A superhydrophobic ZnAl–layered double hydroxide (LDH)–La film was prepared by a hydrothermal method and further modification by laurate anions in this work. Comprehensive characterizations of this film were performed in terms of morphology, composition, structure, roughness, and wettability by scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy. The long-term corrosion protection effect of this superhydrophobic film was investigated deeply by monitoring the changes of the electrochemical impedance spectra for a long time of up to a month in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. In the meantime, the changes of the contact angle were also recorded with the evolution of the immersion time. The result indicated that the stable superhydrophobic ZnAl–LDH–La film was able to provide efficient protection for the underlying Al substrate for a long time. In addition, the capability of the superhydrophobic surface against harsh conditions, including chemical damages and physical damages, was emphatically investigated. It was found that the superhydrophobic surface was chemically stable toward acid (pH ≥ 3), alkali, and heating, and it also exhibited high ultraviolet (UV) radiation resistance. This superhydrophobic coating maintained superhydrophobicity for 7 days of radiation in an UV chamber equipped with a 40 W UV lamp (λ = 254 nm), indicating superior ability of adapting to outdoor environment. This comprehensive investigation of the superhydrophobic ZnAl–LDH–La film is considerably helpful for researchers and engineers to get deep insight into its potential for practical applications in the field of corrosion and protection.

Bulk Al-doped carboxymethyl cellulose aerogels were obtained via a facile slow-gel method and freeze-drying technology. In this method, the cross-linker Al 3+ was released slowly and completely with enough d -(+)-gluconic acid δ -lactone as a sustained-release agent. Depended on controlled releasing of Al 3+ , the reaction speed between Al 3+ and carboxyl groups was controlled and Al 3+ was well-distributed in the aerogels. The coordination type between Al 3+ and carboxymethyl cellulose was the bidentate bridging coordination. By adjusting the amount of Al 3+ and the degree of substitution of carboxymethyl cellulose, interconnected network and closely packed sheet-like structure presented, respectively. According to the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, the aerogels were a kind of mesoporous material with pore blocking or cavitation. In addition, the aerogels exhibited outstanding weight-bearing capacity and excellent flame retardancy. This work provided a valuable reference for doping metal ions into polysaccharide aerogels and expanding the application fields of aerogels.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) are complementary techniques, and both provide fingerprint structural information on various materials with a high sensitivity. Herein, Zn–Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are proposed for the first time as highly sensitive and uniform substrates for both SERS and SEIRA. Zn–Al LDHs show a remarkable SERS effect with an enhancement factor (EF) as high as 1.637 × 104 by using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as the probe molecule, where the charge transfer and hydrogen bonds are believed to result in the SERS effect. Interestingly, Zn–Al LDHs also exhibit SEIRA by using 4-methoxybenzenethiol (4-MTP), where the resultant substrates possess excellent long-term stability. This study not only presents a facile route to fabricate LDH materials, but also provides a novel substrate that can be used in both SERS and SEIRA.

The blue band optical absorption and green luminescence of ZnO phosphors doping with aluminum are systematic studied. The Al content is varied from 0.01 at.% to 1 at.%. SEM images illustrated that Al doping can effectively suppress the ZnO grain growth. XRD results clearly manifest that the Al solubility limit in ZnO is around 0.1 at.%. It is also found that the E 1 (LO) vibration mode in the Raman spectra exhibits a good correlation with the blue band optical absorption and green photoluminescence. The results revealed that both V O 0 and V O + can give rise to the E 1 (LO) vibration mode. We conclude that the V O and O i defects are the dominant reason of the green photoluminescence in ZnO phosphors, in oxygen-deficient and oxygen-rich conditions, respectively.

