Enabling kinetics matching in electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis by leveraging spatially-confined Cu/Fe2O3 heterointerfaces to maximize *H supply and utilization

Mengting Liu,Fu Yang,Hongyao Zhao,Xiu Zhong,Ruiting Ni,Kwame Nana Opoku,Zhenxiao Wang,Yangping Zhang,Yanyun Wang,Feng Zeng,Yinlong Zhu,Weidong Shi

In electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR), the generation of active hydrogen (*H) and its poor utilization in conversion of various nitrate intermediates often cause mismatched kinetics, resulting in low ammonia yield rate (YR NH3 ) and Faraday efficiency (FE NH3 ). Herein, we construct a spatially-confined Cu/Fe 2 O 3 heterointerfaces within porous carbon fiber, featuring oxygen vacancy-rich iron oxide nanoparticles (∼14.7 nm) interface-coupled well-dispersed Cu nanocrystals. The interfacial metallic copper sites with optimized interfacial electron transfer accelerate the consumption of NO 2 – through supplying the most abundant active *H to equilibrate NITRR kinetics. The easy desorption of generated NH 3 from active sites facilitates the accelerated reaction cycles by rapidly exposing the spent active sites. Correspondingly, this catalyst achieves nearly 100 % nitrate conversion, with a YR NH3 of 81.3 mg h −1 mg cat -1 , FE NH3 of 98.11 %, and 100 % NH 3 selectivity without any nitrite accumulation, outperforming most state-to-art catalysts as reported. Impressively, when nitrite acts as reactant, ammonia synthesis through nitrite reduction reaches YR NH3 of 99 mg h −1 mg cat -1 and FE NH3 of 99.44 % outperforming all the same series reported. Moreover, active *H quenching and isotope labeling experiments uncover the generation of the most abundant active *H species and their high utilization among the reported results. Density function theory (DFT) calculations further indicate the interfacial Cu/Fe 2 O 3 regulates the d-band center of the catalyst, optimizing the adsorption of nitrate and further lowering the reaction energy barrier of the decisive step (*NO→*NOH).

γ-Fe2O3@Poly(sucrose allyl ether) magnetic microspheres for tumor enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and high-efficiency cooperative magnetothermal therapy

Yanfang Zhou,Piaoyi Chen,Mianrong Chen,Jiesong Li,Xufeng Li,Lingyin Lin,Yingying Lun,Qiuxia Li,Qinglin Xiao,Yugang Huang,Xianshu Wang,Hongzhi Zou,Guodong Ye

Traditional magnetothermal nanoparticles showed great limitations for the diagnosis of tumor location in a dynamic physiological environment in vivo . Here, we show an one-step photo-click method based on the composite structure of γ-Fe 2 O 3 @Poly(sucrose allyl ether) magnetic microspheres to meet this challenge. The advantages are to prepare the magnetic microspheres not in extreme conditions and using sucrose as the polymeric matrix to prevent Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles from agglomeration. A series of in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that γ-Fe 2 O 3 @PSAE has excellent stability in biological medium and inappreciable cytotoxicity. Moreover obvious tumor magnetic resonance imaging contrasts were observed based on response of γ-Fe 2 O 3 @PSAE. Under an alternating magnetic field, the heat generated by the magnetic microspheres γ-Fe 2 O 3 @PSAE thermally ablated H 22 hepatoma cells from Kunming male mice, thereby inhibiting tumors. The histopathological studies showed that the tumor growth was significantly inhibited with the increase in the dosage of γ-Fe 2 O 3 @PSAE.

