Catalytic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa in Fe-Co-MOFs system for efficient CO2 fixation and high-value conversion

Ruting Huang,Peidong Ma,Yeyin Zhang,Kaiming Chen,Liping Wang,Ranran Wang,Xianyang Shi,Ying Yu

The enrichment efficiency during the high-value conversion of carbon dioxide still presents certain limitations in practical applications. Iron-cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, which exhibit lower toxicity to Microcystis aeruginosa , have been successfully introduced into microalgae solutions to address the issue of low CO 2 concentration in interfacial reactions. When 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid was employed as an organic ligand under synthesis conditions of 130°C, pH 3.5, and a reaction time of 15 h, the resulting MOF exhibited a CH₄ yield of 92.6 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ in the photocatalytic system at room temperature (25°C). The combination of Microcystis aeruginosa with the optimal Fe-Co-MOFs system achieved a selectivity of up to 96.1 % in converting CO 2 into CH 4 . When Microcystis aeruginosa was cultured in a modified medium with a pH of 6.78 and 5 mg of NDC-T130 at 25°C for 12 h, an OD 600 of 0.192 ± 0.01 was observed. The CH₄ yield from the Microcystis aeruginosa -NDC-T130 co-culture composite system was 1.46 times that of the Fe-Co-MOFs. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that carbon dioxide molecules preferentially adsorb on the crystal surfaces of (CoFe 2 )O 4 (113) and (Co 0.457 Fe 0.543 )(Co 1.543 Fe 0.457 )O 4 (311), with the Co site being more likely to serve as the reactive site for CO 2 photoreduction to CH 4 within the Fe-Co-MOFs. Transcriptome analysis demonstrates that MOFs enhance the dark reactions of microalgae and facilitate further CO 2 fixation for photosynthesis and electron transfer, which are crucial for improving the high-value CO 2 conversion efficiency of this system. This strategy provides both experimental and theoretical support for iron-based MOFs as photocatalytic materials, regardless of CO 2 concentration.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for dyes and antibiotics removal from wastewater using photo-Fenton catalysis MOFs as additives

Rutong Song,Weihua Han,Zhiping Yang,Zhongbin Ye,Yizhou Yang,Hu Zheng,Simiao Zhao,Guangyong Zeng

Membrane fouling is one of the major challenges limiting the application of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in various separation processes. To address this issue, we incorporated the photocatalyst NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (NM88B) into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix, creating a novel photocatalytic MMMs that can effectively degrade organic pollutants under light irradiation. This innovative approach endows the membrane with both enhanced permeability and separation selectivity, which is attributed to the hydrophilic groups of the photocatalyst, as well as significant photo-Fenton catalytic capability. The NM88B/PVDF membrane exhibits high permeability (546.4 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) and excellent catalytic degradation of dyes (over 99 %) and antibiotics (over 90 %) due to the synergistic effects of membrane separation and the photo-Fenton process. After ten cycles of self-cleaning tests, the membrane maintained superior antifouling capacity and degradation performance. This study advances the development of MMMs by addressing the persistent issue of membrane fouling while enhancing pollutant removal efficiency.

Enhanced methane production by bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as cathode in an anaerobic digestion microbial electrolysis cell

Zheng Xiaomei,Lin Rujing,Xu Jun,He Yingying,Zhang Xinying,Xie Li

Cathode materials play important roles in the optimization of methane upgrading in microbial electrolysis cell-coupled anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) systems. In this study, metal organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based bimetallic hybrids (Ni/Co-NC) was synthesized as cathode material and its performances and microbial activities were evaluated in MEC-AD. A high methane production rate (0.57 m 3 CH 4 /m 3 ·d) and yield (0.34 m 3 CH 4 /kgCOD) were achieved with a Ni/Co-NC cathode at a potential of 0.6 V. The methane content in the biogas was upgraded to ca. 90%. The enhanced methane production was likely related to the positive surface charge and the good conductive capacity and hydrogen evolution of the Ni/Co-NC cathode, as demonstrated by electrochemical assessment. Additionally, roughness and extensive surface areas provided additional room for cathodic biofilm adhesion via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. A significant enrichment of Methanobacterium (79.6%) in the MEC-AD-Ni/Co-NC system, especially in the biofilm of the cathode surface, indicated that the methane production pathway shifted from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Moreover, Methanosaeta harundinacea 6Ac species, which can directly accept electrons, were identified in the MEC-AD systems. These findings revealed that Ni/Co-NC cathode probably enhanced bioelectrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 by accelerating hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and direct electron transfer.

