A smartphone-assisted colorimetric paper sensor based on MnO2 nanozymes as oxidase mimetics for rapid evaluation of total antioxidant capacity in foods

Shi Ruirui,Wang Chao,Zhu Mingyue,Xie Chen,Cui Wenyu,Zhou Qing

Manganese dioxide nanozymes (MnO 2 -zymes) with excellent oxidase-like properties were synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method. A rapid, portable smartphone-assisted colorimetric paper sensor based on MnO 2 -zymes/TMB chromogenic system was developed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) evaluation. The MnO 2 -zymes immediately catalyzed the oxidation of colorless TMB to generate blue oxidation products (oxTMB), while antioxidants can quickly reduce oxTMB to TMB, causing noticeable fading of the blue color. Integrated with a smartphone-based RGB mode, ascorbic acid (AA) was quantified in the range 2.5–125.00 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.03 μM. Furthermore, using AA as a model analyte, the paper sensor was successfully applied to evaluate TAC in fruits and beverages, with results closely matching those obtained from a microplate reader-assisted colorimetric sensor and an ABTS free radical scavenging capacity assay kit. This high-performance sensor is simple, rapid, and accurate, showing great potential in practical application for TAC determination. Graphical

Non-leakage and High Stretchable Sheath–Core Structure Liquid Metal-Based Strain-Sensing Fiber for Smart Wearable

Yajuan Zhang,Ruining Wang,Runjun Sun,Jing Deng,Haibing Guo

Recently, the ever-increasing demand for wearable electronics has significantly accelerated the development of flexible strain sensors. Liquid metal exhibits potential applications in smart wearable devices because of its high electrical conductivity and room temperature fluidity. However, its applications are limited by challenges in terms of issues in achieving liquid metal (LM) non-leakage, wide detection range, and high conductivity simultaneously. Herein, we developed a non-leakage and high stretchable sheath–core structure liquid metal-based strain-sensing fiber and, in particular, unique conductive pathways were constructed within core fibers featuring a microporous structure, where gallium-based liquid metals (LM) formed islands, and carboxyl carbon nanotubes (CNTs) served as bridges under large strains. This structure ensures the stable containment of liquid metal (LM) without any leakage. Through the cooperative interaction between carboxyl carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and liquid metal (LM), the composite fiber SA@LM-CNT achieves an impressive detection range of up to 190%, high conductivity of 3333.3 S/m, and a Young’s modulus of 0.94 MPa. Moreover, it demonstrates stable performance over more than 10,000 cycles. Lastly, leveraging semi-automated loom, this fiber strain sensor can be seamlessly integrated into textiles to conformally track various human body movements. This work presents a novel strategy for fabricating LM-based strain-sensing fibers without leakage, aiming to achieve both liquid metal leakage prevention and high stretchability simultaneously.

TiNbC MXene cathode for high-performance aluminum-ion batteries

Lin Qicai,Jin Junjie,Jiang Yongkang,Sheng Guan,Schwingenschlögl Udo,Wu Junwei,Tu Shaobo,Liu Xingjun,Zhang Xixiang

Al-ion batteries (AIBs) have emerged as a promising energy storage technology due to their high theoretical capacity, cost-effectiveness, and superior safety. However, the lack of stable and efficient cathode materials capable of reversible Al-complex ion (e.g., [AlCl 4 ] − ) insertion/extraction remains a critical challenge. In this work, we developed TiNbCT x MXene as a high-performance cathode material for AIBs, achieving remarkable capacity and cycling stability. Unlike symmetric-structured Ti 2 CT x , the TiNbCT x cathode leverages synergistic Ti–Nb bimetallic effects to enhance the electronic conductivity and electrochemical activity. Here we show, TiNbCT x delivers a high reversible capacity of 194 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 A·g −1 with 800-cycle stability. Through combined experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we elucidate the kinetic mechanisms of energy storage, offering fundamental insights for the rational design of advanced cathode materials in AIBs.

Orchestrated Cu2+-coordinated tetracycline-porphyrin self-assembly remodels tumor microenvironment for photo-enhanced immuno-chemodynamic therapy

Sun Xianbin,Wang Xinyi,Li Xudong,Wang Ya,Xu Ruofei,Shen Xinyi,Tan Ding,Liao Jingjing,Chen Haijun,Gao Yu,Zheng Jianping

