Synthesis of CuZrO3 nanocomposites/graphene and their application in modified electrodes for the co-detection of trace Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Yuanyuan Lu,Xinqiang Liang,Jianming Xu,Ziyi Zhao,Guangming Tian

CuZrO 3 nanocomposites were prepared by chemical precipitation and oxidation at a high temperature (700 °C). The structural features of the fabricated CuZrO 3 nanocomposites (CuZrO 3 NCs) were elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results presented herein show that these nanocomposites formed a nanograde needle structure with high crystallinity. By mixing with graphene (Gr), a CuZrO 3 -Gr composite modified glassy carbon electrode (CuZrO 3 -Gr/GCE) was successfully constructed for the simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in a acetate (NaAc-HAc) buffer solution (pH 4.6) via square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Due to the synergetic effect of the CuZrO 3 nanoparticles and graphene, the CuZrO 3 -Gr/GCE showed excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical stability in the presence of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. The limits of detection were 0.1 μg L −1 for Pb(II) and 0.5 μg L −1 for Cd(II). Application of this method for the co-detection of two ions in soil samples is expected to obtain useful results and possess significant advantages over tradition detection methods.

Enhanced photocatalytic New Coccine degradation and Pb(II) reduction over graphene oxide-TiO2 composite in the presence of aspartic acid-β-cyclodextrin

Guanghui Wang,Wenzhe Fan,Qin Li,Nansheng Deng

In this work, aspartic acid-β-cyclodextrin (ACD) was synthesized by the reaction of β-cyclodextrin with aspartic acid and epichlorohydrin, and graphene oxide-TiO 2 (GO-TiO 2 ) composite catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal method. The complexation of ACD with New Coccine (NC) and Pb 2+ was characterized with FT-IR and XPS, respectively, the results show that ACD can simultaneously complex NC and Pb 2+ . XRD analysis and SEM images of GO-TiO 2 show that TiO 2 platelets are well distributed on both sides of the graphene oxide sheets, and display a similar XRD pattern to the pure TiO 2 nanoparticles with the typical diffraction peak of anatase phase. The effects of ACD on the photocatalytic degradation of NC and photocatalytic reduction of Pb 2+ were investigated in the single pollution system, and the synergistic effects on the simultaneous photocatalytic NC degradation and Pb 2+ reduction in the presence of ACD were also evaluated. The results showed that the presence of ACD was favorable to the acceleration of photocatalytic oxidation of NC and photocatalytic reduction of Pb 2+ in the single pollution system, and the photocatalytic reaction rate constants of NC and Pb 2+ in the presence of ACD increased 58% and 42%, respectively. For the combined pollution system, the synergistic effects on the simultaneous conversion of NC and Pb 2+ in aqueous solutions were also further enhanced. ACD enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the improvement of the electron transfer and mass transfer at the GO-TiO 2 interface.

A versatile β-cyclodextrin and polyethyleneimine bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent for simultaneous capture of methyl orange and Pb(II) from complex wastewater

Bo Chen,Sijiang Chen,Huinan Zhao,Yang Liu,Fengxia Long,Xuejun Pan

Ascribing to their significant differences in physicochemical properties , it is extremely challenging to treat complex wastewater containing more than one class of pollutants via one-step treatment. Here, we focused on disposal of complex wastewater bearing organic dye and heavy metal by using adsorptive method. Thus, by combining the advantages of polyethyleneimine (PEI), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as well as Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles , a versatile β-CD and PEI bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD) with spatially separated sorption sites was successfully constructed for simultaneous capture of methyl orange (MO) and Pb(II) in complex wastewater. In this setting, β-CD cavities and positively charged N-containing groups of PEI were mainly responsible for removal of MO via host-guest inclusion and electrostatic attraction, respectively, and oxygen-bearing groups on the edge of β-CD as well as the free amino moieties in PEI acted as the active sites for Pb(II) uptake. In their individual mono-pollutant system, the adsorption processes can be better described via applying pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Interestingly, presence of MO in Pb(II)-MO binary system significantly promoted the uptake of Pb(II). But the coexisting Pb(II) had almost no effects on MO uptake. Such results demonstrated that both MO and Pb(II) could be simultaneously and synergistically removed by Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD through multiple mechanisms (such as electrostatic attraction, host-guest inclusion, chelating, etc.). Particularly, the excellent regeneration and stability make Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD an ideal integrative adsorbent for purification of actual wastewater contaminated by MO and Pb(II). Thus, this study provides some insights into designing a well-performed and easily recyclable adsorbent for simultaneous and synergetic capture of both organic and inorganic contaminants in complex wastewater.

