Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) is recognized as one of the promising materials for catalyst support. However, its practical application is still restricted by the low specific surface area and the relatively low conduction band level. An efficient hydrothermal and room temperature plasma technique was employed to synthesize WO 3 nanoparticles (designated as WO 3 -Ar), resulting in a higher surface area and the creation of substantial oxygen vacancies on the WO 3 surface. Subsequently, Pd and Ag nanoparticles were deposited onto the WO 3 nanoparticles, which are characterized by a high specific surface area and numerous oxygen vacancies, through hydrogen reduction (PdAg/WO 3 -Ar). Electrochemical tests indicate that the PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalysts exhibit superior electrocatalytic efficiency compared to the PdAg/C catalyst. The significantly higher electrocatalytic activity is attributed to several factors: (1) The oxygen vacancy defects and the high unique specific surface area of WO 3 -Ar facilitate the anchoring of Pd–Ag nanoparticles and enhance the electrocatalytic performance of Pd–Ag nanoparticles in PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalysts. (2) A catalyst-support interaction exists between Pd–Ag and WO 3 -Ar, which significantly boosts the catalytic performance of the PdAg/WO 3 -Ar catalyst.

In this study, we have developed a sustainable method for the hydrogenation of quinolines to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines under mild conditions over a nitrogen-doped carbon-supported Pd catalyst with abundant porous structures (abbreviated as Pd/CN). The mesoporous structure of the nitrogen-doped carbon support was prepared by the pyrolysis of glucose and melamine using eutectic salts of KCl and ZnCl2 as the porogen. Due to the high nitrogen content in the support, Pd nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon materials with an ultra-small size of 1.9 nm in a narrow size distribution. The as-prepared Pd/CN catalyst showed high catalytic activity towards the hydrogenation of quinolines at 50 °C and 20 bar H2, affording the corresponding 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines with yields in the range of 86.6–97.8%. More importantly, the Pd/CN catalyst was highly stable without the loss of its catalytic activity during the recycling experiments. The use of renewable resources to prepare the catalyst makes this method promising for the sustainable 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines from the hydrogenation of quinolines.

Hierarchically nanoporous silicon hydrogen compound particles were synthesized by dissolving template method, and the hierarchically nanoporous Pd–HSiO1.5 were further prepared by in-situ synthesis method. The microstructure and morphology of the nanoparticles
were characterized by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the hierarchically nanoporous Pd–HSiO1.5/Ni–Co composite electrode was fabricated by the method of nanocomposite electrodeposition, in which hierarchically nanoporous Pd–HSiO1.5
particles were used as composite nanoparticles on the Ni–Co electroplating bath. The surface morphology was characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Finally, the sensor was used to detect the tetracycline antibiotics with different classes. Results showed that the hierarchically
nanoporous silicon hydrogen compound particles were with hollow spherical structure. The size of the hollow spheres was about 70 nm, and the thickness of the spherical shell was about 10 nm. The Pd nanoparticles were successfully loaded on the inside and surface of the hierarchically nanoporous
silicon hydrogen compound. The size of the inside Pd nanoparticles was about 3 nm, and the size of surface Pd nanoparticles was 10–30 nm. In addition, the SEM image showed that the hierarchically nanoporous Pd–HSiO1.5 particles were uniformly inlaid on the surface of
the hierarchically nanoporous Pd–HSiO1.5/Ni–Co composite electrode. The composite electrode had high electrocatalytic activity and showed high electrochemical sensitivity in the detection of the oxytetracycline and deoxytetracycline in alkaline medium. The obtained detection
limits were 1.0 × 10–8 M and 5.0 × 10–8 M for oxytetracycline and deoxytetracycline, respectively.

To further enhance the electrocatalytic performances of Pd-based electrocatalysts in small organic molecule oxidation reactions, Pd/C was modified by a redox-active organic molecule (9,10-phenanthrenequinone, PQ), resulting in a novel Pd/C-PQ catalyst. The catalyst was prepared by first physically adsorbing PQ onto the surface of Vulcan XC-72 carbon black (C-PQ), followed by the deposition of Pd nanoparticles on this modified C-PQ support. Results demonstrated that the Pd nanoparticles within the Pd/C-PQ catalyst were well-dispersed with a particle size distribution ranging from 2.4 to 4.6 nm. This size was significantly smaller than that of Pd nanoparticles in the unmodified Pd/C catalyst. Electrochemical testing revealed a substantial enhancement in performance. The mass and specific activity for formic acid oxidation achieved by the Pd/C-PQ catalyst were 2.67 and 2.07 times higher than that of the unmodified Pd/C catalyst, respectively. In addition, the CO stripping peak of the Pd/C-PQ catalyst exhibited a negative shift of 26 mV compared to Pd/C, indicating weaker CO adsorption. The remarkably improved stability was also observed for the Pd/C-PQ catalyst. Furthermore, the charge transfer kinetics for the formic acid oxidation reaction were significantly accelerated. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the Pd/C-PQ catalyst can be attributed to several synergistic factors of uniformly dispersed Pd with relatively smaller particle sizes, electronic interaction/modification between Pd and PQ, and the cooperative role of the PQ molecules acting as efficient redox mediators.

