Synergistic dealloying and heterojunction construction on Ni-Fe-P ribbons for enhanced oxygen evolution

Yundan Xiao,Yingpeng Gu,Jiajun Shi,Peng Yu,Xiaolong Guo

A synergistic dealloying and heterojunction construction strategy is developed on crystalline Ni–Fe–P ribbons. • The strong heterointerface enables efficient interfacial charge transfer and exposes abundant active sites for OER. • The electronic structure and surface reconstruction of the ribbon are modulated via LDH-induced interfacial coupling. Ni-Fe based ribbons are promising self-supporting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts due to their low cost, good conductivity, and high intrinsic activity. However, pristine ribbons exhibit poor OER performance because their smooth, non-porous surface leads to limited active sites and their sluggish surface reconstruction lowers intrinsic activity. Dealloying can create nanoporous structures, but this single strategy suffers from a trade-off between mechanical integrity and active area, as well as a depth limitation of the porous layer (~500 nm). Herein, we report a synergistic strategy combining mild dealloying pretreatment with in situ growth of NiFe-LDH on Ni-Fe-P ribbons. Moderate dealloying preserves mechanical robustness while providing a nanoporous anchoring layer. Subsequent growth of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets compensates for the limited active area, builds a deep three-dimensional catalytic network beyond the dealloying-limited depth, and forms a strong heterointerface that facilitates charge transfer. The optimized Ni-Fe-P/LDH electrode achieves a low overpotential of 245 mV at 20 mA cm −2 , substantially outperforming the pristine ribbon (353 mV) and the solely dealloyed ribbon (267 mV), and maintains stable operation for over 100 h at 10 mA cm −2 and 50 h at 500 mA cm −2 . This work demonstrates the feasibility of combining dealloying and heterojunction engineering for high-performance self-supporting OER electrocatalysts.

Near-Surface Sulfidation-Induced p-n Junction Enabling High-Efficiency Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Lu Chunyan,Li Mingjin,Li Wen,Deng Haoyun,Jiang Jutao,Wang Pengxi,Yang Biao,Yang Cheng,Li Xiaodong,Hu Ziyang,Zhang Wenjun

Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) often suffer from inefficient electron extraction due to the intrinsically p-type nature of the perovskite surface at the electron transport layer interface. Here, we report a near-surface sulfidation strategy using dibutyl sulfide (DBS) to induce a surface p-to-n transition, which creates a near-surface electric field that facilitates electron extraction and suppresses interfacial recombination. Simultaneously, the formation of Pb-S coordination bonds passivates undercoordinated Pb 2+ defects, reducing nonradiative recombination losses. As a result, DBS-treated inverted PSCs achieve a champion power conversion efficiency of 26.28% with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.191 V. The treated devices also exhibit enhanced thermal stability, retaining 91% of their initial efficiency after more than 700 h of aging at 85 ° C in a N 2 atmosphere. This work presents a simple yet effective surface engineering approach that simultaneously enhances both the efficiency and stability of inverted PSCs.

S,P Co-Doped NiFe-Based MOF-Derived Composite as Bifunctional HER/OER Electrocatalysts

Yuan Guokai,Li Qi,Xue Yuyang,Chen Qixiang,Yu Aijia,Xie Aijuan,Luo Shiping

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable research interest as versatile templating agents for synthesizing transition metal compounds, particularly in electrocatalytic water splitting applications due to their tunable spatial architectures and compositional flexibility. This study investigated the in situ growth of sulfur–phosphorus codoped NiFe-based MOF catalysts on nickel foam (NF) substrates (FeNi 3 –CPS/NF) and their bifunctional activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the FeNi 3 –CPS/NF catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic performance with low overpotentials of 136 mV for HER and 75 mV for OER, and low Tafel slopes of 30.97 (HER) and 8.49 mV dec –1 (OER), respectively. The charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) values reach 2.328 Ω during HER and 2.149 Ω during OER, highlighting efficient electron transfer. The electrochemical active surface areas (ECSA) were determined as 1200 cm 2 for HER and 1425 cm 2 for OER. Stability assessments reveal excellent durability under both HER and OER conditions, with current retention rates of 86.32% and 80.71% respectively after prolonged electrolysis. These findings collectively establish FeNi 3 –CPS/NF as a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst combining high catalytic activity with exceptional stability for overall water splitting applications. The innovative integration of heteroatom doping within the MOF architecture offers new design strategies for advanced energy conversion materials.