Elevated CO2 increases glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) in the rhizosphere of Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings in Pb- and Cd-contaminated soils

Xia Jia,Yonghua Zhao,Tuo Liu,Shuping Huang,Yafei Chang

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), which contains glycoproteins produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as well as non-mycorrhizal-related heat-stable proteins, lipids, and humic materials, is generally categorized into two fractions: easily extractable GRSP (EE-GRSP) and total GRSP (T-GRSP). GRSP plays an important role in soil carbon (C) sequestration and can stabilize heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and manganese (Mn). Soil contamination by heavy metals is occurring in conjunction with rising atmospheric CO 2 in natural ecosystems due to human activities. However, the response of GRSP to elevated CO 2 combined with heavy metal contamination has not been widely reported. Here, we investigated the response of GRSP to elevated CO 2 in the rhizosphere of Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings in Pb- and Cd-contaminated soils. Elevated CO 2 (700 μmol mol −1 ) significantly increased T- and EE- GRSP concentrations in soils contaminated with Cd, Pb or Cd + Pb. GRSP contributed more carbon to the rhizosphere soil organic carbon pool under elevated CO 2  + heavy metals than under ambient CO 2 . The amount of Cd and Pb bound to GRSP was significantly higher under elevated (compared to ambient) CO 2 ; and elevated CO 2 increased the ratio of GRSP-bound Cd and Pb to total Cd and Pb. However, available Cd and Pb in rhizosphere soil under increased elevated CO 2 compared to ambient CO 2 . The combination of both metals and elevated CO 2 led to a significant increase in available Pb in rhizosphere soil compared to the Pb treatment alone. In conclusion, increased GRSP produced under elevated CO 2 could contribute to sequestration of soil pollutants by adsorption of Cd and Pb.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes affect yield, antioxidant response, and rhizosphere microbial community of scented rice under combined cadmium-lead (Cd–Pb) stress

Zhilong Chen,Yixian Ma,Yong Ren,Lin Ma,Xiangru Tang,Shenggang Pan,Meiyang Duan,Hua Tian,Zhaowen Mo

Rice production is threatened by heavy metal stress. The use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in agriculture has been reported in previous studies. We aimed to quantify the impact of MWCNTs on the growth and physiological characteristics of scented rice under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stresses. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted, two scented rice varieties Yuxiangyouzhan and Xiangyaxiangzhan were used as materials grown under different concentrations of MWCNTs (0, 100, and 300 mg kg −1 recorded as CK, CNPs100, and CNPs300, respectively). The yield, antioxidant response, and rhizosphere microbial community of scented rice were studied. The results showed that compared with the CK treatment, the CNPs100 and CNPs300 treatments increased leaf dry weight by 17.95%–56.22% at the heading stage, and the H 2 O 2 content in leaves decreased significantly by 36.64%–42.27% at the maturity stage. Under CNPs100 treatment, the grain yield of two scented rice varieties increased significantly by 17.54% and 27.40%, respectively. The MWCNTs regulated the distribution of the Cd and Pb in different plant tissues. The content of Cd (0.11–0.20 mg kg −1 ) and Pb (0.01–0.04 mg kg −1 ) in grain were at a safety level (<0.2 mg kg −1 ). Moreover, MWCNTs increased soil microbial community abundance and altered community composition structure under Cd–Pb stress, which in turn improved agronomic traits and quality of scented rice. Overall, this study suggested that the application of MWCNTs regulates the growth, yield, physiological response , and soil microbial community, the genotypes response effect of scented rice to MWCNTs is needed further studied.

Comparative study on adsorption performance of Pb(II) using fly ash-based mesoporous silica through sol-gel method with different aging temperature

Dandan Liu,Shiyao Qin,Huimin Qiao,Xin Xing,Kezhou Yan

The preparation of mesoporous silica materials from fly ash for the adsorption of heavy metals represents a significant approach to resource utilization. In this study, the sol-gel process was employed to synthesize amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with varying pore structure properties (denoted as MS-NH 2 -T, where T = 20 °C, 40 °C, and 90 °C) by controlling the aging temperature. The effects of adsorption conditions on the adsorption efficiency of Pb(II) were investigated, and the differences in the adsorption behavior of amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with distinct pore structures were compared and analyzed using typical adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and rate-limiting adsorption kinetics models. The results indicated variations in specific surface area (625 m 2  g −1 , 640 m 2  g −1 , and 345 m 2  g −1 ), average pore size (3 nm, 7 nm, and 15 nm), and total pore volume (0.5 cm 3  g −1 , 1.0 cm 3  g −1 , and 1.3 cm 3  g −1 ) among the mesoporous silica synthesized at different aging temperatures. Following amino modification, Pb(II) can be adsorbed through mechanisms such as pore adsorption, electrostatic attraction, and complexation. The adsorption capacities of the amino-functionalized mesoporous silica with varying pore structures were found to be 330 mg g −1 , 303 mg g −1 , and 204 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption rate constant of the MS-NH 2 -90 material, which features a larger pore size and volume, was determined to be 0.0290 and 0.0008, with a time to reach adsorption equilibrium of 60 min, outperforming the MS-NH 2 -20 and MS-NH 2 -40 materials under identical conditions (initial concentration of 300 mg L −1 ). Overall, mesoporous silica with a larger specific surface area demonstrates a higher adsorption capacity, while materials with increased pore size and pore volume exhibit faster adsorption rates. The findings of this study will assist in the selection of the most appropriate amino-functionalized mesoporous silica materials for the adsorption of Pb(II), based on whether the emphasis is on adsorption rate or capacity.