Magnetic γ-Fe2O3@REVO4 (RE = Sm, Dy, Ho) affinity microspheres for selective capture, fast separation and easy identification of phosphopeptides

Zhi-Gang Wang,Gong Cheng,Yan-Lin Liu,Ji-Lin Zhang,De-Hui Sun,Jia-Zuan Ni

The multifunctional microspheres consisting of the magnetic γ-Fe2O3 core and the affinity REVO4 (RE = Sm, Dy, Ho) shell have been synthesized via the homogenous precipitation–calcination–ion exchange three-step synthetic route. Their morphologies, structures, surface properties, and magnetisms were characterized, respectively. SEM and TEM images indicate that they all have an average size of about 400 nm and very rough surfaces. The TEM images further reveal that the γ-Fe2O3@REVO4 microspheres are all core–shell structures and the REVO4 shells are about 55–60 nm in thickness. The XRD pattern analyses show that the magnetic γ-Fe2O3 cores belong to cubic structure and the REVO4 (RE = Sm, Dy, Ho) shells are composed of their corresponding tetragonal major phases. HRTEM images, FTIR spectra and EDS further demonstrate the formations of tetragonal REVO4 shells based on checkup of the corresponding lattice fringes, characteristic IR absorption peaks and element signals. Their potentials for selective capture, rapid separation, and convenient mass spectra (MS) labeling of the phosphopeptides from complex proteolytic digests are explored and evaluated for the first time. The experimental results show that the magnetic γ-Fe2O3@REVO4 core–shell structured microspheres have high selective affinity for the phosphopeptides. The trapped phosphopeptides can be rapidly isolated by an external magnetic field, and can be easily identified by characteristic MS signals from 80 Da mass losses in the mass spectra (MS). Additionally, the γ-Fe2O3@REVO4 affinity materials can be reused after recovery.

An efficient and green pathway for continuous Friedel-Crafts acylation over α-Fe2O3 and CaCO3 nanoparticles prepared in the microreactors

Zheng Fang,Wei He,Tao Tu,Niuniu Lv,Chuanhong Qiu,Xin Li,Ning Zhu,Li Wan,Kai Guo

α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were prepared by using a continuous precipitation method with a valve assisted micromixer in the presence of iron (III) sulfate and ammonia water. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Meanwhile, CaCO 3 nanoparticles were synthesized in a tube-in-tube flow reactor AF-2400. The acylation process catalyzed by modified lipophilic α-Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 nanoparticles in the flow reactor were systematically investigated. Under the optimal conditions, a yield of 97.8% was obtained. Addition of CaCO 3 nanoparticles resulted in higher catalytic efficiency compared with pure modified α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. Moreover, this novel acylation also worked well for other substrates.

Chemiresistive sensor based on hollow Fe2O3 octahedrons incorporated into porous In2O3 nanofibers for enhanced sensing performance and recognition toward triethylamine

Yue Wang,Ya-Jie Wang,Shun-Shun Chen,Chen-Chen Liu,Li Chen,Zhong-Gang Liu,Zheng Guo

The performance of chemiresistive gas sensors greatly depends on the sensing materials. Till now, it is still a hot topic to develop high-performance sensing materials. In this study, hollow Fe 2 O 3 octahedrons incorporated into porous In 2 O 3 nanofibers (Fe 2 O 3 @In 2 O 3 ) have been prepared using the electrospinning method , followed by thermal oxidation . Through the electrospinning technique , MIL-101(Fe) octahedrons are incorporated as sacrificial templates into the precursor nanofibers containing In 3+ . The precursor nanofibers are transformed into porous In 2 O 3 nanofibers by calcination in air, and MIL-101(Fe) are simultaneously changed into hollow Fe 2 O 3 octahedrons, forming Fe 2 O 3 @In 2 O 3 nanofibers. Considering their unique morphology, the gas sensing properties of the prepared nanofibers are investigated. The results demonstrate that they exhibit high response and selectivity toward triethylamine (TEA) with a good stability. Furthermore, their dynamic sensing behaviors are investigated under the modulation of working temperature by triangular wave heating voltage. According to their characteristic response curves, TEA can be effectively discriminated among all the detected gases in combination with a simple principal component analysis (PCA)-based recognition algorithm. Additionally, TEA can be quantitatively analyzed through the relationship between its concentration and the response at the characteristic point of the response curves.