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based nanodynamic therapy is emerging as a promising approach for tumor treatment, particularly in eliciting immune responses for tumor immunotherapy. Nevertheless, the complex tumor microenvironment (TME) and the constraints of current sensitizers substantially compromise therapeutic efficacy. To address these challenges, we developed a rationally designed nanoplatform (LP/CuTT) through lipoic acid-modified orchestrated Cu²⁺-coordinated tetracycline-porphyrin self-assembly, to precisely remodel the immunosuppressive TME while potentiating antitumor immunotherapy via a novel photo-enhanced chemodynamic therapy (CDT) strategy. In vitro studies demonstrated that LP/CuTT-mediated photo-enhanced CDT effectively promoted concurrent apoptosis and cuproptosis in B16-F10 melanoma cells, coupled with robust induction of immunogenic cell death (ICD). Mechanistic investigations revealed that LP/CuTT drives macrophage polarization from tumor-promoting M2 to antitumor M1 phenotypes while promoting dendritic cell (DC) maturation, thereby orchestrating potent antitumor immune responses. In vivo evaluations showed preferential tumor accumulation of LP/CuTT, correlating with substantial ROS generation at tumor sites and remarkable therapeutic outcomes. Quantitative assessments further demonstrated elevated M1 macrophage infiltration in both tumor and splenic tissues, accompanied by enhanced CD8+ and CD4+ T cell recruitment. These findings provide key insights into developing orchestrated metal-coordinated nanotherapeutics by repurposing existing therapeutic agents, enabling the design of multifunctional systems that integrate efficient chemodynamic activity, TME remodeling, and immune activation for effective nanodynamic therapy.

Electronically tailored metal-ion-chelation strategy promotes ionic liquid catalysis at near-ambient condition

Zhang Tianhao,Tian Yuan,Zhang Chong,Yan Tingting,Yan Hanwen,Zhang Guoliang,Li Jie,Li Zengxi,Wang Gang,Li Chunshan,Zhang Suojiang

Electronic properties of active sites profoundly influence catalytic production of value-added chemicals; however, rational description and modulation is still a significant challenge. Herein, we propose an effective metal-ion-chelation strategy guided by density functional theory prediction and in situ Raman observation to structurally tailor and quantitatively correlate the electronic properties of active sites in ionic liquid. Comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations, in combination with electronic properties–performance correlations, reveal the electronic peculiarity of nitrogen and oxygen centers can be controllably restructured for remarkable improvement of catalytic performance at near-ambient condition. The turnover frequency is increased by two folds with deactivation rate suppressed by more than one half, while the kilogram-scaled recycling pilot achieves similar performance for the probe methacrolein synthesis. This strategy further exhibits excellent applicability and tolerance in other substrates with representative functional groups. Our work expresses the significance of electronic properties and provides a valid regulation approach for ionic liquid catalysis.

Pharmacokinetic variability of 20(S)-protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides Rb1, rd, and compound K from Korean red ginseng in experimental rodents

Jeong Ji-Soo,Kim Jeong-Won,Kim Jin-Hwa,Kim Chang-Yeop,Chung Eun-Hye,Boo So-Young,Giorgi Mario,Ko Je-Won,Kim Tae-Won

Korean red ginseng (KRG, Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) contains ginsenosides, which are metabolized into active metabolites with various pharmacological effects. This study assessed the in vivo exposure and accumulation of ginsenosides following single and repeated administration of KRG and its active ingredient, compound K, in experimental rodents. In Study 1, rats received KRG (2 g/kg) orally as a single dose or for 2, 4, and 8 wks. Repeated administration increased the maximum plasma concentrations (C max ) of ginsenosides Rb1 and Rd compared to a single dose (Rb: 23.9 to 68.3 ng/mL; Rd: 8.5 to 30.8 ng/mL over 8 wks). Compound K was detected at 2.9 and 2.3 ng/mL of C max after 4 and 8 wks of continuous KRG administration, with no significant differences. In Study 2, oral administration of compound K (5 or 10 mg/kg) in rats resulted in accumulation factors of 4 and 7, respectively. Study 3 evaluated the oral bioavailability of compound K in mice (intravenous, 2 mg/kg; oral, 10 mg/kg), estimating it at approximately 12%. Additionally, network pharmacology and molecular docking simulation studies supported the clinical potential of compound K against inflammation-related diseases. These findings suggest that for substances like KRG, which undergo in vivo metabolic conversion after administration, repeated KRG administration alters pharmacokinetic profiles and should be taken into consideration in its application.

Design and predictive modeling of a veterinary drug detection sensor in paddy field water based on artificial neural networks

Huang Junshi,Huang Bolin,Huang Shuanggen,Wang Xiaobin,Zhao Jinhui

For rapid real-time detection of veterinary drug residues in paddy field water, we developed a novel sensor system using interdigitated electrodes as detection probes and the STM32F405RGT6 microcontroller as the core processing unit. The hardware architecture integrates multiple functional modules including excitation signal generation, signal detection, signal processing, LoRa coupled with 4G wireless communication, voltage regulation, and lithium battery charging. The system acquires three types of measurement data (amplitude ratio, phase difference, and their combination) from water samples containing sulfamethazine, ofloxacin, doxycycline hydrochloride and tetracycline hydrochloride across a broad frequency spectrum from 200 Hz to 100 MHz. Through Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) for feature selection and artificial neural network modeling, we established a multi-input multi-output concentration prediction model. Comparative analysis demonstrated superior performance when using phase difference data as model input, achieving prediction coefficients of determination (R 2 ) between 0.7831 and 0.8713 with root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) ranging from 22.0759 to 28.1526 mg/L. Studies showed that this sensor device could effectively detect the contents of four veterinary drugs, namely sulfamethazine, doxycycline hydrochloride, ofloxacin, and tetracycline hydrochloride, in paddy field water, thus realizing the rapid and real-time monitoring of veterinary drugs in paddy field water.