Design of Polymerizable N–P Synergistic Vanilloid Acrylates: Controlled RAFT Polymerization and Flame Retardancy

Doudou Li,Xingyu Zhou,Yu Feng,Weiwei He,Lifen Zhang,Zhenping Cheng

The search for innovative and cost-effective flame-retardant polymers is attracting increasing interest in both the academics and industrial community. In this work, flame-retardant polymers with high performance are developed through a monomer-to-polymer strategy. Specifically, biobased N–P synergistic vanillin-based acrylate monomers (MAPDVAs) are designed and synthesized, which are then polymerized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to obtain a biobased polymer, namely, PMAPDVA. The obtained PMAPDVA (Mn,GPC = 39100 g/mol) has a high residual carbon content of about 42.0 wt % at 800 °C. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of PMAPDVA is only 62.0 W/g in a micro calorimeter (MCC) test, confirming excellent flame-retardant efficiency. The PHRR and the total heat release rate (THR) of poly 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) decreased by 33.8% and 42.7%, respectively, when 30.0 mol % MAPDVA was copolymerized. In addition, the copolymer coatings display light transmission more than 80% in the range of 380–780 nm, indicating fine transparency of the copolymer and satisfying compatibility of PMAPDVA. Finally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis infrared (TGA-IR) are applied to explore the flame-retardant mechanism of the resultant polymers. This work provides a key clue for the preparation of flame retardants from natural products.

Resonant level and band splitting boost the thermoelectric performance of p-type polycrystalline SnSe

Chunlu Wu,Xiao-Lei Shi,Meng Li,Wei-Di Liu,Daohao Li,Liangkui Zhu,Pei Yuan,Zhuanghao Zheng,Lina Cheng,Zhi-Gang Chen,Xiangdong Yao

Due to its abundant raw-material resources, high intrinsic Seebeck coefficient, and low intrinsic thermal conductivity, SnSe has emerged as a standout among numerous thermoelectric materials. However, achieving thermoelectric performance in polycrystalline SnSe that approaches the high-performance single-crystal materials remains a challenge. Here, we design high-performance p-type polycrystalline SnSe co-doped with Ge and Ga by validating through first-principles calculations. Ge-doping causes band splitting and reduced bandgap of SnSe, while Ga-doping introduces resonant levels, thereby synergistically enhancing its originally low intrinsic carrier concentration to improve electrical conductivity. Additionally, co-doping introduces intensive point defects and other lattice defects, which strengthen phonon scattering and effectively reduce thermal conductivity. As a result, the ZT value of polycrystalline Sn0.955Ge0.005Ga0.04Se reached 1 at 773 K. The findings highlight the significant importance of rational band engineering in achieving excellent thermoelectric performance and advancing the progress of thermoelectric technology.

P-Fe coupling behavior and mechanistic insights during selective Lithium extraction from spent LiFePO4

Xiaotian Zhang,Lu Xu,Yaohui Yang,Chao Li,Zelin Li,Chengqing Ji,Yaru Cui,Huamei Duan,Mujun Long,Dengfu Chen

In the recycling of spent lithium iron phosphate (SLFP), the purity of lithium carbonate, the primary lithium product, is severely constrained by the co-leaching of impurity elements, particularly phosphorus, which has long been overlooked in conventional selective leaching studies. In this study, a selective lithium extraction strategy was developed in the H 2 SO 4 -H 2 O 2 system by simultaneously targeting high Li recovery and suppression of Fe/P dissolution. Guided by E -pH diagrams and response surface methodology, the optimal leaching domain was identified, achieving 99.52% Li extraction while limiting Fe and P dissolution to 0.04% and 1.36%, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Fe and P are not simply retained in the solid phase as traditionally assumed, but undergo a coupled dissolution-oxidation-reprecipitation process, ultimately forming FePO 4 ·xH 2 O. In contrast, Li leaching follows an interfacial chemical reaction-controlled mechanism ( E a  = 56.49 kJ mol −1 ). The decoupling of these pathways is the fundamental origin of high selectivity. Kilogram-scale experiments further confirmed the process stability and enabled the production of battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 with a purity of 99.74%. Furthermore, the migration of residual fluorine-containing species was evaluated, and corresponding strategies for safety management and emission control were proposed. This study reveals the previously overlooked leaching behavior of phosphorus during selective lithium extraction and clarifies the coupled immobilization mechanism of P Fe, providing a new theoretical basis and technical route for the high-selectivity and scalable recycling of spent LiFePO 4 .