Preparation of a 6FDA-DAM/ODA Mixed Matrix Membrane Doped with MOFs and Its Application in Gas Separation

Yi Wang,Liang Li,Fangli Zhang,Huajiang Wang,Zhaoliang Cui,Zhaohui Wang,Xiaozu Wang

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) can significantly improve gas separation performance, but the type and state of the filler in the membrane matrix are key indicators for the development of MMMs. Therefore, in this work, 6FDA-DAM/ODA (1:1), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with different particle sizes (UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2) were synthesized, and then MOFs were doped into 6FDA-DAM/ODA to prepare MMMs. The effects of the dopant materials and their particle sizes on the gas separation performance of the membranes were investigated by testing the permeability of the MMMs to H2, CO2, CH4, and N2. When the dopant material was UIO-66, the permeability and selectivity of MMMs for each gas were significantly improved compared with that of the original membrane; when the dopant material was 300 nm UIO-66-NH2 with a loading of 10 wt %, the permeability performance and the CO2/CH4 selectivity increased from 44.1 to 57.2 compared with that of the original membrane. The permeation performance for CO2, N2, and H2 and the selectivity for CO2/N2, H2/N2, and H2/CH4 were also significantly improved. In terms of comprehensive separation performance, doping 300 nm UiO-66-NH2 was better than doping 70 and 400 nm UiO-66-NH2 and also showed excellent performance in 50:50 (vol/vol) CO2/CH4 binary mixed gas separation. This work provides an idea for the fabrication of MMMs for high-performance gas separation.

Ultra-highly efficient adsorbent for CO2 capture from air by directional deprotonation regulation of MOFs-based amine grafting

Tao Wang,Fengsheng Liu,Wenjing Tang,Shisen Xu,Hao Dong,Zhijie Chen,Xiang Gao

In recent years, the solid amine of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) has shown promise as a direct air capture (DAC) adsorbent. However, the efficiency of amine groups under ultra-low CO 2 concentrations requires improvement. In this study, we propose a novel method to regulate proton migration through solvent effects during amine grafting, to enhance the synthesis of MOFs as solid amine adsorbents and improve amine group utilization. This approach yielded outstanding results with a MIL-100(Cr)-based DAC adsorbent, demonstrating a CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.15 mmol/g and an ultra-high amine group utilization of 89.6 % at ambient conditions. By directional deprotonation regulation, the CO 2 adsorption performance of the UiO-66(Zr)-based adsorbent significantly increased from 0.06 mmol/g of using H 2 O as solvent to 1.71 mmol/g of using NMP, with a 27.5-fold increase. Specifically, organic polar aprotic solvents enhanced the binding energy and reduced the energy barrier for deprotonation during the grafting process, thereby improving CO 2 adsorption performance and amine group utilization, which shed a new light on the development of MOFs based CO 2 adsorbent. Furthermore, due to the coordination of secondary amine groups with metal sites leads to the decrease of hydrophilic functional groups in the CO 2 adsorption products, the hydrophobicity of products was reduced significantly resulting in an increase in the ΔS of the hydrated ion pairs after the adsorption, which reduced the heat of CO 2 adsorption about 15 % than that reported in the literature. Based on changes in humidity conditions, the regeneration energy consumption of the MF-Cr-AEEA is less than 2.5 GJ/t CO 2 under a relatively lower humidity, demonstrating outstanding industrial applications potential of the adsorbent.

