Environmentally friendly and facile Mg(OH)2 film for electroless nickel plating on magnesium alloy for enhanced galvanic corrosion inhibition

Zhi-Hui Xie,Dan Xu,Ya Shu,Qiwen Yong,Liang Wu,Gang Yu

Electroless amorphous nickel (Ni)–phosphorus (P) (Ni P) alloy coatings were successfully achieved on magnesium alloys using an environmentally friendly and facile Mg(OH) 2 conversion film, followed by AgNO 3 activation. The success of the coating was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction characterizations. Electrochemical tests showed that the charge transfer resistance of the newly developed electroless Ni P plating coating, which had a horizontally stacked Mg(OH) 2 nanosheet primer (Mg(OH) 2 /pH 14/ENP), was significantly higher than that with a vertically grown Mg(OH) 2 nanosheet underlayer (Mg(OH) 2 /pH 10/ENP) or that with a phosphate pretreatment (ENP). The measured corrosion current density of the Mg(OH) 2 /pH 14/ENP coating was 1.08 μA cm −2 , one magnitude smaller than that of the ENP coating. Notably, the ENP coating exhibited severe galvanic corrosion , peeling off after only 24 h of the neutral salt spray (NSS) test. In contrast, the Mg(OH) 2 /pH 14/ENP surface showed no visible corrosion cavities or signs of galvanic corrosion even after 120 h of the NSS test or 21 d of exposure to a NaCl solution. These results indicate that the as-prepared coating possesses a strong inhibition capability against galvanic corrosion between the Ni layer and the magnesium alloy, providing long-lasting corrosion protection .

Design and Fabrication of a Sandwichlike Zn/Cu/Al–Zr Coating for Superior Anticorrosive Protection Performance of ZM5 Mg Alloy

Liman Chen,Yang Yang,Guixiang Wang,Yanli Wang,Simon Ochieng Adede,Meng Zhang,Caishan Jiao,Di Wang,Dashuai Yan,Yibo Liu,Duanjie Chen,Weibing Wang

A new three-layered film was fabricated on magnesium (Mg) alloy via electroplating to guard against corrosion in a chloride aqueous environment, which consisted of an underlying double-layered zinc/copper (Zn/Cu) and a top aluminum–zirconium (Al–Zr) layer. The Zn/Cu underlayers not only impeded the galvanic corrosion between the Al–Zr coating and Mg alloy but also improved the adhesive ability between the substrate and the upper Al–Zr layer. Herein, we discussed the nucleus sizes of Al–Zr coatings at the stage of nucleation carried out with different contents of ZrCl4 in AlCl3–1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid. The sandwichlike three-layered Zn/Cu/Al–Zr coatings were systematically investigated by surface morphology, phase structure, hardness, anticorrosion performances, and first-principles calculations. The corrosion current density declined from 1.461 × 10–3 A·cm–2 of bare Mg to 4.140 × 10–7 A·cm–2 of the Zn/Cu/Al–Zr3 sample. Neutral salt spray testing demonstrated that the Zn/Cu/Al–Zr3 sample showed no evident signs of corrosion after 6 days of exposure. The enhancement of the corrosion protection property was related to the fact that the application of the Cu layer changed the corrosion direction from initial longitudinal corrosion to extended lateral corrosion and the top Al–Zr coating hindered the transmission of aggressive ions. In addition, upon increasing the Zr content in the alloy films, the Fermi energy reduced initially and then increased. The Al–Zr3 alloy with 8.3 atom % Zr showed the lowest Fermi energy (−3.0823 eV), which exhibited the most efficient corrosion protection. These results showed that the prepared three-layered coating provided reliable corrosion protection to Mg alloy and may thus promote its practical applications.

Preparation of modified fly ash-based, core–shell inhibitor and its effect on suppression of Al-Mg alloy dust explosion

Dongyang Qiu,Zhangqiang Dong,Lijuan Liu,Chuyuan Huang,Youbang Yue,Gang Zhang,Lijian Hao,Xianfeng Chen