Regulable surface potential of MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) electrospun membranes promotes BMSCs osteogenic differentiation

Na Qiang,Tao Zhu,Lihong Huang,Wenlong Zhang,Peishi Hu,Jiayi Lu,Xuefeng Zhang,Qingyun Tang,Guocong Liu,Qiang Lin,Shuo Tang

Bone tissue engineering requires biomaterials capable of bionically simulating the physiological electro-microenvironment of natural bone to regulate osteogenic cell behavior. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) electroactive nanocomposite membranes with tunable surface potential were successfully fabricated via electrospinning technology. The microstructure, crystal phase composition, thermal stability, piezoelectric performance, and electrical conductivity of the composite membranes were systematically characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy (Raman), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) measurements, and surface resistance tests. XRD, FTIR, and Raman characterizations confirmed that MXene acted as a nucleating agent, which inhibited the formation of the α-phase of P(VDF-TrFE) and promoted the generation of the ferroelectric β-phase. Piezoelectric and electrical property tests demonstrated that MXene doping significantly enhanced the piezoelectric performance and electrical conductivity of the composite membranes. Specifically, the d33 value of the composite membrane with 2.0 wt% MXene reached 5.4 pC/N. Moreover, the surface resistance of MXene-doped membranes was drastically reduced from 230.0 mΩ (for the pure P(VDF-TrFE) membrane) to ∼24–25 mΩ, constructing an efficient charge transport pathway. Consequently, the MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) membranes facilitated cell adhesion, stretching, and proliferation, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. Meanwhile, cells cultured on the composite membranes displayed enhanced spreading and improved cytoskeletal organization. Further osteogenic assessments revealed that MXene-containing substrates effectively promoted osteogenic differentiation at both the early and late stages, as well as enhanced the formation of mineralized extracellular matrix. These findings suggest that MXene incorporation provides a favorable microenvironment for directing the osteogenic differentiation of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMSCs). The fabricated MXene/P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite membranes possess a biomimetic microenvironment with sustainable electric potential and optimal topographical structure, offering an innovative and well-suited strategy for applications in bone regeneration.

Dioscin Reverses Drug Resistance via AKT/GSK3β‐mediated P‐gp Degradation and EMT Inhibition

Keqi Zhang,Jinzhu Zhao,Linlin Li,Zixin Wang,Xinyi Mao,Jie Yan,Shuhua Han,Mingjing He,Bingjie Bi,Qiang Xu,Cong Wang

Tumor drug resistance and metastasis are leading causes of cancer‑related mortality, both of which are tightly governed by multiple signaling pathways. The AKT‑GSK‑3β axis is a critical regulator of tumor progression, mediating drug resistance and epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) through its downstream targets. Aberrantly activated AKT‑GSK‑3β signaling modulates the expression and degradation of the drug efflux pump P‐gp, which expels chemotherapeutic agents, including paclitaxel (PTX), from cancer cells, resulting in chemotherapy failure and drug resistance. Moreover, hyperactivated AKT‑GSK‑3β signaling drives EMT, a key process closely linked to tumor metastasis and malignant progression. Dioscin (Dio), a natural steroidal saponin, exhibits significant anti‑tumor activity in multiple cancers. However, whether Dio reverses chemoresistance and inhibits tumor growth by targeting the AKT‑GSK‑3β pathway to promote P‐gp degradation and suppress EMT remains elusive, which is the central focus of this study. To explore whether Dio enhances the sensitivity of drug‐resistant cancer cells to PTX and inhibits cancer metastasis and the EMT process, as well as its potential mechanism(s). Paclitaxel‐resistant TE‐1/PTX and HeLa/PTX cells were subjected to SRB, colony formation, Rh123 accumulation, wound‐healing, and Transwell assays to evaluate Dio's chemosensitizing, anti‐EMT, and anti‐metastatic effects. Network pharmacology, molecular docking, CETSA, and proteolysis assays verified a direct Dio‐AKT1 interaction. Western blotting, Co‐IP, and MG132 and MK2206 rescue experiments clarified AKT/GSK3β‐dependent P‐gp ubiquitin‐proteasomal degradation and EMT suppression. HeLa/PTX xenograft models were generated; H&E staining and immunoblotting were used to assess tumor growth, biosafety, and intratumoral protein profiles for in vivo validation. Dio sensitized PTX‐resistant cells to paclitaxel, increased intracellular Rh123 accumulation, and inhibited cell migration and invasion. Mechanistically, Dio directly bound AKT1 to suppress AKT/GSK3β signaling, promoted ubiquitin‐proteasomal degradation of P‐gp, and reversed EMT by upregulating epithelial markers and repressing mesenchymal markers and EMT transcription factors. In vivo, Dio restrained xenograft tumor growth with negligible systemic toxicity, and intratumoral expression patterns of AKT/GSK3β, P‐gp, and EMT‐related proteins mirrored in vitro findings. Dio has the potential to be a safe and effective agent for drug‐resistant cancer therapy.