Ferrihydrite-Modified Ti–Fe2O3 as an Effective Photoanode: The Role of Interface Interactions in Enhancing the Photocatalytic Activity of Water Oxidation

Qijing Bu,Shuo Li,Qiannan Wu,Lingling Bi,Yanhong Lin,Dejun Wang,Xiaoxin Zou,Tengfeng Xie

Semiconductor electrodes integrated with cocatalysts are key components of photoelectrochemistry (PEC)-based solar-energy conversion. However, efforts to optimize the PEC device have been limited by an inadequate understanding of the interface interactions between the semiconductor–cocatalyst (sem|cat) and cocatalyst–electrolyte (cat|ele) interface. In our work, we used ferrihydrite (Fh)-modified Ti–Fe 2 O 3 as a model to explore the transfer process of photogenerated charge carriers between the Ti–Fe 2 O 3 –Fh (Ti–Fe 2 O 3 |Fh) interface and Fh-electrolyte (Fh|ele) interface. The results demonstrate that the biphasic structure (Fh/Ti–Fe 2 O 3 ) possesses the advantage that the minority hole transfer from Ti–Fe 2 O 3 to Fh is driven by the interfacial electric field at the Ti–Fe 2 O 3 |Fh interface; meanwhile, the holes reached at the surface of Fh can rapidly inject into the electrolyte across the Fh|ele interface. As a benefit from the improved charge transfer at the Ti–Fe 2 O 3 |Fh and Fh|ele interface, the photocurrent density obtained by Fh/Ti–Fe 2 O 3 can reach 2.32 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus RHE, which is three times higher than that of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 . Graphical Water splitting : The excellent performance of ferrihydrite (Fh)/Ti–Fe 2 O 3 is attributed to the unhindered charge transfer at the Ti–Fe 2 O 3 |Fh and Fh|electrolyte interfaces. As a benefit from this improved charge transfer, the photocurrent density obtained by Fh/Ti–Fe 2 O 3 can reach 2.32 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, which is three times higher than that of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 .

Fabrication of metallic charge transfer channel between photoanode Ti/Fe2O3 and cocatalyst CoOx: an effective strategy for promoting photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Shuo Li,Qidong Zhao,Dedong Meng,Dejun Wang,Tengfeng Xie

Cocatalysts are one essential factor for promoting the photoelectrochemical water oxidation efficiency of photoanodes, but the influence of interface charge transfer between the semiconductor and cocatalyst has been rarely addressed. Due to their poor charge conductivity, the application of many metal oxides as cocatalysts has been limited. In this work, using photoanode Ti/Fe2O3 and cocatalyst CoOx as a model system, we elaborately design a charge transfer channel of metal Co between the photoanode and cocatalyst. Such a ternary nanostructure has proved to possess several advantageous features, including effective charge separation efficiency, long lifetime of photogenerated holes, and fast charge transport from the photoanode to the surface of the cocatalyst. Benefiting from these desirable nanostructures, the photoanode, containing a charge transfer channel of metal Co, exhibited a remarkable photoelectrochemical performance for water oxidation, with an almost 7-fold enhancement in the photocurrent density at 1.23 V vs. RHE under visible light illumination and about a 0.15 V water oxidation onset potential negative shift compared to the Ti/Fe2O3 photoanode. These findings demonstrate that the successful construction of a metallic charge transfer channel between the photoanode and cocatalyst should be employed as a general strategy for photoconversion applications.