The MOFs derived Co, Zn co-doping porous carbon framework as the collector for stable Li metal anodes

Xianyu Liu,Jing Li,Yingchun Xiao,Xiangcheng Dong,Lei Tao,Zhiyuan Liu,Zheng Liu,Jia Zhang,Shengjie Xu

The Li metal anode is regarded as the most potential electrode material in the next-generation energy storage system, because of the high energy density and specific capacity. However, the advancement of Li metal anode is restricted by the volume changing and dendrite growth. In this paper, the Co and Zn co-doped porous carbon framework (CF-CZ) derived from MOF structure was designed and produced to realize the dendrite-free Li metal anode. The porous structure could accommodate the deposited Li metal, which relaxes the pressure of electrode structure and relieves the volume changes. Meanwhile, the Co, Zn co-doping effectively improves the lithiophilicity of framework, which attracts Li + and decreases the nucleation barrier. Besides, numerous micropores of MOF structure could divide the Li + flux to reduce the local current density for dense sedimentation. With the synergies of co-doping and porous structure, the symmetric cell of CF-CZ shows better electrochemical performance (the overvoltage can be stable at 14 mV after 1200 cycles) than pure Cu foil, and the LFP cells deliver 116.4 mAh g −1 at 1 C after 200 cycles. As a consequence, the CF-CZ possesses the potential to be applied in Li metal anodes.

Comparative Study of Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene over Porous Metal Oxide Catalysts Derived from (Mn, Ce, Co)-MOFs

Xue Luo,Yingying Xue,Leilei Xu,Linshui Lian,Cai-e Wu,Yan Cui,Weixin Zou,Lin Dong,Fei Gao,Mindong Chen

This study presents a systematic investigation into the catalytic oxidation of toluene using metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived porous metal oxide catalysts obtained through controlled pyrolysis. The MOF-derived catalysts (Mn3O4-BTC, CeO2-BTC, Co3O4-BTC) demonstrated remarkable improvements in catalytic activity and stability compared to their commercial counterparts (Mn3O4-c, CeO2-c, Co3O4-c), achieving 90% toluene conversion (T90) at significantly lower temperatures of 240 °C, 241 °C, and 237 °C, respectively. Besides, a comprehensive suite of characterization techniques was employed to elucidate the structure–activity relationships. Specifically, various traditional and in situ characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 programmed reduction (H2-TPR), online-tandem thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (online-tandem TG-MS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS), were employed to elucidate crystallinity, porosity, morphology analysis, probe surface chemistry, redox properties, real-time tracking of thermal decomposition, and reaction mechanisms during the catalytic oxidation of toluene. It was found that the enhanced catalytic performance could be attributed to the synergistic effects of a high surface area, well-dispersed active sites, and abundant oxygen vacancies. These insights provided fundamental insights into the design and optimization of MOF-derived catalysts for efficient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) abatement in environmental catalysis.

Promoting spinal cord injury repair by using ZnO@MOFs nanozymes functionalized hydrogel through the ROS microenvironment regulating pathway

Ding Jiaxin,Gao Binbin,Sang Zelin,Dai Zhen,Chen Zhenhua,Mei Xifan

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a kind of health problem characterized by oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis, which pose major challenges to the recovery of patients. Recently, the application of photothermal nanotechnology in medicine has opened up exciting new avenues for the treatment of SCI. This innovative approach leverages the unique properties of nanomaterials to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In our study, we developed a novel nanotherapeutic system named ZnO-ZIF8@H, which is designed to deliver targeted neuroprotective effects. We meticulously evaluated its performance under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which is known to promote local heating and stimulate biological processes. The data indicated that the application of ZnO-ZIF8@H combined with NIR irradiation significantly reduced oxidative stress levels in the affected tissues. This was evidenced by a marked decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a well-known indicator of lipid peroxidation and cellular damage. Simultaneously, the treatment notably enhanced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) enzymes. These findings suggest that ZnO-ZIF8@H+NIR could both protect cells from oxidative damage and boost the internal antioxidant defenses, highlighting its potential as an effective therapeutic strategy for mitigating secondary injuries following spinal cord trauma. It also suppressed neuronal apoptosis, as evidenced by TUNEL staining and decreased Cleaved-Caspase3 expression in NeuN-positive neurons. These results indicated that ZnO-ZIF8@H+NIR effectively reduces secondary damage from SCI by alleviating apoptosis and oxidative stress, offering a promising approach for the therapy of SCI.

