Mechanistic Insights into Ammonia Oxidation over Electron Transfer-Induced Pt–O–Cu Dual Sites

Yifan Li,Jiaxing Li,Lin Chen,Yunpeng Long,Xing Yuan,Junhua Li,Yue Peng

The low selectivity for N2 in the oxidation of NH3 over commercial Pt/Al2O3 catalysts is primarily due to the overoxidation of NH3 facilitated by Pt sites, leading to the formation of unwanted byproducts such as N2O and NO. In this study, we present a novel strategy to enhance N2 selectivity while maintaining NH3 conversion by constructing Pt–O–Cu dual sites. These dual sites exhibit synergistic acid-redox characteristics through surface electron transfer mediated by bridged lattice oxygen. Additionally, the ability of surface-adsorbed oxygen to exchange with lattice oxygen is significantly improved. The electron-deficient Cu sites enhance NH3 adsorption by providing empty 3d orbitals, while the electron-rich Pt sites promote NH3 dehydrogenation. Subsequently, the formation of –NH or –N intermediates at the Pt sites can react with adsorbed NH3 on the Cu sites to produce N2, predominantly following the integrated selective catalytic reduction mechanism. The optimized dual-site catalyst achieves over 95% NH3 conversion and N2 selectivity at 180 °C.

Constructing Pt/Hierarchical HY Bifunctional Catalysts for Selective Hydroisomerization of Phenanthrene to Alkyl-Adamantanes

Nan Jiang,Xiaopo Niu,Danni Liu,Kaige Zhang,Zhen Guo,Yue Qin,Wenli Zhao,Xiangwen Zhang,Qingfa Wang

Designing bifunctional catalysts for efficient hydroisomerization of phenanthrene to alkyl-adamantane is a great challenge for producing high-density fuels. Herein, a bifunctional Pt catalyst was fabricated by developing hierarchical H-MSY-T zeolites with an NOA-co strategy. The influence of different mesopore template agents on the hierarchical structure of H-MSY-T zeolite was investigated. Effective regulation of pore structure and acid distribution of zeolites was achieved by adjusting the templating agents. The block copolymer P123 promoted the formation of mesoporous structures via self-assembly with a large mesopore centered at 8 nm. Large mesoporous structure and suitable distribution of Bronsted acid boosted the hydroisomerization of phenanthrene. The highest alkyl-adamantane yield of 45.9 wt% was achieved on the Pt/MSY-P1 catalyst and a reaction network of hydroisomerization was proposed. This work provides guidance to design highly selective bifunctional catalysts for the one-step hydroconversion of tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons into high-density fuels.

Core-shell bimetallic alloyed Pd@Pt nanocubes for synergistic photothermal/chemodynamic infectious wound therapy

Heying Li,Jingming Zhai,Qingnan Zhang,Jinghua Li

Infections resulting from bacteria resistant to antibiotics represent a significant risk to human health. Therefore, exploring novel and effective antibacterial treatment strategies as substitutes for traditional antibiotics is essential. Here, we developed heterogeneous bimetallic Pd@Pt Cubes with a core-shell structure for near-infrared light-enhanced bacterial infection treatment. Heterogeneous core-shell bimetallic Pd@Pt nanocubes demonstrated remarkable photothermal properties along with peroxidase-mimic activity, promoting the combined interaction between photothermal antibacterial therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). As demonstrated in vitro antibacterial tests, Pd@Pt Cubes can effectively eliminate both E. coli and S. aureus , and enhance drug penetration in biofilm by disrupting the biofilm. Furthermore, in vivo antibacterial tests indicated that Pd@Pt Cubes can significantly enhance the repair of tissues in bacterial infection sites. Overall, this study constructed an efficient and multifunctional antibacterial nanoplatform through a rational combination and design, and achieved PTT/CDT bimodal bacterial infection treatment through multiple enhancement strategies.