Magnetic Mesoporous γ-Fe2O3 Supports from Meso-MIL-88A via Controlled Oxidation–Reduction Pyrolysis: Enabling Recyclable Lipase Catalysis in Phospholipid Synthesis

Yuhan Li,Zhuoyang Du,Yongheng Shi,Zeqing Liu,Lingmei Dai,Dehua Liu,Wei Du

Enzyme immobilization on solid supports enhances stability and reusability, yet nanoscale carriers such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) still face challenges in efficient recovery. While pyrolysis can magnetize Fe-MOFs, conventional methods often compromise either enzyme activity or structural integrity. This study presents a rational two-step oxidation–reduction (O–R) pyrolysis strategy to convert Meso-MIL-88A into a magnetically recyclable, mesoporous biocatalyst support (O-R500). Unlike one-step carbonization, which generates enzyme-incompatible Fe3O4, or carbonization-oxidation routes that collapse the framework, our approach first transforms the MOF into a robust α-Fe2O3 template while preserving its morphology. Citric acid then acts as a mild, slow-releasing reductant, selectively producing a γ-Fe2O3-rich phase without damaging the mesostructure. The resulting O-R500 exhibits well-defined mesopores (∼13 nm), sufficient magnetization (16 emu/g) for rapid separation, and a biocompatible surface that maintains the native conformation of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB). In the synthesis of phosphatidyl EPA/DHA, CalB@O-R500 achieved 84.5% incorporation and retained 90.3% activity over five cycles, outperforming nonmagnetic counterparts. This work not only provides a high-performance magnetic biocatalyst but also establishes a generalizable design principle for converting Fe-MOFs into structured, biocompatible, and functionally integrated carriers.

Preparation of Oil Sludge-Based Activated Carbon Loaded with CuO/Fe2O3 and Its Mechanism in Activating Peroxymonosulfate for p-Nitrophenol Degradation

Hongqiang Yuan,Zheyuan Zhan,Ying Zhang,Yue Ran,Chaofan Tan,Jialian Xie

In this study, oil sludge was utilized as a carbon source to prepare a carbon-based catalyst. By leveraging the oil sludge’s inherent iron content and subsequently introducing exogenous copper, a CuO/Fe 2 O 3 /carbon composite material (OSC-0.75Cu) was synthesized for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade p-nitrophenol. The OSC-0.75Cu/PMS system achieved a degradation efficiency of 92.19%, which was 2.91 times that of the OSC/PMS system (31.71%), and its reaction rate constant (k obs ) was 8.9 times greater. Furthermore, in simulated water matrices (containing anions and fulvic acid) and three real water matrices (rainwater, moat water, and Yangtze River water), the OSC-0.75Cu/PMS systemachieved PNP degradation efficiencies ranging from 71.63% to 76.36%. The degradation of p-nitrophenol in this system involves three primary reactive species: hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (•SO 4 − ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), among which 1 O 2 plays the dominant role. The coexistence of Cu and Fe species may facilitate surface redox reactions during PMS activation, while defect-related oxygen sites may contribute to PMS adsorption and activation and the generation of 1 O 2 . This study provides a novel strategy that enables the resource utilization of oil sludge while simultaneously addressing environmental remediation challenges.

Synergistic and differentiated mechanisms of composite fuels in thermites: A case study of Ni-modified Al/Fe2O3 prepared via electrophoretic deposition

Yajun Wang,Shaojie Zhang,Qiang Gan,Zhengliang Deng,Wenyu Li

To investigate the effect of Ni on the performance of Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite, Ni was introduced into the system, and an Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 ternary composite thermite (Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -EPD) was successfully fabricated via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A systematic comparison was conducted with physically mixed (PM) samples (Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -PM). The morphology, structure, and thermal behavior of the samples were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, and TG-DSC analyses. The results indicate that the EPD-fabricated samples exhibit a dense structure and a more uniform component distribution, whereas the physically mixed samples show pronounced agglomeration of Ni. Thermal analysis demonstrates that the incorporation of Ni enhances the thermal stability of the thermite but suppresses the energy release process. Non-isothermal kinetic analysis further reveals that Ni reduces the overall reaction activity of the system, and EPD does not lead to a reduction in the activation energy of the Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 system. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction of Al/Ni/Fe 2 O 3 -EPD in air involves the thermite reaction between Al and Fe 2 O 3 , the direct oxidation of Al, Ni, and Fe, and the alloying reaction between Al and Ni. This work systematically evaluates the effects of the EPD process and Ni fuel addition on the performance of the Al/Fe 2 O 3 thermite system. By comparing the results with reported Al/B/Fe 2 O 3 and Al/Ti/Fe 2 O 3 systems, the study elucidates the synergistic and differentiated mechanisms of various composite fuels in thermite reactions, providing useful insights into the structural design and mechanistic investigation of multicomponent composite thermites.