Phosphorylated chitosan-lignin composites for efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous environments and sustainable upcycling of spent adsorbents

Xiuxian Zhao,Yuhan Fang,Liang Xue,Yizhong Lu,Riming Hu,Jiayuan Yu,Xuchuan Jiang,Junhua Sun

Efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from wastewater is crucial for safeguarding environmental safety and public health. Biomass-based adsorbents with surface-specific functionality hold great promise for selective adsorption of metal cations. In this study, a novel phosphorylated chitosan-lignin (PCSL) composite is successfully synthesized via Mannich reaction. The PCSL exhibits remarkable selectivity in the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II), as evidenced by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, DFT analysis reveals that the incorporation of phosphate groups significantly enhances the chelation capacity of the adsorbent towards heavy metals. The PCSL demonstrates ultrafast adsorption capabilities for Pb(II) and Cu(II). Specifically, the adsorption processes reach equilibrium within 7 min and 5 min, respectively, with maximum adsorption capacities of 207.9 mg·g −1 for Pb(II) and 100.0 mg·g −1 for Cu(II). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates that the adsorption mechanisms involve both chemical complexation and electrostatic attraction. Notably, the adsorbent can be recycled many times, and the spent Cu-PCSL, upon pyrolysis treatment, demonstrate remarkable catalytic activity in nitrate reduction reactions, with Faradaic efficiencies as high as 98.3 % and NH 3 yield of 4.3 mg·h −1 ·mg cat. −1 . This work not only advances the progression of biomass adsorbents but also demonstrates considerable industrial potential in mitigating water pollution and promoting sustainable development.

The enhancement of energy storage performance of BaTiO3–Bi(Mg0·5Ti0.5)O3 Pb-free ceramics via an optimized viscous polymer process route

Lishun Yang,Fukang Chen,Dezhao Meng,Qin Li,Meng Qi,Xinyu Chen,Kun Yu,Quan Li,Jingang Yang,Chunlin Song,Gang Liu,Lixue Zhang,Li Jin,Yan Yan

In this study, the viscous polymer processing (VPP) technique is implemented to optimize the characteristics of bulk (1- x )BaTiO 3 - x Bi(Mg 0·5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 (BT- x BMT) lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics , with a focus on enhancing the recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ), improving breakdown strength resistance ( E b ), and increasing storage efficiency ( η ). The influence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) inclusion in the VPP process on the resulting dielectric ceramics is thoroughly investigated, covering rheological, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties . The results reveal that a gradual increase in PVA quantity during the VPP process effectively improves the density of ceramic blanks. However, an excess of PVA leads to void formation in the ceramic blanks post-debinding, hindering the achievement of a dense structure in the final ceramics and causing performance degradation. The resulting BT-0.405BMT-40 wt% PVA ceramic showed excellent storage performance, with W rec , η , and E b of 6.55 J/cm 3 81.45 %, and 480 kV/cm, respectively. In comparison to bulk BT-0.405BMT ceramics, there is a notable 2.47-fold increase in W rec and a 1.92-fold increase in E b , accompanied by a substantial improvement in η . Moreover, the BT-BMT-40 wt% PVA ceramic exhibits favorable temperature stability (30–150 °C), frequency stability (1–50 Hz), and commendable charge/discharge performance.

