Fabrication of indicator array based on varying proportions of curcumin and alizarin. • Composite films exhibited a lower water solubility compared with pure PVA films. • The detection limit of indicator array for volatile amine gases was down to 1 ppm. • Color alterations of the array strongly correlated with pork spoilage indexes. In this work, a synergistic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/zein electrospun nanofiber array was fabricated using curcumin and alizarin as dual responsive pigments for visual pork freshness monitoring. The water solubility of the PVA/zein composite reduced from 100.00% to 31.74%–35.42% ( P < 0.05), exhibiting remarkably enhanced water resistance. The dual-pigment array displayed continuous color transitions from pH 4.0 to 11.0 and detected ammonia and dimethylamine at 1 ppm, whereas alizarin-only films needed 5 ppm. The total color difference ( ΔE ) of the array showed strong linear correlations with thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS, r = 0.98), pH ( r = 0.95), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N, r = 0.98) in pork during refrigerated storage. Notably, the array enabled visual grading of pork freshness (fresh/sub-fresh/spoiled) and exhibited excellent color stability under ambient and refrigerated conditions. This study presents an eco-friendly and scalable intelligent packaging platform with great potential for real-time, on-site food freshness assessment. In this study, a colorimetric array based on polyvinyl alcohol-zein composite substrates and varying ratios of curcumin and alizarin as responsive materials was fabricated via electrospinning for monitoring pork freshness during refrigeration. Hydrogels have attracted significant attention due to their high hydrophilicity and low viscosity. However, the poor mechanical properties of most hydrogels have limited their applications. By incorporating a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) into polyaspartic acid (PASP)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels, both physical and chemical cross-linking have enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The stainless steel mesh coated with the hydrogel exhibits super hydrophilicity and underwater super oleophobicity (the underwater oil contact angle is approximately 157°), and can stably separate oil-water mixtures in various oil phases and complex environments (acidic, alkaline, and saline). The removal efficiency remains above 98% even after 20 cycles of separation. Furthermore, the PASP/PVA semi-IPN hydrogel can effectively adsorb copper ions, and the hydrogel is biodegradable in the environment after use. These results demonstrate that the PASP/PVA semi-IPN hydrogel has promising prospects in wastewater treatment.

Respiratory monitoring, as a fundamental approach to assessing vital signs and health conditions, plays an irreplaceable role in early disease warning and personalized healthcare. However, conventional respiratory monitoring technologies are often limited by device rigidity and poor portability, severely restricting their use in daily monitoring. To address this issue, we propose a smart mask-based respiratory monitoring system based on a high-performance and biocompatible composite thermoelectric film (CTF). The CTF comprises electrospun polyvinyl alcohol nanofiber membrane as a flexible substrate, and screen-printed polyvinyl pyrrolidone/graphene-based conductive ink as the thermoelectric layer. Experimental results indicate that the CTF-based thermoelectric device demonstrates superior performance, characterized by a high Seebeck coefficient (20.6 μV/K), a rapid response time (0.4 s), an ultra-low detection limit (0.5 K), excellent long-term stability (200 cycles), and notable biocompatibility (cell viability: 97.5 %). In addition, the CTF exhibits excellent mechanical properties and enables non-contact sensing. By integrating CTF into a face mask and leveraging embedded systems and wireless transmission technology, respiratory signals can be effectively collected. A custom-designed convolutional neural network enables the classification of five different abnormal breathing patterns, achieving an accuracy of 97.4 %. This work offers an effective strategy for respiratory disease monitoring and holds significant potential for daily health tracking and clinical applications.

In recent years, global warming has precipitated a series of challenges to human living comfort. While some techniques can offer mitigation, their energy-intensive nature renders them unsuitable for widespread adoption in underdeveloped regions. To address these shortcomings, a cost-effective smart window with indoor temperature regulation was developed. It was fabricated by integrating {Mo154} with a blend of polyvinyl alcohol/poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PVA/PNIPAM) hydrogel. Based on the temperature induced phase transformation ability of PNIPAM, the composite hydrogel can be used to regulate the indoor temperature. Concurrently, PVA can mitigate the problem of volume shrinkage from PNIPAM phase transition. More importantly, the {Mo154} can reduce the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of Mo-PVA/PNIPAM hydrogel, as well as provide photothermal properties for intelligently sensing the outside temperature. The smart window can display a favorable sunlight modulation property (ΔTsol = 80.8%) and a rapid heating rate response to light exposure. Due to the presence of the {Mo154}, the smart window became opaque to block sunlight when the indoor temperature exceeded 28.9 oC. This feature can keep indoor cooling in the hot summer without any energy consumption. Moreover, the Mo-PVA/PNIPAM-based smart window also demonstrated favorable durability, maintaining its functionality after 100 times heating (40 oC)-cooling (20 oC) cycles, which can support long time usage and suit for the underdeveloped areas with limited electric energy.