Core-shell FeCoNiCrCu/Fe2O3@C catalyst via cocktail effect for superior low-temperature hydrogen absorption kinetics and cycling stability of MgH2

Bogu Liu,Shuo Liang,Xingqing Duan,Yawei Li,Haixiang Huang,Tingting Xu,Bao Zhang,Jianguang Yuan,Xiaohong Chen,Ying Wu

High entropy alloys (HEAs) have garnered considerable interest in catalysis owing to their unique characteristics, while transition metal oxides remain widely studied as classical catalysts. Herein, a novel core-shell FeCoNiCrCu/Fe 2 O 3 @C catalyst coated by a micro- and nano-scale amorphous carbon layer was prepared via a relatively facile synthesis method involving complexing multiple metal cations in organic solvents followed by calcination. Compared with MgH 2 , the initial hydrogen desorption temperature of MgH 2 with the FeCoNiCrCu/Fe 2 O 3 @C catalyst decreases significantly from 290 °C to 172 °C, and the peak temperature is reduced to 268 °C. Furthermore, the catalyzed MgH 2 enables hydrogen absorption even at room temperature under 3 MPa. It also demonstrates excellent cyclability, maintaining over 90% of its initial capacity after 50 cycles, along with progressively enhanced dehydrogenation kinetics. The excellent hydrogen storage performance of the catalyzed MgH 2 is contributed to the synergistic interplay of catalytic components collectively, including the “hydrogen diffusion channel” effect of the in-situ generated Co 3 Fe 7 , the “hydrogen pump effect” exhibited by the reversible catalytic phase pair Mg 2 Ni(Cu)/Mg 2 Ni(Cu)H 4 , as well as the multiphase interface composed of HEAs FeCoNiCrCu, Co 3 Fe 7 and MgH 2 . The amorphous carbon prevents particle agglomeration. This study demonstrates that the HEAs can exhibit significant catalytic effects through rational design.

Di Xu,Lingfeng Duan,Wenlin Jia,Guohai Yang,Yingqiu Gu

Noble metal nanoparticle aggregates are attracting increasing interest as SERS active substrates for the ultrasensitive detection of environmental and biological samples. Deposition of noble metal nanoparticles on magnetic metal oxide is an effective way to not only realize the assembly of noble metal particles, but also enrich analytes in highly diluted solution. Herein, Ag@Fe 2 O 3 hybrid was prepared by a simple method and applied for sensitive and recyclable SERS detection. The low detection limit of R6G (LOD = 9.3 × 10 −10  M) and CV (LOD = 1.7 × 10 −9  M) demonstrated the excellent sensitivity for SERS application. The high stability during long-term detection illustrated the super detection capability of the Ag@Fe 2 O 3 hybrid substrate. The synergistic effect of the electromagnetic enhancement originated from nanogaps between densely and closely distributed Ag nanoparticles, the chemical enhancement from semiconductor material of Fe 2 O 3 and the magnetic enrichment of the analyte molecules was account for the excellent SERS performance of the Ag@Fe 2 O 3 substrate. As a result, the Ag@Fe 2 O 3 hybrid substrate was successfully applied to detect bilirubin in human blood and showed excellent detection ability (LOD = 2.3 × 10 −8  M).