Dust explosions caused by energetic metals pose a significant risk to process industries, making it crucial to develop high-performance explosion inhibitors. In this study, the modified power plant solid waste fly ash (FA) was confirmed as a raw material for the preparation of core–shell inhibitors to efficiently suppress dust explosion of Al-Mg alloy. The interfacial compatibility of FA was dramatically improved by using alkali hydrothermal modification and organic modification. It formed a well-coated nano-Mg(OH) 2 cladding layer on the surface of modified FA by the heterogeneous nucleation method. In a vertical combustion pipe and a 20 L spherical explosion device, the suppression effect of this novel core–shell inhibitor (FA-2@Mg(OH) 2 ) was investigated. The experimental results showed that the addition of 60 wt% of FA-2@Mg(OH) 2 reduced the maximum flame velocity ( V max ), velocity to the top of the pipe ( V top ), and average pulsation degree ( V ap ) by 87.9 %, 92.5 %, and 87.7 %, respectively, and the peak flame temperature ( T p ) declined to 298 °C. The maximum explosion pressure ( P max ) and the maximum explosion pressure rise rate (( dp / dt ) max ) were reduced by 86.1 % and 92.9 %, respectively. Combining the analysis results of SEM, EDS , XRD , and TG-DSC, the suppression mechanism of FA-2@Mg(OH) 2 was explained in depth, mainly from the heat absorption, coating effect, gas dilution, and radical adsorption. This work not only sheds new light on the design of dust explosion suppression functional materials but also broadens the application of industrial solid waste FA.

Novel application of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS activated persulfate for the disinfection of Escherichia coli in water: Performance and mechanism

Jun Chen,Shangqing Xia,Xiaohong Yang,Xue Li,Zhaoming Chen,Zihui Song,Yutong Wang,Zongsheng Zhan,Jie Jin,Dongliang Shao

New technology is required for the effective disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water. A novel type of activator material (Fe-Mg-Mt-SS) was prepared using bimetallic iron-magnesium (Fe-Mg), montmorillonite (Mt), and sewage sludge carbon (SS) and applied it for disinfection. The specific surface area of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS was 115.72 m 2 /g, and the spatial structure of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS was orderly and layered. Mt played a role in frame support, and Fe-Mg was integrated into the structure in an orderly manner. Fe-Mg-Mt-SS effectively activated persulfate (PS) to disinfect Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in water, with a disinfection rate of 7.00 lg of E. coli within 80 min in the PS/Fe-Mg-Mt-SS system, and the high disinfection rate was stable under different pH and elevated temperatures. Fe-Mg-Mt-SS showed broad spectrum disinfectant efficiency against other bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis ). Fe-Mg-Mt-SS activated PS killed E. coli mainly by producing hydroxyl and oxygen radicals, which damaged the E. coli cell membrane. Bimetallic activation with Fe and Mg synergistically activated PS, graphitised SS had more orderly spatial and laminar structures, and Mt improved the thermal stability and layer spacing of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS, which facilitated better metal insertion and improved its activation properties. The preparation of Fe-Mg-Mt-SS and activation of PS provide a new technology for the disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water.

Effects of a novel Mg-C micro-electrolysis system for phenolic wastewater degradation: material characterization, influencing factors, and model optimization

Dongling Duan,Wencheng Ma,Kejian Chen,Shuhe Guo,Chengjun Zheng,Guangzhou Tan

This study investigated a novel magnesium carbon micro-electrolysis (Mg-C ME) system for strengthening the removal of phenolic compounds in wastewater. The effects of the Mg/C mass ratio, aeration intensity, initial pH and reaction time on the degradation of three phenolic compounds and the COD removal efficiency in the simulated wastewater were evaluated using one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method. The optimum values obtained for the Mg/C mass ratio, aeration intensity, initial pH and reaction time were 3:1, 4.0 L/(L·min), 5.0 and 2.5 h, respectively. The experimental removal rates of catechol, resorcinol, and phenol, under the mentioned conditions, were obtained to be 95.6%, 71.5%, and 48.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, the COD removal rates were 63.8%,44.7%,34.0%, respectively. Moreover, experiments were designed and analyzed based on the box-based designing response surface (BBD-RSM) method. According to the results, the Mg/C mass ratio was the most significant variable showing incremental effect on the removal efficiency of catechol in a way that maximum removal efficiency of catechol was achieved in Mg/C mass ratio of 3.23:1. The validation experiments showed that the maximum removal efficiency of catechol was 96.24% under optimization conditions. Resorcinol degradation characteristics analysis indicated that the Mg-C ME system performed a key function in phenolic compounds elimination. Results showed that the Mg-C ME has a considerable capability in removing the phenolic compounds and COD. Thus, it could be considered as an efficient pretreatment choice for treating phenolic wastewater in the future.