Oxygen-vacancy-linked Co and Zr triadic sites steering C-P cleavage in aminophosphonates

Jinbin Lin,Bo He,Xue Li,Xiaohui Wang,Baoxue Zhou,Pedro J.J. Alvarez,Mingce Long

Selective bond activation in heterogeneous oxidation catalysis remains challenging when multiple competitive pathways coexist. In aminophosphonates, oxidative transformation is typically dominated by kinetically favored C-N cleavage, generating refractory intermediates such as aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Herein, we demonstrated that selective C-P bond activation could be achieved via active-site coordination engineering. A cobalt single-atom catalyst featuring oxygen-vacancy-linked Zr sites (Co-Ov-Zr ensemble) created a dual-anchoring microenvironment that enforces bidentate adsorption of aminotris(methylenephosphonate), elongating the C-P bond and lowering its cleavage barrier. The vacancy-modified electronic structure promoted efficient peroxymonosulfate activation and Co(IV)=O generation. Consequently, the reaction coordinate was reprogrammed, reversing intrinsic selectivity from C-N to C-P cleavage. The optimized Co-Ov-ZrO 2 /PMS system achieved a five-fold enhancement in phosphate release kinetics compared to the vacancy-free analogue while suppressing AMPA formation. This work establishes adsorption-configuration control as a strategy for designing selective single-atom oxidation catalysts.

Solution epitaxy of single-crystal ferroelectric p-i-n structure with ultrahigh photovoltaic response

Huang Zihang,Zhang Zijun,Geng Wan-Rong,Ma Wenbo,Li Yuyang,Zhou Zhanqi,Fu Yi,Zhang Ruian,Sun Yiran,Fang Xuchao,Jiang Xuanyu,Xiong Qin,Lv Xiayi,Du Guanshihan,Li Shangqing,Fang Yanjun,Yang Yang Michael,Huang Yuhui,Ma Xiu-Liang,Wu Yongjun,Liu Kaihui,Hong Zijian,Deng Tianqi,Tian He,Han Gaorong,Ren Zhaohui

Ferroelectric materials with a switchable polarization are appealing for optoelectronic applications because of their above-bandgap photovoltage with a potential to exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit efficiency within classic p-n junctions. However, the intrinsic photovoltaic current in ferroelectrics remains far below the junction ones by orders, hindering their practical applications. Here we report an extremely large photovoltaic current density of 130 mA cm −2 with a photovoltage of 1.31 V under 375 nm light illumination in single-domain lead titanate films. Its photoresponsivity surpasses all available ferroelectric materials by two orders of magnitude. Systematic investigations reveal that an interfacial Ta dopant layer during solution epitaxy drives a polarization converting of the film via the flexoelectric effect, where surface charged Pb vacancy layer was generated for polarization screening. These two layers produce a p-i-n structure throughout the film, accounting for the ultrahigh photovoltaic response. Furthermore, a self-powered X-ray detector made of such film was explored to achieve a sensitivity of 4.73 C Gy air −1 cm −3 , three orders of magnitude higher than that of commercial amorphous Se detectors. Our findings may pave the way for exploring novel detection and imaging devices based on ferroelectric materials.