A novel glucose sensor was reported that consisted of two-dimensional (2D) Au nanosphere arrays and glucose-responsive hydrogel film. This sensor exhibited an intense diffraction signal and an obvious diffraction color on a quartz slide due to the strong diffraction intensity of the Au nanosphere arrays. Thus, glucose was detected via the variation of diffraction wavelength and diffraction color, without a high reflective mirror. In addition, by introducing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to crosslink the phenylboronic acid (PBA)-modified hydrogel film, the diffraction wavelength of the 2D Au nanosphere arrays/hydrogel composite film shifted in the same direction in high ionic strength condition. In particular, it showed a nearly linear red-shift when the glucose concentration increased from 0 mM to 20 mM. Moreover, this glucose sensor displayed good reproducibility. The nearly linear response and good reproducibility were highly helpful for improving practical application of this glucose sensor.

This study presents the development and comprehensive characterization of biopolymer-based nanofibrous composites composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), boric acid (BA), and a natural antifungal agent natamycin (NAT), designed for therapeutic applications. A dual-layer 3D-fiber composite (PVA/CS/BA_PVA/NAT) was successfully fabricated using a layer-by-layer 3D bioprinting technique and electro-spinning, integrating BA into the core matrix and NAT into the outer layer. Mechanical tests revealed a significantly improved elastic modulus of 763.04 ± 14.54 MPa and the highest ultimate tensile stress (50.45 ± 2.58 MPa) among all samples. Despite a moderate strain at break (11.77 ± 0.49%), the composite preserved sufficient elasticity suitable for biological interfaces. Morphological assessment via SEM confirmed the successful deposition of continuous and bead-free nanofibers, with controlled fiber alignment and reduced average fiber diameters, especially in the BA-incorporated structure. The dual-layered system displayed enhanced uniformity and structural coherence. The drug release analysis demonstrated sustained NAT delivery over a 90 min period. Kinetic modeling showed a high correlation with the Korsmeyer–Peppas model (R2> 0.99), suggesting diffusion-controlled release, supported by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model’s Fickian diffusion exponent. In contrast, zero- and first-order models exhibited weaker fits, underscoring the relevance of a matrix-based release mechanism governed by the layered configuration. Crucially, antifungal assays againstCandida albicansrevealed substantial bioactivity. The PVA/CS/BA_PVA/NAT formulation achieved the largest inhibition zone (1.64 ± 0.13 cm), significantly outperforming single-layer controls such as PVA/CS/BA (1.25 ± 0.08 cm) and PVA/CS_PVA/NAT (1.43 ± 0.08 cm), while neat PVA exhibited no inhibition. These results confirm the synergistic antifungal efficacy of BA and NAT within the dual-layer structure. Together, these findings highlight the potential of the 3D-printed PVA/CS/BA_PVA/NAT composite as a mechanically robust, morphologically optimized, and bioactive platform for antifungal therapy and wound-healing applications.

Time-dependent phosphorescence color (TDPC) materials, characterized by persistent luminescence, high quantum yield, and superior optical performance, have attracted increasing attention for information encryption applications. However, achieving high performance room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) remains challenging, as oxygen readily quenches triplet excitons and nonradiative decay pathways arising from molecular vibrations and rotations further suppress phosphorescence. In this study, we designed and integrated three functional components: luminescent carbon dots (CDs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and the polymer matrix poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Owing to the synergistic interplay of multiple interactions, the CDs-LDH composites exhibit pronounced TDPC behavior. The confinement within LDHs and the electrostatic interactions between LDHs and CDs effectively restrict the motion of CDs and suppress aggregation-induced quenching, thereby laying the groundwork for RTP properties. Furthermore, interfacial electrostatic repulsion and hydrogen bonding within the CDs-LDH@PVA system collaboratively generate a rigid architecture that suppresses nonradiative decay pathways of triplet excitons, thereby enhancing TDPC. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the CDs-LDH@PVA composite demonstrates an ultralong RTP lifetime of 87.81 ms, representing a significant performance breakthrough and providing a novel strategy for the design of high-efficiency organic–inorganic TDPC materials.