The electrochemical reduction of Nd(III) was investigated on an inert W and a liquid Al electrode in molten NaCl–KCl eutectic salt. On both W and liquid Al electrodes, the reduction of Nd(III) ions to Nd(0) metal occurred in a single reaction step, which avoids the corrosion reaction: 2Nd(III) + Nd → 3Nd(II). Therefore, corrosion of Nd metal in this molten chloride media is not expected. The co-reduction behavior of Nd(III) and Al(III) ions was studied on a W electrode in NaCl–KCl–AlCl3–NdCl3 melts. Five kinds of Al–Nd intermetallic compound were detected via cyclic voltammetry and open circuit chronopotentiometry. Intermittent galvanostatic electrolysis was employed on liquid Al electrodes to extract Nd in the form of Al–Nd alloys in NaCl–KCl–NdCl3 melts. Nd, AlNd3, Al2Nd, and AlNd phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). With the increase of electrolytic time, the content of Nd-rich Al–Nd intermetallic compounds in the Al–Nd alloy increased. The morphology and micro-zone chemical analysis of the deposits were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and the Al11Nd3 phase was confirmed by EDS analysis.

A polymer-encapsulated colorful Al pigment (PCAP) for fabric coatings was successfully prepared by a combined sol–gel spray drying assisted in situ polymerization method, and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance and ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of the coated fabrics were investigated. TG-DSC, SEM, and antisolvent test results proved that the reactive dyes were chemically attached to KH-550 modified Al pigment via a covalent bond. The PCAP was stable in strong alkaline (pH 12) or acidic (pH 1) conditions. The NIR reflectance and ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of PCAP coated cotton fabrics were 80.05% and 290.76, respectively, when the mass ratio of monomer to colorful Al pigment was 1:10 with the coating thickness of 50 μm. PCAP coated fabrics showed excellent color strength, and good washing and rubbing fastness with a relatively good handle.

A series of CNT@MIL-68(Al) composites with different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loadings have been synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, PXRD, FT-IR, TGA, and N 2 adsorption. As evidenced from SEM and TEM images, the incorporation of CNTs can result in better dispersity of MIL-68(Al) in composites and smaller particle size than pure MIL-68(Al). Adding appropriate amounts of CNTs increases both the BET surface areas and the total volume of small micorpores (<16 Å), leading to largely improved performance of adsorptive removal of phenol from aqueous solution. In the industrial concentration range of phenol, the adsorption capacity of 0.75% CNT@MIL-68(Al) was improved up to 188.7% compared with the pristine MIL-68(Al), possibly due to the increase of small micropores introduced by the incorporation of CNTs. Regeneration experiments demonstrated that the composites are stable with good regenerability for at least five cycles. This work shows that the composites formed by the combination of CNTs and MOFs may find promising applications in liquid phase adsorption.

For human health and environmental protection, removal of formaldehyde (HCHO) has become a hot topic, and completely catalytic oxidation at room temperature has been identified as one of the efficient routes for solving this problem. Recently, it has been reported that zeolite-supported Pt catalysts are active for HCHO oxidation at low temperatures, but they are still unable to completely oxidize HCHO at room temperature. To enhance the activity, it has been suggested to increase the Pt dispersion and acidic density in the zeolite-supported Pt catalysts. We therefore chose Al-rich Beta as a zeolite support because abundant aluminum species in the zeolite framework are advantageous for increasing acidic density through ion-exchange of protons and for improving Pt metal dispersion through the metal-zeolite interaction by increasing the negative charge of the zeolite framework with positively charged metal ions. As we expected, the Al-rich Beta zeolite supported platinum catalyst is very active, giving complete oxidation of HCHO at room temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the complete oxidation of HCHO at room temperature over a zeolite-supported noble metal catalyst has been realized. In addition to its extraordinary activity, this catalyst is also very stable and selective. The strategy of designing zeolite-supported noble metal catalysts might offer an alternative way to develop highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the removal of air pollutants.