Sm doped PYN-PZ-PT piezoelectric ceramics with large piezoelectricity and excellent temperature stability

Zhengxiu Ma,Wenwu Cao

Obtaining a large piezoelectric coefficient and high temperature stability simultaneously in piezoelectric ceramics is a formidable challenge. By strategically designing a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition with localized structural heterogeneity, 0.1 Pb(Yb 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 -0.435PbZrO 3 -0.465PbTiO 3 -1mol% Sm ceramic demonstrates outstanding electromechanical performance with d 33  = 585 pC/N, k p  = 0.66, T C  = 365 °C, and outstanding temperature stability, the piezoelectric coefficient d 33 varies less than 10 % in the temperature range of 25–260 °C, making it a promising candidate for applications in high-temperature transducers and sensors. Our investigations revealed that the enhanced piezoelectricity originates from Sm 3+ induced intensification of relaxor behavior and structural refinement of hierarchical nanodomains, while the high temperature stability is attributed to the larger volume fraction of ferroelectric domains of the T-phase, which provide “pinning” of the nanodomains through the hierarchical domain structure.

Thalidomide-based Pt(IV) prodrugs designed to exert synergistic effect of immunomodulation and chemotherapy

Zhe Li,Xiao-Jing Ding,Xin Qiao,Xiao-Meng Liu,Xin Qiao,Cheng-Zhi Xie,Rui-Ping Liu,Jing-Yuan Xu

Combination of immune- and chemo-therapy has become a new trend in cancer treatment. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved immune-modulatory agent, thalidomide , can modulate the related proteins of upstream signaling pathway of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), including nuclear transcription factor κ B (NF- κ B), hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), all acting as key antitumor target proteins. In this work, we conjugated thalidomide with oxidized cisplatin to construct multi-functional Pt(IV) prodrugs , named thaliplatins 4 – 6 , to investigate the anti-tumor effect of immuno- and chemo-therapy. Among them, thaliplatin 6 exerted remarkable cytotoxicity against the tested cancer cell lines, showing 15–26 and 9–20 times higher IC 50 values than those of single cisplatin or the combination of cisplatin + thalidomide, respectively. Moreover, thaliplatin 6 could rapidly accumulated into cells, markedly triggered DNA damage, and induced cell S phase arrest and apoptosis, as well as inhibited cell migration and invasion in breast carcinoma cell line (MCF-7). Fluorescent confocal and western blotting experiments proved that 6 significantly regulated NF- κ B, EGFR, HIF-1 α and phosphor-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 ( p -STAT3), and simultaneously inhibited PD-L1 expression to interrupt programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 signaling pathway, suggesting a synergistic action of cisplatin and thalidomide. Most strikingly, in vivo tests indicated that 6 effectively decreased tumor growth with no observable systemic toxicity, being superior to the anticancer efficacy of cisplatin.

Pt-Triggered Reversal in Acetone Sensing: Crystal Phase-Dependent Dispersion Governs Performance of Fe2O3

Tianjun Hu,Mengtian Kang,Yaru Chen,Yuzhu Tian,Ying Wang,Jiale Li,Junming Zhang,Ergui Luo,Baoliang Lv,Jianfeng Jia

The crystal phase of metal oxide supports critically governs the gas-sensing performance by modulating metal–support interactions. This study reveals a counterintuitive “reversal effect” induced by Pt modification on the acetone-sensing properties of γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3. Despite pristine α-Fe2O3 exhibiting a 9.4-fold higher response to acetone than γ-Fe2O3 (179 vs 19), even though the latter possesses a 4-fold larger specific surface area, Pt functionalization dramatically reverses this performance hierarchy. After loading 0.3 wt % Pt, Pt–Fe2O3-γ achieves an exceptional response of 1470 to 100 ppm acetone (77-fold enhancement over pristine γ-Fe2O3), whereas Pt–Fe2O3-α suffers a 9.4-fold reduction. Oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) and structural characterization demonstrate that this reversal stems from the crystal phase-dependent Pt dispersion: γ-Fe2O3 facilitates atomic dispersion of Pt, optimizing gas adsorption and electron transfer, while α-Fe2O3 promotes Pt nanoparticle aggregation, which impedes charge transport despite enhanced oxygen adsorption. This work elucidates a new mechanism wherein the support crystal phase dictates noble metal dispersion states to control sensing behavior, providing a paradigm for designing phase-engineered sensing materials.