Simultaneously improved corrosion/wear resistances of epoxy coating on Mg alloy via the coupled hybridization of GO and nano-SiO2

Miaomiao Li,Dening Zou,Bifang Zhao,Jinghui Chu,Libo Tong

The extensive application of Mg alloys is restricted by their poor corrosion, wear resistances and long-term service performance. Although the low-cost epoxy (EP) coating has excellent corrosion resistance , many pores and cracks are easily formed during the curing process, leading to the deterioration of barrier capacity. This study reports an epoxy-based nanocomposite coating, fabricated through the hybridization of γ-(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxy silane modified silica nanoparticles and graphene oxide (mSiO 2 /GO). The insulating SiO 2 particles can isolate the direct contact between Mg alloy substrate and GO sheets, avoiding the formation of micro-cells and preventing the galvanic corrosion . The SiO 2 /GO in EP coating with “crack pinning and bridge” structure has reduced porosity and enhanced consistency, which effectively prevents crack propagation and electrolyte penetration. The corrosion rate of SiO 2 /GO/EP coating is 374 and 10 times lower than that of pure EP coating and individual GO/EP coating, respectively. The wear rate of GO/EP and SiO 2 /GO/EP coating specimens is 81.2 % and 70.4 % less than that of the pure EP coating, which is related to the favorable lubricating performance and high hardness of GO nanosheets . The results show that the embedding of well-distributed mSiO 2 -GO hybrids can remarkably improve the barrier effect and anti-corrosion of EP coating.

Electrophoretic deposited boron nitride nanosheets-containing chitosan-based coating on Mg alloy for better corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and antibacterial properties

Wenjiang Huang,Di Mei,Haotian Qin,Jingan Li,Liguo Wang,Xiaoshuang Ma,Shijie Zhu,Shaokang Guan

To reduce the degradation of magnesium alloy , improve its antibacterial activity , and fulfil specific requirements for bone implant material applications, a chitosan (CS)/boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) composite coating was constructed on the surface of Mg–Zn–Y–Nd–Zr alloy via electrodeposition . The results show that BNNS was uniformly embedded and significantly changed the morphology and roughness of the CS coating. Electrochemical and immersion tests suggest that the CS–BNNS composite coating can effectively provide a long-term protection to the substrate. The antibacterial activity results show that BNNS significantly improved the antibacterial activity of the CS coating against E. coli and S. aureus , and verified the sterilisation mechanism of BNNS in contact with bacterial membranes. Meanwhile, cytocompatibility tests showed that the CS–BNNS coating has no adverse effect on the adhesion and proliferation of mouse osteoblasts cells. Thus, the fabricated CS–BNNS composite coating could be a promising application in surface modification for Mg-based bone implants.

The design and preparation of Mg and Zn co-doped carbon nitride with enhancing photocatalytic degradation efficiency for methylene blue

Minghui Duan,Guo Zeng,Jian He,Weiguo Wang

Carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is a potential material that can be used for the treatment of the wastewater contains organic dyes. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 is limited by the wide band gap and fast recombination of photon-generated carriers. In this work, the co-doped with Mg and Zn of Mg Zn 0.07 -g-C 3 N 4 was designed and prepared to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. The co-doped Mg and Zn shorted the band gap of g-C 3 N 4 from 2.74 eV to 2.50 eV. Interestingly, according to the DFT calculation, a Zn-bridge is formed between the interlayers of g-C 3 N 4 . The Zn-bridge reduces the electron localization and prolongs the existence time of photon-generated carriers. The as-prepared Mg Zn 0.07 -g-C 3 N 4 was applied for the photodegradation of methylene blue. The degradation ratios and photodynamic parameter of Mg Zn 0.07 -g-C 3 N 4 are higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 and Mg-g-C 3 N 4 (29.51 × 10 −3  min vs 8.00 × 10 −3  min).

Remarkable enhancement and electronic mechanism for hydrogen storage kinetics of Mg nano-composite by a multi-valence Co-based catalyst

B. Liu,B. Zhang,X. Chen,Y. Lv,H. Huang,J. Yuan,W. Lv,Y. Wu

Transition metals are the traditional catalysts to improve the hydrogen storage performance of Mg. In the present article, the multi-valence Co catalyst (Co@CNTs) is prepared to improve the kinetics of Mg. The dehydrogenation temperature decreases, and desorption kinetics of MgH 2 is significantly enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The dehydrogenation of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is a random bulk nucleation/surface and three-dimensional growth with constant interface velocity reaction. Although the dehydrogenation activation energy of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is reduced, the enthalpy change and entropy change of the composite are similar to the raw MgH 2 , which means the dehydrogenation is mainly dissociation of MgH 2 . Besides, the cycle performance of MgH 2 –Co@CNTs composite is stable. The damping of the performance for the composite is negligible after 50 cycles, which benefits from the in-site formed Co 3 MgC 0.5 in the composite. The Co 3 MgC 0.5 can act as a ‘hydrogen pump’ to adjust the hydrogen storage performance of Mg. Theoretical studies show that multi-valence Co can trap H 2 molecules and weaken their σ-bonds. In the first cycle, the bridging effect of Co plays an important role in the improvement of H 2 dissociation and release. In the subsequent cycles, Co 6 C 1 becomes the active site to assist the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of the composite.

