. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a superior half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.884 V (vs. RHE) in alkaline media. Remarkably, the as-assembled ZAB achieves an exceptional stability of over 1300 h, demonstrating the superior structural integrity and durability of the 0D/1D network. This research offers a strategic design for engineering high-performance and stable Fe-N-C catalysts through synergistic 0D/1D architecture construction. Phosphorus-induced modulation facilitates the in-situ growth of 1D nanotubes from 0D dodecahedrons, constructing an integrated 0D/1D hierarchical Fe-N-C structure. This structural engineering optimizes the electronic environment of Fe sites for enhanced ORR kinetics (E 1/2 = 0.884 V) and endows practical zinc-air batteries with an outstanding stability exceeding 1300 h. Stage-matched framework reveals fuel-N pathway shifts. • Microwave shifts NH 3 and HCN release to lower temperature regions. • Microwave enriches amines and nitrile precursors in tar at lower temperatures. • Microwave promotes early char deoxygenation and condensation. • Polar O/N activation couples char-N reconstruction with tar-N evolution. Microwave-assisted pyrolysis shows promise for the clean conversion of N-rich biomass, yet its mechanism for regulating nitrogen migration remains unclear. Deashed sewage sludge and protein-derived amino acid models were employed to contrast microwave and conventional pyrolysis. This comparison utilized a reaction-stage-referenced framework based on the characteristic release regions of N-containing gases. Microwave heating did not change the basic nitrogen release pattern, with NH 3 as the dominant product and HCN as the secondary product, but substantially altered the temperature-dependent progression of the fuel-N conversion pathway. Under the present microwave experimental configuration, substantial fuel-N conversion was observed within the measured 190–300 °C range, occurring at lower measured temperatures than under conventional pyrolysis and accompanied by marked changes in O/N-containing structures. Amine intermediates were enriched in tar, and the tar-N fraction increased from about 44% to 87%, driving NH 3 release to lower temperatures. At 300–500 °C, these intermediates further underwent dehydrogenation, cyclization, and nitrilation under microwave effects, forming nitriles and low-carbon mono‑nitrogen compounds and enhancing HCN release around 300 °C. As a result, the characteristic NH 3 and HCN release regions were recorded at lower measured temperatures in the microwave system than in the conventional system. Meanwhile, microwave heating promoted early char deoxygenation and condensation, as reflected by protein-N conversion to pyrrolic-N, pyridinic-N, and nitrile-N, removal of C O and O-C=O groups, reduced interlayer spacing, and enhanced microcrystalline stacking. Tar evolved from heterocyclic and long-chain N-containing compounds toward light aromatics, oxygenated species, and low-carbon nitriles. A three-phase network is proposed wherein tar acts as an intermediate pool connecting char-N reconstruction with NH 3 /HCN release. This study provides mechanistic insights into fuel-N migration during microwave and conventional pyrolysis of N-rich sewage sludge. In this study, a non-noble bimetallic-supported metal oxide catalyst, CuxFe1/ZrO2 rich in oxygen vacancies, was synthesized via dry ball milling for the direct synthesis of N,N′-diphenylurea (DPU) from CO2 and aniline. The optimal Cu5Fe1/ZrO2 catalyst achieved 12.7% aniline conversion with near-100% DPU selectivity (99.9%). Comprehensive characterizations revealed that abundant oxygen vacancies enhance metal–support interaction and serve as primary sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Combined temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2 (CO2/NH3-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies elucidated a synergistic acid–base catalytic mechanism. Lewis basic Cu/Fe sites activate CO2, while Lewis acidic Zr4+ sites adsorb and activate aniline, promoting the formation of the key C6H5NH–(CO) intermediate. The catalyst maintained high performance over five cycles, demonstrating excellent stability. This work offers an effective strategy for designing robust non-noble catalysts for CO2 valorization into value-added chemicals.

Efficient dissolution of cellulose is a critical initial stage in converting it into high value materials. In this study, we developed a rapid pretreatment method based on microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (MW-DES) technology to markedly reduce the dissolution time of dissolving pulp fibers in N -methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO). Specifically, treatment with a ZnCl 2 /H₃PO₄ system under microwave irradiation at 200 W for 4 min effectively disrupted the hydrogen-bond network of cellulose. This treatment increased the specific surface area by 124% and reduced cellulose crystallinity from 64.06% to 44.63%. Owing to the synergistic pretreatment, the complete dissolution time in NMMO decreased to 12 min, a 60% reduction compared to the 30 min required following microwave-water (MW-water) pretreatment, and demonstrated a significant enhancement in dissolution efficiency. This approach provides a novel, sustainable strategy for the efficient pretreatment of dissolving pulp, thereby supporting the industrial production of Lyocell fibers.

The incorporation of sp-hybridized nitrogen arisen from graphdiyne (GDY) into the catalyst structure significantly improves the electrocatalytic efficiency of zinc–air batteries by modulating the electronic properties of the active sites, thereby accelerating reaction kinetics and enhancing conductivity. This work highlights the efficacy of the Co–N-GDY catalyst, where sp-N moieties in GDY serving as anchoring centers for cobalt species, which demonstrates exceptional performance in the oxygen reduction reaction, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.85 V, along with high oxygen evolution reaction performance that surpasses that of commercial Pt/C + IrO2-based batteries. The Co–N-GDY catalyst also exhibits commendable cycling stability with minimal fluctuation in voltage difference, indicating its suitability for practical applications in advanced energy storage systems. These findings underscore the importance of developing cost-effective and durable M–N–C catalysts to enhance the commercial viability and sustainability of zinc–air battery technology.

Transition elements doping metal oxide is of great significance for developing gas sensors with high performance. To achieve this goal, α-Fe 2 O 3 rod and Mn-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 polyhedrons are successfully synthesized by a facile N, N-dimethylformamide assisted hydrothermal method and characterized by several physical techniques. The morphology of α-Fe 2 O 3 is evolved by introducing Mn elements. The performance of the α-Fe 2 O 3 rod and Mn-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 polyhedrons as H 2 gas sensors are studied and compared. The Mn/α-Fe 2 O 3 -5 polyhedrons sensor exhibit the best performance at optimum operating temperature of 300 °C. The response and recovery times are 10 s/24 s for H 2 with a concentration of 200 ppm, which is much faster in contrast to those recently reported H 2 gas sensors. Furthermore, α-Fe 2 O 3 rod and Mn-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 polyhedrons show abnormal n-p transition sensing behavior with the change of operating temperature. This work provides a facile method for synthesizing α-Fe 2 O 3 based sensing materials for various sensors applications.