Homoplantaginin protects pancreatic tissue in severe acute pancreatitis mice via inhibiting ferroptosis by modulating the circDNMT3B/miR-20b-5p/SLC7A11 axis

Teng Xiao,Sheng Shanfeng,Pan Mingyuan,Li Yuyang,Li Zheng

Background Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a critical gastrointestinal disorder associated with high mortality. Dysregulated ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death, is recognized as a pivotal mechanism driving SAP progression. Although Homoplantaginin (Homo) exhibits notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, its specific role in modulating ferroptosis during SAP remains unclear. Objective To investigate whether Homo alleviates SAP by inhibiting ferroptosis via the circDNMT3B/miR-20b-5p/SLC7A11 axis. Methods C57BL/6 mice ( n  = 10 per group) were randomly allocated into nine groups, including normal control, SAP model, and various intervention groups involving Homo treatment, circDNMT3B knockdown, and miR-20b-5p inhibition. SAP was induced via caerulein and LPS injections. Assessments included histopathological evaluation, serum analysis (amylase, cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18), measurement of ferroptosis markers (MDA, GSH, tissue iron), Western blotting for ferroptosis-related proteins (ACSL4, COX-2, SLC7A11, GPX4), and qRT-PCR for gene expression. The targeting relationship between miR-20b-5p and SLC7A11 was validated by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Results SAP mice demonstrated severe pancreatic injury and hallmarks of ferroptosis, including elevated inflammation, iron accumulation, increased ACSL4/COX-2 expression, and upregulation of miR-20b-5p, alongside suppressed SLC7A11 and GPX4. Homo treatment significantly mitigated pancreatic damage and reversed these ferroptosis-related changes. CircDNMT3B knockdown exacerbated SAP severity and attenuated the protective effect of Homo, indicating its dependence on circDNMT3B. Furthermore, the detrimental effects of circDNMT3B knockdown were partially rescued by concurrent inhibition of miR-20b-5p, suggesting that miR-20b-5p acts downstream of circDNMT3B within the protective pathway mediated by Homo. The dual-luciferase assay confirmed miR-20b-5p directly targets SLC7A11. Conclusion Our study demonstrates that Homo protects against SAP primarily by suppressing ferroptosis. Mechanistically, Homo upregulates circDNMT3B, which sequesters miR-20b-5p, thereby relieving its repression of SLC7A11, which in turn supports the GPX4-mediated antioxidant defense. These findings elucidate a novel molecular pathway in SAP-associated ferroptosis and highlight the circDNMT3B/miR-20b-5p/SLC7A11 axis as a promising therapeutic target.

Effect of Ce doping on the structure and magnetic properties of manganese-zinc ferrite

Wang Qing,Li Jie,Zhang Xinfang,Liu Hui,Zhu Yuekang,Zhang Yueyang,An Xiang

The rapid advancement of high-frequency electronic devices has raised growing public concern regarding electromagnetic pollution, leading to an urgent demand for magnetic materials that exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties alongside low energy loss. In this study, cerium-doped manganese-zinc spinel ferrite Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Ce x Fe 2- x O 4 ( x  = 0.000 ~ 0.025) was synthesized using microwave-assisted solid-state sintering. The influence of cerium doping on the structural, microstructural, and magnetic properties of the material was systematically investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and precision impedance analysis (LCR). The results demonstrate that a single-phase manganese-zinc ferrite structure is maintained when the rare earth doping level is x  ≤ 0.015. With increasing Ce content, the unit cell volume expands due to the incorporation of larger Ce 3+ ions into the lattice. The average grain size of the sintered samples ranges from 2.7 to 3.6  μ m. FTIR analysis reveals two characteristic absorption bands corresponding to Fe 3+ –O 2− vibrations, located between 548.74 and 554.53 cm −1 (ν 1 ) and 418.55 cm −1 and 420.48 cm −1 (ν 2 ), respectively, confirming the formation of the spinel ferrite structure. Magnetic measurements show that saturation magnetization and coercivity reach optimal values at a doping concentration of x  = 0.020, with saturation magnetization attaining 73.14 emu/g and coercivity measuring 5.20 Oe. LCR impedance analysis indicates that cerium doping effectively suppresses the rate of increase of the magnetic loss tangent (tan  δ ) with frequency. This improvement is attributed to the suppression of eddy current effects, resulting in significantly reduced eddy current losses, thereby enhancing the material’s suitability for high-frequency applications.