Plasmonic Hot-Electron-Painted Au@Pt Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Detection of H2O2

Chang Xia,Wei He,Xiao Feng Yang,Peng Fei Gao,Shu Jun Zhen,Yuan Fang Li,Cheng Zhi Huang

Plasmon-driven catalysis of metal nanostructures has garnered wide interest. Here, a photogenerated plasmonic hot-electron painting strategy was reported to form Au@Pt composite nanoparticles (Au@Pt NPs) with high catalytic reactivity without using reducing agents. Au nanoparticles, including Au nanospheres (Au NSs), Au nanorods (Au NRs), and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), generated hot electrons under localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation, which made the platinum precursor reduced as a consequence that Pt(0) atoms were painted on the surface of Au NPs to form an asymmetric Pt shell outside the plasmonic Au core. Compared with bare Au NPs, Au@Pt NPs exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of H2O2 due to the bimetallic synergistic effect and great dispersion of Au@Pt NP-modified indium tin oxide (Au@Pt NPs/ITO). It exhibited a linear detection of H2O2 in a wide concentration range from 0.5 to 1000 μM with a low detection limit of 0.11 μM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the plasmonic hot-electron-painted Au@Pt NPs represent a novel and simple method for the design of advanced noble asymmetric metal nanomaterials.

Tuning Pt-TiO2 Interactions to Switch Inhibition to Synergy in Toluene–Acetone Mixture Combustion

Yuqin Lu,Hua Deng,Xueshan Zhang,Jianguo Ding,Sijia Bai,Lian Wang,Hong He

The inhibitory interactions among various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during combustion in industrial exhaust gases pose a significant challenge for catalytic technologies, primarily due to a lack of effective approaches to counter these adverse effects. The interaction between Pt and TiO2 was readily tuned through hydrogen reduction of the TiO2 matrix (Pt/TiO2-800), which ultimately transformed the inhibitory effect into a synergistic effect in a toluene–acetone mixture. Optimal catalytic activity was achieved at 0.6 wt % Pt loading, with 0.6Pt/TiO2-800 lowering reaction temperatures by 21 °C for toluene and 24 °C for acetone in mixed VOC oxidation. Characterization reveals that Pt/TiO2-800 possesses abundant oxygen vacancy clusters, enhancing TiO2-Pt electron transfer, diversifying Pt nanoparticle sizes, stabilizing low-valent Pt species, and improving oxidative capacity. DFT calculations further underscore the role of oxygen vacancy in modulating the Pt electronic environment and enhancing defect-enhanced adsorption. This work advances Pt-TiO2 interaction understanding and offers an effective catalyst for VOCs abatement, addressing inhibitory effects in mixed VOCs systems.

Atom Walls Confined Hyperdispersed Pt Nanocrystal Electrocatalysts for a Photovoltaic-Integrated Energy Storage System

Zhi Liu,Yu Dai,Xin Han,Rong Zheng,Chengyi Hou,Yaogang Li,Hongzhi Wang,Kerui Li,Qinghong Zhang

Platinum-based catalysts are widely used in catalysis and energy storage; however, their reaction activity is often compromised by the formation of large agglomerates during nanoparticle growth. In this study, we constructed “TiOx atomic walls” (TOAWalls) on multiwalled carbon nanotubes using a rotating chamber atomic layer deposition system, a method scalable to the tens-of-grams level. These uniformly dispersed TOAWalls effectively confine platinum nanoparticle growth, yielding highly dispersed platinum nanocrystals (∼2.4 nm) with an interparticle spacing of 1.8 nm, even at a tunable loading as low as 5.2 wt %. Concurrently, the TOAWalls induce electronic charge redistribution, thereby strengthening the coupling between the oxygen atoms and platinum metal sites. Attributed to the synergistic effect of atomic wall confinement and Pt–O coordination, this electrocatalyst exhibited stable performance over 100 h of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). When employed as a cathode in liquid zinc–air batteries, it yielded a power density of 277 mW cm–2 and sustained stable cycling performance for over 365 h, extending to 480 h in planar cell configurations. Capitalizing on the catalyst’s multifunctionality, we demonstrate an integrated photovoltaic–energy storage and hydrogen production system; this setup facilitates around-the-clock water-splitting by coupling flexible zinc–air batteries with photovoltaic power generation.