Enhanced Catalytic Ozonation of Formaldehyde over MOFs- Derived MnOx Catalysts with Diverse Morphologies: The Role of Oxygen Vacancies

Yulin Sun,Yiwei Zhang,Yong He,Wubin Weng,Yanqun Zhu,Zhihua Wang

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a hot topic in various research fields nowadays. And MOF-derived metal oxides prepared by the sacrificial template method have been widely applied as catalysts for pollutant removal. Accordingly, we prepared a series of MOF-derived MnOxcatalysts with diverse morphologies (rod-like, flower-like, slab-like) via the pyrolysis of MOF precursors, and the as-prepared MnOxcatalysts demonstrated superior performance compared to the one prepared using the co-precipitation method. MnOx-II, with a flower-like structure, exhibited excellent activity for formaldehyde (HCHO) catalytic ozonation at room temperature, reaching complete HCHO conversion at O3/HCHO of 1.5 and more than 90% CO2selectivity at an O3/HCHO ratio of 2.5. On the basis of various characterization methods, it was clarified that the enhanced catalytic performance of MnOx-II benefited from its larger BET surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, better redox ability at lower temperature, and more Lewis acid sites. The H2O resistance and stability tests were also conducted. Furthermore, DFT calculations substantiated the enhanced adsorption of HCHO and O3on oxygen vacancies, while in–situ DRIFTS measurements elucidated the degradation pathway of HCHO during catalytic ozonation through detected intermediates.

Efficient Application of Supramolecular Behavior in the Antimicrobial Activity and Antioxidant of Structurally Mismatched Zn and Co-MOFs

Zi-hang Yuan,Si-ya Zheng,Yu-mei Dai,En Tang

The escalating global challenges posed by antibiotic resistance and oxidative stress demand the urgent development of dual-functional materials integrating both antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities to address these intertwined biological threats. This raises a pivotal question: Why not engineer a material capable of simultaneously delivering antioxidant and antibacterial functionalities? To bridge this critical gap, we strategically designed two novel Co and Zn metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) through supramolecular interactions to achieve synergistic antimicrobial–antioxidant performance, rigorously validated via multimodal characterization. Different from traditional antibiotics, these MOFs exert antibacterial effects by controlling the release of metal ions and other mechanisms. Co and Zn-MOFs demonstrated robust antimicrobial efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, coupled with potent antioxidant properties. Zn-MOFs exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity by intensifying membrane disruption via strengthened hydrophobic interactions with bacterial surfaces, whereas Co-MOFs showcased superior antioxidant capacity derived from their redox-active nature. This study unravels the critical mechanistic interplay between metal-bacteria interfacial dynamics and the preservation of cell wall structural integrity. These MOFs redefine multifunctional material paradigms for combating drug-resistant pathogens and oxidative damage, offering transformative potential for biomedical innovations and beyond.

Surface-modified MOFs for synthesizing hollow Fe-CoP polyhedrons encapsulating CoP particles to enhance the performance of OER

Wu Hongmei,Liu Baoshan,Zhang Yao,Li Feng,Liu Jing,Zhao Liping,Zhang Peng,Gao Lian

Cobalt-based transition metal phosphides (TMPs) exhibit huge potential as efficient OER electrocatalysts for commercial applications. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) has been served as an appealing precursor for the synthesis of cobalt-based TMPs owing to its distinctive structural advantages. However, the poor conductivity and structural variability of ZIF-67 affect the materials’ OER electrocatalytic performance. To enhance the structural stability and OER performance of ZIF-67 derived TMPs, in this work, a polyhedral TMP nanocomposite with porous hollow structure, featuring Fe-CoP on the outer shell and CoP nanoparticles within the cavity, was synthesized using ZIF-67 as template. The ZIF-67 served as both Co precursor and structure template, and the [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3− served as precursor of Fe dopant and structure stabilizer. The resulting TMP composite electrode (Fe-CoP) effectively retains the framework of ZIF-67, exhibiting prominently improved OER activity (η 10  = 297 mV) and exceptional stability (over 260 h). The Fe–C≡N–Co bonds positively influence the preservation of the sample’s morphology after phosphorization. Additionally, a ligand-substitution strategy is proposed for the formation of the designed structure. This strategy, regulating the morphology of 3D structured MOFs, offers a new understanding on stabilizing the geometric structure of MOFs and their derivatives as structure templates.
