Synthesis of four coordination polymers with Zn(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), or Co(II) ions and their application for fluorescence sensing toward nitenpyram, imidacloprid, and vitamin B2

Gao-Sheng Zhu,Yu-Meng Wei,Dan Wang,Xuan-Zu Guo,Long Li,Yan-Ying Zheng,Yi Jia,Bao-Yi Yu,Qiao-Xia Shang

Four new Zn(II)-, Cd(II)-, Mn(II)-, and Co(II) - based 1D to 2D coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesized from metal salts and 1,4-di(1-imidazol-1-yl)naphthalene (DIN) ligand via the coordination reaction under hydrothermal conditions with quantitative yields , namely, [Zn(SO 4 )(DIN)(H 2 O)] ( CP-1 ), [Cd(NO 3 ) 2 (DIN)] ( CP-2 ), [Mn(SO 4 )(DIN)(H 2 O) 3 ] ( CP-3 ), and [Co(NO 3 ) 2 (DIN) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] ( CP-4 ). The CPs were analyzed and characterized using FT-IR, Elemental Analysis , TGA , SC-XRD, and PXRD . CP-1 was selected as a model sensor for fluorescence detection , and the sensor exhibited high quenching rates at two excitation wavelengths of λ ex  = 230 and 290 nm, and at a single emission wavelength of λ em  = 350 nm. At these two different excitation wavelengths, CP-1 behaved differently during the sensing of pesticides, and the highest quenching rate was achieved by the sensor for nitenpyram ( λ ex  = 230 nm) and imidacloprid ( λ ex  = 290 nm). Furthermore, during the sensing of vitamins, CP-1 encountered a strong quenching effect toward vitamin B2 . During the sensing processes, the inner filter effect (for nitenpyram , imidacloprid , and vitamin B2), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (for nitenpyram, imidacloprid, and vitamin B2), and photo-induced electron transfer (for vitamin B2) were the mechanisms responsible for fluorescence quenching .

A combination strategy of HPLC and boric acid modified β-CD polymer for super-efficiently separating chiral substances with O/N atoms in chiral and/or adjacent carbons

Xiaoqian Yuan,Yuchen Cui,Yaqin Nan,Ruijun Tang,Xinru Wang,Yanmei Xu,Xinghua Jin,Yiwen Wang,Ding Cheng,Youxin Li

Background Cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives have been widely used as chiral selectors in HPLC. However, many derivatized CDs lack specificity for certain drugs and often exhibit limited resolution. Furthermore, their synthesis typically involves complex multi-step procedures, hindering scalability and cost-efficiency. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to develop a simple and scalable boric acid-modified β-cyclodextrin polymer (BA-β-CDP), targeting chiral substances with O/N atoms in chiral and/or adjacent carbons. Results BA-β-CDP was synthesized on a large scale using inexpensive reagents and a random substitution strategy, avoiding tedious protection-purification steps. Structural and chromatographic compatibility was confirmed by nine characterization techniques. In HPLC using the chiral mobile-phase additive (CMPA) method, BA-β-CDP enabled the efficient separation of 25 racemates. Among them, 24 achieved complete or baseline separation, and 10 exhibited resolution (Rs) values > 10. Typical cases included bisoprolol (Rs = 48.19), propranolol (Rs = 45.50), chlorpheniramine (Rs = 38.36), and metoprolol (Rs = 20.26). Additionally, the material demonstrated excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility, recyclability, and reusability. Significance and novelty This work presents a practical and cost-effective chiral selector. The synergistic mechanism offers strong and specific recognition toward chiral substances with O/N atoms in chiral and/or adjacent carbons. This approach represents a novel strategy for efficient and economical HPLC-based enantioseparation using widely accessible materials and methods.

Simultaneous preconcentration and penta-elemental speciation analysis of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb by online solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Pingxiu Zeng,Zhenzhen Ma,Hongmei Hu,Meiying Ye,Yuanchao Wang,Heyong Cheng

Species-specific toxic, metabolic, and bioavailable properties of commonly coexisting metal(loid)s—particularly Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb—necessitate their speciation analysis. Because of the complexity and diversity in chemical form, concentration (from picograms to milligrams per liter), interactions, and sample matrix, multi-elemental speciation methods are preferred over traditional mono-elemental speciation methods. However, current multi-elemental speciation methods have primarily associated with only two metal(loid)s. Herein, we developed an efficient, sensitive, inexpensive, and green methodology for the simultaneous penta-elemental speciation analysis of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb using high-performance liquid chromatography combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and online solid-phase extraction (SPE) preconcentration. Food samples were extracted with a mixture of 0.1 M HNO 3 and 5 mM L -cysteine (Cys), chosen among 10 extractants for its good extraction efficiency, low noise, and minimal chromatographic interference. The proposed method offered a short analysis time (10 min for separation and 2 min for enrichment), excellent linearity (R 2 > 0.995), low detection limits (0.02 −0.12 μg L −1 in SPE-free mode; 0.02 −3.2 ng L −1 with online SPE), high precision (0.2 −2.4 %), and good recovery (81 −117 %) using an aqueous mobile phase of 5 mM tetrabutylammonium hydroxide + 5 mM Cys (pH 4.7). This demonstrates its good applicability to both food and water samples. Despite the incompatibility of Cr(VI) with As(III) and Cys, the proposed method excels in analytical, economic, and environmental aspects (maximizing the number of metal(loid)s within minimized analytical time using aqueous mobile phases), showing significant potential for a wide range of food, environmental, and biological samples.

Competitive adsorption of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from acid mine drainage with zero-valent iron/phosphoric titanium dioxide: XPS qualitative analyses and DFT quantitative calculations

Jingjing Ren,Liuchun Zheng,Yaoming Su,Peipei Meng,Qianya Zhou,Hao Zeng,Tao Zhang,Huajian Yu

In order to treat heavy metal pollutants in acid mine drainage, zero-valent iron/phosphoric titanium dioxide (PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI) was developed with phosphoric acid treatment and loading of zero valent iron and showed excellent adsorption of heavy metals. PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI greatly improved the adsorption capacity for the targeted heavy metal Cd(II) (308 mg·g −1 for PTO-3nZVI and 206 mg·g −1 for PTO-nZVI) through complexation and coprecipitation. Additionally, competitive adsorption occurred between Cd(II) and coexisting heavy metal ions (Pb(II) and Cu(II)), resulting in different adsorption effects for PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI, and their adsorption efficiencies decreased in the order Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II) for PTO-3nZVI and Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) for PTO-nZVI. Based on these two aspects, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analyses and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to characterize the adsorption behaviors of PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI. In particular, competitive relationships for different heavy metals were clearly revealed by binding energies, Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs) analyses, electrostatic potentials, and total potential and differential charge analyses of adsorption sites, binding sites and binding strengths.

Citric acid modified β-cyclodextrin for the synthesis of water-stable and recoverable CD-MOF with enhanced adsorption sites: Efficient removal of Congo red and copper ions from wastewater

Yubin Zhang,Ling Zhang,Nana Wang,Chao Feng,Qiang Zhang,Jian Yu,Yang Jiao,Yanchao Xu,Jianrong Chen

Due to the complexity of wastewater pollutants and their adverse effects on human health and the environment, there is an urgent need for the development of a recyclable adsorbent capable of removing both dyes and heavy metals. In this study, citric acid modification β-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CA-β-CD-MOF) was synthesized by chemical grafting followed by vapor diffusion methods. The concentration, dosage, and pH of citric acid had a certain impact on the adsorption effect of the adsorbent. The adsorption capacities for the anionic dye Congo red (CR) and copper ions (Cu 2+ ) were as high as 900.9 and 287.4 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process could be well described by the Langmuir isothermal model. The adsorption kinetics of CR and Cu 2+ conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption process was a heat absorption and spontaneous process. The combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results proves that electrostatic interaction is the adsorption mechanism of CR. The adsorption of Cu 2+ was attributed to the complexation between the carboxyl group on citric acid (CA) and Cu 2+ . The CA-β-CD-MOF we prepared has good adsorption performance and recyclability and has great potential in removing Congo red and copper ions from wastewater.

Functionality of wheat straw-derived biochar enhanced its efficiency for actively capping Cd and Pb in contaminated water and soil matrices: Insights through batch adsorption and flow-through experiments

Yasir Hamid,Yonglong Chen,Qiang Lin,Muhammad Haris,Muhammad Usman,Muhammad Saqib Rashid,Ioannis Anastopoulos,Bilal Hussain,Hayssam M. Ali,Fakhir Hannan,Xianyuan Yin,Xiaoe Yang

The impact of functionality of biochar on pressing environmental issue of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) co-contamination in simultaneous soil and water systems has not sufficiently reported. This study investigated the impact of Fe- and Mg-functionalized wheat straw biochar (Fe-WSBC and Mg-WSBC) on Cd and Pb adsorption/immobilization through batch sorption and column leaching trials. Importantly, Fe-WSBC was more effective in adsorbing Cd and Pb (82.84 and 111.24 mg g −1 ), regeneration ability (removal efficiency 94.32 and 92.365), and competitive ability under competing cations (83.15 and 84.36%) compared to other materials (WSBC and Mg-WSBC). The practical feasibility of Fe-WSBC for spiked river water verified the 92.57% removal of Cd and 85.73% for Pb in 50 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 contamination, respectively. Besides, the leaching of Cd and Pb with Fe-WSBC under flow-through conditions was lowered to (0.326 and 17.62 mg L −1 ), respectively as compared to control (CK) (0.836 and 40.40 mg L −1 ). In short, this study presents the applicable approach for simultaneous remediation of contaminated water and soil matrices, offering insights into environmentally friendly green remediation strategies for heavy metals co-contaminated matrices.

Fabrication of (amino)thiol chelating agents on SBA-15 and MCM-41 and applications in the extraction of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) cations from aqueous solutions

Maqinana Siphosethu,Kowenje Chrispin B. O.,Ojwach Stephen O.

Reactions of N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)isophthalamide with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) afforded the the corresponding Schiff base chelating ligand, (1Z,3Z)-N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-N' 1 ,N' 3 bis(3(triethoxysilyl)propyl) isophthalimidamide ( L1 ) in high yields. Subsequent immobilization of L1 on mesoporous silica supports (SBA-15 and MCM-41) following a divergent method produced the respective fabricated L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials. Characterization of the fabricated chelating agents was accomplished using SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, PXRD, FT-IR, and TGA-DTA/DSC techniques. The fabricated materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) metal ions from water. Both the L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials demonstrated high extraction efficiencies for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, achieving over 98% and 97% removal, respectively, across a broad pH range (3–9). For Cr(VI) anions, relatively lower optimal extraction efficiencies of 67% and 77% were recorded between pH 3–12, for L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 , adsorbents, respectively. Faster extraction kinetics were observed for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, with over 94% removal achieved within 30 min, even at low initial metal concentrations (5 ppm) and adsorbent dosages (10 mg). Kinetic modelling showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo -second-order kinetics, with high correlation coefficients (R 2 ) for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI) of 0.97573, 0.97348, and 0.91017 using L1@MCM-41 , and 0.9754, 0.97089, and 0.89411 using L1@SBA-15 , respectively. Equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, with R 2 values of 0.97952, 0.99892, and 0.97374 for L1@SBA-15 and 0.99879, 0.99999, and 0.90923 for L1@MCM-41 , corresponding to Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI), respectively. In competitive metal ion systems, the extraction selectivity followed the order Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Cr(VI), with L1@SBA-15 exhibiting superior overall performance compared to L1@MCM-41 . The extraction mechanism was postulated to occur through the coordination of the metal ions to the nitrogen/sulfur donor atoms in the chelating agents, consistent with the hard and soft acid and base (HSAB) principle. Furthermore, L1@MCM-41 demonstrated notable regeneration potential, retaining Cr(VI) extraction efficiencies over four successive cycles. Graphical

Electrochemical sensor based on N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD nanomaterials: Application to simultaneous selective determination of Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) irons released from iron supplement in simulated gastric fluid

Xuemei Ma,Jiayi Yu,Lin Wei,Qian Zhao,Liyong Ren,Zhiyong Hu

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag–O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

Preparation of polyethylenimine and carboxymethyl cellulose co-modified magnetic bentonite for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) based on the concept of mesh bag and octopus-like tentacle