The extraction and separation of platinum group metals (PGMs) from HLLW is of great value for resource recycling and the running of reprocessing plants. In this paper, the photochemical method was proposed to extract and separate PGMs (Pd, Ru) from simulated high level liquid wastes (HLLW). Pd and Ru metal were extracted from aqueous solution by photoreduction with high efficiency (reduction ratio >90%) in the presence of alcohols, which was confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy, XRD, XPS and TEM analysis. The effects of various parameters such as exposure wavelength, reducing agents, Cl − and pH value were investigated to optimize the photoreaction. The highly efficient extraction and separation of Pd or/and Ru metal from their mixture with lanthanide (Nd) by selective photoreduction was realized. The results suggest that the photochemical method is a promising method for the efficient extraction and separation of PGMs from HLLW.

Photocatalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) is a promising route to ethylene under mild conditions, yet achieving a high yield and selectivity is challenging due to the inert C–H bonds and overoxidation to CO2. In this study, we present ZnO fine nanoparticles decorated with highly dispersed Pd species and featuring closely associated interfacial oxygen vacancies (Ov) for highly selective ODHE. The optimized catalyst achieves a C2H4 production rate of 8.5 mmol g–1 h–1 with a selectivity of up to 96.1%, surpassing most reported photo- and thermocatalysts and maintaining robust stability for over 10 h. Through a combination of operando DRIFTS, in situ XPS, and in situ EPR analyses, we demonstrate that the enhanced photocatalytic performance stems from a synergistic, spatially separated dual-site configuration involving Pd species and adjacent interfacial Ov. This configuration enhances spatial charge separation, promotes oxygen activation, and facilitates the selective conversion of C2H6 into key *C2H4 intermediates, thereby boosting ethylene formation. This work not only provides fundamental insights into the photocatalytic ODHE mechanism but also underscores the importance of interfacial engineering in the design of highly efficient photocatalysts for alkane conversion.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) suffers from sluggish kinetics and high operational temperatures, hindering practical hydrogen storage. We pioneer a spatially decoupled catalytic strategy that assigns distinct roles to Ti 0 . 10 Zr 0 . 15 V 0 . 35 Cr 0 . 10 Ni 0 . 30 (TA) alloy (bulk diffusion promoter) and Pd/C (surface dissociation catalyst), overcoming the inherent coupling of rate-limiting steps in MgH 2 . This design achieves near-ambient absorption (4.56 wt% at 100 °C) and eliminates activation cycles—a milestone unattained by single-catalyst systems. Kissinger analysis confirms a 46.0% reduction in activation energy (78.8 kJ/mol) for the surface-limited step, directly validating the spatial separation of catalytic functions. Crucially, the composite retains 92.3% capacity after 30 cycles with negligible kinetic degradation (0.40% decay/cycle), eliminating the need for activation. This work establishes a spatially coupled catalytic mechanism that decouples surface and bulk processes, enabling a lower operating temperature for MgH 2 .

Achieving efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction using H 2 O as a hydrogen source requires the synergistic optimization of both charge and proton transfer between CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation half-reactions. However, conventional studies mostly focused on enhancing these half-reactions independently, overlooking the intrinsic interdependence between them. Herein, this work develops a photothermal catalyst (denoted as Pd 1+c /3DOM-In 2 O 3 ) through engineering synergistic Pd single atoms (Pd 1 ) and Pd clusters (Pd c ) in three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) In 2 O 3 framework. The mechanistic study reveals that the coexistence of Pd single atoms and clusters not only offers synergistic active sites to promote the reaction of CO 2 and H 2 O, but also substantially improves the separation and transfer efficiencies of photogenerated electrons and holes. The Pd clusters facilitate H 2 O dissociation to ensure an adequate supply of active hydrogen species as well as synergistically enhance the adsorption and activation of CO 2 at Pd single-atom sites. Furthermore, the enhanced photoabsorption in visible and near-infrared regions, attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance of Pd clusters, leads to a significant increase in catalyst temperature under simulated solar irradiation. The integration of photocatalysis with the photothermal effect affords an intensified driving force for the selective conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O into CO, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics of the overall photocatalytic CO 2 reduction process. As a result, the Pd 1+c /3DOM-In 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits excellent performance for solar-driven CO 2 reduction with H 2 O vapor, achieving a remarkable CO production rate of 192.52 μmol g –1 h –1 , which is 19.8-fold and 12.2-fold higher than those of pure 3DOM-In 2 O 3 and Pd 1 /3DOM-In 2 O 3 , respectively. This study provides valuable insights into the synergistic effect of metal single atoms and clusters toward both efficient photocatalysis and photothermal effect for solar-driven CO 2 reduction.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention due to their high porosity and highly ordered crystalline structure. However, the insoluble and unprocessable features of bulk COF powder limit their applications. To overcome these limitations, COF-TpPa film was prepared based on amine-group functionalized nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) by Schiff base reaction for the first time. The obtained COF-TpPa/NFC membrane had high specific surface area (BET, 357 m 2 /g) and uniform pore size of 2–20 nm with the thickness of 250 nm. Via a simple post-treatment, a Pd-containing Pd@COF/NFC composite membrane , was accordingly synthesized, which showed excellent catalytic activity in catalyzing dechlorination of o -dichlorobenzene ( o -DCB) with high activity (the apparent reaction rate was 0.0235 min −1 ).We expect that our approach will further boost research on designing and employing functional COF film for catalysis.