Excavated and dendritic Pt-Co nanocubes as efficient ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation electrocatalysts

Hongyu Du,Kai Wang,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

Noble metal electrocatalysts with excavated and dendritic architectures have recently attracted growing attention for their large accessible surface areas and high density of under-coordinated atoms. However, it is a tough challenge to avoid the atoms migrating to the corners and kinks and finally obtain the excavated structure, after the complicated interaction among multiple factors during the synthesis process, let alone the growth control of dendritic shape. Herein we demonstrate a facile strategy to synthesize Pt-Co nanocubes having excavated and dendritic structure (Pt-Co EDNCs). Specifically, the Pt-Co EDNC nanocrystal is composed of a deeply excavated nanocube and nanodendrites selectively protruding on the vertexes. Further electrocatalytic investigations showed that Pt-Co EDNCs exhibited enhanced catalytic properties towards the electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol compared with commercial Pt/C, which could be attributed to both its unique structure and the synergism between Pt and Co.

Quaternary ammonium-functionalized polymer for selective Pt(IV) recovery from waste-derived chloride leachates

Meng Cheng,Wenjing Liu,Chenxi Yang,Baoze Guo,Heqi Shen

Quaternary ammonium-functionalized polymer for selective Pt(IV) recovery. • Rapid Pt(IV) adsorption with equilibrium reached within 30 min. • High experimental Pt(IV) uptake capacity of 701.54 mg/g. • Preferential Pt(IV) capture in waste-derived chloride leachates. • More than 95% adsorption efficiency after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The covalent functionalization of polymeric matrices provides an effective strategy for tailoring their affinity toward specific metal species. In this work, chloromethylated polystyrene was functionalized with N , N -dimethylbutylamine through a one-step grafting reaction to construct a quaternary ammonium-functionalized polymer (CPR-DMBA) for selective Pt(IV) capture. CPR-DMBA exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics (equilibrium within 30 min), a high uptake capacity (701.54 mg/g), and preferential adsorption of Pt(IV) over competing metal ions in both synthetic solutions and waste-derived leachates from electronic waste and spent automotive catalysts. The adsorbent retained more than 95% adsorption efficiency after multiple cycles. Spectroscopic and theoretical analyses suggest that the adsorption process is governed primarily by electrostatic interactions and ion exchange, with additional contributions from weak non-covalent interactions. These results demonstrate that covalent functionalization of polystyrene with quaternary ammonium groups provides an effective route for constructing functional polymeric materials for selective capture of anionic metal complexes. Embedding Ultrafine and High-Content Pt Nanoparticles at Ceria Surface for Enhanced Thermal Stability

Jingshan S. Du,Ting Bian,Junjie Yu,Yingying Jiang,Xiaowei Wang,Yucong Yan,Yi Jiang,Chuanhong Jin,Hui Zhang,Deren Yang

Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles loaded on ceria (CeO 2 ) are promising nanostructured catalysts for many important reactions. However, such catalysts often suffer from thermal instability due to coarsening of Pt nanoparticles at elevated temperatures, especially for those with high Pt loading, which leads to severe deterioration of catalytic performances. Here, a facile strategy is developed to improve the thermal stability of ultrafine (1–2 nm)-Pt/CeO 2 catalysts with high Pt content (≈14 wt%) by partially embedding Pt nanoparticles at the surface of CeO 2 through the redox reaction at the solid–solution interface. Ex situ heating studies demonstrate the significant increase in thermal stability of such embedded nanostructures compared to the conventional loaded catalysts. The microscopic pathways for interparticle coarsening of Pt embedded or loaded on CeO 2 are further investigated by in situ electron microscopy at elevated temperatures. Their morphology and size evolution with heating temperature indicate that migration and coalescence of Pt nanoparticles are remarkably suppressed in the embedded structure up to about 450 °C, which may account for the improved thermal stability compared to the conventional loaded structure.