Boosting solar photothermal synergy for efficient overall water splitting based on Mg, Al codoped and Rh/Cr2O3/CoOOH coloaded SrTiO3

Xuan Zhu,Yan Liu,Menglin Wang,Li Zhang,Qiaoli Li,Entao Zhang,Hongfen Mo,Yuan Gao,Chenyu Xu,Yanwei Zhang

The synergistic coupling of light and heat in solar energy has attracted increasing research attention. In this work, both codoping and coloading were applied to SrTiO 3 -based catalysts to improve their solar photo and thermal conversion, respectively, and maximum productivities of 51.55 and 25.59 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 were achieved for H 2 and O 2 in photothermal synergistic water splitting. The yield of H 2 was nearly double that achieved via pure photocatalysis. In addition to many experiments and characterizations, DFT calculations were also performed to clarify the photothermal synergy. It was found that both the light absorbance and mobility of photoinduced carriers could be promoted by solar thermal effects in the material. Meanwhile, the energy barriers of the key steps were reduced with increasing temperature in the hydrogen production driven by solar photo effects. This work offers new ideas for designing catalysts for solar hydrogen production with photothermal synergistic strategies.

Flower-like hollow Ni0.5/xMgO-Al2O3 catalysts with excellent stability for dry reforming of methane: The role of Mg addition

Xiaoqian Feng,Yilin Zhao,Shenghua Liu,Kun Wang,Baoshan Liu,Qijian Zhang,Huan Wang,Yonghua Zhao,Jing Liu,Peng Zhang,Lian Gao

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) suffers catalysts deactivation due to severe coking. Ni/MgO-Al 2 O 3 is a promising system for DRM catalysts with high coking resistance, as the addition of MgO in Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts can improve the alkalinity of the support and enhance the metal-support interaction. However, so far the activity and stability of Ni/MgO-Al 2 O 3 is still unsatisfactory while the role of Mg addition remains unclear. In this paper, a series Ni 0.5 /xMgO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts with flower-like hollow sphere morphology and high surface area were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Appropriate Mg addition promotes the formation of NiAl 2 O 4 while more Mg addition leads to the formation of Ni x Mg y O. Both cases can enhance the MSI of the catalysts without changing the morphology of the catalyst. More Mg addition also leads to stronger CO 2 adsorption via improving the alkalinity. Nevertheless, overdose of Mg results in weaker MSI and the blockage of Ni active sites. Ni 0.5 /0.5MgO-Al 2 O 3 with moderate Mg addition shows excellent activity (CH 4  ∼ 75 %, CO 2  ∼ 85 %) and stability (>100 h) at a high GHSV = 144000 ml/g cat ·h −1 and 800 °C with nearly no coking formation (<0.8 wt%). This work helps reveal the role of MgO addition in Ni/Al 2 O 3 systems and gives new insights into the design of DRM catalysts with high activity and stability.

Stimulation of in vitro and in vivo osteogenesis by Ti-Mg alloys with the sustained-release function of magnesium ions

Luxin Liang,Qianli Huang,Hong Wu,Zhengxiao Ouyang,Tang Liu,Hao He,Jian Xiao,Guanghua Lei,Kun Zhou

Magnesium (Mg) is well-known for its bioactivity and degradability. However, due to its low evaporation temperature and limited solubility in titanium (Ti), the fabrication of Ti-Mg alloys remains a huge challenge. In this study, Ti-xMg (x = 0.312, 0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 wt.%) alloys were fabricated by the combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Mg mainly existed as a solid solute element in the Ti matrix, while it also existed as second-phase particles due to its precipitation and dispersion during the SPS process. At a low content of 0.625 wt.%, Mg could increase the mechanical strength of Ti by the solid solution strengthening. However, it was detrimental to material mechanical properties when the Mg content increased to 1.25 wt.%. Being immersed in phosphate buffered solution (PBS), Ti-Mg alloys exhibited a burst Mg 2+ release behavior within the first day, and then the rates of Mg 2+ release gradually decreased within the following 27 days. The results suggested that the cell viability was dependent on the content of Mg in the Ti-Mg alloys. The high Mg content (2.5 wt.%) in the Ti-Mg alloys could lead to significant cytotoxicity. However, appropriate Mg content (0.312∼0.625 wt.%) could promote cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation. The Ti-0.625Mg alloy exhibited the best in vitro biological performance among all groups. In vivo results obtained by implanting the Ti-0.625Mg alloy in the femurs of rats further revealed its enhanced regenerative potential and osteointegration compared to pure Ti implants.