BACKGROUND Graphene-supported nanocomposites are promising catalysts for their unique properties. Biosynthesis of such hybrid catalysts possesses several advantages over other methods such as less pollution. The palladium nanoparticle has versatile catalytic activities and its stability and activities can be significantly improved through hybridization with other nanomaterials including graphene. RESULTS In this study, bimetallic palladium-silver nanoparticles supported on graphene (Pd-Ag/rGO) was prepared through one-step biosynthesis using a bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 synthesized Pd-Ag/rGO through simultaneous reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ), palladium(II) nitrate (Pd(NO 3 ) 2 ) and graphene oxide (GO). The morphology and composition of the Pd-Ag/rGO were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the hydrogenation activity of synthesized Pd-Ag/rGO was tested using 4-nitrophenol as a model chemical at room temperatures and pressure. The Pd-Ag/rGO showed the best catalytic performance when Pd/Ag ratio was 1:1 and bacterial concentration was 1.0 of OD 600 (optical density measured at a wavelength of 600 nm) for the preparation of Pd-Ag/rGO. Therefore, the kinetic rate constant for 4-NP reduction was 0.2413 min −1 catalyzed by as-prepared Pd-Ag/rGO, which is listed as one of the top level reported catalysts for 4-NP reduction. CONCLUSION Therefore, this study demonstrated a material and energy-saving method to synthesize hybrid nanoparticles supported on graphene with high catalytic activity. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Typically, porous carbon granules, such as activated carbons and graphene sheets, are used as supporting materials to promote the catalytic activity of metallic catalysts. Herein, we report to apply one novel kind of carbon materials, carbon foam with a honeycomb-type open cell structure, as a promising monolithic support. The as-proposed carbon foam-supported Pd-based nanocatalysts are successfully fabricated by the layer-reduction method, and characterized by different physicochemical methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the Pd-based catalysts with a particle size around 4.0 nm are well dispersed on the surface of the cell wall in the carbon foam, and in contrast to the conventional Pd/C, the Pd/CF catalysts show better electrocatalytic activity toward the EOR in alkaline media. It is also found that the Pd1Ni2/CF catalyst shows the best catalytic activity and stability for the EOR, with the onset potential 90 mV more negative than that of Pd/CF, and the peak mass activity 2.8 times higher than that of Pd/CF.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) can elicit anti-cancer response against tumors growing at normal organs while sparing adjacent tissues. However, many orthotopic tumors respond poorly to ICB therapy due to the lack of pre-existing immune effector cells. Here, we describe a vaccine strategy that induces protective immunity and benefits ICB therapy. An injectable hydrogel platform that forms scaffold subcutaneously was applied to deliver autologous cancer cells undergoing oncolysis (ACCO) as immunogenic antigen source and toll-like receptor 9 agonists (CpG) as additional adjuvant. When administered as a prophylactic, the hydrogel-based vaccine, denoted as (ACCO+CpG)@Gel, successfully built a durable and tumor antigen-specific immune memory against subsequent challenges with orthotopic engraftment of autologous tumors including melanoma , colon carcinoma , and lung carcinoma . Although the vaccination did not completely prevent tumor occurrence, tumors orthotopically established in vaccinated mice acquired significant enhancement in tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells and intratumoral PD-L1 expression, which ameliorated the immune status and rendered the originally irresponsive tumors responsible to anti-PD-L1 therapy. Further treatment with PD-L1 blockade therapy efficiently delayed the tumor growth and prolonged the survival of these orthotopic cancer models. Thus, without the need for precisely delivering immunoactivatory agents to tumor or locally remodeling tumor microenvironment , “priming” intractable or inaccessible tumors for subsequent ICB therapy could be achieved by prophylactic vaccination with (ACCO+CpG)@Gel. These findings highlighted (ACCO+CpG)@Gel as a generalized framework of protective vaccine strategy that could be broadly applicable to potentiate ICB therapy against multiple types of orthotopic tumors growing in different regions.