Dual-Modulated Natural Skin-Derived Composite for On-Demand Personal Thermal Management and Self-powered Motion Monitoring

Gao Lu,Bao Yan,An Wen,Zhu Xiaofeng,Yu Sike,Liu Chao,Liang Ting,Zhang Wenbo,Ma Jianzhong

Within the framework of smart health, personal thermal management wearables that combine radiative cooling and heating are essential for countering dynamic temperature regulations. However, the integration of motion monitoring and activity analysis functionalities into such systems for extended outdoor use remains challenging. Herein, a dual-modulated natural skin-derived composite (DM-Skin) was tailored via in situ electrospinning of a polyurethane/SiO 2 fibrous membrane (RCFM) and vapor-deposition polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) on both sides of a natural skin-derived material (N-Skin), achieving switchable solar modulation that combines radiative cooling and heating. DM-Skin demonstrated exceptional thermal regulation with 19.3 °C cooling and 14.3 °C heating under 980 W·m −2 solar irradiance, attributed to the high solar reflectivity (94%) and mid-infrared emissivity (96%) of the cooling side, and strong solar absorptivity (93%) of the heating side. The net cooling power and heating power reached 99.2 W/m 2 and 770.8 W/m 2 . With the help of enhanced triboelectric charge modulation, DM-Skin triboelectric nanogenerator gained high output performance with an open-circuit voltage of 168.5 V, a short-circuit current of 4.2 μA, and a transfer charge of 59.2 nC, enabling self-powered operation of small electronics, and human motion monitoring. This performance originated from the RCFM, which enhanced charge generation, and the regional incorporation of PPy in N-Skin improved the charge capture and storage capacity. DM-Skin maintained excellent breathability, softness, and mechanical properties comparable to those of conventional leather. This study contributes to the development of next-generation wearable devices that provide satisfactory thermal comfort and human health monitoring. Graphical

Tough transparent glass ceramics for muti-mode programmable dynamic tunable persistent luminescence via phase engineering

Wu Yixi,Li Xinkuo,Ruan Chao,Sun Ke,Qiu Jianrong,Tan Dezhi

Realizing multi-mode programmable dynamic tunable persistent luminescence within a single solid is promising for multi-dimensional information storage and encryption applications. However, coupling luminescent centers with differentiated defect states remains a challenge. Here we report transparent glass ceramics that exhibit photo/thermally dynamic tunable afterglow. A lithium-ion doping-assisted phase separation principle is developed to control the precipitation of defective non-stoichiometric nanocrystals (Zn 1.7 SiO 4 : Li) in glass matrix, constructing a biphasic microenvironment with differentiated defect states. The persistent luminescence color can be manipulated by simultaneously engineering the distributions of Mn 2+ activators in the amorphous glass matrix and nanocrystals, and the mechanism is discussed. The developed transparent composites exhibit excellent hardness of up to 10 gigapascal and high thermal stability, which is applicable for harsh conditions. This work pioneers a strategy for modulating dynamic afterglow in a single solid and inspires more potential applications in muti-dimensional information storage and encryption.

High-quality single crystalline 2H-NbSe2 grown by iodine-assisted chemical vapor transport

Li Zhi-Yue,Li Long-Xiang,Xie Yi-Qin,Sun Hui,Lu Si-Rong,Bao Chun-Hao,Zhang Han,Chen Ting-Yong

Two-dimensional materials are attractive in electronics, energy and optics due to their fascinating physical properties. Appropriate fabrication methods and optimized process parameters are critical for improving crystal quality and achieving precise control over the structure and properties of these materials. Here, 2H-NbSe 2 single crystals were synthesized via a chemical vapor transport (CVT) process using iodine as the transport agent in a dual-zone tube furnace. The structural, chemical compositions, electrical, and magneto-transport properties of the synthesized crystals were comprehensively investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that the crystals were well-crystallized in a single-phase hexagonal lattice configuration, consistent with the typical van der Waals layered characteristics. The Raman spectra displayed characteristic peaks for NbSe 2 . The atomic ratio of Nb: Se in the crystals was approximately 1:2. The residual resistivity ratio ( RRR ) value (18), transition temperature ( T C ≈ 7 K) and transition width (Δ T ) of 0.26 K obtained from temperature-dependent resistance measurements indicate good crystal quality. Magneto-transport measurements revealed a distinct anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field directions, resulting in typically different upper critical fields ( H c 2 ). This work presents a straightforward and effective iodine-assisted CVT method for growing high-quality NbSe₂ crystals, offering fundamental and technological significance for the growth and application of two-dimensional materials.