Enhanced Lethal Effects of Combined P-tert-Butylcatechol and L-Lysine on Microcystis aeruginosa

Heyun Jiao,Gangwei Jiao,Ruitong Jiang,Yifei Shen,Peimin He,Liu Shao

Simple SummaryHarmful algal blooms caused byMicrocystis aeruginosathreaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. This study explores the combined effects of two natural allelochemicals, P-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) and L-lysine, in controllingM. aeruginosa. When combined at low concentrations (0.04 mg/L TBC + 1 mg/L L-lysine), they achieved over 90% growth inhibition within 96 h. The treatment damaged algal cell membranes, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and triggered oxidative stress. Furthermore, intracellular and extracellular microcystin levels decreased significantly compared to untreated algae, minimizing ecological risks. These findings highlight the potential of the combination of TBC and L-lysine as a safe and cost-effective strategy for mitigating harmful algal blooms.Allelochemicals are recognized as promising algaecides due to their environmental safety. Para-tert-butylcatechol (TBC) and L-lysine exhibit significant potential in suppressing harmful algal blooms (HABs); however, their combined effects and algae inhibition mechanisms remain unelucidated. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the growth inhibition ofMicrocystis aeruginosaby TBC and L-lysine individually and in combination, while simultaneously examining their combined effects on algal growth, cell membrane integrity, photosynthetic activity, antioxidant responses, and microcystin production. The results revealed a significant interactive effect between TBC (0.04 mg/L) and L-lysine (1 mg/L), achieving over 90% growth inhibition within 96 h. The combined treatment significantly inhibitedM. aeruginosagrowth through impaired photosynthetic efficiency and elevated oxidative stress. Compared to the control group, the treatment group exhibited a continuous decline in chlorophyll-a content, phycobiliprotein levels,Fv/Fm, YII, α, and rETRmax, while phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity decreased by 96.48% by day 8. And antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH), showed a progressive increase in activity. In addition, the structure and integrity of the cell membrane ofM. aeruginosawere damaged after treatment, and the conductivity of the treatment groups increased continuously from 2.32 to 4.63 μs/cm. In addition, under combined treatment, intra- and extracellular microcystin levels initially increased (peaking at day 2) but sharply declined thereafter, becoming significantly lower than controls by day 8. These findings highlight the potential of combining TBC and L-lysine as an eco-friendly and cost-effective strategy for mitigatingM. aeruginosa-dominated harmful algal blooms.

MoS2/SnS@B, P-doped hollow multi-channel carbon fibers for lithium-ion batteries

Yujie Wang,Panpan Ding,Fan Zhang,Minglei Wang,Anqi Ju

Stannous sulfide (SnS) with a unique two-dimensional layered structure is a potential anode material for advanced lithium-ion batteries due to its large interlayer spacing (4.04 Å) and high theoretical specific capacity (1138 mA h g−1). However, large volume expansion and low conductivity lead to poor cycle performance of SnS. In this work, MoS2 modified SnS@ hollow multichannel carbon fibers (MoS2/SnS@HMCFs) were prepared by an electrospinning technique and a hydrothermal method. The resulting material has a unique hollow structure with a heterojunction formed between SnS and MoS2. It not only mitigates the volume change of SnS in the lithiation/delithiation process but also improves the interfacial transport of Li+ and enhances the structural stability of the electrode materials. MoS2/SnS@HMCFs can maintain a reversible specific capacity of 610.1 mA h g−1 (at 0.5 A g−1) after 500 cycles. On this basis, B and P elements were doped into MoS2/SnS@HMCFs to generate lattice defects and accelerate electron transport and further ameliorate the electrical conductivity (from 5.34 S cm−1 to 9.58 S cm−1). In light of the above advantages, the reversible specific capacity of MoS2/SnS@BP-HMCFs is increased to 854.4 mA h g−1 (0.5 A g−1) after 500 cycles compared with MoS2/SnS@HMCFs. Therefore, an anode with a unique hollow structure, heterogeneous structural framework, and doped heteroatoms was constructed, providing a method for the preparation of anode materials tailored for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