The conformal integration of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center nanodiamond arrays onto soft, hydrated, curvilinear biological interfaces remains a fundamental challenge for in vivo quantum sensing and imaging. Conventional transfer techniques often fail due to reliance on high temperature, corrosive chemicals, or mechanical peeling, leading to pattern damage, low fidelity, or poor biocompatibility. Here, we report a transfer strategy utilizing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) soluble tape that enabling rapid, residue-free, high-fidelity transfer of nanodiamond patterns onto diverse biointerfaces. The success of this method is rooted in a unique “hydrate-soften-expand-self-peel” mechanism of the PVA backing. In situ mechanical tracking reveals non-uniform PVA swelling generates transient normal and shear stresses at the interface. These stresses delaminate the tape within 3 min at room temperature while promoting adhesion of nanodiamonds to the substrate. In contrast, conventional tapes undergo passive dissolution and collapse, causing residue contamination and reduced efficiency. Leveraging this mechanism, we achieve conformal patterning on ultra-soft hydrogels (∼0.6 kPa) and highly curved bio-surfaces (hair, 100 µm − 1 ). Additionally, we demonstrate a dual-identity verification system integrating data storage and physical unclonable functions on a hydrogel contact lens. This work provides a versatile tool for bio-interface engineering and a general framework for gentle, efficient transfer of functional nanomaterials.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a kind of refractory organic polymer with high COD and low BOD. Efficient treatment of PVA wastewater has always been a challenging subject especially for ultra-high concentration (UHC). In this paper, based on our previous work, a sequential combination process method including NaClO chain breakage followed by Cu x O activated carbon catalytic oxidation was developed to efficient treat UHC PVA wastewater. The sequential combination system was optimized by monitoring the treatment performance with different key parameters (such as oxidant dosage, Cu loading and catalyst dosage, two-stage reaction time, pH value, etc.). And the COD of PVA wastewater declined from the initial 206,240.00 mg/L to 557.78 mg/L (removal rate 99.73 %), the PVA concentration decreased from the initial 171,325.00 mg/L to 19.94 mg/L (removal rate 99.99 %) under the optimal conditions. Through the discussion of the combined processes, it was found that both chain breakage and catalytic oxidation were necessary and indispensable to achieve efficient degradation of PVA wastewater. Additionally, the free radical scavenging experiments show that the combined oxidation process was mainly controlled by the catalytic oxidation process, and followed the free radical reaction mechanism with·OH as the main oxidant. Based on this, it is recommended that subsequent researchers focus on the combined process for the treat of refractory organic wastewater.

A novel porous xerogel of phytic acid (PA)-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was fabricated via a straightforward condensation reaction between PVA, urea, and PA. Besides serving as crosslinking agents, urea and PA also act as the pore forming agents and adsorptive functional groups of this xerogel , respectively. The decomposition and gasification of urea during synthesis formed an interconnected porous structure, dramatically raising the content of PA groups in the material as well as expose more adsorptive groups on its surface. This resultant structural characteristic allows the material to display outstanding adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate. Furthermore, the utilization of a compound crosslinker (urea/PA) can provide PVA with a sturdier crosslinking structure compared to the use of the two agents separately. As a result, the material shows excellent reusability, and its adsorption capacity can reach up to 89% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that there is a strong interaction between PA and uranium ions, conferring the material an impressive selectivity for uranium. This work could broaden insights into the tailored design and synthesis of polymer materials for the extraction of uranium.

Cr(VI) pollution severely threatens the water environment and human health. One of the effective ways to solve this problem is to develop environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbents. This paper proposes a highly efficient Cr(VI) adsorbent based on tannic acid coating PVA/PVP/PEI nanofibrous membrane. The adsorbent is environment-friendly and has satisfying water stability and adsorption performance. The optimum preparation conditions, adsorption conditions, and the influence of ionic strength and coexisting ions were investigated comprehensively. Through the study of adsorption kinetics and isotherms, the adsorption of Cr(VI) on the nanofibrous membrane was found following the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption isotherm model following the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities were 631.97 mg/g, 667.52 mg/g, and 695.04 mg/g at 298 K, 308 K, and 318 K, respectively. After adsorption of Cr(VI), the membrane can be converted to high purity Cr 2 O 3 by calcination. The tannin-coated PVA/PVP/PEI nanofibrous membrane is a promising adsorbent because it can efficiently adsorb Cr(VI) and convert highly toxic Cr(VI) into hypotoxic Cr(III).

With the rapid development of fifth-generation (5G) communication, the polymeric films with satisfactory flame retardancy and high thermal conductivity have become one of the hot topics in academic research and commercial applications. Herein, novel copper ethylene diaminetetrakis-(methylene phosphonate) functionalizing boron nitride nanosheet (Cu-EDTMP@BNNNS) was prepared by in-situ self-assembly method for reduction in the fire hazards of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film, as well as the improvement on its thermal conductive and mechanical performances. The good dispersion of 1Cu-EDTMP@1BNNNS in PVA matrix results in a 41-fold enhancement in thermal conductivity (8.4 W m −1 K −1 ) of the 1Cu-EDTMP@1BNNNS/PVA composite film compared to pure PVA film. In addition, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of the PVA composite film are 87.0% and 84.3%, respectively lower than the ones of pure PVA film. Moreover, the as-prepared composite film also possesses good flexibility, and high tensile strength (116 MPa).