Study on the Optimization of the Morphology and Nucleation Mechanism of Electroplated Sn-Pb Coatings by the Synergistic Effect of Composite Additives

Xiangqing Liu,Chenyu Li,Jie Yu,Ruiqi Liu,Min Shang,Xiaolin Su,Jinye Yao,Haitao Ma

This study investigates the synergistic effects of single- and binary-additive systems on the morphology and nucleation mechanism of Sn-Pb alloy electrodeposited coatings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry were applied in order to obtain more information on the action mechanisms of single-additive systems (cinnamaldehyde, PEG-2000, gelatin, vanillin) and binary ones (0.1 g/L cinnamaldehyde + 0.2 g/L PEG-2000) in Sn-Pb electroplating. Results showed that the use of binary-additive systems based on cinnamaldehyde and PEG-2000 significantly improved coating quality, leading to a smooth and uniform surface, dense grains, and a near-eutectic composition (Sn 63.10 wt.%, Pb 36.90 wt.%). This was because the composite additive, through synergistic effects, exhibited the highest cathodic polarization and the largest charge transfer resistance (189.20 Ω cm2), thus inhibiting the electrodeposition process of Sn2+and Pb2+. Chronoamperometry revealed that, unlike single additives (PEG-2000 or cinnamaldehyde), the binary-additive system promoted a transition of nucleation mode to instantaneous nucleation, accompanied by a decrease in the peak current and an extension of the corresponding time. This study provides a theoretical basis and experimental support for understanding the nucleation mode of Sn-Pb electroplating, as well as optimizing the synergistic mechanism of additives.

Tuning a consistent near-infrared photo-initiated multimodal tumor strategy based on the core–shell structure of gold star@PB@CuS nanoparticles

Yao Zhong,Xiaolei Li,Li Ye,Pengcheng Zhu,Lin Zhuang

Anisotropic gold nanostars are near-infrared (NIR) absorbing photosensitizers applied in photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the thermodynamic instability of the gold nanostars leading to passivation limits their anti-tumor efficacy in addressing spreading and metastatic tumors. Herein gold star@PB@CuS (GPC) nanoparticles with a core–shell structure were designed and fabricated to address the shortcomings above and achieve multimodal anti-tumor treatment. GPC exhibits a broader absorption peak (810 nm) at the near-infrared region (NIR) through the synergistic effect, achieving excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and stability along with stronger photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The high tunable plasmon resonances of gold nanostars enable them to optimize the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect through adjustments in their shape and size. This ensures that the laser wavelengths used for PTT and PDT processes of GPC are coherent at 808 nm (in the so-called “first bio-window”), without significant passivation. Simultaneously, we found that GPC further introduced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) by enabling glutathione (GSH) depletion, Fenton-like reactions, and self-supplied O2 to assist type-I PDT breaking in hypoxia and over expressed the GSH tumor microenvironment (TME). The endogenous and exogenous triggered nanotherapeutic platform PTT/PDT/CDT enables a complete ablation of 4T1 tumors within the first bio-window, showcasing enhanced photo-therapeutic efficacy and addressing critical challenges in current anti-tumor strategies.

Comparative study of different organic and inorganic sulfide intercalated layered double hydroxides to remove Cu(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions

Jiyue Ding,Xiaoyu Liu,Ning Zhang,Yi Wang,Ke Cui,Huachi Yu,Jingyi Chen,Qingyang Xu,Jianyang Gao,Huaizhi Shao,Zilin Meng

The Mg-Al layered double hydroxides are intercalated with inorganic sulfides of sodium trithiocarbonate (Na 2 CS 3 ), sodium sulfide (Na 2 S), and organic sulfides of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDTC), trithiocyanuric acid (TMT) via the co-precipitation method for the purpose of removing Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ in aqueous solutions. The sorbents are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM, XPS and zeta potential. The sorption kinetic data fits well with the pseudo-second-order model and the intra-particle diffusion model. The sorption isotherm data for Cu 2+ align more closely with the Langmuir model, suggesting a preference for monolayer adsorption, whereas Pb 2+ sorption better follows the Freundlich model, indicating heterogeneous multilayer adsorption, thus revealing distinct sorption processes. Among the sulfur-intercalated LDHs, SDTC@LDH exhibits the highest sorption capacity for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ , reaching 357.14 mg/L and 274.76 mg/L, respectively. Molecular simulations further elucidate the superior performance of organic sulfur-intercalated LDHs, demonstrating higher binding energies and stronger affinity between organic sulfides and Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ . The sorption mechanisms for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ are explored: Cu 2+ preferentially reacts with interlayer sulfides in LDHs, subsequently displacing hydroxyl groups from the LDHs layers to form precipitates, whereas Pb 2+ first bonds with hydroxyl groups on the LDHs layers, causing structural collapse, followed by capture by exposed interlayer sulfides. Dynamic sorption experiments demonstrate that SDTC@LDH can treat larger volumes of aqueous solutions compared to other adsorbents, indicating that SDTC@LDH possesses superior sustained sorption capacity in water treatment applications. Coexisting ion experiments, pH tests, reusability studies, and sulfide/heavy metal leaching assessments confirm the high selectivity and stability of the adsorbents for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ , with minimal risk of secondary pollution. Metal speciation analysis reveals that organic sulfur-intercalated LDHs provide more stable sorption for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ .
