Effect of Ligand Substitution on the Formation of the Meltable Fe-ZIF

Liuyang Zheng,Chaohui Guo,Zijuan Du,Juan Han,Ang Qiao,De Fang,Haizheng Tao

Meltable metal–organic frameworks (MOF) are essential for the formation of MOF glasses, which have emerged as a new family of functional materials offering promising potential for applications in gas separation, luminescence, energy storage, and beyond. Herein, the synthesis of iron-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) crystals, specifically Fe3(Im)6(HIm)2, where Im is imidazolate, is reported. Upon the substitution of some Im linkers with a secondary ligand, 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (dmbIm), it was found that such substitution induces the formation of new phases: one phase exhibits meltability and subsequent glass formation, while another phase [Fe3(Im)1.56(dmbIm)4.44(HIm)2] is non-meltable. Through structural characterizations, the configuration of the tetrahedral [Fe-linkers] units was revealed to be crucial in determining the meltability of Fe-ZIF. The incorporation of a large secondary ligand hinders the occurrence of melting. This work provides an insight into how ligands affect the accessibility of the liquid state of MOFs, showing a practical strategy for designing meltable MOFs.

Self-assembled orlistat–Fe(III) nanoparticles amplify ferroptosis for enhanced tumor therapy

Ren Jinxiao,Li Shiping,Shen Juping

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excessive lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Herein, we report a novel metal-coordinated nanoparticle system (OFe-NPs) fabricated via a one-pot self-assembly between orlistat and FeCl 3 ·6 H₂O for ferroptosis-based tumor therapy. The optimized OFe-NPs exhibited uniform nanoscale size and good colloidal stability under physiological conditions. In MCF-7 breast cancer cells, OFe-NPs showed significantly enhanced cytotoxicity compared with free orlistat, which was attributed to glutathione (GSH)-responsive disassembly and intracellular release of Fe ions and orlistat. Mechanistic investigations revealed that OFe-NPs effectively induced ferroptosis, as evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation, intracellular Fe 2+ accumulation, glutathione depletion, malondialdehyde elevation, and marked downregulation of GPX4. In an MCF-7 xenograft mouse model, OFe-NPs treatment significantly suppressed tumor growth, achieving a tumor inhibition rate of 76.76% with no evident systemic toxicity. These findings demonstrate that metal-coordinated orlistat–Fe(III) nanoparticles synergistically amplify ferroptosis via simultaneous iron-mediated oxidative stress and GPX4 suppression, offering a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Enhanced Sr2+ Sequestration in Fe-Modified Sodium Titanate: Adsorption Performance and Mechanisms

Qiang Zhang,Zhenghua Qian,Xueyang Liu,Shuai Wang,Yanbo Qiao,Xiaofeng Liu

The sequestration of Sr2+ remains a significant challenge in the treatment of radioactive liquid waste. In this work, we studied the synthesis and characterization of sodium titanate (NTO) and Fe-modified sodium titanate (Fe-NTO) for the removal of Sr2+ from complex aqueous environments. The introduction of Fe species was accompanied by an expanded interlayer spacing of the sodium titanate phase, which may improve Sr2+ accessibility and influence adsorption behavior. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Fe-NTO could be described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir equation, respectively, giving an enhanced capacity of 173.92 mg g–1 as compared to pristine NTO (151.03 mg g–1). In complex solution matrices, Fe-NTO maintained effective Sr2+ uptake in simulated seawater, although the Sr/Ca discrimination was modest. In simulated waste liquid of the thorium molten salt reactor nuclear energy system (TMSR), Fe-NTO exhibited strong Sr2+ adsorption with a high distribution coefficient of 1.47 × 105 mL g–1, while also showing strong uptake of other multivalent ions. Combined Raman, XPS, postadsorption XRD, and ICP-OES analyses support that Sr2+ sequestration involves electrostatic attraction, Na+/Sr2+ ion exchange, and weak interactions with oxygen-containing sites in the titanate structure. These findings demonstrate the potential of Fe-NTO for effective Sr2+ sequestration in complex aqueous matrices, including simulated TMSR-related waste liquid, while underscoring the need for further optimization of ion selectivity in multicomponent systems.

Zn ion-implanted absorbable Fe for improved cytocompatibility and mitigated neointimal hyperplasia

Wang Xueying,Liu Hongyi,Sun Mingjiang,Liu Aihua,Li Yan

Ultrathin strut Fe-based scaffolds have made significant progress in the field of vascular interventional devices, but the issues of slow degradation and insufficient biocompatibility at the cell/material interface remain unresolved. This study prepared a functionalized surface on Fe by Zn ion implantation (Zn/Fe). Zn/Fe preferentially releases the antioxidant element Zn in the early degradation due to Zn–Fe galvanic coupling corrosion. It facilitates the adhesion and proliferation of endothelial cells and mitigates the risk of oxidative stress. The degradation rate of Zn/Fe was about 1.6 times that of Fe after 56 days of implantation in the common carotid artery of rats, with a 36.1% reduction in lumen loss rate, demonstrating favorable in vivo biocompatibility. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of novel functionalized Fe-based scaffold medical devices.

Forming interfacial Li-Ni-Fe hydride enables room-temperature alkyne semi-hydrogenation

Qiongyu Wang,Ziheng Zhang,Xilun Zhang,Hua Xie,Ling Jiang,Fei Chang

Catalytic alkyne semi-hydrogenation is a pivotal industrial transformation currently constrained by the limitations of existing heterogeneous catalysts: precious metals (e.g., Pd) face high costs, while non-precious alternatives (e.g., Ni, Cu, Fe) generally require harsh reaction conditions (100–200 °C, 10–40 bar H 2 ). To address these persistent challenges, we propose a novel strategy integrating alkali metal hydrides, serving simultaneously as hydrogen donors and anionic “ligands” into transition metal systems. Herein, we report a NiFe-LiH composite catalyst that enables efficient and highly selective liquid-phase semi-hydrogenation of alkynes—including aliphatic, aromatic, and heteroatom-substituted substrates under very mild conditions (25 °C, ≤3 bar H 2 ). Mechanistic investigations reveal that reactive hydride species (H − ) are integral to the hydrogenation catalysis. Critically, the formation of unique Li-Ni-Fe-H interfacial species facilitate synergistic interactions wherein anionic hydrides coordinate with transition metals, modulating their electronic states to simultaneously enhance catalytic activity and selectivity. This work demonstrates room-temperature activation and transformation of alkynes enabled by a catalytic Li-Ni-Fe-H system, offering a promising new pathway for developing efficient non-noble metal catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Electrostatically assembled graphene oxide-wrapped Fe-pillared bentonite electrodes for capacitive deionization

Jianyun Liu,Junsheng Wu,Yue Zhu,Boshuang Zhang,Jianmao Yang

GO is electrostatically assembled on Fe-pillared bentonite at mild conditions. • The optimized GO/PB electrode delivers a desalination capacity of 41.11 mg g −1 in 10 mM NaCl. • A balanced GO loading improves conductivity without blocking ion-accessible pores. • The electrode retains 91.12% capacity after 100 CDI cycles. • Real groundwater desalination achieves >85% removal for major ions. Bentonite is an abundant layered clay mineral with intrinsic negative charge and ion-exchange capability, but its direct use as a capacitive deionization (CDI) electrode is restricted by poor electrical conductivity. In this work, graphene oxide-encapsulated Fe-pillared bentonite (GO/PB) composites were prepared through a mild electrostatic self-assembly strategy. Fe pillaring enlarged the interlayer space and exposed ion-accessible surfaces, while cationic surfactant-assisted assembly enabled negatively charged GO sheets to uniformly anchor onto the pillared bentonite surface. The resulting composite integrated the structural stability and cation-affinity of pillared bentonite with a uniformly assembled GO-PB interface, providing more efficient charge transfer and desalination than the physically mixed counterpart. The optimized GO/PB-0.2 with 14.6% GO delivered a salt adsorption capacity of 41.11 mg g −1 in 10 mmol L −1 NaCl and achieved 59.77 mg g −1 in 50 mmol L −1 NaCl. The capacity still maintained 91.12% after 100 continuous cycles, with no obvious change in the crystalline structure. Desalination tests using actual groundwater further showed simultaneous removal of multiple ions with removal efficiencies above 85%. This work demonstrates that charge-directed interfacial assembly provides an effective strategy for improving the electrical accessibility and utilization of pillared-clay ion-storage domains, offering a mild route for developing low-cost and stable CDI electrodes for brackish-water treatment. Fe-modulated Cu–ZnO–CeO2 catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation

Minghao Geng,Jiahao Li,Zhengze Li,Meng Sui,Fashe Li,Hua Wang,Zhiyu Hua

Fe-modulated Cu-ZnO CeO 2 catalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method. • Moderate Fe doping suppressed CuO growth and improved Cu dispersion. • Fe tuned the interface and oxygen defects to balance reducibility. • Fe10-CZCe achieved 14.5% CO 2 conversion with high methanol selectivity. • The promotion by Fe stems from interfacial regulation, not new phases. Copper-based catalysts have been widely applied in methanol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation. Yet efficient operation at an industrially relevant level remains challenging. The use of CO 2 as a carbon source is still limited by difficult molecular activation and by imperfect interfacial matching. Here, a series of Fe-doped Cu-ZnO CeO 2 catalysts was prepared by a sol-gel route. The influence of Fe content on phase structure, surface electronic environment, reduction behaviour, CO 2 adsorption characteristics and catalytic performance was examined systematically. Fe incorporation did not change the fundamental phase composition of CuO and CeO 2 . It did, however, strongly affect Cu dispersion, the near-surface defect environment of CeO 2 , and the electronic structure of the interface. Moderate Fe addition suppressed CuO crystallite growth, improved Cu dispersion, and produced a more concentrated reduction profile with a more suitable distribution of CO 2 adsorption strength. Excess Fe enhanced defect-related signals and high-temperature adsorption, but also increased interfacial perturbation, which was unfavourable for the further conversion of intermediates. At 3 MPa and 260 °C, Fe10-CZCe showed the best overall performance, giving a CO 2 conversion of 14.5% together with high methanol selectivity and the highest methanol space-time yield. The beneficial role of Fe is therefore linked to reconstruction of the Cu-ZnO CeO 2 interface, which promotes a more effective balance between CO 2 adsorption, activation and hydrogenation. These findings provide a useful perspective for compositional tuning and interface design in Cu-based catalysts. Download: Download high-res image (231KB) Download: Download full-size image

Enhanced photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate over oxygen vacancy-engineered Fe-doped CeO2

Jialu Li,Junhao Lin,Zhongyue Sun,Jiawei Liu,Zhilin Zhang,Huiping Deng

A visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system based on Fe-doped CeO 2 was developed for the efficient degradation of ofloxacin (OFX) in aqueous environments. Fe incorporation effectively regulated the electronic structure of CeO 2 , leading to enhanced visible-light utilization, promoted charge separation, and accelerated interfacial electron transfer, thereby facilitating PMS activation. The optimized 10% Fe-CeO 2 catalyst exhibited remarkably enhanced catalytic activity, achieving nearly complete OFX degradation within 10 min with an apparent rate constant of 0.3606 min −1 , which was substantially higher than that of pristine CeO 2 and the corresponding control systems. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that Fe incorporation optimized the local electronic environment of CeO 2 , thereby facilitating charge migration and PMS activation. Reactive species quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance analyses confirmed that multiple reactive oxygen species, including superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ), sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ), hydroxyl radical ( • OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), participated synergistically in the degradation process. Density functional theory calculations further revealed that Fe incorporation optimized the electronic distribution of CeO 2 and strengthened the adsorption and electron transfer of PMS and O 2 on the catalyst surface, thereby promoting the generation of oxidative species. This work provides mechanistic insight into Fe-mediated electronic structure modulation for efficient PMS activation and offers a feasible strategy for the rational design of ceria-based photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Cooperative Fe–NH2 functionalized COFs for steric-hindrance-resistant capture of organophosphorus

Wenyan He,Siyan Xu,Kaijie Ye,Yinuo Dan,Moli Chen,Jia He,Xiaolong Shi

The removal of sterically hindered diethylenetriamine penta(methylene phosphonic acid) (DTPMP) from wastewater is challenging because its bulky molecular architecture impedes both intraparticle diffusion and effective coordination with conventional adsorbents. To address this limitation, a cooperative dual-functional covalent organic framework (Fe–NH 2 /COF 4 ) was synthesized via sequential Fe incorporation followed by nitro-to-amine reduction. The resulting material exhibits a high specific surface area of 501.6 m 2 /g and a well-matched pore size of 17.16 Å, closely aligning with the DTPMP molecular dimension (∼15.7 Å). Under the optimized conditions, Fe–NH 2 /COF 4 achieves a removal efficiency of 93.85% and an adsorption capacity of 338.2 mg/g, reducing effluent total phosphorus to below 0.5 mg/L (the Grade 1 A discharge standard). Mechanistic investigations, including experiments and DFT calculations (adsorption energy: −1.07 eV), reveal synergistic contributions from Fe–phosphonate coordination, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm rapid intrapore diffusion (D = 5.7 × 10 −7  cm 2 /s). The adsorbent demonstrates good reusability (82% capacity retention after five cycles) and remarkable robustness against coexisting ions and humic acid (HA), retaining an adsorption capacity of 332.5 mg/g even in simulated wastewater. Collectively, these findings establish a steric-hindrance-resistant adsorption paradigm and provide rational design guidelines for dual-site COF adsorbents targeting refractory organophosphorus pollutants.

Design of a Fe/FeP/ZnIn2S4 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Jiahui Wang,Jingbiao Ge,Huihui Xue,Yang Yang,Sujuan Zhang,Xiuzhen Zheng,Shifu Chen

Photocatalytic water splitting is an effective way to produce H2 and a key research direction in H2 energy development. In this paper, a Fe/FeP/ZnIn2S4 (Fe/FeP/ZIS) composite was prepared by a self-assembly method, with 2D Fe/FeP nanorods attached to the surface of 3D ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) microflowers. When the mass percentage of Fe/FeP loading was 5%, the Fe/FeP/ZIS heterojunction exhibited the best photocatalytic performance (4.56 mmol·g–1·h–1), much higher than that of Fe/FeP and ZIS. The significantly enhanced activity of Fe/FeP/ZIS was ascribed to the close interface contact formed between Fe/FeP and ZIS, which accelerated the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers (PCCs). This study not only offers a reference for the design of novel non-noble cocatalysts but also promotes the improvement in the utilization efficiency of PCCs.

Enhancing the Fenton-like activity of molybdenite through Fe(III) ions impregnation

Zhenghang Lai,Yanping Ding,Yu Yang,Lei Cheng,Jingwen Wang,Yong Liu

The Fenton-like application potential of MoS2 has recently attracted widespread interest in advanced oxidation processes. This study utilized natural molybdenite ore as the source of MoS2, and the Fenton-like reactivity of molybdenite was further enhanced by dropping Fe(III) ions on the basal planes of MoS2. EDS elemental analysis and XPS results suggest that Fe species were successfully anchored on the molybdenite surface, which exhibited exceptional efficiency in peracetic acid (PAA) activation. The Fe-molybdenite/PAA system achieved 83.2% degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) within 30 min, and the reaction efficiency by Fe-molybdenite was 3.3 times higher than that of the unmodified molybdenite. HO• and Fe(V) were identified as the reactive species (RSs) during PAA activation, and SMT was degraded by these RSs. Increasing Fe-molybdenite and PAA dosages enhanced SMT degradation, with optimal performance observed at pH 4. Hydroxylation, nitrification, Smiles rearrangement and radical recombination reactions were involved during SMT degradation. Tetracyclines, dyes and other sulphonamide antibiotics could also be well degraded by Fe-molybdenite/PAA. This study elucidates fundamental design principles for engineering Fenton-like catalysts from natural mineral precursors.

Efficient and Stable Alkaline Oxygen Evolution on Fe/Co Co-Doped NiSe

Chao Wang,Qing Zhang,Cong Liu,Haishun Jiang,Wan Zhou,Muhammad Nadeem,Qiaoliang Bao,Yoshio Bando,Ding Yuan,Yuhai Dou

The slow kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impose a major limitation on overall water electrolysis, creating a demand for highly active catalysts. Transition metal selenides (TMSs) offer favorable electrical conductivity, inexpensive constituents, and adjustable electronic configurations; however, their inherent catalytic activity is still insufficient. In this study, nanorod-like Fe/Co co-doped NiSe (Fe,Co-NiSe) was prepared by hydrothermally forming NiSe and subsequently introducing Fe and Co through a simple soaking treatment. The simultaneous incorporation of Fe and Co effectively tunes the electronic structure of NiSe. Raman measurements performed in situ show that introducing Fe/Co favors the generation of NiOOH-type oxyhydroxide species, thereby enhancing OER activity. 18O-labeling differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms that Fe,Co-NiSe follows the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis further indicates that Fe-induced electronic redistribution at Co sites raises the Co d-band position and reduces the Gibbs energy required for the kinetically limiting *O → *OOH conversion. Consequently, under alkaline conditions, Fe,Co-NiSe reaches 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 229 mV and sustains 50 mA cm-2 for 300 h. When employed as the anodic electrode in an anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer coupled with Pt/C, this electrolyzer delivers 1 A cm-2 while registering a cell voltage of 1.84 V.