Tang Rui,Zhang Hanbing,Muhammad Yaseen,Lu Caimei,Liu Kun,Yu Sishan,Tong Zhangfa

Magnetic bentonite (MB) is a cheap, effective and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of many pollutants. However, further enhancing the adsorption performance of pristine MB and eliminating the instability of Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles in MB are vital and urgent for practical applications. Based on the principles of washing mesh bag and octopus tentacle, mesh-bag-like modifiers with tentacle-like structure of octopus were synthesized via grafted reaction of polyethylenimine (PEI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to cover MB. As compared with the pristine MB, CMC-MB and PEI-MB, the magnetic bentonite adsorbent co-modified by PEI and CMC (CMC/PEI-MB) exhibited more multi-adsorption sites, stronger capture effects of tentacle for heavy metals and more effective mesh-bag-protection for Fe 3 O 4 . Attributed to these fascinating properties, CMC/PEI-MB achieved faster adsorption rates (the values of k 2 of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were 73.0 g mg ‒1 min ‒1 and 17.4 g  mg ‒1  min ‒1 ) and elevated adsorption capacities (760 mg g ‒1 and 470 mg g ‒1 ) for 1500 mg L ‒1 Pb(II) and 1000 mg L ‒1 Cd(II) in a wider pH range (3–7). Moreover, the reutilization rate of Pb(II) and Cd(II) over CMC/PEI-MB still remained 90% after five successive recycles. XRD and FT-IR results indicated that the structure of CMC/PEI-MB was well persevered after desorption, and the corresponding maximum desorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from CMC/PEI-MB were 624 mg g ‒1 and 362 mg g ‒1 within 1 h, respectively. The findings of this study provide an interesting and effective approach for the construction of superior adsorbents basing on customary phenomena for the remediation of heavy metals from wastewater. Development of a tetra-elemental speciation method for simultaneously quantifying Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish by high-performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Pingxiu Zeng,Feng Guo,Yuanchao Wang,Hongmei Hu,Jinhua Liu,Heyong Cheng

Cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead are four widespread metals in our environment from natural sources and human activities, and their toxic, metabolic, and bioavailable properties are chemical form-dependent. Considering large sample capacity in food, environmental and related fields, efficient, sensitive, inexpensive, and green methodologies are preferred for quantifying cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead compounds in an analytical trial. Herein we proposed a tetra-elemental method for simultaneous measurement of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds by interfacing high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The tetra-elemental method measured 12 metal compounds within 24 min in satisfactory precisions (<4.3 %) and low detection limits (0.022, 0.011–0.15, 0.016–0.028, and 0.013–0.021 μg L −1 for Cd(II), five tin compounds, three mercury compounds, and three lead compounds, respectively). By applying the proposed tetra-elemental speciation method to shrimp and fish, we found Cd(II) (0.043 mg kg −1 ) presented only in shrimp and methylmercury (0.8–4.6 μg kg −1 ) in both shrimp and fish with the absence of all targeted Sn and Pb compounds, which were far below the maximum limits by China GB 2762-2022. Overall, the proposed method offered significant advantages in analytical, economic and environmental aspects with good applicability to a wide range of food, environmental, and biological samples.

Cation and anion Co-doping synergy to improve structural stability of Li- and Mn-rich layered cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Guorong Chen,Juan An,Yiming Meng,Changzhou Yuan,Bryan Matthews,Fei Dou,Liyi Shi,Yongfeng Zhou,Pingan Song,Gang Wu,Dengsong Zhang

Cobalt-free Li and Mn-rich layered cathode materials are promising for next generation lithium ion batteries due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, these materials are facing serious issues, such as structural collapse due to volume shrinkage during Ni 2+ oxidation to Ni 4+ and oxygen vacancy generation over 4.5V. In this work, we report a strategy to address the issue of volume shrinkage caused by structural deformation via constructing a large-size rigid frame by simultaneously doping inactive and large radius atoms of Cd and S. This strategy significantly reduces the volume shrinkage when fully delithiated relative to the pristine material. The Cd- and S-doped cathode materials present a highly reversible structure, which were determined by using HAADF-STEM and in-situ XRD characterization. The doped Cd and S atoms act as supporting atoms and synergistically enlarge the layer spacing of crystalline from 0.455 to 0.483 nm. The in-situ XRD monitors the structural changes in real time during charging and discharging processes, further verifying structural stability during cycling. Due to the unique structural properites, an initial capacity of 268.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C along with a good rate capacity of 153.8 mAh g −1 at 5 C were achieved. Also, a capacity of 243.4 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C over 80 cycles indicate good cyclic stability of the co-doped Li- and Mn-rich layered cathode.