We reported a facile route for the fabrication of Al-doped TiO 2 nanostructure for supercapacitor electrode materials through an in-situ oxidation of Ti–8Al alloy. Ti–8Al alloy was prepared through solidification route. After high-temperature oxidation, rod-like and wall-like Al-doped TiO 2 composites were formed on the surface of Ti–8Al alloy flake. This kind of novel structure consisted of numerous nanorods and nanosheets, exhibiting large open space. When applied for supercapacitor, Al-doped TiO 2 composites electrode materials exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. After oxidation at 650 °C for 100 h, the electrode can deliver the highest capacitance of 4650 μF cm −2 at the current density of 10 μA cm −2 as well as long-term cycling stability of 98.5% of the initial specific areal capacitance after 6000 cycles.

High thermal conductive Al 2 O 3 @Al composite synthesized via metallic Al powders corrosion method has been applied as support for preparing Co/Al 2 O 3 @Al catalyst for high exothermic Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The prepared Al 2 O 3 @Al composite is a hierarchical macro-mesoporous structure and consist of two parts, namely the inner metallic Al and the outer Al 2 O 3 with two kinds of morphologies. Increasing the concentration of the corrosive NaOH or extending the corrosion time could increase the specific surface area of the composite. For the prepared Co/Al 2 O 3 @Al, Co 3 O 4 phase is located on the outer plate-like Al 2 O 3 layer. The Co/Al-0.03-20 possesses higher CO conversion and C 5+ selectivity due to the appropriate cobalt reducibility, dispersion and high thermal conductivity . The thermal conductive coefficient of Co/Al 2 O 3 @Al catalysts is 13–98 times of conventional Co/Al 2 O 3 . Compared to Co/Al 2 O 3 , the Co/Al 2 O 3 @Al shows higher CO conversion and C 5+ selectivity as well as lower CH 4 and CO 2 selectivity, which is attributed to the macro-mesoporous structure and high thermal conductivity. In addition, because of the high thermal conductivity, no heat disperser should be used and a homogeneous temperature gradient maintains within the catalyst bed for Co/Al 2 O 3 @Al.

This study reports the fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using immersion precipitation phase inversion for promising application in desalination of dye solutions. Aromatic poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) is used as the polymer material, and the metal–organic framework MIL-53(Al) is added to develop integrally skinned asymmetric membranes. Successful dispersion of MIL-53(Al) particles into the membrane-separating layer is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The optimum performance of the membranes is obtained at 0.5 wt % MIL-53(Al) concentration. In particular, the M-0.5 membrane is planned for use in separating dye/salt aqueous mixtures. It is observed that the M-0.5 membrane has a rejection for NaCl and Na2SO4 below 11% and 37%, respectively, in mixed salt/dye solutions. Additionally, the M-0.5 membrane is found to have a rejection rate of 83.9%, 98.3%, and 99.8% for nitroso-R salt, xylenol orange, and ponceau S, respectively, in mixed Na2SO4/dye solutions. The rejection rate for Na2SO4 is lower than that of some commercial nanofiltration membranes (NF90, NF270, and DK). The membrane is promising for dye desalination in industrial-scale applications.

Aluminum alloys are vulnerable to penetrating and peeling failures in seawater and preparing a barrier coating to isolate the substrate from corrosive medium is an effective anticorrosion method. Inspired by the lotus leaves effect, a wetting alloy surface with enhanced anticorrosion behavior has been prepared via etch, deposition, and low-surface-energy modification. Results indicate that excellent superamphiphobicity has been achieved after the modification of the constructed hierarchical labyrinth-like microstructures and dendritic nanostructures. The as-prepared surface is also found with good chemical stability and mechanical durability. Furthermore, superior anticorrosion behaviors of the resultant samples in seawater are investigated by electrochemical measurements. Due to trapped air in micro/nanostructures, the newly presented solid-air-liquid contacting interface can help to resist the seawater penetration by greatly reducing the interface interaction between corrosive ions and the superamphiphobic surface. Finally, an optimized two-layer perceptron artificial neural network is set up to model and predict the cause-and-effect relationship between preparation conditions and the anticorrosion parameters. This work provides a great potential to extend the applications of aluminum alloys especially in marine engineering fields.
